Britain’s former chancellor Rishi Sunak is leading the race to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. The Indian-origin leader has cemented his lead over four other rivals and has gained a sufficient lead in the first two rounds of voting.

Apart from former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the other hopefuls are Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt, UK foreign secretary Liz Truss, Chairman of foreign affairs committee Tom Tugendhat and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch.

In the first round, Sunak secured 88 votes followed by Trade minister Penny Mordaunt at 67. Meanwhile, in the second round, Sunak maintained the lead with 101 votes followed by Mordaunt at 83 votes.

Sunak who is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy is widely expected to make it to the final two candidates to be put to the party membership.

However despite the numbers on Sunak’s side, a snap YouGov poll of the Tory party has found that Trade minister Penny Mordaunt has a higher chance of winning the race than Sunak. Polls further suggest how Mordaunt is the bookie's favourite to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. Betting odds claim that Mordaunt has a 50 per cent chance of winning the election compared to Sunak at 34.7 per cent.

Until the past few months, Sunak was seen as the frontrunner to succeed Johnson but his popularity has taken a hit after he introduced several policies like national insurance rise which went down with the Tory MPs. Apart from this, the revelation that his wife the multimillionaire Akshata Murthy held non-domicile status which helped her evade paying UK tax was also brought to the table. However, this particular issue was raised by Sunak in the second round of televised debate where he asserted how he was proud of Murthy’s family and all that they have achieved.

So far there have been two rounds of voting and two televised debates out of which Sunak and Truss have emerged as front runners with Penny Mordaunt placed at third. The last televised debate saw some of the fiercest clashes between Sunak and Truss whose divisions on the economy and ways and means to combat inflation were laid bare.

Meanwhile, there have also been reports that have emerged on how Boris Johnson has privately told Tories to back anyone but Rishi Sunak for the country’s top post.

Despite mud-slinging and backbiting, the United Kingdom will have its new prime minister on September 5.

Rise of Rishi Sunak: Will he be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom is all set to get a new Prime Minister and the contenders for the post went head-to-head for the second time in a televised debate which was held on Sunday.

Race for Tory leadership heats up | Reports: Boris Johnson supports 'anyone but Rishi'

The resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has placed the nation's political system in a bind. He resigned in the wake of numerous scandals, and there is no clear successor in sight. The fight for the position of the next leader is becoming more fractious and volatile, exposing differences within the governing Conservative Party. The chosen five contenders are still vying for their place at the helm of the party and the country, and they're set to clash in their next televised debate on Sunday (July 17). As per Reuters, the upcoming debate may see them renewing "hostilities" over tax policy and issues like transgender rights.

Among the 358 Conservative lawmakers, Rishi Sunak, the former finance minister who was recently referred to as a "treacherous" by a top leader, has emerged as the front-runner. This week, additional votes will be held to narrow the field of candidates to a final two.

Reuters reported that in a poll conducted by JL Partners for the Sunday Telegraph, almost half of Conservative voters favoured him above his major competitors, foreign minister Liz Truss and junior minister Penny Mordaunt.

With the race for the UK’s prime ministership gaining heat, interim prime minister Boris Johnson has urged the defeated Tory member candidates to “back anyone but Rishi Sunak”, according to local media reports.

According to The Times newspaper, Johnson, who resigned as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7 after many of his cabinet ministers quit, has asked the failed candidates to make sure that Sunak does not become the prime minister.

Moreover, Johnson reportedly told the contenders that he would neither endorse anyone nor intervene in the contest.

According to the newspaper, this secret meeting is part of the “anyone but Rishi” hidden campaign that is being run by Johnson and his supporters.

The newspaper further reported that Johnson feels betrayed by Sunak, whose resignation triggered his exit even as he lost the support of his own party members.

However, Johnson felt that Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who has been endorsed by his fiercest cabinet allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries are able candidates to take the mantle of leadership of Conservative party, a source who had direct access to one of the conversations told the newspaper.

Johnson also reportedly indicated that he is open to Penny Mordaunt, the junior trade minister, succeeding him if it meant that Sunak is kept out of the race.

