Jennifer McClellan has become the first black woman from Virginia to be elected to Congress. The Democratic senator defeated Republican Leon Benjamin in Virginia’s 4th district. Rep. Don McEachin from Virginia died soon after his re-election last November, creating a vacancy in the seat. It must be noted that Jennifer McClellan’s election as Virginia’s Congresswoman doesn’t give Democrats the majority in the house. McClellan was born in a family of community leaders and educators on December 28, 1972. Both of her parents worked at Virginia State University. She currently lives in Richmond with her husband David Mills. In 2010, she became the first Virginia delegate to attend a legislative session while pregnant and give birth to a child while in office.

The Voting Rights Act of Virginia was passed by McClellan in 2021 while she was a state senator; it was the first of its kind to be passed in a Southern state and was based on the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965.
By eliminating outdated segregation laws from 1901 to 1960 that were still included in the state's code until 2020, she has also eliminated any trace of Jim Crow in Virginia. Under her leadership, the Virginia Values Act was also approved; bipartisan legislation that protects LGBTQ Virginians in areas like employment, housing, and public service. She also spearheaded the push to get the state's ban on same-sex marriage lifted.

Also, she amended Virginia's criminal justice system, passed the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and the Reproductive Health Protection Act, and increased access to child care and tenant rights and protections.

Rahul Gandhi has said he was favourite of his Indian grandmother Indira Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was of their Italian grandmother Paola Maino. In an interview to the Italian daily "Corriere della Sera", the 52-year-old leader of Congress, one of India's key opposition parties, also faced a frequently-asked question on his marriage and said he "would like to have children" though. Asked why he did not get married until now, Gandhi said, "It's strange...I don't know. Too many things to do. But I would like to have children." Gandhi also shared his experiences from the 3,500-km Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. On a question about his beard that he has grown during the foot march, he said, "I had decided not to cut it for the whole march. Now I have to decide whether to keep it or not..."

Gandhi told the newspaper, "I was the Indian grandmother's favourite and my sister Priyanka was the Italian grandmother's favourite." He said she lived 98 years and "I was very attached to her, as I am to uncle Walter, to the cousins, to the whole family". Paola Maino died in Italy in August last year.

In his interview to the newspaper published on February 1, Gandhi alleged that fascism has entered the country as democratic structures were collapsing and Parliament was not functioning properly. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi can be defeated in elections, scheduled next year, if the opposition presented an alternative vision to fascism. To a question on whether power could be transmitted by dynastic means, Gandhi said, "We are a family. A dynasty, if you will. But we have an idea to defend. Not India, the idea on which India is founded."

TikTok CEO to testify before US Congress over data breach claims

The US has hit its borrowing limit, also known as the debt ceiling, fueling fears of putting global markets in instability and setting off a budgetary battle in Congress. The looming debt ceiling crisis unsettles investors, as any default will have a major impact on the international financial markets.

So, what exactly is the debt ceiling, or borrowing cap, and why is it such a big deal?

What is a debt ceiling?

The debt ceiling determines how much money the US government can borrow for its expenses. After the borrowing cap is reached, the Treasury Department is not permitted to raise money for the government by issuing further bills, bonds, or notes. In this situation, the only source of funding for the country is tax revenues. Currently, the cap on the US government borrowing equates to around 120 per cent of the nation's yearly economic output.

Where is the borrowed money used?

US Congress determines the borrowing limit presently set at $31.4 trillion. The Federal government uses borrowed money to help pay for costs included in its budgets, such as social security and Medicare payouts and the salaries of US military and government workers.

How long can the US government survive?

Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary, stated last week that the government could only pay its payments through early June if the debt ceiling is not increased. Yellen said that "extraordinary measures" are now being used to stop the United States from going into default on its financial expenses. However, Yellen's estimate for the "drop-dead date" is earlier than some experts had predicted for the US to exhaust its borrowing limit.

Indeed, many experts believe the US could reach its debt ceiling in the third or fourth quarter. According to Jonathan Cohn, Head of Rates Trading Strategy at Credit Suisse in New York, the debt ceiling may be hit between September and early November. Goldman Sachs expects the US government to run out of money anytime between August and October.

Can the US then raise the debt ceiling?

The borrowing cap has to be raised, so the US government continues to make its payments due and prevent a default. The political situation, though, is not favourable. Republicans run the House of Representatives, while Democrats have a majority in the Senate. Congress is reluctant to raise the debt ceiling because it might provide Republicans with leverage when negotiating spending cuts.

