BP&nbsp;is the latest energy major to post bumper second-quarter earnings as oil and gas prices have surged in the wake of key producer Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Prices also spiked after countries lifted Covid pandemic lockdowns, spurring global energy demand.

British rival Shell revealed last week a five-fold surge in net profit to $18 billion while France's TotalEnergies raked in nearly $6 billion.

US majors ExxonMobil and Chevron last week logged record profits for the same period.

Turning to the third-quarter outlook,&nbsp;BP&nbsp;forecast Tuesday that oil prices will “remain elevated ... due to ongoing disruption to Russian supply, reduced levels of spare capacity and with inventory levels significantly below the five-year average”.

It warned gas prices will also remain “elevated and volatile” as Russia also squeezes European supplies in retaliation for Western sanctions over the assault on Ukraine.

“The gas outlook was heavily dependent on Russian pipeline flows or other supply disruptions,” BP&nbsp;added.

The group’s share price jumped about four percent in London trade, as investors welcomed news of a dividend hike and a $3.5-billion stock buyback.

Revenues catapulted 86 per cent to almost $68 billion from a year earlier.

Windfall tax pleas&nbsp;

At the same time,&nbsp;BP&nbsp;posted a net loss of $11.1 billion for the first half of 2022.

That was sparked by a colossal first-quarter charge of $24.4 billion, linked to a decision to exit its 19.75 percent stake in Russian energy group Rosneft as well as its other activities in the country.

That wiped out the overall benefit of high energy prices in the first half.

Gas prices, which skyrocketed in March after Russia launched its invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, surged last week after Moscow curbed crucial deliveries to Europe.

The market remains at its highest level since March after state-run Gazprom suspended gas deliveries to Latvia on Saturday.

Back in Britain, the government in May proposed a temporary windfall tax on&nbsp;BP&nbsp;and its UK rivals including Shell to help ease a cost-of-living crisis.

The proceeds will help to fund a multi-billion-pound support package for consumers hit by surging domestic electricity and gas bills.

Rocketing Chevron and ExxonMobil earnings also prompted calls for a windfall profits tax on the sector in the United States, which faces the highest inflation in four decades as well.

A similar plea was made by left-wing politicians in France after TotalEnergies published its second-quarter earnings, but President Emmanuel Macron’s government has opposed such a move.

Britain-based campaigners slammed&nbsp;BP&nbsp;on Tuesday over its latest results.

“While households are being plunged into poverty with knock-on-impacts&nbsp; for the whole economy, fossil fuel companies are laughing all the way to the bank,” said Doug Parr, chief scientist at green campaign group Greenpeace UK.

Britain's High Court rejected Nicolas Maduro's latest efforts on Friday to gain control of more than $1 billion of Venezuela's gold reserves stored in the Bank of England's underground vaults in London.

The court ruled that recent decisions by the Maduro-backed Venezuelan Supreme Court aimed at reducing opposition leader Juan Guaido's say over the gold, should be disregarded.

It marked the latest victory for Guaido, who has won a series of legal clashes over the gold after the British government recognised him rather than Maduro as the Latin American country's president.

"I have ... concluded that the Guaido Board succeeds: that the STJ (Venezuelan supreme court) judgements are not capable of being recognised," the judge in the case said.

The Maduro and Guaido camps have each appointed a different board to the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) and the two have issued conflicting instructions concerning the gold reserves.

Lawyers for the Maduro-backed BCV board said the central bank was considering an appeal after Friday's ruling.

Maduro's legal team has said he would like to sell some of the 31 tonnes of gold to finance Venezuela's response to the coronavirus pandemic and bolster a health system gutted by years of economic crisis.

Guaido's opposition has alleged that Maduro's cash-strapped administration wants to use the money to pay off his foreign allies, which his lawyers deny.

The British government in early 2019 joined dozens of nations in backing Guaido, after he declared an interim presidency and denounced Maduro for rigging 2018 elections.

Guaido at that time asked the Bank of England to prevent Maduro's government from accessing the gold. Maduro's central bank then sued the Bank of England to recover control, saying it was depriving the BCV of funds needed to finance Venezuela's coronavirus response.

Legal experts have said the latest case has been unprecedented as it has seen one country's highest court interpreting the constitution of another.

