Cryptocurrencies have been swept up in a sell-off in risk assets, which has picked up steam this week as data showed U.S. inflation running hot, deepening investor fears about the economic impact of aggressive central bank tightening.

The sell-off has meant that combined market value of cryptocurrencies is USD 1.2 trillion. This is less that half of the value cryptocurrencies had last November as per data from CoinMarketCap.

Tether, a reserve-backed stablecoin which is supposed to be pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, dropped to as low as 95 cents earlier in the global session, according to CoinMarketCap price data. It was last at 99 cents.

Despite the volatility, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said stablecoins like Tether and TerraUSD do not yet pose a systemic risk to the financial system.

"I wouldn't characterize it at this scale as a real threat to financial stability, but they're growing very rapidly and they present the same kind of risks we have known for centuries in connection to bank runs," she said during a House Financial Services Committee hearing.

On Thursday, bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency hit a low of USD 25,401.05. This is its lowest value since December 28, 2020.

In the past eight sessions, it has lost more than a quarter of its value, or around $10,700, and is down 37% so far this year, trading far below the peak of $69,000 it hit in November 2021.

Bitcoin's correlation with the Nasdaq composite has been on the rise recently and is now up near its all time highest level, based on Refinitiv data. The Nasdaq composite has tumbled around 8% so far this month.

Ether, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency, fell to its lowest since June 2021, sinking as low as $1,700.

Cuba approves cryptocurrency services

The Cuban central bank has issued regulations for virtual asset service providers after giving a nod last year to personal use of cryptocurrencies. It's a move some experts said could help Communist-run Caribbean island skirt stiff US sanctions.

A former researcher at a high-profile cryptocurrency group was sentenced to five years and three months in prison on Tuesday for conspiring to help North Korea evade US&nbsp;sanctions using cryptocurrency, federal prosecutors in Manhattan said.&nbsp;

Virgil Griffith was arrested in 2019 and pleaded guilty last September to conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act by travelling to North Korea to present on blockchain technology.

Griffith formerly worked for the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit that works to support the technology behind the cryptocurrency ether.

The sentence, imposed by US&nbsp;District Judge Kevin Castel, was the minimum amount of prison time prosecutors had sought. Griffith had asked for a sentence of two years. Castel also fined Griffith $100,000, below the $1 million prosecutors suggested.

Griffith's attorney Brian Klein said in a statement that while the sentence was disappointing, the judge "acknowledged Virgil's commitment to moving forward with his life productively and that he is a talented person who has a lot to contribute."

US&nbsp;Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement on Tuesday that "justice has been served."

Griffith, who has a doctorate from the California Institute of Technology, travelled to North Korea via China in April 2019 to deliver a presentation at the Pyongyang Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference, despite being denied permission by the U.S. Department of State to go, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Griffith understood the information could be used to evade sanctions the U.S. had imposed on North Korea over its development of nuclear weapons technology.

"The most important feature of blockchains is that they are open. And the DPRK can't be kept out no matter what the USA or the UN says," Griffith said during the presentation, according to prosecutors, using the initials of North Korea's official name.

The Ethereum Foundation said at the time of Griffith's arrest that it had not approved or supported his travel to North Korea.

Sunak has also commissioned the Royal Mint, Britain's official coin producer, to create a non-fungible token (NFT).

"The government has today announced moves that will see stablecoins recognised as a valid form of payment as part of wider plans to make Britain a global hub for crypto-asset technology and investment," said a Treasury statement.

Stablecoins will be regulated as part of a package of measures aimed at keeping the UK finance sector on the "cutting edge" of technology.

"Appropriate regulation... could provide a more efficient means of payment and widen customer choice," in the sector the Treasury noted.

Cons dubbed "romance scams" are skyrocketing during the Covid pandemic when lockdowns sent people flocking to the internet seeking a salve for isolation. So have crypto prices. That has made crypto a useful entry point for criminals looking to part victims from their savings.

The US Federal Trade Commission, tracking scams reported to its Consumer Sentinel Network, said 2021 saw a record $547 million stolen in romance scams. This marked a nearly 80 percent increase compared to the year before.

Those figures cap an upward trend that leapt in the first year of the pandemic. People reported to the FTC losing $1.3 billion to the scams over the past five years, the most of any fraud category.&nbsp;

But it is just the tip of the iceberg, the FTC notes, as the vast majority of cons go unreported.

“Romance is a powerful hook for scammers,” said Emma Fletcher, a data researcher with the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Cryptocurrency was the top method by dollar amount that victims used to make such payments in 2021, at about $139 million. That is nearly five times the cryptocurrency amount reported in 2020 and more than 25 times that in 2019, the FTC said. In comparison, about $121 million was lost through bank transfers or payments and another $93 million through wire transfers in 2021, FTC data shows.

The FTC saw an increase in the frequency of romance-scam reporting across all age groups in 2021, but the most significant increase was among 18-29 year olds, said Fletcher.

Experts believe this particular type of scam originated in China before spreading to the US and Europe. Its Chinese name translates roughly as "pig butchering," &nbsp;a reference to the way that victims are "fattened up" with flattery and romance before being scammed.