Democrats vs Republicans:

In a conversation with Fox News, newly appointed US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said one could not just keep increasing the debt ceiling. "Let's sit down and change our behaviour for the good of America. Because what we're going to do is bankrupt this country and these entitlements if we don't change their behaviour today." On the contrary, White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, said the administration would not be negotiating. If the debt ceiling is to be raised, it should be done without any conditions.

What if the debt ceiling is not raised?

If the US government cannot borrow more money, it will put existing Federal programs at risk. Investors will get jittery if the verbal battle is not resolved and no further action is taken to address the situation. The US dollar may also lose its global appeal if the Federal government defaults on its loan and interest payments. That, in turn, would weaken the greenback, hurt US financial markets and weigh on the economy, including job losses and activity gloom.

2011 political deadlock over the debt ceiling:

The United States was on the verge of default in 2011 due to political deadlock in Washington over the debt ceiling. That crashed US stocks and cost the nation its top-tier AAA credit rating from Standard & Poor. According to a research report from Goldman Sachs, the S&P 500 plummeted 15 per cent during the 2011 crisis, while the stock of those firms with the highest sales exposure to US federal spending fell by a quarter.

Sonia Gandhi, the former president of India’s grand-old party Congress, was admitted to a hospital in Delhi on Wednesday following complaints of respiratory infection.

Sonia Gandhi, the former president of India’s grand-old party Congress, was admitted to a hospital in Delhi on Wednesday following complaints of respiratory infection. The Congress politician was accompanied by her daughter and party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, PTI news agency reported quoting sources. Sonia is now undergoing treatment at Ganga Ram Hospital. The report added that this was a routine check-up for the 76-year-old leader, who has been unwell since Tuesday. A hospital bulletin issued by the hospital in the evening stated that she has been admitted for observation, reports PTI. "Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, UPA, has been admitted to our hospital today. She has been admitted in Department of Chest Medicine under the care of Dr. Arup Basu and his team. Mrs. Gandhi has been admitted for observation and treatment of a viral respiratory infection," said Dr Ajay Swaroop, chairman of the hospital's board of management. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka, who were participating in the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ (unite India movement), had to return to Delhi after hearing about their mother’s health. The mass movement entered its Uttar Pradesh leg on Tuesday evening. India's top court on free speech of MPs, MLAs, says 'no more restrictions on free speech' The ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ resumed at 6 am from UP's Mavikalan in Baghpat district after halting there for the night. Rahul, who has been seen in a half T-shirt throughout the yatra in Haryana and Delhi despite the biting cold, was snapped walking in the march this morning. Sonia Gandhi has been battling health issues since getting infected with COVID-19 last year. She had travelled abroad for a check-up a few months ago. The Congress veteran had joined the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in southern Karnataka state and was later seen with Rahul, Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra in Delhi. The ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is one of the biggest outreach movement launched by the Congress party which aims to unite the country amidst what it calls divisive politics of the ruling party. BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Bhupendra Patel, the incumbent Gujarat CM, won from Ghatlodia after edging out Congress candidate Dr. Amee Yajnik by more than 50,000 votes. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel said that the results of the Gujarat Elections are quite clear and people have made up their minds to further continue with the journey of development in Gujarat. The Chief Minister said that he humbly accepted the mandate of the people and every worker of the BJP is committed to public service.

State BJP Chief CR Patil said Gujarat CM will take oath at 2pm on 12 December. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will take part in the oath ceremony. The Election Commission's most recent reports show that Patel received 80.86% of the vote, compared to Amiben Yagnik of the Congress, who received 9.81%. Vijay Patel, an AAP candidate, was placed third with 6.73 per cent of the vote.

Moreover, after registering a major win, BJP's Jamnagar North candidate, Rivaba Jadeja thanked those who accepted her as a candidate, reached out and connected to people. "It's not just my victory but of all of us," she said. Cricketer Ravindra Jadeja's wife, BJP's Rivaba Jadeja, was fielded from here replacing sitting MLA Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (Hakubha).

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) entered the election arena this time, making Gujarat's election a three-cornered race rather than the state's usual struggle between the BJP and Congress. 624 independents and a total of 70 political parties participated in the election. 101 candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and 26 from the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) ran against the main competitors BJP, Congress, and AAP.