"This is an unfortunate ruling," said Sarosh Zaiwalla at Zaiwalla &amp; Co, which represented the Maduro-backed central bank, adding that it would continue to pursue the case despite Friday's decision.

"The BCV remains concerned that the cumulative effect of the judgments of the English Court appears to accord a simple statement by the UK Government recognising as a head of state a person with no effective control or power over any part of that state," Zaiwalla added.

Law firm Arnold &amp; Porter, which represented the Guaido side in the case, did not comment.

In the financial year ending in 2020, the poorest 10 per cent&nbsp;of households spent more than half (54 per cent) of their average weekly expenditure (£298.90) on essentials such as housing (including electricity and gas), food and transport. Those in the richest 10 per cent, in comparison, spend 42 per cent&nbsp;of their average weekly spend of £1,073.20 on the same essentials. As usual, during any economic crisis, it’s the working class that suffers the most and are often blamed, even though it’s the fault of our elected politicians and their lobbyist friends and donors.

A perfect storm is brewing for many households in Scotland as a decrease in wages, increase in high food prices, and from April a massive energy price hike. Rishi Sunak, ex-chancellor and now an aspiring prime minister, has not extended the £20 Universal Credit last year as that would have help cushioned the impact a little. The current rate of pay and benefits don’t fit well with a rich nation like the UK. Prepayment meters will see the highest price rise and they are mostly used by the poor and most vulnerable in our society. It beggars’ belief that the citizenry can be so easily misled and benefit claimants scapegoated again and again for the deals made by politicians to rob the taxpayers via their friends and families' companies which are setup simply to steal money officially through various tax havens.

Overall, considering predicted energy price increases alongside a reduction in real wages and the planned increase in national insurance contributions, the Resolution Foundation feared a “living standards catastrophe” in 2022. It is estimated that taxes and energy bills would have risen by an average of £1,200 per household since April 2022 under current government plans.

The death of Paul Urey (45) has been confirmed by a British charity. Urey was captured in southeast Ukraine in late April, said Presidium Network. He was trying to help a woman who had been given permission to travel to leave Russian-controlled territory.

Urey was stopped at a checkpoint before being detained and was later charged with "mercenary activities" by DPR separatists.

Presidium Network said Britain's Foreign Office had informed Urey's family of his death.&nbsp;

Reuters quoted spokesperson of the British Foreign Office who said that office was "urgently seeking clarification from the Russian government on media reports that a British aid worker has died in Ukraine."

Asked about Urey, a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "They're clearly alarming reports and our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Daria Morozova, who has the title of human rights ombudsman in the DPR, said on social media that Urey had been suffering from diabetes and respiratory, kidney and cardiovascular issues.

"On our part, despite the severity of the alleged crime, Paul Urey was provided with appropriate medical assistance. However, given the diagnoses and stress, he passed away on July 10," she said.

Urey and another Briton, Dylan Healy, were detained at a checkpoint controlled by separatist forces in late April.

"A number of weather scenarios are still possible and at the current time, mid- or perhaps high-30s are looking more likely," she added.&nbsp;

The extreme heat warning was classified as "amber", the second-highest of three, indicating a "high impact" on daily life and people.&nbsp;

But museum chairman George Osborne, Britain's former finance minister&nbsp;said in an interview Tuesday night that he believed there is a "deal to be done" to share the priceless artworks.

"In the British Museum they tell a story about civilisation compared to all the other civilisations, China, India, other parts of the Mediterranean," he told LBC radio.

"In Greece they only tell the story of Greek civilisation."

"I think there is a deal to be done where we can tell both stories, in Athens and in London, if we both approach this without a load of preconditions, without a load of red lines."

The Parthenon temple was built in the 5th century BCE on the Acropolis to honour Athena, the patron goddess of Athens.

In the early 1800s, workmen took friezes from the monument on the orders of the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Scottish nobleman Thomas Bruce, known as Lord Elgin.

Elgin sold the marbles to the British government, which in 1817 passed them on to the British Museum where they remain one of its most prized exhibits.

Athens insists the sculptures were stolen.

In an interview last year, Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled out the return of the marbles, insisting they were legally acquired by Britain and legally owned by the British Museum's trustees since their acquisition.

Osborne noted that "I don't want to speak for all the trustees of the British Museum, we'd have to properly look at everything."

"Sensible people should come up with something so you can see them in their splendour in Athens, and you can see them alongside the splendours of other civilisations in London," he said.
