On Monday, Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun stated that his company will not be able to increase the production of its controversial yet best-selling 737 MAX, due to supply chain constraints, majorly concerning the engines.&nbsp;

It is quite remarkable that a sector that was earlier bleeding due to lack of demand&nbsp;at the peak of the pandemic, is now troubled by the lack of supplies.

“It is the story of the show. Yes, it applies to us. averages don’t work very well for customers; predictability does. We have to be at 31 every month, consistently and predictably. We need our customer's commitment at every step of the way but we are not there yet. We’ll get into rate increases when we get into rate increases, but the supply chain isn’t ready for it yet,” said&nbsp;Dave Calhoun.

Engine procurement delay and lack of labour force

Calhoun further revealed that it was delayed procurement of engines from the makers that was delaying the aircraft production. "The supply constraints are in the engine world without a doubt and we have known that. And that will be the constraint for at least the next 18 months. We will work our way through that,"

The fragility of the supply chain system across the world was exposed in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. While the economies around the planet have started to open up, skilled and unskilled labour is still hard to find. Even Boeing is having a tough time assembling the right workers for its aircraft&nbsp; production.&nbsp; "There are a lot of things we can’t get done because we don’t have the people,” added&nbsp;Calhoun.&nbsp;

Boeing's competitor Airbus has nudged ahead of it in recent times. If the supply chain constraints are not sorted, the gap is expected to widen further.&nbsp;

Objectum Sexual: 23-year-old girl in love with Boeing 737 toy, looks to tie knot with it in future

The Indian aviation authority has put the Boeing 737 fleets of Indian carriers on "enhanced surveillance" after a China Eastern Airlines aircraft of the same make crashed on Monday with 132 people on board, its chief Arun Kumar said.

Three Indian carriers — SpiceJet, Vistara and Air India Express — have Boeing 737 aircraft in their fleets.

When asked what steps the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is taking following Monday's crash, Kumar told PTI, "Flight safety is serious business and we are closely studying the situation. In the interim, we are focusing on enhanced surveillance of our 737 fleet."

A Boeing 737-800 aircraft of China Eastern Airlines, which was on way from Kunming to Guangzhou, crashed in Tengxian County in the city of Wuzhou.

China Eastern Airlines -- one of China's three major air carriers -- has grounded all of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft after the crash on Monday.

There were no foreigners among the 132 people -- 123 passengers and nine crew members -- on board the Chinese passenger plane which crashed, official media reported.

Boeing 737 Max aircraft is an advanced version of Boeing 737-800 and both belong to the 737 series. The US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing did not respond to PTI's request for a statement on the matter.

Two Boeing 737 Max aircraft were involved in accidents in the six month period between October 2018 and March 2019, killing a total of 346 people. Following these two accidents, the DGCA had banned Boeing 737 Max planes in India in March 2019.

After Boeing made necessary software rectifications to the satisfaction of the DGCA, the ban on the aircraft's commercial operations was lifted after 27 months in August last year.

SpiceJet, Vistara and Air India Express did not respond to PTI's request for a statement on the DGCA's decision to put their 737 planes on enhanced surveillance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed sadness over the plane crash.

The Boeing 737-500, en route to Pontianak in West Kalimantan, disappeared from radar screens after taking off just after 2.30 p.m. (0730 GMT) - 30 minutes after the scheduled time because of heavy rain.

Indonesian Transport Minister Budi Karya told a news conference that 62 people had been aboard Flight SJ 182, including 12 crew. The detik.com website quoted him as saying the plane crashed near Laki Island, some 20 km (12 miles) from the airport.

A transport ministry spokeswoman said air traffic control at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport had asked the pilot why the plane was heading northwest instead of on its expected flight path just seconds before it disappeared.

There were no immediate clues on what may have caused the sudden descent and safety experts to stress most air accidents are caused by a cocktail of factors that can take months to establish.

On Tuesday, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) set out conditions for putting the grounded jets back into service, including new training and updating MCAS software implicated in the crashes.

Brazil's top regulator said Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA, the only airline to operate the model in Brazil, is implementing the required measures to resume flights.

Gol said last week it could resume flying Boeing 737 MAX jets by year-end.

Some regulators have been waiting for EASA’s decision before lifting their own measures as the 20-month Boeing safety crisis tested confidence in US aviation leadership.