Jan Santiago, the deputy director of the Global Anti-Scam Organisation, a non-profit that represents victims of online cryptocurrency scams, said that unlike typical romance scams - which generally target older, less tech-savvy adults - these scammers appear to be going after younger and more educated women on dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge.

"It's mostly millennials who are getting scammed," he said.

Jane Lee, a researcher at the online fraud-prevention firm Sift, began looking into crypto dating scams last year. She signed up for several popular dating apps and quickly matched with men who tried to offer her investing advice.

"People are lonely from the pandemic, and crypto is super hot right now," she said. "The combination of the two has really made this a successful scam."

While awareness is growing -- through support groups, online forums and even a recent documentary on Netflix "The Tinder Swindler" -- many still fall prey to elaborate cons spun to get into a victim's heart.

Scammers, many based in West Africa, will adopt fake identities, often saying they work abroad and travel a lot or are in the military -- providing ready-made excuses for why they can't meet in person.

The price of love: Cryptocurrency scammers target dating apps

As revealed in the Union Budget, profits from trading in crypto and other virtual assets such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will be taxed at a flat 30% rate beginning in April.

This would apply to all virtual digital assets (VDA) and their earnings from Bitcoin to non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Furthermore, for every transaction involving crypto and other virtual assets, 1% of tax will be deducted at source (TDS).&nbsp;

For example, if a crypto investor buys crypto for Rs 10,000 and sells it for Rs 15,000, netting a profit of Rs 5,000, the investor will face a 30% tax on the profit.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, with only a few days till the new tax system for crypto assets takes effect, numerous investors are reportedly booking profits, rejigging their portfolios, or transferring their crypto assets to private wallets outside of India.&nbsp;

Crypto investors should be aware of a few fiscal regulations for the years 2022-2023:

1: After accounting for all bitcoin transactions for the year, no tax will be required to be paid if an investor is losing money with no earnings.

2: Furthermore, investors will not be taxed if they purchase a crypto asset that has gained in value but are unable to sell it due to market conditions. The profits will not be taxed until they sell it for a profit.

3: When calculating taxes, losses from one type of VDA cannot be offset by gains from other VDA transactions.This means that investors will have to pay a 30% tax on any gains made, while losses will not be deducted from the final taxation amount when trading other tokens.As a result, if you make a profit on one token but lose on another, you must still pay 30% on the profitable token.&nbsp;

President Joe Biden on Wednesday ordered government agencies to begin work on creating a digital US dollar, weighing the risks and benefits of a move that could be a game-changer for the global financial system.

According to a White House statement, the US effort will be "placing urgency on research and development of a potential United States CBDC."&nbsp;

Brian Deese and Jake Sullivan, Biden’s top economic and national security advisers, respectively, said the order establishes the first comprehensive federal digital assets strategy for the United States.

An important clue may have been found in the 2017 bust of an underground digital market used to launder some of the funds. US officials said that some of the money was transferred to AlphaBay, a dark web version of eBay that allows anything to be sold.

Elliptic, a digital currency tracking company, says it is plausible that when AlphaBay shut down, it allowed authorities access to its internal transaction logs, which were linked to a cryptocurrency account in Lichtenstein's name.

Bitfinex said in a statement that the company was working with the Department of Justice to establish its rights to the bitcoin stolen.

Additionally, Lichtenstein and Morgan attempted to launder money by using a network of currency exchanges or claiming that the money represented payments to Morgan's startup, according to the DOJ.

If the law reported in Russian media is passed, reports say that only owning cryptocurrencies will be legalised in the country and not other activities.

Cryptocurrencies have had legal status in Russia since 2020. But payments using cryptocurrencies have not yet been authorised. Authorities in the country have in past expressed fears that cryptocurrencies may be used to fund illegal activities. Kommersant says that if a law is passed, it may come into force in latter half of 2022 or first half of 2023

However, the report suggests that transactions made using cryptocurrencies that amount to more than 600,000 rubles (about $8,000) may get declared illegal.

The lawsuit comes after Forrest said he made several requests asking Facebook to prevent his image from being used to promote investment plans, including in an open letter to Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg in November 2019.

Facebook, which changed its name to Meta last year, declined to comment on the lawsuit but said that in general it has always taken a "multifaceted approach" to stop such ads appearing and had blocked advertisers.

"We're committed to keeping these people off our platform," a spokesperson for Meta said in an emailed statement.

Some advertisements, which have used Forrest's image and claimed to promote cryptocurrency investment schemes, have appeared on Facebook since March 2019, the lawsuit said.

"This action is being taken on behalf of those everyday Australians – Mums and Dads, Grans and Grandads – who work all their lives to gather their savings and to ensure those savings aren't swindled away by scammers," Forrest said in a statement.

Under Australian law, a private prosecution of a foreign corporation for alleged offences under the Commonwealth Criminal Code requires the consent of the country's attorney general.

"The Attorney-General has given her consent to the private prosecution against Facebook in relation to alleged offences under subsection 400.7(2) of the Criminal Code," said Steven Lewis, principal of Mark O'Brien Legal, which will represent Forrest in the case.
