Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has purchased a $4.1 billion stake in one of the world’s largest chipmakers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).&nbsp; According to the company’s regulatory filing with the United States’ Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, Berkshire Hathaway has acquired about 60 million American depository shares of TSMC&nbsp;in the three months that ended September.

The news of Buffet’s foray into the tech sector sent the shares of TSMC soaring by 8 per cent on Tuesday.

“TSMC welcomes all investors with the propensity to buy and hold TSMC’s stock,” a spokesperson for the chipmaker said.

TSMC, which makes chips for Apple Inc, Qualcomm and Nvidia Corp, accounts for an estimated 90 per cent of the world’s super-advanced&nbsp;computer chip.

She made her comments with regard to the Chinese military’s looming threat against the island, as Beijing attempts to assert its sovereignty in the self-ruled nation.

Recently in an interview to Reuters, the chief executive of Taiwan's largest chip designer MediaTek Inc, Rick Tsai, said that US-China tensions are already having an effect on some manufacturers who are mulling expanding part of their supply chain beyond Taiwan.

South Korea's SK Hynix Inc warned on Wednesday of an "unprecedented deterioration" in memory chip demand, deepening fears of global recession, and said it would slash investment after quarterly profit tumbled 60%.

Chipmakers had enjoyed a strong post-pandemic demand surge until early this year. But demand has turned sharply weaker in recent months as soaring inflation, rising interest rates and gloomy economic outlook have led consumers and businesses to tighten spending.

"We are hoping that the market will stabilise to some extent by second half of next year, but we are not ruling out the possibility of a longer downturn," Kevin Noh, Chief Marketing Officer at SK Hynix, told analysts.

Dire projections by Hynix follow warnings of decreased growth given by US tech giants this week. On Tuesday, Microsoft had projected quarterly revenue below Wall Street targets.

SK Hynix said its operating profit fell to 1.66 trillion won ($1.16 billion) in the July-September quarter, from 4.2 trillion won a year earlier. The result was below analysts' expectations of a 1.87 trillion won profit, according to Refinitiv SmartEstimate.

"Supply will continue to exceed demand for the time being," SK Hynix said in a statement, pointing to a fall in notebook and smartphone shipments.

The company said that memory chip prices plunged by 20 per cent in the third quarter. The company attributed this to dropping PC and smartphone shipments data centres prioritising using up existing chip stocks.

Chipmaker SK Hynix to halve investment amid looming recession

Authorities in the US indicted five Russians on Wednesday (October 19) for smuggling American electronic components to arm makers in Russia. Some of these components have been found on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Separately, three Latvians and a Ukrainian were charged for attempting to send a US-made high-precision industrial grinder to Russia. US Justice Department said that the grinder can be used by arms makers or in a nuclear weapons programme.

The department said the two smuggling networks involved front companies in multiple countries including Dubai and Germany. The networks were designed to evade US and global sanctions on Russia.

The first scheme involved buying sensitive technologies from US manufacturers like advanced semiconductors and microprocessors that are used in fighter aircraft, missile systems, smart munition, radar and satellites.

The Justice Department said Dubai-based Russian Yury Orekhov, Artem Uss, the son of a regional Russian governor, and the three others used a Hamburg, Germany-based firm for the operation, shipping some of the technology to Russian defence companies that are under US sanctions.

It said, for example, that Orekhov had travelled to the United States in 2019 to source parts that were used in the Russian-made Sukhoi fighter aircraft.

"Some of the types of electronic components obtained through the criminal scheme have been found in Russian weapons platforms seized on the battlefield in Ukraine," the Justice Department said.

In the second instance, the four arranged the purchase of a jig grinder made in the US state of Connecticut ostensibly for the European market, but sought to ship it to Russia. The grinder was intercepted by Latvian authorities.

A new study published by the scientific journal PNAS has shown that eating chips and drinking sugary beverages have&nbsp;a very low impact on the environment.

While analysing 57,000 products sold in supermarkets in Britain and Ireland, scientists found eating fruits and vegetables is better for the planet than eating meat and cheese.

Comparing the results with the nutritional qualities of these foods, the researchers hope that their study may allow consumers to shop more sustainably without sacrificing anything for their health.

As they are composed mostly of water, juice concentrates, sodas, or other fruit juices are among the products sold with the lowest environmental impact.

The more sustainable a food is the better it is from a nutritional point of view and vice-versa, according to researchers.

