Two planes collide mid-air in Northern California, at least 2 killed: Reports

On Saturday night, a monkey at a zoo in California dialled 911 using the zoo's cellphone after finding it. The 911 call, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office, was disconnected. And no one answered when dispatchers tried to phone the number back.

Deputies were then dispatched to the location of the cellphone to see whether assistance was needed. When they got to the offices of Zoo to You, which are close to Paso Robles, no one had placed the call.

The sheriff's office wrote on Facebook, "Was someone trying to make us look like a monkey's uncle?"

The likely caller was eventually identified as Route, a capuchin monkey from the zoo. The golf buggy used by the zoo to get about the 40-acre property seems to have been scooped up by Route.

"We're told capuchin monkeys are very inquisitive and will grab anything and everything and just start pushing buttons," the sheriff's office said. The monkey had apparently just happened to push the right combination of numbers to call emergency services.

The social media post read, "Our Deputies have seen their fair share of 'monkey business' in the County. But nothing quite like this. Route is a little embarrassed by the whole thing. But you can't really blame her, after all monkey see, monkey do."

It's unclear whether the monkey dialled 911 via the keypad, a feature that can be easily accessed by the majority of locked devices.

With the natural cycle of drought exacerbated by human-caused climate change and more than two decades of precipitation that was much below average, the Colorado River, the lifeblood of the western United States, is at catastrophic levels.

According to Washington officials, water supplies to some US states and Mexico would be reduced in order to prevent the "catastrophic collapse" of the Colorado River as a result of the ongoing drought.

The federal government announced on Tuesday that it was stepping in because the states that depend on the river have been unable to come to an agreement on a plan to reduce their usage despite years of warnings and a deadline set by Washington.

Amid drought conditions, US to cut water supplies for some states, Mexico; California remains unaffected

California, which accounts for a quarter of the world’s tomato output, is facing its worst crisis. Lack of adequate rainfall is forcing farmers to brace for a water crisis that’s undermining the crop cultivation.

As a result, the low production is having an impact on the prices of tomato-based products.

According to Bloomeberg, gains in tomato sauce and ketchup are overtaking the rise in US food inflation, which is at its highest in 43 years.

With weather agencies predicting hotter and drier conditions in the upcoming months, the outlook for farmers remains uncertain.

“We desperately need rain. We are getting to a point where we don’t have inventory left to keep fulfilling the market demand,” Mike Montna, head of the California Tomato Growers Association, was quoted as saying.

Moreover, the authorities have limited groundwater usage, and rising labour costs, fuel and fertilizer are making it difficult for producers to grow tomatoes.

“It’s real tough to grow a tomato crop right now,” Montna said. “On one side you have the drought impacting costs because you don’t have enough water to grow all your acres, and then you have the farm inflation side of it with fuel and fertilizer costs shooting up.”

Rick Blankenship, vice president of farming operations, Woolf Farming, said it now takes $4,800 an acre to grow and harvest a tomato crop compared with $2,800 a decade ago. Much of the rise has been witnessed in the last two years.

Data by the US Department of Agriculture indicated that the crop has been below the recent production peak of 14.4 million tons in 2015 for the past six years, and 2022 is continuing with the trend.

“Despite low supply and a substantial increase in price, contracted production has dropped significantly compared to the beginning of 2022,” it said in its May report, while noting that water availability is the main issue facing producers.

Climate change this year has brought marked changes to the weather patterns in the northern hemisphere. While Europe is sweltering under heatwaves with drought-like conditions emerging in several countries, the US, on the other hand, is about to experience quite the opposite.

A new study by Science Advances has predicted that exceedingly rare megafloods will become more common and more catastrophic in California, with the chances of the disaster developing in the next 40 years.

A megaflood is "a very severe flood event across a broad region that has the potential to bring catastrophic impacts to society in the areas affected”, Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with the University of California, Los Angeles, and a researcher involved in the study, told CNN.

Experts say that these rare superfloods could turn California's lowlands into a "vast inland sea”.

These massive floods previously happened once in a lifetime in the state. Over 150 years ago, a strong series of atmospheric rivers swarmed the entire state of California, causing one of the most exceptional floods in history following a dry spell that had left the West parched for decades.

However, researchers say that climate change is increasing the chances of these catastrophic disasters, causing them to occur every 25 to 50 years.

Though major floods have struck California, which is prone to these floods from atmospheric rivers, climate change is increasing the chances, and millions of people could be impacted.

The researchers based their findings from a 2010 analysis called “ARkStorm,” which is developed by the US Geological Survey with an interdisciplinary team.

After analysing the data, they concluded that a series of severe storms had the potential to pelt the state with enough rainfall to displace millions, impair critical infrastructure and transportation corridors, and cause close to $1tn in economic losses.

India has reported its first Monkeypox death. Meanwhile, American states like California, Illinois, and New York have declared a state of emergency. What explains the sudden flare-up in monkeypox cases? Palki Sharma tells you.