"The whole No.10 [Downing Street] team hates Rishi. It's personal. It's vitriolic. They don't blame Saj [Sajid Javid] for bringing him down. They blame Rishi. They think he was planning this for months," the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

Boris Johnson running ‘anyone but Rishi’ campaign, tells defeated candidates not to back him: Report

Race for Tory leadership heats up as reports suggest that Johnson supports anyone but 'Rishi Sunak'

Boris Johnson has resigned as the leader of the Conservative party and prime minister of the United Kingdom after almost three years in office. The political upheaval in Britain reached its tipping point after almost 50 ministers resigned from the Conservative Party, protesting over a series of alleged scandals — the latest being the allegations of sexual misconduct against a senior lawmaker in Johnson’s government. This ultimately dwindled the party’s faith in Johnson’s ability to lead. He is to stay on until his party chooses the next PM.

How long does Boris Johnson stay?

The Conservative Party’s new leader who will succeed Boris Johnson as the new British PM will be announced on September 5. As the party has a majority in the UK Parliament, the winner of the party leadership vote would automatically become the PM.

Who gets to vote?

First of all, this is not a general election. This is an internal voting that would take place within the Conservative party that holds a majority in the UK Parliament.

The party would choose its leader through a two-stage selection process.

First would be a series of secret ballots where 358 Tory (colloquial term for conservative party members) MPs would vote in the first round.

As of now, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak has won the second round with 101 votes, followed by Penny Mordaunt, with 83 votes, and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss with 64 votes.

He also won the first round of voting with 88 votes, followed by trade minister Penny Mordaunt with 67 votes and foreign secretary Liz Truss with 50 votes.

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt and Suella Braverman, the attorney general have been eliminated from the race.

Further ballots will take place in the following week, with the bottom-ranked candidate getting eliminated in each round.

The final round of voting happens with two candidates in a face-off. Around 1,60,000 Tory members would select their leader through postal ballot (voting through post or any electronic mode) as the next party leader and PM.
The result will be announced on 5 September.

What exactly are hustings?

To put it in simple terms, the final two candidates will campaign for the second round of voting through the summer months. ‘Hustings’ is another term for these campaign events.

The ballot papers would be sent through post to Tory MPs in August.

Take a look at the candidates

Initially, eight MPs from the Conservative Party qualified for the first-round ballot. Each candidate got the backing of at least 20 party members.

What is the Queen’s role?

As per age-old traditions, the outgoing PM appears before the House of Commons for the last time and then outside 10 Downing Street, before visiting Buckingham palace.

The outgoing PM places the resignation letter before the queen, after which a statement is released by the palace saying that the queen is “pleased to accept” the prime minister’s resignation.

After this, the departing PM’s car exits the palace and the one carrying the new PM will visit the queen. The new leader will seek permission from the Queen to form a new government. Once the queen accepts, the UK will have a new PM.

Breaking it down: How does the UK elect its new prime minister?

Days after UK PM Boris Johnson decided to step down from his position, the race for UK's next PM is still on. Who will Tory leaders select as their new leader is yet to be decided. Let's take a look at who's still standing in the race & what are they promising.

Race to become UK's next PM: Who's still standing & what are they promising

'The Guardian' reported that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was previously a journalist, might earn '‘north of £ 1 million’' for his memoir.

Citing publishing insiders, the report said that Johnson could start writing once again and publish a book about his time leading the country and earning a large sum from it.

The British daily quoted a publisher as saying that it was “way too early for anything concrete to happen or be submitted.”

“I would be amazed if he doesn’t sign up somewhere for memoirs at some point in the autumn,” the publisher added.

The book would command “north of £1 million” according to executive director and literary agent at Northbank Talent, Martin Redfern.

This is not the first time a British leader will write his memoir as David Cameron wrote 'For the Record while Gordon Brown wrote 'My Life' and both of them earned them sums of six figures.

Although all the money he made was donated to the Royal British Legion, Tony Blair’s A Journey was reportedly sold for an advance of about £4.6 million.

In a deal he signed in 2015 with the publisher Hodder & Stoughton, Johnson was also due to write a book about Shakespeare for which he was reportedly paid £500,000.

Former British PM Boris Johnson might earn ‘north of £1 million’ for his memoir

Race to become UK's next PM: Who's still standing & what are they promising?

Jeremy Hunt, UK’s former health secretary who lost the first round of voting, has said that he is backing former chancellor Rishi Sunak in the race to be Conservative leader and prime minister.

In the last leadership election in 2019, Hunt came second to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In an interview to BBC, Hunt spoke about his defeat saying, “Politics is about momentum, I'm afraid I didn't have it this time.”

When he was asked who he is backing, Hunt named Sunak, saying that he is "one of the most decent people" he had met in British politics.

