An Iranian court has sentenced to death four people for their involvement in selling contaminated bootleg liquor that killed 17 and sent hundreds to hospitals in June, reported news agency AFP.&nbsp;

As many as 11 defendants had been put on trial over the&nbsp;distribution of toxic liquor in Alborz province, west of Tehran.&nbsp;

Judiciary spokesman Massoud Setayeshi said that&nbsp;four of them were given the death penalty while the remaining received prison sentences of between one to five years.&nbsp;

All of them can appeal&nbsp;to the Supreme Court, added Setayeshi.&nbsp;

While 17 were killed drinking the liquor, 191 were left blinded or hospitalised, leading to nationwide condemnation against the perpetrators.&nbsp;

Although&nbsp;most of those hospitalised had been discharged, many had to undergo dialysis and other critical lifesaving procedures, according to Hossein Fazli Harikandi, chief justice of Alborz province.

The authorities at the time raided a cosmetic factory where they seized more than&nbsp;6,000 litres (1,585 gallons) of bootleg alcohol.&nbsp;

<h2>Sale of liquor is banned</h2>

The sale and consumption of alcohol is banned in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Only Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians are exempt from the alcohol ban. Foreigners are required to respect it.

Alcohol is considered 'haram' in Islam and most Muslim nations have strict rules regarding it.

However, the prohibition in Iran has led to a huge illicit trade of bootleg alcohol with alcohol mafias controlling the underworld market.

Often such bootleg alcohol is adulterated with poisonous methanol.&nbsp;

Methanol cannot be smelled or tasted in drinks. It causes delayed organ and brain damage. Symptoms include chest pain, nausea, hyperventilation, blindness and even coma.

The Biden administration has handed out its very first death penalty. The penalty has been handed out to Robert Bowers, the gunman who killed 11 worshippers and wounded six others at a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018. Bowers was convicted of all 63 charges against him. Out of these 22 charges were capital offences. The attack, which took place in October 2018, is described as the deadliest attack on Jewish people in the US. Bowers had turned an ordinary Jewish Sabbath into the worst anti-Semitic mass shooting in US history and he is proud of it. The decision to sentence Bowers to death was unanimous among the 12 jurors deliberating the issue. They spent just over 10 hours deliberating the issue over a period of 2 days. After a spate of arrests and executions for drug offences, Ibrahim, a dealer in Saudi Arabia, is not taking any chances.

The result is at least 20 executions for drug offences since last year, according to an AFP tally, and a sharp rise in arrests.

At least two Saudi security officers have been killed in drug raids, including one last week, according to state media.&nbsp;

"Several of my customers were recently arrested in a private compound," said Ibrahim, who mainly sells captagon and hashish. "This never used to happen before."

Acts of violence committed by drug users prompted the crackdown, a security official told AFP.

They include a recent case in which a drug addict killed his parents by dousing them with fuel and setting them on fire, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the press.

<h2>Party pill</h2>

Across Jeddah, roadside billboards urge citizens to report any illicit drug activities to the authorities.

While alcohol is illegal in the conservative country, it is also believed to be the world's biggest market for captagon, which is used by wealthy Saudis as a party pill and by workers to stay awake during long shifts.

While previous anti-drug campaigns targeted smuggled shipments, mainly from Syria and Lebanon, the latest initiative is zeroing in on dealers and users within the country.

Apparently to provide a deterrent, a nearly three-year moratorium on executions for drug crimes was scrapped last year. Saudi Arabia is one of the world's biggest users of capital punishment, executing 147 people in 2022.

"In the last year to two years, we have seen an uptick in internal arrests and the use of the death penalty (in drug cases)," said Caroline Rose of the New Lines Institute think tank.

The shift from border seizures to arrests of dealers is partly due to "a focus on security issues surrounding captagon and a recognition of just how deep some of these networks go", Rose told AFP.

The campaign is also aimed at keeping drugs out of the hands of Saudi youth, the drivers of an ambitious reform agenda to diversify the oil-dependent economy. Fifty-one per cent of the 32.2 million population is under 30.