1. AAP's Isudan Gadhvi, Chief Ministerial face: Gadhvi was picked after a popular choice of AAP. AAP's Alpesh Kathirya won party's first seat while CM face Isudan Gadhvi lost. Gadhvi had said earlier this week that it is difficult to predict results through exit polls but BJP won't form the government. He said the AAP win will over 51 seats in phase 1 and over 52 in phase 2 and exit polls will be proved wrong. Gadhvi opined that lotus is no longer as powerful as it was once and is declining in the state. While casting his vote, he had said: "I expect AAP to win 51+ of 89 seats in first phase and 52+ in second."

2. AAP Gujarat president Gopal Italia: Italia is contesting from the Katargam in the Surat district. The poll performance of both leaders is being keenly watched with the AAP having held an extensive campaign in the state. Even as Gadhvi had predicted a win for his party in more than 100 of 182 seats in the state, AAP managed to win just five seats.

3. Hardik Patel: BJP leader and Patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel won against Congress' Lakha Bharwad - who is the sitting MLA from the constituency. He earlier said that no riots/terrorist attacks took place in the past 20 yrs. He said that people know BJP met their expectations. "They press 'Lotus' as their future will be safe under BJP. It did good governance and strengthened this trust," he added.

Exit polls: Exit polls had predicted a huge mandate for the BJP in the state. This will be seventh term for the party in Gujarat. Early trends on Thursday were in line with predictions for the AAP too.

Gujarat Elections Results 2022: Bhupendra Patel to take oath as CM, Rivaba Jadeja wins with big margin

Sanjay Singh, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, is not holding back from acknowledging that his party has attained "national party status." The BJP is undoubtedly going to win the Gujarat Assembly Elections in 2022. However, he claimed that they became a national party in just ten short years. He also expressed his gratitude to the Gujarati people. According to the most recent results, BJP has won 131 seats and is in the lead in 25, while AAP won 4 seats and is in the lead in just one of the 182 constituencies.

What is the Election Commission of India's criteria to declare a party as a national party?

The requirements for a party to be recognised as a national party have been established by the ECI. Depending on how often these requirements are met, a party may occasionally earn or lose national party status.

What constitutes a National Party?

A national party is the one that is present "nationally," as opposed to a regional party, which is only present in a single state or area. The larger parties in India are often national parties, such the Congress and BJP. Some lesser-known parties, such as the communist parties, are still acknowledged as national parties. Being a national party is sometimes linked with a particular stature, although this does not always imply having significant political influence at the national level.

According to the Election Commission of India, a political party would be considered a national party if it is "recognised" in four or more states; if its candidates received at least 6% of all valid votes cast in any four or more states during the most recent Lok Sabha or Assembly elections; if it had at least four MPs in the most recent Lok Sabha elections; or if it has won at least 2% of the total seats in the Lok Sabha from not less than three states.

AAP in Gujarat Election Results 2022 and its rise as a National Party

In Delhi and Punjab, the AAP has strong majorities and significant vote shares. Additionally, it earned 6.77 percent of the vote in the March elections for the Goa Assembly. This meant that the party had already met the requirements for recognition as a state party in three states going into the Gujarat-Himachal elections. To be recognised in a fourth state and become eligible for recognition as a national party, it now needed 6% of the vote in the Assembly elections in either Gujarat or Himachal.

Sanjay Singh, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, is not holding back from acknowledging that his party has attained "national party status." The BJP is undoubtedly going to win the Gujarat Assembly Elections in 2022.

AAP in Gujarat Election Results 2022 and its rise as a National Party In Delhi and Punjab, the AAP has strong majorities and significant vote shares.

Gujarat election results 2022 give India its ninth National Party

What do U.S. Midterm Elections decide?

After securing an unprecedented third five-year term as the general secretary of the Communist Party, Xi Jinping unveiled the new seven-member Politburo Standing Committee—the country’s top ruling body—headed by him.

Among the seven members, four are considered to be close allies of Xi, including two of his former secretaries. Notably, none of them are females—a first in 25 years.

Experts say that the appointment of his allies showed a complete hold of Xi, who has rewarded his allies solely based on their loyalty.

Here are the men who will be ruling Beijing for the next five years.

Xi Jinping

On Sunday, the 69-year-old was re-elected as general secretary of the Communist Party, for the third time, making him the most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.

His elevation will make sure that he secures a third term as the Chinese president at the government's annual legislative sessions next March.