When further queried, he said that the Indian-born former chancellor was someone of "formidable ability who has been thinking about the right thing to do for our economy, for families up and down the country, very hard over the last two years".

The former minister remained hopeful of the current race saying that it produced an "excellent list of candidates" which proved that the Conservative Party was "modern and outward-looking".

"In a period when we need to rebuild trust with the electorate that shows we are in tune with modern Britain," he said.

Sunak won the first round of voting by MPs to choose the next Conservative leader and prime minister. He got 88 votes.

Trade minister Penny Mordaunt came second ( 67) and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was palced third (50).

Other rounds of voting are expected to take in the next few days with the remaining candidates Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and Suella Braverman.

The final two will then be elected through a ballot of Conservative Party members. The result is expected on September 5.

The race for next leadership comes after Johnson announced his resignation last week, months after receiving criticism over lockdown parties in Downing Street and other issues.

In an interview to BBC, Hunt spoke about his defeat saying, “Politics is about momentum, I'm afraid I didn't have it this time.” When he was asked who he is backing, Hunt named Sunak, saying that he is "one of the most decent people" he had met in British politics. UK leadership hunt: Tory leader Jeremy Hunt backs Rishi Sunak for PM

After the former Health Secretary Sajid Javid pulled out of the contest, a total of eight Conservatives are now in the race to replace Boris Johnson as party leader and British prime minister.

After the former Health Secretary Sajid Javid pulled out of the contest, a total of eight Conservatives are now in the race to replace Boris Johnson as party leader and British prime minister. The remaining candidates have won enough nominations from their colleagues to go through to the first round of voting on Wednesday. The candidates had to get the support of at least 20 Tory MPs to be in the race. The remaining candidates are: Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi. Reports have mentioned that just minutes before the deadline, Javid withdrew. he said that he "looked forward to seeing the debate unfold". Apart from the health minister, junior minister Rehman Chishti also pulled out of the contest. The next process will include the first round of voting, which will take place on Wednesday. If a candidate gets less than 30 votes from their fellow MPs, she/he will have to drop out. Further votes, over the next few days, will decide the final two candidates, who will then go to a full ballot of around 160,000 Conservative Party members over the summer. Currently, former finance minister Rishi Sunak and foreign minister Liz Truss are top contenders for the top job. New UK PM will be announced on September 5 The ruling Conservative party earlier said that the new prime minister to replace Johnson will be announced on September 5. Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives' influential 1922 Committee, told reporters: "We do need to make sure there is a decent amount of time before the result is announced on 5th September." Sajid Javid pulls out; eight candidates in race to succeed UK PM Johnson

Eight Conservatives will fight it out to succeed Boris Johnson as party leader and British prime minister after winning enough nominations from their colleagues to go through to the first round of voting on Wednesday.

Only two hopefuls failed to secure the 20 necessary nominations, leaving a wide field of candidates seeking to win the backing of the party with promises of tax cuts, honesty and serious government - a contrast to Johnson who was forced to announce he would resign after a series of scandals.

Former finance minister Rishi Sunak is the bookmakers' favourite, and among those he will be taking on are his successor Nadhim Zahawi and foreign minister Liz Truss in what is becoming an increasingly bitter and divisive contest.

The next British leader faces a daunting in-tray while support for the Conservatives is also falling, polls show.

Britain's economy is facing rocketing inflation, high debt, and low growth as people grapple with the tightest squeeze on their finances in decades. All of this is set against a backdrop of an energy crunch exacerbated by the war in Ukraine which has sent fuel prices soaring.

As the contest intensifies, rival campaigns stepped up private criticism of each other and pointed to either financial or other questions hanging over their opponents.

Sunak kicked off his campaign by portraying himself as the serious candidate, promising "grown-up" honesty "not fairy tales", seeking to contrast himself with the extensive tax cuts pledged by most of the other candidates.

"It is not credible to promise lots more spending and lower taxes," Sunak said, saying tax cuts could only come after soaring inflation was tackled.

As finance minister, Sunak set Britain on course to have its biggest tax burden since the 1950s after he oversaw a huge rise in government spending during the coronavirus pandemic, and most of the other hopefuls have turned their fire on him by saying they would oversee cuts immediately.

Dirty tricks

Sunak has the widest support among colleagues who have publicly expressed their view.

