The US State Department said it notified Hong Kong on Wednesday that Washington has suspended or terminated three bilateral agreements with the semi-autonomous city following China's imposition of a sweeping national security law.

The ending of the agreements follows US President Donald Trump's order last month to end Hong Kong’s special status under US law to punish China for what he called “oppressive actions” against the former British colony.

The State Department said in a statement the agreements ended covered "the surrender of fugitive offenders, the transfer of sentenced persons, and reciprocal tax exemptions on income derived from the international operation of ships."

"These steps underscore our deep concern regarding Beijing's decision to impose the National Security Law, which has crushed the freedoms of the people of Hong Kong," State Department Spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said.

The Hong Kong government said the US decision to end the agreements showed "disrespect for bilateralism and multilateralism under the current administration and should be condemned by the international community".

"The HKSAR Government strongly objects to and deplores the US action, which is widely seen as a move to create troubles in the China-US relationship, using Hong Kong as a pawn," it said, referring to the city by its formal designation as a Special Administrative Region of China.

Trump signed an executive order last month that he said would end the preferential economic treatment for the city following the imposition of the draconian new security law.

The legislation punishes anything China considers secession, subversion, terrorism or collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison and has drawn criticism from Western countries that worry the law will end the freedoms promised when the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Beijing and the Hong Kong government have defended the law as necessary to restore order and preserve prosperity after months of at times violent anti-government protests last year.

Hong Kong has become another contentious issue between China and the United States, whose relations were already strained by differences over trade, China's claims in the South China Sea and its treatment of its Muslim Uighur minority.

US-China ties have deteriorated to their worst level in decades, analysts say.

"There's a certain apprehension with what's going on in Hong Kong," said Ong. "To be safe, we have decided to make sure that we relocate them (servers) to Singapore."

Bigo's biggest data centre capacity is in Singapore, along with other markets where it operates, such as India, the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

Still, despite its repeated assertions of independence and Singapore origins, India banned it, along with some Chinese apps, in June as presenting threats to the South Asian nation's "sovereignty and integrity", after a border clash with China.

India is among Bigo's biggest markets and the base of more than a fifth of its global staff of 5,000.

Bigo said it had appealed to both Singapore and Indian governments for help in the matter. Neither immediately responded to a request for comment.

Singapore is among the most popular locations for Chinese firms looking to expand overseas, since ethnic Chinese make up a majority of its population and Mandarin is widely spoken.

But even there, Bigo's situation exemplifies the growing challenges for firms in a world of increasingly polarised technology.

"The ownership of a company isn't decided by where the headquarters is, but who takes the majority share," said Xiaofeng Wang, an analyst with research firm Forrester.

If countries were to ban apps based on politics, companies would have few options even if they were separate entities from their parents with different brands, she added.

Asked if the company was looking at listing Bigo, diversifying its ownership or selling its U.S. business, Ong said it was weighing various scenarios, but declined to give details.

As the coronavirus pandemic forces people to stay home, Bigo has become a major growth driver for parent JOYY. Bigo Live has seen growth of more than 30% in monthly active users since the start of the year, with a corresponding figure of 50% for Likee.

China says it opposes 'barbarous' Hong Kong sanctions by United States

Pro-democracy activist Nathan Law has hailed US decision of imposing sanctions against Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam and ten other officials for their role in curtailing political freedoms in the territory.

"There will be more and more individuals that will be sanctioned. There will be second wave and third wave. Tension between China and US will rise. So, this is just the start of the whole disciplinary actions," Law said in an exclusive conversation with WION.

Law said that the whole Hong Kong government was working under the Chinese Communist Party. He vowed to pursue the fight for democracy and raising voice for legitimate demand.

"The Hong Kong youth demands of autonomic democracy, which the same Chinese Communist Party has promised Hong Kong people in 1984 and after the handover, so we are raising legitimate demand, but the Chinese Communist Party and Xi Jinping ,all they want is to concentrate power," he said.

Law said he had a "very constructive" meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as it sent "a very strong signal to the public that the US and the global Community would stay very focused on Hong Kong Affairs and human rights violation of China."

Law was a leader of the 2014 Occupy Central demonstrations, also known as the Umbrella Movement, which called for a freely elected government in Hong Kong. He was elected two years later to the city's legislature but then ousted with five others judged to have taken their oaths of office improperly.

Asked about how he thinks he can drive this ongoing evolution by becoming a voice outside his homeland, Law said, "The international front to the movement is so important because by having more International support from the government and from the people, we put more pressure on the Chinese government and hope for compassion and result of the movement."

Nathan Law is among the 24 charged over roles in banned June 4 Tiananmen Square vigil. He brushed off the facts that the majority of the Hong Kongers believe that the elections should have been postponed.

"If you look into a more credible data, &nbsp;then more than half of the respondents, do not agree that the elections should be postponed and only around 15 per cent of them agreed."

Law believed that the government "has not been Consulting any world democratically elected Congressman or parliamentarian and the government has not been listening to the demands of the people.&nbsp;

Fearing persecution under the new legislation, Law fled Hong Kong for London in early July, leaving behind family and friends.