"Saudi Arabia is carrying out a huge economic project...and the youth are the main pillar of this project," said Sulaiman al-Oqaily, a Saudi political analyst.

<h2>Addiction on the rise</h2>

Rampant drug use is taking its toll, with more than 200,000 addicts in Saudi Arabia, according to health ministry figures cited by domestic media.

Growing numbers are seeking addiction treatment, mainly because they fear arrest, said Hamad al-Sheehan of the Rushd Specialized Center in Riyadh.

"After the recent campaign, the numbers have increased at the centre," the director of treatment said from his office, where at least 10 young men were waiting to be seen.

"We currently receive 1,000 people per month instead of only 100 previously."&nbsp;

He said that captagon and other methamphetamine-type drugs are among the most abused in the kingdom. Most of his patients are between 17 and 21 years old and half are women, he said.&nbsp;

If Sheehan's patients fear arrest, the crackdown is working, Oqaily said.&nbsp;

"The message is if you don't fear for yourself, you should fear the government," he said.

Last month, Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Nayef warned drug dealers and smugglers that they will not escape.

"We are still at the beginning of the campaign," he said.

Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) released a statement saying that it would not reveal the name of the man in order to respect his family's wish for privacy.

"The person was accorded full due process under the law, and had access to legal counsel throughout the process," CNB added.

"A last-ditch appeal to review the case and stay his execution was dismissed on Tuesday", Annamalai said.

Despite growing calls for the city-state to abolish the death penalty and halt drug-related executions, Singapore presses that it is an effective impediment against trafficking.

The United Nations Human Rights Office for Singapore had urged the authorities to "urgently reconsider" the decision of hanging, and British tycoon Richard Branson also asked to halt it.

Branson, who is a member of the Geneva-based Global Commission on Drug Policy, wrote a blog earlier this week about Tangaraju. He mentioned that the Singaporean man was "not anywhere near" the drugs at the time of his arrest and that Singapore may be about to put an innocent man to death.&nbsp;

He was convicted in 2017 of "abetting by engaging in a conspiracy to traffic" 1,017.9 grammes of cannabis. The quantity was twice the minimum volume required for a death sentence in Singapore. In 2018, Tangaraju was sentenced to death and the Court of Appeal upheld the decision.&nbsp;

<h2>Activists to push for Singapore to abolish death penalty</h2>

Activists said they will keep making efforts to push for Singapore to abrogate capital punishment as it has not proven any deterrent effect on crime.

"The call to the Singapore government (to scrap the death penalty) has been loud and clear globally, and we will repeat the call: Singapore has to halt the executions," Amnesty International's executive director for Malaysia Katrina Jorene Maliamauv told reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

"They have to commute all existing death sentences."

As per AFP, the state legislature on Monday passed a bill allowing execution by firing squad in the absence of lethal injections. The conservative state's Senate passed the bill by 24 votes in favour and 11 against. The bill must now be signed into law by the governor.

Once the law is signed, Idaho will become the fifth US state to approve execution by firing squad.&nbsp;

The other four states, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, are Utah, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

The non-profit organisation American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has denounced the passage of the law as "appalling" and has labelled the rule "archaic."&nbsp;

"A firing squad is particularly gruesome...such executions leave lasting scars on all those involved," said the organisation's Idaho arm in a statement.&nbsp;

Citing experts, ACLU said that those executed by firing squad "likely experience extreme levels of pain and torture".

Death by firing squad will only be allowed if lethal injection is not possible.

In the United States, since 1976, two men and a woman have been executed in this way; the last one was in 2010. These three people have all been executed in the western US state of Utah.

US state of Idaho moves one step closer to 'apalling' law allowing execution by firing squad

An Uzbek man, who was accused of killing eight people in a truck attack that took place six years ago in New York, was sentenced to life imprisonment after the jurors failed to agree on the punishment of the death penalty Monday.

Prosecutors had argued demanding capital punishment for Sayfullo Saipov, who was convicted in January of various murder and terrorism charges over the truck attack that happened on October 31, 2017.

Saipov was sentenced to a life term, devoid of any possibility of parole after the Manhattan federal court's jury failed to unanimously agree on the death penalty.

