Since the first game between arch-rivals played in Kandy got washed out, the PCB, in coordination with the ACC, were said to look into alternate venues for Super Four stages to avoid games more suffering the same fate. With the players and the broadcasters reluctant to travel to Hambantota and Dambulla (optional venues), the ACC remained confined to Colombo as the final venue for the remaining matches.

"I'm sure there is a technical committee, represented by every participating countries, six nations. So, they must have decided with some other reason. Yes, it's not ideal. We would love to have an extra day as well. Other than that, I don't have much comment on that because they have made a decision," Hathurusingha said.

"We haven't spoken about that [reserve day] because once you've made a decision, we don't have much say. So, if we were consulted before, we would have our comment, but because it's already made, I don't have any concern. And we just get on with what we were asked. I haven't seen this kind of thing in another tournament. Changing rules in the middle of the tournament, so that's the new thing I can add to that," the head coach added.

The Bangladesh head coach remains concerned about the big game against Sri Lanka, an opposition against whom they suffered a defeat earlier in the tournament. Even in match-winner Shanto's absence, Hathurusingha believes his side can deliver against the Asian giants.

"We're very much aware of what happened in the past. But we have been playing good cricket. So, we have to play in a very different condition from the last two or three games against different opposition.”

"So, it's a big challenge for us, but we talk about how we are much more capable than what we have shown here. So, the inconsistency is the one we need to address. And then we actually talk about that and looking forward to having a good show," said Hathurusingha.

In this context, ACC members received feedback from their respective high-performance teams, expressing concerns about playing one-day matches in the UAE in the month of September. Such a schedule could have potentially led to player fatigue and an increased risk of injuries, particularly right before the all-important ICC Cricket World Cup," read the statement.

Nonetheless, the drama seems to be over now with the Super Four stage kicking off on September 6 in Lahore - the last match in the country - when Pakistan take on Bangladesh.

The Super Four games are scheduled in Colombo on September 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15, with the final set to be played on September 17. There are six Super Four games to be played and one of them is to be played in Lahore on September 6 - the last match scheduled in Pakistan.

Sri Lanka last recorded single-digit inflation in September 2021, when it stood at 5.8 per cent. As the island nation entered its worst economic crisis, the inflation rate rose to a whopping 69.8 per cent in September 2022.&nbsp;

According to the PTI report, the government statement noted that lower inflation was a result of a decline in the cost of food commodities. Based on the index, food prices decreased 1.4 per cent in absolute terms during the previous 12 months.

Due to the currency crisis, Sri Lanka reduced imports, which resulted in shortages and high costs. However, after the $2.9 billion IMF bailout in March this year, the government tried to resolve the recurring power crisis and lifted import restrictions. These actions significantly improved the economy situation.&nbsp;

PTI quoted Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank, as saying that the country will record&nbsp;inflation in single-digits in the third quarter of this financial year too.

Former finance minister and National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Basil Rajapaksa, left for Dubai early on Monday (May 07) aboard an Emirates flight, as per Ada Derana reports.

He reportedly jetted off for Dubai from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and is expected to travel to the United States from Dubai.

The younger brother of ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa was as per reports, accompanied by his wife.&nbsp;

According to Ada Derana, a spokesperson from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna said that Rajapaksa is on a brief visit to the US and is scheduled to return to the island shortly.

Earlier this year, Basil Rajapaksa had said that he was ready to give up his US citizenship as he believed it was an 'obstacle' to his political career and depriving him of the opportunity to serve the nation.

“I am ready to give up my US citizenship if dual citizenship was an obstacle to my future political activities. I am also ready to remove any other legal obstacle so that I can work for my people,” he said during a television programme.

Basil said Ranil Wickremesinghe achieved the two key requirements for which he was appointed the Sri Lankan President.

“Due to the ‘Aragalaya,’ we were unable to step outside of our houses and several properties of politicians were attacked and burned down by the public. But Wickremesinghe has changed that situation,” news portal Newswire reported, quoting the former lawmaker and the national organiser of SLPP.

Since he assumed power, Wickremesinghe was also able to resolve the key issues of fuel shortages and frequent power cuts, he said.

“At present, we are not facing any of those social issues. We believe he is an individual who has the capacity to resolve such issues and he has proven so,” the report quoted him as saying.

Last year, after protests by officials and passengers at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Basil was prevented from leaving Sri Lanka.

Then later, in September 2022, Basil was permitted by Sri Lanka's Supreme Court to travel to the United States to receive medical treatment.

Ahead of the 2019 presidential elections, Basil’s elder brother Gotabaya, formerly a dual citizen of both Sri Lanka and the US, had to renounce his US citizenship.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, the 76-year-old patriarch of the Rajapaksa family, has held the position of both president and prime minister during his political career.

He was also compelled to resign in May amid anti-government demonstrations in the country.

Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar are all contested sites with both Beijing and New Delhi competing for influence in these countries. There can be no denying the geopolitics involved in bilateral relations in the region. Time was when most of the South Asian nations were conceded to be in “India’s zone of influence”. Pakistan, as China’s all-weather friend, has been the long-standing exception to this rule. Despite its tilts towards China now and then, Nepal remained bound to India by civilisational bonds; and, the reality that China can never be and do for Nepal what India is and can do. In recent years though, that bond has begun to wear thin.

In Afghanistan, a prized trophy in the Great Game of world powers, it is open season for all powers big and small and India has long ceased to be the dominant influence. In Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh both India and China are engaged in expanding and strengthening their influence. Sri Lanka, too, among the South Asian nations once perceived to be almost exclusively in India’s zone of influence, is now witnessing China’s rapid rise as a counterpoint.

Other countries that could influence Colombo generally deferred to India’s primacy. China’s economic and military prowess combined with its massive investments, especially the development of ports and airports, seem to have changed that. Even India and the US together are finding it difficult to prevail against China in Sri Lanka.

This was borne out by New Delhi’s perceived hand in the Chinese ship Yuan Wang-5 being ‘stopped’ from docking at Hambantota. As it turned out, Colombo had not stopped but only shifted the dates of the ship’s visit for the same duration. If the first act rankled in Beijing, the second ruffled feathers in New Delhi.

That is the cause of the ongoing verbal spat between Beijing and New Delhi in Colombo. The Chinese ambassador’s article in a Sri Lankan media outlet found India rising to the bait and giving a “befitting response”.

Such exchanges between New Delhi and Beijing, and the underlying tensions these betray, are not doing the neighbourhood any good. India and China, as the biggest stakeholders in the region, need to recognise that their interests and South Asia’s would be better served by a purposeful partnership than such recriminations.