When asked if he plans to return his homeland, Law thinks it is a distant goal for him as he may be "immediately arrested".

Last month, Carrie Lam postponed a Sept. 6 election to Hong Kong's legislature by a year because of a rise in coronavirus cases, dealing a blow to the pro-democracy opposition that had hoped to make huge gains.

The United States condemned the action, saying it was the latest example of Beijing undermining democracy in the Chinese-ruled territory.

Free from the harassment, censorship and restrictions pervasive on the authoritarian Chinese mainland, semi-autonomous Hong Kong has thrived as a safe haven for both local and foreign reporters.

But signs of the sands shifting have begun to emerge since China introduced its draconian new law earlier this month.

On Tuesday the New York Times announced it would relocate a third of its staff to Seoul, saying it faced unprecedented trouble obtaining visas.

Hong Kong authorities recently launched a review of independent but state-funded broadcaster RTHK following accusations it was overly sympathetic to pro-democracy protests.

Immediately after the security law was passed, two columnists quit the city's rambunctious Apple Daily newspaper, a staunch advocate for greater democracy.

The tabloid is owned by Jimmy Lai, a tycoon who Chinese state media has labelled a leading "black hand" colluding with foreign forces to destroy the mainland.

Beijing has made little secret of its desire to rein in Hong Kong's media, both domestic and foreign.

One provision of the national security law orders authorities to "strengthen the management" of foreign news organisations.

"It seems like they are starting to at least consider using the visa as a means to punish the people they don't like," said Keith Richburg, director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong and a former foreign correspondent for the Washington Post.

In 2018, Financial Times journalist Victor Mallet was refused a visa renewal weeks after he hosted a talk at the city's foreign press club with an independence activist.

Sharron Fast, deputy director at Hong Kong University's journalism programme, said the clause about foreign media in the new law "sounds ominously like Hong Kong will move towards a China-style press credential requirement".

The legislation also grants the territory's police and China's intelligence apparatus sweeping surveillance powers, something Fast said could make it harder for journalists to protect their sources.

"It is basically open season on interception of communications and online surveillance," she told AFP.

Much of the law is broadly worded and criminalises certain speech, such as a ban on instigating hatred towards the government or advocating independence.

Journalists fear they may inadvertently cross a red line by reporting what others say.

"The problem of self-censorship, which has already been a concern, will get worse," said Chris Yeung from the Hong Kong Journalists Association.

"It is likely that the mainland-style media control system and mechanism will be gradually introduced in Hong Kong."

But London City University lecturer Chan said the press would not be easily tamed.

"Journalists in Hong Kong will do as much as they can for as long as they can," she said.

Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order to end preferential economic treatment for Hong Kong, allowing him to impose sanctions and visa restrictions on Chinese officials and financial institutions involved in the imposition of the law.

The New York Times on Wednesday said it was moving its digital news hub from Hong Kong to South Korea as a result of a national security law Beijing imposed on the city.

"China's sweeping new national security law in Hong Kong has created a lot of uncertainty about what the new rules will mean to our operation and our journalism," executives wrote in an email to staff, according to a news report published on the New York Times website.

"We feel it is prudent to make contingency plans and begin to diversify our editing staff around the region."

Leaked footage during the 2011 dispute showed him berating villagers and calling foreign media "rotten".

The new legislation gives the security office greater enforcement action and powers to take suspects onto the mainland, as well as granting privileges for agents, including that Hong Kong authorities cannot inspect their vehicles.

Some activists have been keeping a low profile or leaving.

Demosisto, a pro-democracy group led by Joshua Wong, disbanded hours after the legislation was passed, while prominent group member Nathan Law left the city.

Officials insisted there had been wide consultation with members of Hong Kong society and hit back at claims it was undermining Hong Kong's autonomy.

"If what we want is one country, one system, it would have been simple," Zhang said.

"We are completely able to impose the criminal law, the criminal procedure and the national security law and other national laws on Hong Kong.

"Why would we need to put so much effort into formulating a national security law tailor-made for Hong Kong?"

Zhang also insisted that the law -- which he said cannot be applied retrospectively -- was only to target "a handful of criminals" and "not the entire opposition camp."

"The purpose of enacting Hong Kong's national security law is definitely not to target Hong Kong's opposition camp, pro-democracy camp, as the enemy," he said.

Instead, the One Country, Two Systems policy showed the government's "political tolerance", he said.

His comments come a day after Hong Kong pro-democracy party Demosisto announced it was disbanding, following the passing of the law.

Zhang also lashed out at suggestions of punishment from other nations.

"As for... some countries now saying that they will impose severe sanctions on some Chinese officials, I think this is the logic of bandits."

A group of 27 countries including Britain, France, Germany and Japan, made a rare oral rebuke of China at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday and urged Beijing to reconsider the law.

Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said in a separate briefing that 53 countries had made a joint statement at the council to "support China's policy on Hong Kong."
