West Bengal on alert ahead of cyclone Asani

With the IMD forecast of a cyclonic storm reaching Odisha coast on December 4, the state government on Wednesday asked collectors of 13 districts to prepare for the evacuation of the people and has chalked out a disaster management strategy by requisitioning NDRF, ODRAF and fire department personnel for rescue and relief operation.

The forecast said that the low-pressure area in the south Andaman Sea will intensify into a depression and move towards the coast as a cyclonic storm on December 4 and the Coast Guard has initiated extensive pre-emptive measures in the eastern coast keeping it in view.

The Coast Guard Disaster Relief Teams (DRTs) with inflatable boats, lifeboats&nbsp;and life jackets are on standby for disaster response operations, a post by the Defence public relations officer in Chennai said.

Medical teams and ambulances have been kept ready for swift mobilisation, it said.

The district authorities in some places are asking farmers over the public address system to harvest their ripe paddy crops, the state chief secretary said.

Fishermen have been advised to not venture into the southeast and adjoining the east-central Bay of Bengal on December 2 and 3, into west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off north Andhra Pradesh,&nbsp;Odisha and&nbsp;West Bengal coasts from December 3 to 5, state relief commissioner P K Jena said.

The sea condition is likely to be very rough with the squally wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph on December 3.

'Mahe' likely to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm over east-central Arabian sea: India Meteorological Department

The Indian Meteorological Department on Friday said that `Kyarr` is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 to 36 hours.

According to the weather department, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy falls at isolated places is very likely over coastal districts of Karnataka, Goa and south Konkan and isolated heavy rainfall over north Konkan during next 12 hours.

The speed of gale wind reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph is prevailing around the system centre over the East-central Arabian Sea.

It is very likely to reach 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph during next 6 hours and 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph by October 26.

The wind speed may increase, further becoming 170-180 kmph and touching up to 200 kmph by Sunday morning around the system centre, it said.

"Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is likely to prevail along and off Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad districts of Maharashtra and Goa during next 12 hours and decrease to 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph during the subsequent 12 hours," as per the weather agency.

The squally wind speed is likely to prevail along and off remaining coastal districts of north Maharashtra and the northeast Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast during next 24 hours.

The sea condition is very likely to be high to very high over the east-central Arabian Sea around the system centre during the next 12 hours and phenomenal thereafter.

It is very likely to become phenomenal around the system centre over the west-central Arabian Sea from October 28 to 31.

The sea situation will be very rough to high along and off Maharashtra, Goa coasts and rough to very rough along and off north Karnataka coast during the next 12 hours.

Additionally, aircraft from Naval Air Stations Dega, Rajali and Parundu and Water Jet FACs and patrolling boats from naval detachments in Ramnad and Nagapatnam have been warning fishing vessels about the approaching cyclonic storm and directing them to return to the nearest harbour.

The ENC is also monitoring developments closely and flag officer commanding Tamil Nadu and Puducherry naval area have been in constant communication with the state administration to augment rescue and relief operations.

"One P8I aircraft, Dornier aircraft and helicopters are also standing by to undertake reconnaissance, rescue, casualty evacuation and air drop of relief material to the stranded," the statement further noted.

Cyclone Gaja is expected to make a landfall between Pamban and Cuddalore today by afternoon.

In an attempt to mitigate potential damage, the state administration headed by chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has planned to evacuate around 20,000 people residing on the coastal line and moving them to relief camps.