Penny Mordaunt, a junior trade minister who is also heavily tipped, topped a poll of Conservative party members and she too has tried to strike a more measured tone on tax, saying that now is not the time to cut government spending.

"The others will obviously try to secure votes, they will try to put up flares for particular caucuses," she told LBC radio. "This is not the time to be making radical tax policies and promises."

Attorney General Suella Braverman; the former health and foreign minister Jeremy Hunt; Tom Tugendhat, chair of parliament's foreign affairs committee; and Kemi Badenoch, a former junior minister who is scooping up support on the right wing of the party, are the other candidates to enter the first round of the contest.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps earlier became the first candidate to end his bid, throwing his support behind Sunak, while Home Secretary (interior minister) Priti Patel announced she would not be standing.

Foreign Secretary Truss received the backing of two ministers closest to Johnson - Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg - who have both been critical of Sunak.

Dorries accused Sunak of using "dirty tricks" to manipulate the leadership contest, with votes being loaned to Hunt's campaign because they view him as easier to beat.

Sunak's team did not respond to a request for comment.

The 1922 Committee of Conservative members of parliament which is organising the contest says the field will soon be whittled down with repeated votes in the next few weeks, with the final two then selected by the fewer than 200,000 party members by July 21.

The winner, and Britain's new prime minister, will be announced on Sept. 5.

Meanwhile, the opposition Labour Party said the government was "running scared" after it blocked an attempt to call a confidence vote in Johnson on Wednesday to force him from office immediately.

Eight candidates make cut in race to succeed UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson

Tory bosses have set the timeline for the leadership election process that will see Boris Johnson leave No 10 in less than two months.

Who will be the next British Prime Minister? Will it be Indian-origin Rishi Sunak? He has launched a campaign for the big office. Several lawmakers have put their weight behind Sunak. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Britain's Game of Thrones: Who'll replace Boris Johnson?

A new report by news agency Reuters has revealed that Britain's main opposition Labour Party will put forward a motion for a no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government on Tuesday.

Citing a source in the Labour Party, Reuters reported that the vote is expected to take place on Wednesday.

According to the report, lawmakers from all the parties represented in parliament can vote on whether Johnson's government should continue in office.

With only a handful of remaining allies, Johnson is in a quagmire as if his government loses the vote, it could trigger a national election.

Political analysts believe that even though more than 50 government ministers and aides resigned from Johnson's government, they are not expected to decide to back a motion that could send voters back to the ballot box.

This is because the Conservative Party is trailing behind Labour in opinion polls after it lost some of its stronghold seats in the local election.

Following the mass resignation of ministers from his cabinet, Johnson said he will stay on as leader until his replacement is elected in early September.

However, if the Conservative Party did not act to remove Johnson, Labour had previously vowed it would put forward a vote.

United Kingdom to have new Prime Minister by September 5

Britain's new Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi has inherited at a point of time when the country is facing a cost-of-living crisis that risks pushing the UK economy into recession.

A recent report by the Observer suggested that before he was promoted, a flag was raised by officials over the financial affairs of Zahawi.

As per the report, civil servants in the cabinet office's propriety and ethics team are said to have alerted United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson to a HM Revenue and Customs "flag" over Zahawi before his appointment. Despite that, he was appointed Johnson.

As quoted by the media outlet, one source said this weekend: "It's extraordinary that flags were raised ahead of Nadhim's appointment by the Downing Street proprietary team. These sorts of concerns would stop someone receiving an MBE or OBE. The idea he could be chancellor or even prime minister is unbelievable."

As per the report, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has apparently investigated Zahawi, the Independent reported last week. There is no official comment on why he was probed. The investigation also did not lead to any action and there is no suggestion of wrongdoing.

Johnson appointed Nadhim Zahawi as finance minister after Rishi Sunak resigned from the post. Zahawi, 55, inherits an economy that will face immediate pressure to do more to help struggling households and to lower taxes which are on course to hit their highest level in decades.

Zahawi was previously the education secretary. He was replaced as education secretary by Michelle Donelan, previously a junior education minister.

Did Boris Johnson ignore when flags were raised ahead of Nadhim Zahawi's appointment?

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has announced her bid to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister and leader of the ruling Conservative party. Truss joins 10 other candidates who have begun to make their pitches including Sunak.