In 2018, the Chinese leader had abolished the presidential two-term limit, paving the way for him to govern indefinitely.

Li Qiang

Considered one of Xi's favourites, the former Shanghai party chief was promoted to number two in the party hierarchy, replacing Li Keqiang, who will retire next year.

Li—who oversaw a harsh two-month COVID-19 lockdown in the metropolis earlier this year—will likely be named premier at next March's legislative sessions.

"This showcases to everyone that loyalty rather than popularity is the key for your promotion," tweeted Yang Zhang, an assistant professor at American University in Washington.

"The disaster of Shanghai Lockdown did not stop Li's elevation precisely because he followed Xi's order despite all criticism."

Zhao Leji

The 65-year-old former head of the party's top anti-corruption watchdog was promoted to number three in the party hierarchy.

Wang Huning

Dubbed Xi's ideology tsar or the "brains behind the throne", the 67-year-old former university professor has been promoted to number four in the party lineup.

He has devised ideologies for three current and former Chinese presidents, and is the architect of Xi's "China Dream" slogan, as well as the country's more assertive foreign policy.

Cai Qi

The present Beijing party chief has been promoted to the Standing Committee and becomes the head of the General Secretariat, managing the day-to-day affairs of the party, according to a member list released by Xinhua.

The 66-year-old is seen as a close political ally of Xi due to his time working under him in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian.

Ding Xuexiang

One of the top aides of Xi, Ding has been promoted to the Standing Committee.

The 60-year-old regularly accompanies Xi on official engagements, becoming a familiar face hovering in the background of state media reports, never far from his boss.

Li Xi

Li, believed to be a confidant of Xi, was appointed to the Standing Committee—an appointment widely expected by experts.

The 66-year-old has known Xi since the 1980s after working as secretary for a close ally of Xi's father, revolutionary leader Xi Zhongxun.

He has been instrumental in building up a power base in Shaanxi, Xi's ancestral province.

He has been appointed to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the party's powerful anti-graft watchdog, as per a list released by Xinhua.

After securing an unprecedented third five-year term as the general secretary of the Communist Party, Xi Jinping unveiled the new seven-member Politburo Standing Committee—the country’s top ruling body—headed by him.

Xi Jinping On Sunday, the 69-year-old was re-elected as general secretary of the Communist Party, for the third time, making him the most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. His elevation will make sure that he secures a third term as the Chinese president at the government's annual legislative sessions next March. In 2018, the Chinese leader had abolished the presidential two-term limit, paving the way for him to govern indefinitely. Li Qiang Considered one of Xi's favourites, the former Shanghai party chief was promoted to number two in the party hierarchy, replacing Li Keqiang, who will retire next year. "The disaster of Shanghai Lockdown did not stop Li's elevation precisely because he followed Xi's order despite all criticism." Zhao Leji The 65-year-old former head of the party's top anti-corruption watchdog was promoted to number three in the party hierarchy. Wang Huning Dubbed Xi's ideology tsar or the "brains behind the throne", the 67-year-old former university professor has been promoted to number four in the party lineup. He has devised ideologies for three current and former Chinese presidents, and is the architect of Xi's "China Dream" slogan, as well as the country's more assertive foreign policy. Cai Qi The present Beijing party chief has been promoted to the Standing Committee and becomes the head of the General Secretariat, managing the day-to-day affairs of the party, according to a member list released by Xinhua. Also read | 'The world needs China,' says Xi after being elected as the general secretary The 66-year-old is seen as a close political ally of Xi due to his time working under him in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian. Ding Xuexiang One of the top aides of Xi, Ding has been promoted to the Standing Committee. The 60-year-old regularly accompanies Xi on official engagements, becoming a familiar face hovering in the background of state media reports, never far from his boss. Li Xi Li, believed to be a confidant of Xi, was appointed to the Standing Committee—an appointment widely expected by experts. "On 17th October, in a true celebration of inner-party democracy, over 9500 delegates of the Indian National Congress cast their vote in the elections for the post of party president. Today, the final verdict has been in favour of Shri Mallikarjun Kharge Ji. I would like to convey my warm congratulations to him for his victory. The decision of the party delegates is final and I accept it humbly. It is a privilege to be a member of a party that allows its workers to choose their President," read the statement released by Tharoor.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP also thanked the Gandhi family, especially former President Rahul Gandhi as well as her sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for their support.