Instead of analysing single ingredients, the study focused on multiple ingredients including sauces, prepared meals, and others.

A major challenge that the researchers faced during the study was the fact that only about three percent of the more than 57,000 products sold by eight food retailers had their composition fully disclosed.&nbsp;

As ingredients are notably listed in order of quantity used in Britain and Ireland, scientists developed an algorithm based on the few known pieces of information to evaluate the missing products.

While red meat has a high environmental impact, bread has a relatively low or intermediate impact on our surroundings.

If plant-based alternatives are used instead of meat, dairy, and eggs, it will have large environmental and health benefits, according to the study.

The researchers said that knowing the proportions and origin of different ingredients in a better manner would help to determine more precisely their impact on the environment.

According to a report in the Financial Times, citing sources, Nvidia will instead spend up to $1.25 billion to Arm owner SoftBank for failing to go through with the transaction. 
Arm CEO Simon Segars will reportedly lose his job to Rene Hass, who ran Nvidia`s own Arm business many years ago.

The companies did not respond to the report that came out late on Monday.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in December sued to block Nvidia`s $40 billion acquisition of Arm from Softbank on antitrust grounds.

The deal faced scrutiny from regulators since it was announced last year.

"The proposed vertical deal would give one of the largest chip companies control over the computing technology and designs that rival firms rely on to develop their own competing chips," the FTC had said in an announcement.

Arm is a core supplier of architecture technology to most semiconductor companies. Its Arm instruction set is at the core of nearly all mobile processors powering smartphones, including those made by Apple and Android devices that use Qualcomm chips.

But the company`s role in the chip industry was historical as a neutral supplier, raising concerns that Nvidia could cut off competitors from essential Arm technology.

Some of Nvidia`s processors also use Arm-designed cores and its Arm architecture, although the company is best known for graphics processors, which use different architecture.

FTC Chair Lina Khan, who was appointed by President Joe Biden to lead the agency shortly after her confirmation earlier this year, has signalled an interest in more robust antitrust enforcement.

Out friends and family have tried telling us and given up (yep, look at that fat on you) But it appears fast food companies, who make us fat in the first place may have had an epiphany and have found a way to subtly nudge us towards eating healthy. Why else would a company making potato chips (or crisps if you are in UK) send a whole potato in the packet?

Such a thing happened to a man in UK. It is not known whether he chose to interpret the message the way we did and took healthy eating but like a good samaritan, he promptly put the photo online.

“We’re assuring them that the government will be a buyer and there will also be mandates in the private market (for companies to buy locally made chips),”

The govt is apparently also ready to provide assurances to manufacturers that buyers will line-up.

The report says the government will buy the chips and also set up a mandate for private players.

Companies in India could be asked to buy Made in India chips. Suppliers who make chips in India will be tagged as "Trusted sources".

And these chips will be eligible for use in a range of products from CCTV cameras to 5G equipment and everything in between.

This may be a compelling offer. But, it's not a unique one. Governments around the world are subsidising chip makers.

India has now jumped into the fray. But attracting these businesses to India won't be easy. The competition its intense.

US President Joe Biden wants 50 billion dollars to boost the US chip industry.

The proposal is part of his two trillion-dollar infrastructure plan. He plans to hike taxes on the foreign earnings of American companies to raise these funds. Biden wants to spend that 50 billion dollar budget in two areas.

One, for production incentives.

Two, for research and design.

The American president wants to create a national semiconductor technology centre. For research into semiconductors. Biden has been taking about dealing with the current shortage since the early days of his administration.

In February he met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss supply chain issues.

Then he signed an executive order.

It was for America's federal government to conduct a comprehensive review of supply chains for computer chips and large batteries.

The ones that are used in electric vehicles. Biden called these chips a "21st century horse shoe nail".

So America plans to become an aggressive player in the world of chips. It is also discussing an agreement with Japan for critical chip components.

India is in the semiconductor race too. So is China. &nbsp;

In 2020, more than 35 billion dollars flowed into China's semiconductors firms. That's an increase of 407 percent from 2019.

Until recently, China depended on the US For semiconductors.

Every year, it imported more than 300 billion dollars worth of chips from American suppliers. It was good business for American companies too.

They received 25 percent of their sales orders from Chinese markets. But in December last year. The Trump administration banned technology exports to Chinese companies.

Joe Biden is yet to lift these restrictions.

So, Beijing has now embarked on a mission of self-sufficiency in semiconductors.
