According to the United Nations, Colombia is the world&rsquo;s largest producer of cocaine. In 2023, the cultivation of coca bush in Colombia increased by 10 per cent, when compared to the previous year, to 253,000 hectares. Bogota sent two air force planes to fetch some 200 of its nationals, including children, from California and Texas after initially turning back two US military planes carrying them.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused the first planes after taking umbrage at the treatment meted out to the expelled Brazilian migrants flown home from the United States last week, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles.

Petro posted photographs on social media Tuesday of his compatriots disembarking in Bogota without cuffs and wrote: "They are Colombians, free and dignified, and in their homeland where they are loved."
He added: "The migrant is not a criminal but a human being who wants to work and progress, live life."
Carlos Gomez, one of the deportees, said he had left with his 17-year-old son for the United States two weeks ago seeking "a better future."

"It is not an American dream, it is an American nightmare," Gomez told journalists on his return to Bogota.
At the migrant detention centre where they were held, Gomez claimed the food was "horrible," the guards abusive, and the conditions "worse than (those of) a prisoner."
Then came the attempted initial deportation from San Diego, with Gomez claiming he and his teenage son were handcuffed and shackled.

Petro insisted he would only accept migrants who were not treated "like criminals."
Another deportee, who identified himself only as Daniel, told reporters at Bogota's El Dorado airport that he and other migrants were roughly treated by deportation officials: their few belongings seized before they were cuffed and chained for one of the rejected US flights "as if we were... wanted criminals."

President Petro initially threatened to impose tariffs on US goods in retaliation for the US deporting migrants to Colombia. However, the White House later announced that Colombia had backed down and agreed to accept the migrants, including those arriving on US military planes, without any restrictions or delays.

The new proposal will prohibit the marriage of anyone below 18 years of age and is aimed at protecting the rights of minors. However, Colombian President Gustavo Petro still needs to sign the bill into law.

First presented in 2023, the proposal used the slogan ‘they’re girls, not wives’, which aimed at bringing reform to the existing law that allowed 14-year-old minors to get forced into marriages with parental consent, subjecting young girls to violence and preventing them from getting education and developmental opportunities.

“So it is a great message, not only for Colombia in terms of respect for the rights of boys and girls, but also for the world. Colombian childhood is important, we have to protect it and we have to care for it. So we are very happy that Colombia has just left the shameful list of countries that allow childhood marriage,” she added.

“A lot of the time these girls have no say on entering a relationship and then when they enter it they have even less. Their opinions don’t count, their dreams don’t count and they are viewed as objects,” Marta Royo, executive director of Profamilia, a non-profit organisation promoting reproductive health services, according to a Guardian report.

Once signed into law, Colombia will become one of the 12 nations in Latin America and the Caribbean to have banned child marriages.&nbsp;

CONMEBOL opens investigation for 'unacceptable' brawl after Colombia vs Uruguay Copa America semifinal

Ten-man Colombia defeated Uruguay 1-0 to reach the final of the Copa America for the first time in 23 years after an ill-tempered semi-final on Wednesday. A 39th-minute Jefferson Lerma header sealed victory for the Colombians, who will now face holders Argentina in Sunday's final in Miami.

It was an anarchic semi-final played in front of a packed and passionate crowd which ended with scuffles on the field and fighting in the stands, including several players who had climbed in among supporters amid the flying punches.

Colombia, despite having Daniel Munoz sent off just before the interval and facing plenty of Uruguay pressure, hung on for a famous victory to the delight of their massive following of fans.

The downtown streets of the North Carolina city were packed with partying fans in bright yellow Colombia jerseys hours before the kick-off.

Inside the 74,800 capacity Bank of America Stadium, it was like a home game in Bogota with only pockets of Uruguayan supporters breaking up the wall of yellow on all four sides of the venue.

Not surprisingly in such an atmosphere, Colombia started strongly with their livewire Liverpool winger Luis Diaz doing well to wriggle some space for a cross on the left, finding Daniel Munoz at the back post but the full-back's header was off target.

Uruguay were, as always, a threat on the counter-attack and their Liverpool star, Darwin Nunez, was close to finishing off one break when Rodrigo Bentancur found him with a clever pass but the forward poked his shot wide.

Nunez had another opening when Maximiliano Araujo played him clear in the inside-right channel but the striker rushed his shot, blasting high and wide.

At the other end, Colombia forced a turnover which led to James Rodriguez curling in a cross from the right but Jhon Cordoba's header was off target.

<h2>- Lerma breakthrough -</h2>

The breakthrough came in the 39th minute when Lerma rose majestically above Jose Maria Gimenez and powerfully headed home Rodriguez's corner. It was the sixth assist of the tournament for Rodriguez with the former Real Madrid midfielder beating the record for most assists in a single Copa, which was set by Lionel Messi in 2021.

Colombia looked to make the most of their momentum with Richard Rios forcing a save out of Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet, after being played in by Munoz.

But having been so influential down the right in the opening half, Munoz lost his head completely, just before the break, picking up a second yellow card, after landing an elbow on Manuel Ugarte.

It was a moment of madness which left Colombia to defend their lead with just 10 men for the entire second half.

Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo took off Rodriguez, who was also on a yellow card, in the 62nd minute as Uruguay gradually began to turn their numerical advantage into real pressure.

Nicolas de la Cruz threatened with a low drive before substitute Luis Suarez clipped the outside of the post with a drive from the edge of the box after good work from Federico Valverde. Valverde, the Real Madrid midfielder, then went close himself with a low drive as Colombia's back-line continued to ride their luck.

Giveaway from Uruguay keeper and fell to Mateus Uribe, who despite time and space placed his shot wide of the post.

In stoppage time Uruguay had a great chance to force penalties when Nunez laid the ball off to substitute Giorgian de Arrascaeta on the edge of the box but he leaned back and put his shot over the bar.

It was a moment of madness which left Colombia to defend their lead with just 10 men for the entire second half. Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo took off Rodriguez, who was also on a yellow card, in the 62nd minute as Uruguay gradually began to turn their numerical advantage into real pressure. Nicolas de la Cruz threatened with a low drive before substitute Luis Suarez clipped the outside of the post with a drive from the edge of the box after good work from Federico Valverde. Striker Nunez was among the Uruguay players, also involving Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez,&nbsp;who were seen punching fans in the stands. It is believed that some Colombian fans were seen hurling caps, cans, and punches at the Uruguay players when they were&nbsp;making their way back to the changing room after a disappointing 1-0 loss in the semifinal encounter, at the Bank of America Stadium.

Uruguay captain&nbsp;Gimenez opined on the whole incident after the match. He said, "It’s a total disaster. There wasn’t a single police officer. They showed up half an hour later. A disaster. And we were there, standing up for ourselves, for our loved ones."

He added, "Our families are suffering because of some people who have a few drinks and don’t know how to drink, who act like children. Hopefully, they’ll take more precautions for the next game so this doesn’t happen again because this is a disaster."