"My thanks also to former President Shri Rahul Gandhi and Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for doing their own bit to support free and neutral elections. The Nehru-Gandhi family has held, and will always hold, a special place in the hearts of Congress party members - and with good reason too. It is my hope and belief that the family will remain the foundational pillar of the Congress, our moral conscience and ultimate guiding spirit."

Rahul Gandhi, currently on his Bharat Jodo Yatra, in a statement said that he could not comment on the role of the newly elected president.

According to reports, it was a landslide win for Kharge who received over 90 per cent of the votes cast. The senior Congress leader polled 7,897 votes while Tharoor trailed miles behind at 1,072.

This was the first Congress presidential election to be held in more than 20 years. Earlier, the chair rotated between the Gandhi family members with the mother-son duo of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi occupying the position since 1998.

India: Tharoor concedes defeat, Kharge set to be Congress party president

Xi Jinping addressed the 20th CPC Congress on Sunday. He spoke of some important issues and left others unsaid. Here are 5 key takeaways from the CPC. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

WION Fineprint | 5 Key takeaways from Xi Jinping's speech at the CPC Congress

Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to bring in new policies to arrest the fall of the birth rate as concerns mount over the rising ageing population in the world’s second-largest economy.

Addressing around 2,300 delegates at the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) congress in Beijing after securing an unrepressed third five-year term on Sunday, Xi said, "We will establish a policy system to boost birth rates and pursue a proactive national strategy in response to population ageing."

More than one-sixth of the world’s population is in China. Its population swelled from 660 million in four decades to 1.4 billion. However, the population rate has declined for the first time since the great famine of 1959-1961.

According to the latest figures from China’s National Bureau of Statistics, China’s population grew from 1.41212 billion to just 1.41260 billion in 2021 – a record low increase of just 480,000, a mere fraction of the annual growth of eight million or so common a decade ago.

Experts say China’s birth rate is expected to drop below 10 million in 2022 from last year's 10.6 million—already down 11.5 per cent from 2020, reports Reuters news agency.

In 2021, China’s rate was 1.16, which was below the 2.1 OECD standard for a stable population, making it among the lowest in the world.

China has been taking various measures to boost its population growth. After dropping its one-child policy in 2015, the authorities introduced three-child policy in 2021, aimed to prevent a steep decline in the birth rate.

Apart from that, Beijing has also been introducing various sops to encourage couples to have more children. These measures include tax deductions, longer maternity leave, enhanced medical insurance, housing subsidies, extra money for a third child and a crackdown on expensive private tutoring.

This comes at a time when the Chinese authorities have been wary of the Indian population surpassing theirs.

According to a UN report in 2019, by 2027, India is expected to add nearly 273 million people between now and 2050, more than China, and it is expected to remain the most populated country through the end of the current century.

China’s Xi Jinping vows to formulate policies to boost birth rate amid rise of ageing population

Earlier in June, China's ministry of public security started a 100-day operation. The aim of the operation was to safeguard the National Congress scheduled for the 16th of October.

WION Fineprint | China arrests more than 1.4 million ahead of the National Congress

With only a few days left for the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the security officials have intensified crackdown on unscrupulous elements and turned Beijing into a virtual fortress.

This year’s meeting, which is scheduled to take place on October 16, is significant for China, as President Xi Jinping is all set to be elected for an unprecedented third five-year term—a feat only achieved by modern China’s founder Mao Zedong.

As part of the Ministry of Public Security’s “100-day operation”, which began in June, more than 1.4 million alleged criminals have been arrested, surveillance of ethnic minorities has been intensified and travellers to Beijing are being thoroughly checked, reports Financial Times newspaper.

Additional forces have been deployed to some of the areas, which Beijing considers to be higher risk because of a large presence of ethnic minorities.

In the capital Beijing, security is tight around sensitive areas, like the Great Hall of the People, on the western edge of Tiananmen Square, where the congress will be held, and the Jingxi Hotel, where thousands of delegates will stay.

Moreover, people travelling on subway trains in Beijing have been asked to drink any liquids they carry in bottles only in front of a security guard.

“You know the congress is coming so the checks will be stricter,” a guard said at a Beijing metro station this week, reports the newspaper. “Please be co-operative.”

Reuters news agency has reported that China has hired more security personnel in the wake of the important political meeting, of which 42 guards have been assigned to keep 24-hour watch on "key people"—a term used by authorities for troublemakers—from October 6 to October 23.