A rented pickup truck was driven by Saipov down a Manhattan bike path where New Yorkers were preparing to celebrate Halloween.

Among those killed was a group of five friends who had travelled from Argentina. Around 12 others were injured before Saipov was shot in the abdomen by the police.

It was termed the deadliest attack that took place in New York since the World Trade Centre buildings were brought down on September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda hijackings.

Saipov, who had shifted to the United States in 2010, is believed to have acted as per the instructions of the Islamic State militant group, which called him one of its "soldiers”.

Saipov's trial was the first federal prosecution carried out during the presidency of Joe Biden in which capital punishment was sought by the Justice Department (DoJ).

The report attributed the increase in the death row inmate population to the 'extraordinary sentencing' of 38 persons to death in connection to the 2008 Ahmedabad bomb blast case where 56 innocents were killed while 243 suffered injuries. In nearly a third of the death row cases, the inmate was a sexual offence criminal. The trial courts handing capital punishment to such criminals saw a 33.56 per cent rise from 2016 to 2022. Salehi had disappeared at the end of October before appearing in a video published on November 2 by Iran's state-run media.&nbsp;The video claimed to show the first images of Salehi after his arrest.

It depicted a tattooed man in a sleeveless black T-shirt sitting on the ground, wearing a blindfold and looking bloodied and bruised.

The man says: "I am Toomaj Salehi. I said I made a mistake. I said... that you should run. I didn't mean you."

Activists condemned the recording as a forced confession extracted under duress.

Salehi is one of a number of prominent figures to be arrested in a mass crackdown that has seen dozens of journalists, lawyers, civil society and cultural figures arrested.

His detention came shortly after he gave an interview highly critical of the regime to the Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation.

"You are dealing with a mafia that is ready to kill the entire nation... in order to keep its power, money and weapons," Salehi had said in the interview.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found himself in soup after deleting a tweet where he falsely stated that the Iranian regime had sentenced 15,000 protesters to death.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the inaccurate tweet was shared by Trudeau's official Twitter account and remained live for more than 12 hours before being deleted.

The claim that Iran's regime sentenced 15,000 people to death has been swirling across social media platforms for some days and Trudeau became one of the major personalities to fall for it.&nbsp;

The Prime Minister's Office released a statement confirming that the tweet was deleted based on “initial reporting” that “lacked necessary context", stopping short of apologising for the gaffe.&nbsp;

“It [the tweet]&nbsp;was based on reporting of serious concerns raised by international human rights advocates warning of possible future sentences, including the death penalty, imposed on thousands of Iranian protesters who have already been detained by the regime,” said a government spokesperson.&nbsp;

In the now-deleted tweet, Trudeau said, “Canada denounces the Iranian regime’s barbaric decision to impose the death penalty on nearly 15,000 protestors,” Trudeau’s now-deleted tweet read.

“These brave Iranians were fighting for their human rights – and we continue to stand united in support of them, and united against the regime’s heinous actions," he added.

Nearly a year and a half after the the country's democratically elected government was toppled in a coup and the Junta installed at the helm, the new leaders have turned to an old and, some might argue, barbarous, method of punishment. According to state media, Myanmar’s Junta recently executed four prisoners, in the country’s first use of capital punishment in decades. 
 
AFP reports that a former lawmaker for the unseated Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party was among those executed.&nbsp;As per a June press release by the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR), they are the first judicial executions in Myanmar since 1988.

As part of its campaign against dissent after seizing power last year, the junta has sentenced dozens of anti-coup activists, although the country had not carried out an execution in decades.

Former lawmaker and hip-hop artist Phyo Zeya Thaw,&nbsp;and another well-known democracy campaigner Kyaw Min Yu,&nbsp;better known as “Jimmy” were among&nbsp;the four&nbsp;put to death for participating in “brutal and barbaric terror acts”,&nbsp;according to the Myanmar publication Global New Light.

The four people who were executed were accused of participating in “terror acts” by the military government in Myanmar. They were subsequently charged under&nbsp;counter-terrorism laws and the penal code, and the punishment was administered in accordance with prison procedures, reported&nbsp;Reuters.

