US deaths jumped from 600,000 to 700,000 in a little over 100 days. Also, the next 100,000 deaths&nbsp;took just 73 days, reports Reuters.

As of now, the US has the highest number of reported Covid deaths. It is then followed by Brazil and India. Also, the country will soon surpass 50 million cases.

While the newly emerged Omicron variant is taking over the US, the Delta variant still accounts for more than 99 per cent of all US cases.

One&nbsp;of Brazil’s biggest healthcare providers, Prevent Senior, has been accused of covering up coronavirus deaths, pressuring doctors to prescribe ineffective treatments, and testing unproven drugs on elderly patients.

The health maintenance organisation is in the crosshairs of a congressional inquiry into Brazil’s coronavirus crisis.

It all started last month when a group of doctors handed a 10,000-page dossier to investigators containing a series of incendiary allegations against the organisation. The dossier contained claims that elderly patients had been used as “human guinea pigs” for the testing of unproven COVID-19 “remedies” without giving their full consent.

Bruna Morato, the lawyer representing the doctors, appeared before the COVID-19 investigation in Brasília and made further allegations.

This was a part of what is being termed as 'COVID kit'.

The decision to promote hydroxychloroquine as an effective COVID-19 treatment was partly designed to help government ideologues who allegedly wanted to use such information to convince Brazilians there was no need to stay at home during the pandemic.&nbsp;

“The economy couldn’t stop so they needed to find a way of giving hope to people who were leaving their homes. This hope had a name: hydroxychloroquine,” Morato alleged.

The lawyer further claimed that coronavirus deaths had been concealed in order not to compromise the results of Prevent Senior tests allegedly designed to show “Covid kit” drugs were effective against the disease. “This is a fraud,” said the inquiry’s vice-president, Randolfe Rodrigues.

A statement issued by Prevent Senior said that it repudiated the “untruthful accusations” and had always operated within legal and ethical guidelines.&nbsp;

The company further denied it had ever hidden or under-reported deaths.

“Prevent Senior has always respected the autonomy of its doctors and has never fired its employees because of their technical convictions,” the company said.

The decision to promote hydroxychloroquine as an effective COVID-19 treatment was partly designed to help government ideologues who allegedly wanted to use such information to convince Brazilians there was no need to stay at home during the pandemic. “The economy couldn’t stop so they needed to find a way of giving hope to people who were leaving their homes. This hope had a name: hydroxychloroquine,” Morato alleged. The lawyer further claimed that coronavirus deaths had been concealed in order not to compromise the results of Prevent Senior tests allegedly designed to show “Covid kit” drugs were effective against the disease. “This is a fraud,” said the inquiry’s vice-president, Randolfe Rodrigues. A statement issued by Prevent Senior said that it repudiated the “untruthful accusations” and had always operated within legal and ethical guidelines. The company further denied it had ever hidden or under-reported deaths. “Prevent Senior has always respected the autonomy of its doctors and has never fired its employees because of their technical convictions,” the company said.

Eighteen people died in 2020 after episodes that involved fireworks, compared with 12 people the previous year — a 50% increase — according to the report, by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 15,600 people went to emergency rooms because of fireworks injuries in 2020, a 56% increase from the 10,000 injured in 2019. The increase came at a time when many hospitals across the country were overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases.

About 66% of the fireworks-related injuries last year occurred from June 21 to July 21, and the two leading sources for the injuries year-round were firecrackers and sparklers, the report found.

The number of injuries last year was the highest since at least 2001, the earliest year for which data are available on the agency’s website.

Patty Davis, a spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said it was difficult to pinpoint an exact reason for the increase but said it was most likely tied to the pandemic.

“Many cities cancelled July 4 public fireworks displays during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this may have spurred consumers to use fireworks in their own backyards,” Davis said in an interview.

Los Angeles was among the cities that cancelled all fireworks shows last year, causing some residents to put on their own amateur, and more dangerous, shows, said Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. On July 4 alone, the city received 429 more emergency calls than it would on an average day, he said, and many involved fireworks.

“The kids are the ones that we see that are frequently injured, statistically,” Scott said.

Children younger than 14 made up 24% of all fireworks-related injuries in the country from June 21 through July 21, 2020, according to the report.

But the biggest increase in injuries was among those 20 to 24 years old, Davis said. They accounted for about 50 episodes in 2019 but about 400 in 2020, a 700% increase. The cancellation of fireworks shows last year may have accounted for the increase, Davis said.

For some in New York City — where fireworks are illegal to buy, sell or ignite — setting off colourful and loud explosions into the wee hours of the morning last year was an escape from the weariness and boredom that came from staying at home. For others, the fireworks were a way to show defiance against law enforcement at a time when millions across the country were protesting police brutality.

Of the 18 people in the country who died last year as a result of fireworks, eight of them had used drugs or alcohol beforehand, the report states.

One death happened in Mount Healthy, Ohio, about 10 miles north of Cincinnati. It occurred a day after July 4 festivities, when a 63-year-old man was fatally struck in the head by fireworks, authorities said.

“It was an extremely busy day,” said Sgt. Greg Nolte of the Mount Healthy Police Department. “We definitely got some calls last year. And what people get worried about is fireworks on their house, on their property, on their trees.”

A man in Jersey City, New Jersey, died last year after being hit in the neck by fireworks on July 4, NJ.com reported.

In Las Vegas, there were so many 911 calls last year about fireworks on July 4 that it temporarily crashed the city’s emergency dispatch system, said Tim Szymanski, spokesman for Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

“You could go anywhere in the city and just stand on a hill someplace, and you could see all the people using the fireworks,” Szymanski said. “I think everybody was confined to a hole because of the pandemic, but they wanted to do something, so they got their fireworks.”