UK: Foreign Secretary Liz Truss bidding to replace Boris Johnson

United Kingdom's foreign minister Liz Truss has joined the race to become Tory leader and the nation's next prime minister. Truss entered the fractious contest on Sunday, by announcing her candidacy in the Daily Telegraph newspaper. AFP reports that Truss declared that she had "a clear vision of where we need to be, and the experience and resolve to get us there". The foreign minister is the 11th person to enter their bid trying to replace Boris Johnson and as of now, she is seen as the frontrunner in the nail-biting contest. Before Truss, the former defence minister Penny Mordaunt had submitted their stake in the Tory leadership contest.

Former British Cabinet minister Rishi Sunak maintained his lead as the race to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and next UK Prime Minister widened on July 10 with a total of nine candidates in the fray.

Rishi Sunak leads race to replace Boris Johnson as next UK PM

In his first public appearance since being forced to quit, Boris Johnson on Monday refused to give his backing to any candidate vying to replace him as British prime minister.

With the Conservative party expected to outline a timetable, 11 hopefuls have declared their intention to stand in the internal leadership contest.

When asked if he would endorse a successor, Johnson said "The job of the prime minister at this stage is to let the party decide, let them get on with it, and to continue delivering on the projects that we were elected to deliver."

The 58-year-old leader, who won a landslide 80-seat victory in 2019, announced his departure as Conservative party leader last Thursday.

Johnson had a spectacular fall from grace after being hit by waves of scandal including holding lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street and appointing a senior colleague despite knowing of sexual assault allegations against him.

This sparked a frenzy of resignations which forced Johnson to quit after which he blamed the "herd" for moving against him.

''There's a contest underway and that has happened and you know, I wouldn't want to damage any chances by offering my support,'' Johnson said.

After the latest in a series of scandals broke their willingness to support him, Johnson was deserted by all but a handful of allies.

Boris Johnson refuses to give his backing to any candidate vying to replace him as British prime minister

The race for who is going to be sitting at 10 Downing street in a few months from now is heating up and there are 11 contenders who have now thrown their hats into the ring to try and replace Boris Johnson. The latest who has now entered this race is the British foreign minister Liz Truss.

As per an AFP report, the list now includes heavyweights such as former health ministers Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt and the current Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi. Who are the contenders?

Suella Braverman, the attorney general, former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch, and Tory backbencher Tom Tugendhat have also declared their candidacies.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is also expected to join the race on Monday, according to the Mail.

Who is at the frontline of this race?

Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who played a monumental part in sparking the cabinet uprising that resulted in Johnson's forced resignation on Thursday, is currently the front-runner.

Sunak and Javid both announced their resignations late on Tuesday, which prompted scores of their more junior peers to do the same and forced their former boss to step down as Tory leader 36 hours later.

After declaring his bid via social media late Friday, Sunak, who was ahead of Truss in the most recent survey of party members, received rapid support from numerous prominent MPs.

However, in a sign of the animosity that can taint the race, he has also come under fire from Johnson supporters. According to the Financial Times, Sunak's departure caused "huge anger" inside the departing prime minister's team, with one senior official, referring to him as "a treacherous bastard."

How will the party choose between the candidates?

As the number of contenders grows, several senior politicians have stressed that the field must be narrowed fast and that the final two-person shortlist to be presented to members should be determined within weeks, before parliament's summer holiday begins on July 21.

"Clearly what we would want to do, and I think even the candidates would admit this is, is to eliminate some of those that are clearly not going to get enough support to get in the last two at a relatively early stage," Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, the 1922 committee's treasurer, told Times Radio.

As Britain deals with the toxic confluence of rising inflation, widespread cost-of-living rises, a stalled economy, and relatively high tax rates, taxation is expected to be a prominent aspect of the race, along with candidates' stances on Brexit.

Eight Tory lawmakers, including the 'treacherous' Rishi Sunak announce their bid to replace Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson's expected departure on Thursday, after a tidal wave of resignations from his top team came just three years after he took over from Theresa May in an internal Conservative leadership contest. Since then, he has been trending globally and become the butt of jokes and fodder for memes online, with even brands from across the globe poking fun at him. In India, Fevicol too joined the fun by bringing back an old meme.

Fevicol, an adhesive brand, known for its savage takes on contemporary issues, retweeted a creative from 2020 as a commentary on the political drama unfolding in the United Kingdom. The post showed the royal crown of the British monarchy with a message, “Dear Royal Family, Kohinoor nahi, Fevicol le jaana chahiye tha (you should have taken Fevicol and not Kohinoor)”.