International nations harshly criticised the junta when it revealed last month that it would carry out the executions.&nbsp;The junta’s decision was also denounced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as “a blatant violation of the right to life, liberty, and security of person.”

The military&nbsp;alleged voting fraud in the 2020 elections, which the NLD had won by a landslide. This was used as justification for its coup on February 1 of last year.

Early morning on Thursday (July 7th) Singapore executed a Malaysian prisoner who had been on death row for nine years. Kalwant Singh has been executed for drug trafficking. Singh had made a last-minute request for clemency, but the mercy plea was rejected by the courts in Singapore. The news of Kalwant Singh's death as per The Star was confirmed by Singaporean human rights activist Kirsten Han in her tweets.&nbsp;Norasharee Gous, a Singaporean who was detained and accused in connection with the same case as Kalwant, was also hung for drug trafficking, according to Han.

A candlelight vigil was held in front of the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (July 6) night in an attempt to halt the execution. Campaigners held signs reading "#Putrajaya save Kalwant" and "we can live without the death penalty," several attendees are reported to have chanted "save, save Kalwant" and "Singapore, stop the killing."

In a statement Emerlynne Gil, Deputy Regional Director for Research at Amnesty International, said: “Singapore has once again executed people convicted of drug-related offences in violation of international law, callously disregarding public outcry.” &nbsp;

“Going against a worldwide trend towards abolishing the death penalty, Singapore is just one of four countries known to have executed people for drug-related offenses in recent years. The death penalty is never the solution and we oppose it unconditionally. There is no evidence that it acts as a unique deterrent to crime.”

On Monday, a federal judge in Oklahoma ruled that the state's three-drug method of execution of death row inmates is constitutional.&nbsp;The ruling by Judge Stephen Friot comes after a federal trial in which attorneys of 28 death row inmates argued that the method causes suffering and violates the eighth amendment of the US constitution that prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.&nbsp;The attorneys argued that Midazolam, the first of the three drugs to be administered is inadequate to render a person unable to feel pain.&nbsp;

As per James Stronski one of the attorneys if inmates aren't properly anaesthetised, they would effectively be paralysed; unable to move or speak after the second injection is administered, but that they would still feel excruciating pain from the final drug Potassium Chloride that stops the heart.

"If this is allowed to continue...this is a 21st century burning at the stake," he said.

State attorneys also rejected the plaintiff's argument and said that the prescribed 500-milligram dose is more than enough to ensure that inmates don't feel any pain.

"The district court's decision ignores the overwhelming evidence presented at trial that Oklahoma's execution protocol, both as written and as implemented, creates an unacceptable risk that prisoners will experience severe pain and suffering," Moreno said in a statement.

'21st century burning at stake' Oklahoma judge rules three-drug method of death penalty constitutional

A Swedish-Iranian man who was convicted on spying charges would be executed by May 21, Iran’s ISNA news agency said on Wednesday citing unnamed officials.

Ahmad Reza Jalali, who specialises in disaster relief and has taught at European universities, was arrested in Iran in April 2016 for allegedly “spying on behalf of Israel and having a role in the killing of Iranian nuclear physicists", ISNA said citing sources.

He was subsequently sentenced to death, which was upheld by the Iranian Supreme Court in 2017.

The announcement of his execution came shortly before the trial ended for Hamid Noury, a former Iranian prosecution official arrested by Swedish authorities in 2019.

Noury is being tried for life imprisonment for committing grave war crimes during the final phase of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

The Stockholm District Court on Wednesday said that a verdict was expected on July 14 and that Nouri will “remain in custody until the verdict is announced or otherwise is decided”, reports Reuters.

Under Swedish law, courts can try Swedish citizens and other nationals for crimes against international law committed abroad.

On Monday, Iran’s foreign ministry summoned the Swedish envoy to protest “the baseless and fabricated accusations that the Swedish prosecutor made against Iran during Noury’s court case”, Iranian media reported earlier.

Meanwhile, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde expressed worry over reports that Iran may carry out the death penalty.

In a Twitter post, she condemned “the death penalty and demand the release of Djalali.”