The Brazilian regulator would apply the US Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) conditions for bringing the MAX back to service and downplayed differences between regulators.

EASA differed from the FAA in saying pilots could stop a “stick shaker” alarm from vibrating if it went off accidentally, halting a distraction thought to have added to the problems of the two crews in handling the fatal flights.

It also issued one temporary restriction on autopilot use, unlike the United States.

EASA represents the 27 European Union countries plus four other nations including Norway, which has 92 of the aircraft on order. Until December 31, EASA also represents Britain, which left the EU bloc in January.

Canada is expected to lift the ban as well, but uncertainty remains about China, the largest market for the jet and the first to ban it in March 2019.

US flights are due to resume on December 29, while in Europe the formal ungrounding will take place from mid-January.

While victims' family members applauded such reforms, they are also demanding that critical aircraft systems - like the MCAS flight control system linked to both crashes - be approved by the FAA, not just Boeing, and that manufacturers must be required to re-certify new aircraft derived from earlier models.

Boeing Co is aiming to conduct a key certification test flight on its grounded 737 MAX jet in late June, two people briefed on the matter said on Wednesday.

The 737 MAX has been grounded since March 2019 after two fatal crashes killed 346 people. Boeing told airlines it hopes to conduct the flight in late June, the sources said.

Asking for anonymity because they had not been authorized to speak publicly, they said Boeing had also notified airlines of a fix to address safety concerns about the placement of wiring bundles on the aircraft.

Reuters has previously reported that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not plan to clear Boeing for a resumption of 737 MAX flights until at least August.

The sources warned the date could slip into July for the certification test flight, as the dates for many milestones for returning the plane to service have been repeatedly pushed back.

In March, Reuters first reported Boeing would separate 737 MAX wiring bundles, flagged by regulators as potentially dangerous before the jet returns to service.

In early April, Boeing confirmed it would make two new software updates to the 737 MAX's flight control computer. But Boeing said software issues that prompted the updates were unrelated to a key anti-software system known as MCAS faulted in both fatal crashes.

The three European parties to the pact, Britain, France and Germany, have all stressed their commitment to saving it, in defiance of a call by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/soleimani-was-probably-planning-to-attack-four-us-embassies-donald-trump-273535">Trump</a> this week to join him in walking away.

France and Germany have warned for some time that unless Iran returns to full compliance with the terms of the deal, they may trigger the dispute mechanism.

But the Europeans are expected to wait for UN inspectors to report on what Iran is doing on the ground following its latest announcement.

Earlier Friday, French Foreign Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/we-prefer-to-download-black-boxes-iran-after-plane-crash-blamed-on-missile-273396">Jean-Yves Le Drian</a> warned that without action, Iran could soon be in a position to develop the bomb.

"If they continue to unravel the Vienna accord then yes in quite a short period, between one and two years, they could have a nuclear weapon, which is unimaginable," he told France's RTL radio.

Several other ministers at the talks restated the EU's continuing determination to preserve the deal, which they say is vital for non-proliferation and regional security.

But Lithuania's Linas Linkevicius said that without some substantial change, "it will be difficult to believe that this agreement could be alive".

"Several internal and international flights were flying at the same time in Iranian airspace at the same altitude of 8,000 feet (2,440 metres)," Iran's transport ministry said.

"This story of a missile striking a plane cannot be correct at all," it said in a statement.

"Such rumours make no sense," Ali Abedzadeh, head of Iran's civil aviation organisation and deputy transport minister, said in the statement.

Abedzadeh was reacting to rumours on social networks that the Boeing 737 was hit by a missile fired by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

He said Iran and Ukraine were in the process of "downloading information" from black boxes retrieved from the crash site.&nbsp;

"But if more specialised work is required to extract and analyse the data, we can do it in France or another country," he added.

On Wednesday, Iran's Mehr news agency -- close to ultraconservatives -- quoted Abedzadeh as saying Iran "would not give the black boxes to the Americans".

But the minister's statement on Thursday rejected "rumours of Iran's resistance to delivering the black boxes... to the US".&nbsp;

Iran says rumours missile caused plane crash make 'no sense'

<a href="Boeing 737MAX 8 jets stands idle at the company's delivery centre, just south of Seattle. It's one of an estimated four hundred 737MAX's stored in Seattle, many in a Boeing employee parking lot, as well as at airfields across the country.">Boeing</a>&nbsp;had hoped that the Federal Aviation Administration would re-certify the aircraft, grounded after two deadly crashes, by the end of the year. With a heavy order book, they kept producing the plane, albeit at a lower rate than before.

