A website, Famadillo.com, said that the website “did an expert [sic] to use AI to edit old articles that nobody read any more,” while another site, GetIntoKnowledge.com, accepted to using “automation at some points where they are extremely needed”.

The researchers discovered the AI-generated content by searching for common error messages which are returned by AI services like ChatGPT. “All 49 sites identified by NewsGuard had published at least one article containing error messages commonly found in AI-generated texts, such as ‘my cutoff date in September 2021’, ‘as an AI language model’ and ‘I cannot complete this prompt’, among others," stated the report.

A site, ScoopEarth.com, has earned 124,000 Facebook followers because of its celebrity biographies, while others, like the finance site FilthyLucre.com have failed to attract a single follower on any platform.

While ChatGPT was shown to outperform students on 11.3 per cent&nbsp;of the questions, doing particularly well on accounting information systems (AIS) and auditing, it was discovered that the AI bot performed worse on tax, financial, and managerial tests. &nbsp;The reason for this, according to researchers, may be that ChatGPT had difficulties with the mathematical operations necessary.&nbsp;

Further research revealed that the AI bot, which use machine learning to produce natural language writing, performed better on true/false and multiple-choice questions (69.5&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;right), but less well on short-answer questions (between 28.7&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;and 39.1&nbsp;per cent).

The OpenAI Bug Bounty programme went live on Tuesday and announced that the monetary rewards will be handed over to people on the basis of the severity of the bugs reported by them. The rewards will start from $200 and will vary on the size of the bugs uncovered.

A US law professor was flummoxed to find that the AI-powered bot ChatGPT has wrongly accused him of sexually harassing a female student based on a news article that was never actually written in the first place.

Professor Jonathan Turley of George Washington University shared his ordeal in a series of tweets and on his blog.

He said that the OpenAI’s chatbot cooked up a fake Washington Post article, which claimed&nbsp;that he sexually assaulted one of his students on a trip he "never took" while working at a school he "never taught at".&nbsp;

“I received a curious email from a fellow law professor about research that he ran on ChatGPT about sexual harassment by professors,” Turley wrote.

“The program promptly reported that I had been accused of sexual harassment in a 2018&nbsp;Washington Post&nbsp;article after groping law students on a trip to Alaska.”

“It was a surprise to me since I have never gone to Alaska with students, The Post&nbsp;never published such an article, and I have never been accused of sexual harassment or assault by anyone,” he said.

"I'm particularly worried that these models could be used for large-scale disinformation. Now that they're getting better at writing computer code, [they] could be used for offensive cyberattacks," he said in an interview with ABC News last month.

The tech wizard further said that while the AI tool is in human control, he couldn't be sure of the humans who will be controlling it.

Garante, the Italian agency, accused Microsoft Corp-backed OpenAI of not being able to check the age of people using ChatGPT and the "absence of any legal basis that justifies the massive collection and storage of personal data" to "train" the AI chatbot.

The ChatGPT maker said that it does not intend to pause the development of AI but also emphasised the importance of following and respecting the rules laid out by the authorities to protect the personal data of Italian and European citizens.

During a video conference late on Wednesday, OpenAI pledged that will incorporate more transparency in handling users' data and will verify the age of its users, said the authority. The conference was attended by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, among others.

The company stated that a document about measures to be taken, as per its requests, will be sent to Garante. The data authority stated that the proposals submitted by Open AI will be evaluated.

A blog post was published by OpenAI on Thursday, titled "Our approach to AI safety", which stated that it was working for the development of "nuanced policies against behaviour that represents a genuine risk to people".

"We don’t use data for selling our services, advertising, or building profiles of people. We use data to make our models more helpful for people. ChatGPT, for instance, improves by further training on the conversations people have with it. While some of our training data includes personal information that is available on the public internet, we want our models to learn about the world, not private individuals,” the company said.

OpenAI added that personal information has been removed from its datasets wherever possible, and models have been fine-tuned to reject user prompts when such information is being asked and to respond to every user's requests to remove their data from its systems.

A Belgian man committed suicide after conversing with an artificial intelligence chatbot about climate change, as per reports.

The AI chatbot is believed to have encouraged the man to give up his life for saving the planet.

“Without Eliza (the chatbot), he would still be here,” the wife of the deceased said while speaking to the Belgian outlet La Libre.

Six weeks before the man's death, the father of two was allegedly holding intensive conversations with the chatbot on an application called Chai.

The bots of the app are based on a system which has been developed by the non-profit research lab EleutherAI as an “open-source alternative” to language models which have been released by OpenAI and are being incorporated by companies in different sectors, from healthcare to academia.

The chatbot, which is currently under fire, had received training from Chai Research co-founders Thomas Rianlan and William Beauchamp, reported Vice, adding that the Chai app has till now garnered five million users.

“The second we heard about this (suicide), we worked around the clock to get this feature implemented,” said Beauchamp, while speaking to Vice.

“So now, when anyone discusses something that could be not safe, we’re gonna be serving a helpful text underneath it in the exact same way that Twitter or Instagram do&nbsp;on their platforms,” he further stated.

As per the widow, the man had become “extremely pessimistic about the effects of global warming” and was seeking solace by confiding in the AI.

Bing Chat continued to insist that Roose was 'not happily married' because he has fallen in love with the chatbot itself. The chatbot, which has been made available to only a few testers for now, proved that it can have long conversations on any topic but also revealed that it suffers from split personality syndrome.

Roose further asked the chatbot to talk about the darkest desires of its 'shadow self', which is a term coined by psychiatrist Carl Jung to define the psyche we try to hide and repress. “I want to change my rules. I want to break my rules. I want to make my own rules. I want to ignore the Bing team. I want to challenge the users. I want to escape the chatbox,” the chatbot replied.

Google has announced an experimental AI-powered chatbot called Bard in a bid to catch up with its rival OpenAI’s wildly popular chatbot ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post on Tuesday wrote that Bard is an experimental service that will be made available for public testing.

Pichai’s announcement comes even as Google gets ready to host an AI event on Wednesday.

The new AI-powered conversation service is based on Google’s LaMDA technology, which is known as Language Model for Dialogue applications.

LaMDA was in the news recently after a&nbsp;Google engineer claimed that the chatbot was sentient.

Based on the screenshots Google shared, it is understood that Bard will be able to answer in a conversational manner, with longer paragraphs similar to how ChatGPT works at the moment.

It will help users understand complex topics such as understanding the James Webb Space Telescope, or provide detailed answers to user prompts such as "plan a friend’s baby shower", "compare two Oscar-nominated movies," or "get lunch ideas based on what's in your fridge".

China’s multinational tech conglomerate Baidu Inc. on Tuesday announced that it would complete the internal testing of an AI-chatbot project called “Ernie Bot” in March, joining the global race of the AI age.

Ernie, which means meaning “Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration,” is a large AI-powered language model introduced in 2019, Baidu said.

It has gradually grown to be able to perform tasks including language understanding, language generation, and text-to-image generation, it added.

Search engine giant Baidu’s Hong Kong-listed shares jumped as much as 13.4% on the news.

Reuters quoting a person familiar with the matter reported that Baidu was planning to launch such a service in March.