As people prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, Davis said, they should never allow children to use fireworks, including sparklers, which burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

People should also keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby, she said, in case of emergencies.

“We are hoping since public fireworks displays are on again this year as the COVID-19 pandemic eases, people will take advantage of those,” Davis said. “That’s the safest way to watch fireworks.”

A total of 19,02,009 tests were conducted on Friday, taking the total cumulative tests conducted so far for detection of COVID-19 in the country to 38,92,07,637, it said.&nbsp;

The daily positivity rate was recorded 2.98 per cent. It has been less than five per cent for 12 consecutive days, the ministry said, adding that the weekly positivity rate has declined to 3.58 per cent.&nbsp;

Recoveries outnumbered daily cases for the 37th consecutive day and the number of people who have recuperated from the disease has increased to 2,86,78,390. The case fatality rate stands at 1.29 per cent, the data said.&nbsp;

Uttarakhand`s Dehradun district on Sunday reported 20 new cases of black fungus and the death of three patients during treatment.

According to a bulletin of the Health Department, the total number of black fungus patients in the state has gone up to 299, 47 patients have died and 18 patients have recovered so far.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh has the highest number of patients (195) undergoing treatment. Mucormycosis or black fungus is a complication caused by a fungal infection. People catch mucormycosis by coming in contact with the fungal spores in the environment.

It can also develop on the skin after the fungus enters the skin through a cut, scrape, burn, or other types of skin trauma, as per the Union Health Ministry.

The disease is being detected among patients who are recovering or have recovered from COVID-19.

Moreover, anyone who is diabetic and whose immune system is not functioning well needs to be on the guard against this.

Looking at the rising cases of Mucormycosis or `black fungus`, the Union Health Ministry had last month said the availability of Amphotericin-B, the key drug to treat the deadly disease is now being increased and the ministry is in touch with five additional manufacturers.

Several states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have declared it a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, thereby making it mandatory to report every Mucormycosis case to the state government.

Indian students bound for foreign countries to pursue higher education are left in a dilemma. This comes after the 45-day time interval between two vaccine shots in India has been increased to 12-16 weeks. Those who were due to fly abroad by end of June or July had taken their jabs in May.&nbsp;

They did so right after the Indian government opened vaccination for the 18-44 age group from May 1st.&nbsp;

But, owing to the new timelines for the second dose, the students are afraid that they may be forced to further delay their journey, as their wait for full vaccination and certification is now 2-3 months.

Canada-bound students are the most affected by this decision and elaborated their woes to WION.

They were originally due to fly out in late April or early May, ahead of the summer intake of Canadian universities.

But, their plans hit a roadblock owing to Canada’s ban on direct flights from India starting 22nd April. With India’s COVID-19 second wave having continued throughout April and May, this flight ban was further extended until June 22nd. In the case of American and European Universities, the intake of students starts in August or September.

Given the new 12-16 week interval in place, students who took their jab in May would have to wait at least until August to get their second jab, the vaccination certificate and then board their flights. This brings with it, its own set of challenges for some of the already anguished students who are taking online classes at home, despite having paid hefty fees.

“Even if we manage to convince the Public health centre to give us the second jab in 45 days, the official certificate of having taken it would be available only after the 12-16 week period. This would delay our travel plans even further” says Karan Thakkar, who is headed for Ontario.

According to the recommendations for persons entering Canada, not vaccinated and partially vaccinated persons will have to undergo a quarantine period.&nbsp;

“Once we reach Canada without getting vaccinated or with only a single shot, we’d have to shell out nearly 2000 Canadian Dollars (about Rs1.2 lakhs) for quarantine facilities. There are also doubts over whether the unvaccinated and single-shot persons will be allowed to enter” said Sajith Ahamed who is to pursue his Post graduation.

Raama Sreenivasan, a student who tweeted out the students’ emergency request for priority vaccination to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Council of ministers says there was no response as yet. “When I checked for a solution with the Cowin helpline, they directed me to the District immunization officer. But the district officer says that they can act only under instructions from the State Government” he said.

Students that spoke to WION think that the Tamil Nadu Government too must implement a strategy to provide priority jabs to students travelling abroad. They feel that since Kerala, Mumbai, Karnataka, Gujarat and Telangana have taken decisions in this regard and there is a precedent, the Tamil Nadu Government must explore this option immediately. 
 
Another issue is that Covaxin, the indigenous vaccine of Bharat Biotech has not been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), it has also been approved for international travel only in a handful of countries. The foreign travel options of those who have taken Covaxin also raises questions.&nbsp;

India`s total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,43,72,907 with 36,73,802 active cases and 2,66,207 deaths so far. According to the Health Ministry, a total of 3,53,299 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, with 2,04,32,898 being cured of Covid till date. The Health Ministry said that a total of 18,04,57,579 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 11,03,625 who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 31,30,17,193 samples have been tested up to May 14 for Covid-19. Of these 16,93,093 samples were tested on Friday.

The death toll climbed to 2,42,362 with 4,092 daily deaths, the data updated at 8 am showed. &nbsp;

Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to 37,36,648, comprising 16.76 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 82.15 per cent.&nbsp;

The number of people, who have recuperated from the disease, surged to 1,83,17,404 with 3,86,444 patients recovering in a day, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.09 per cent, the data stated.&nbsp;

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 30,22,75,471 samples have been tested up to May 8 with 18,65,428 samples being tested on Saturday. &nbsp;

The 4,092 new fatalities include 864 from Maharashtra, 482 from Karnataka, 332 from Delhi, 297 from Uttar Pradesh, 241 from Tamil Nadu, 223 from Chhattisgarh, 171 from Punjab, 160 from Rajasthan, 155 from Haryana, 141 from Jharkhand, 127 from West Bengal, 119 from Gujarat and 118 from Uttarakhand.&nbsp;