But when it became clear that re-certification and the lifting of the grounding order could still be months away,&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;announced they would stop&nbsp;production&nbsp;sometime in January, with 12,000 workers employed producing the aircraft being re-deployed to other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/wion-edit-the-fall-of-brand-boeing-268899">Boeing</a>&nbsp;manufacturing plants.

The news that no&nbsp;employees&nbsp;will be laid off when the&nbsp;production&nbsp;lines stops in January was welcomed by Jon Holden, President of the trade union representing factory floor workers.

"I think it was the right decision&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;made, to maintain our workforce during this temporary&nbsp;production&nbsp;stoppage. The reality is that it's important to maintain our workforce so that when the grounding is lifted, we're able to ramp up&nbsp;production, build a safe aircraft, meet the needs of the customers with the&nbsp;737MAX&nbsp;going forward," Holden said on Wednesday (December 18).

For workers on the&nbsp;737MAX&nbsp;production&nbsp;line at the Boeing&nbsp;Renton plant, the news came as a relief just before the Christmas holiday, but aviation analyst Scott Hamilton says the announcement of no lay-offs came with a caveat.

"Well, there's obviously still uncertainty because what&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;said was they aren't going to furlough, quote, "at this time", unquote. So how long does that mean?" said Hamilton, adding "Obviously,&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;maintaining the employee payroll at this point, before the holiday, is a real relief and committing to pay the bonuses that were earned, is a real relief to the&nbsp;employees&nbsp;but what does the end of "at this time" look like? We just don't know."

For the many small aerospace component manufacturers who supply parts for the&nbsp;737MAX, the immediate future is less certain. Its been reported that&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;has not contacted them as&nbsp;yet, with details of the&nbsp;production&nbsp;stoppage.

Thousands of other jobs are dependent upon&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;737MAX&nbsp;contracts, as Scott Hamilton describes, "You have a supply chain outside Boeing&nbsp;that is going to be affected. We're still trying to understand what that effect is going to be. There haven't been any public announcement by&nbsp;Boeing. There have been some stories reported that they're going to try to keep some&nbsp;suppliers whole, if you will, or at least sustainable. Other&nbsp;suppliers, we just don't know."

And it won't just be manufacturing that might be affected if the&nbsp;production&nbsp;shutdown lasts very long, or if jobs in the component sector are furloughed. The local economy is heavily reliant upon wages paid by&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;and its parts'&nbsp;suppliers.

For now&nbsp;Boeing's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/boeings-crisis-management-all-wrong-heres-what-a-company-needs-to-do-to-restore-the-publics-trust-205702">workers</a> are still clocking in at the Renton plant, but their union representative says the nine months since the&nbsp;737MAX&nbsp;was grounded has been hard on them.

"Our members care deeply about the work they perform, and they perform it in a fashion to build a safe aircraft. They are proud of the work they do. They are proud of the aircraft that they build, and it certainly has caused a lot of anxiety over these last several months," said Holden.

Boeing&nbsp;decided in November 2017 to defer a software update to correct the so-called AOA Disagree alert defect until 2020, three years after discovering the flaw, US&nbsp;Congressmen Peter DeFazio and Rick Larsen said in a press release on Friday.&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;only accelerated this schedule after the Lion Air accident in Indonesia, they added.

Boeing&nbsp;spokesman Gordon Johndroe said by email that a company safety review found the absence of the AOA Disagree alert did not adversely impact airplane safety or operation.

"Based on the safety review, the update was scheduled for the MAX 10 entry into service in 2020," Johndroe said. "We fell short in the implementation of the AoA Disagree alert and are taking steps to address these issues so they do not occur again."

Boeing&nbsp;has said it discovered the problem in 2017, soon after it began delivering its top-selling 737 MAX aircraft to customers. But it did not inform the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about the defect until after the Lion Air crash more than one year later, the lawmakers said.

The House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure sent letters to&nbsp;Boeing, supplier United Technologies Corp and the FAA requesting further details on the AoA Disagree alert, the lawmakers said.

The letter was the second such records request sent by the committee to&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;and the FAA related to its investigation into the MAX aircraft.