Gravitas: State of Emergency in California

California has become the third US state to declare an emergency over rising monkeypox cases. By declaring a state-wide emergency, California hopes to coordinate a better response to monkeypox, raise awareness and secure more vaccines.

New York and Illinois are the other two states that have declared emergencies over the disease.

According to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California has so far reported 827 monkeypox cases—the second highest in the country after New York.

The total number of cases in the country stands at 5,811. The outbreak has risen exponentially since the Boston health authorities confirmed the first US case in May.

These three major US states—California, Illinois and New York—account for 47 per cent of all confirmed monkeypox infections in the country. New York has emerged as the epicentre of the outbreak with nearly 1,400 confirmed cases as of Monday, reports CNBC.

"California is working urgently across all levels of government to slow the spread of monkeypox, leveraging our robust testing, contact tracing and community partnerships strengthened during the pandemic to ensure that those most at risk are our focus for vaccines, treatment and outreach," Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement on Monday.

"We'll continue to work with the federal government to secure more vaccines, raise awareness about reducing risk, and stand with the LGBTQ community fighting stigmatisation," he added.

Newsom said the state officials are working across all levels of government to tame the spread of the disease through testing, contract tracing and community outreach.

Last month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared monkeypox a global health emergency after 19,000 monkeypox cases were reported in at least 78 countries.

The outbreak is unusual because the virus is spreading widely in North America and Europe. In the past, monkeypox spread at low levels in West and Central Africa where rodents and other animals carry the virus.

According to the CDC, monkeypox is primarily transmitting through skin-to-skin contact during sex. About 98 per cent of patients who provided demographic information to clinics were identified as men who have sex with men.

After noticing that the trailer's lock had been tampered with at about 2 a.m. on July 11, the guards reported the robbery, according to Mileski. Researchers are attempting to figure out how the lock was cracked. In the unincorporated community of Lebec, which is roughly 75 miles (121 km) north of downtown Los Angeles, the Flying J gas station and truck stop, it was unclear how long the guards had left the vehicle alone.

According to Brandy Swanson, director of the organisation, the goods were put aboard the truck late on July 10 following an exposition held by the International Gem and Jewelry Show in San Mateo, California, south of San Francisco. She explained that it was heading to an event at the Pasadena Convention Center, which is located northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities announced on Monday that the robbery took place last week in a rural rest area in southern California after the vehicle's two armed guards left. Parents who sued popular platforms like Instagram and TikTok for harming children who have become addicted to their products will not longer be able to do so in California after the introduction of the first-of-its-kind proposal in its legislature.

Now only prosecutors can file lawsuits against social media companies and they will be liable for damages of up to $250,000 per violation for using features they know can cause children to become addicted.

CalMatters reported that the legislation, which was introduced by Republican Assembly member Jordan Cunningham, was amended last month.

According to Cunningham, the change has been made to avoid opening ''the floodgates to frivolous claims.''

“Lawmakers seem to be more comfortable letting this be handled by the public prosecutors, who already end up taking the lead on this kind of consumer protection type stuff,” he added.

The bill is facing opposition from tech companies that are based in California which claim it is nearly impossible to separate social media content from the features companies use to deliver it.

If the companies conduct quarterly audits of their features and remove any harmful products within 30 days of learning they cause children to become addicted, the bill would exempt social media companies from these lawsuits.

Saying the legislation would give social media companies an incentive to police themselves to avoid penalties, Cunningham highlighted that most other products are covered under consumer protection laws that allow people to sue companies for selling products they know to be dangerous.

In a bid to combat the climate crisis, Los Angeles may likely ban the construction of new gas stations and may go all-electric. Once implemented, the car-reliant area will become the second city in California state to prohibit the construction of gas stations. The first city was Petaluma.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz announced that he is currently working on the policy along with several smaller cities across the US and Canada.

According to The Guardian, apart from Los Angeles (LA), other cities like Bethlehem, New York, and Comox valley regional district, British Columbia, are also working to bring policies that would stop the development of new fossil fuel infrastructure.

With its proposal, LA has inched closer to joining the SAFE City movement, a group of cities whose aim is to limit fossil fuel usage with local policies.

“We are ending oil drilling in Los Angeles. We are moving to all-electric new construction. And we are building toward fossil fuel-free transportation,” Paul Koretz, the LA council member who is working on the policy, was quoted as saying.

“Our great and influential city, which grew up around the automobile, is the perfect place to figure out how to move off the gas-powered car.”

Though there was no timeline provided as to when a draft ordinance or possible vote would be coming, officials said that Koretz is working to see the policy continue to advance by the end of 2022.

LA’s announcement came after a new report from SAFE Cities showed how gas stations pose numerous health, environmental, equity, and financial risks to communities.

Even small spills over time can significantly pollute soil and water and former gas stations make up a large portion of brownfield sites, the report states.
