As India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leads in the election results counting in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh – and Congress only setting its dominant foot in Telangana, a sudden meeting of opposition bloc INDIA was called on Wednesday, as per reports.

INDIA bloc's next meeting, which has been called by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi on Wednesday, is likely to sketch plans for next year's Lok Sabha election, reported the NDTV.

The news of a meeting by the INDIA bloc comes as Congress is trailing by a huge margin against its rival BJP in all the above three states - Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, according to the latest trends. Telangana is the only state where the Congress is likely to emerge victorious defeating the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi of K Chandrasekhar Rao.

The meeting is scheduled amid reports regarding turbulence and internal rifts in the bloc and its dangling future.

Is INDIA alliance drifting apart or uniting for future battles?

The rifts within the bloc came under focus earlier this month after Janata Dal (United) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is considered as INDIA alliance's founding member, accused the Congress of lacking in preparation for the crucial general election to be held next year.

"We have been speaking to them... pushing them forward in the INDIA alliance. But, of late, there has not been much progress on that front. The Congress seems to be more interested in the five assembly polls. We agreed to assign Congress the leading role. But it appears they will call the next meeting only after they are through with the state elections," Kumar was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The last meeting of the INDIA bloc was held from August 31 to September 1 in Mumbai after which the next date was set to be announced by the Congress.

The alliance had then stated that it planned to contest the 2024 election along with the current state elections "together as far as possible". However, the resolution had raised eyebrows and questions over the unity of the opposition as it tries to push hard to stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi from winning an unprecedented third term.

The comment of Nitish Kumar had surfaced after a squabble between the Congress and Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav over seat-sharing in Madhya Pradesh, as per reports. Yadav had said that the party had ignored a gentleman's agreement.

"If I knew, wouldn't have spoken to Congress," said the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Samajwadi Party chief.

Three political parties are eyeing to form the government in Telangana. Parties pitch promises on issues of agriculture, employment and infrastructure.

BRS, Congress and BJP face off in Telangana

As India readies for the upcoming Telangana Legislative Assembly election, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on Monday launched a scathing attack on opponents.

Hitting out at the Southern Indian state's Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), he claimed that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader was trying to strike up a friendship with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A realisation of might

Speaking at a rally in Mahabubabad, Modi said that KCR's party was trying to strike up a friendship with his party, the BJP.

"KCR realised the increasing power of BJP much earlier. For a long time, he was making an effort to strike a friendship with the BJP," said Modi.

He further claimed that "once, when he came to Delhi, KCR met me and made the same request. But BJP can never work against the wishes of the people of Telangana."

"Ever since BJP turned down KCR, BRS has been baffled. The party doesn't lose any opportunity to abuse me. BRS knows that Modi will never let it anywhere near BJP. This is Modi's guarantee," he added, as quoted by ANI.

A reiteration

As per the Hindustan Times, this is not the first time that PM Modi has made such claims.

Previously, in October, speaking at a rally in Nizamabad, he said that K Chandrasekhar Rao had visited him in Delhi. There, as per Modi, KCR expressed his wish to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Reportedly, this meeting, as per Modi, took place after BJP won 48 seats in the 2020 Hyderabad municipal polls.

"After the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections, KCR came to meet me in Delhi and said that he wanted to join NDA. He also asked me to extend support to him. I told him (KCR) that due to his deeds, Modi cannot be associated with him," he said.

A scathing attack

Launching an attack at opposition, Modi called the Telangana CM and Congress "equal sinners". He said that both BRS and Congress indulge in appeasement on the basis of religion and boosted corruption.

"Both Congress and KCR are equal sinners in destroying Telangana. So, the people of Telangana can't let in another disease after ousting one - I have seen this everywhere in the state. The trust of Telangana is in the BJP. You have determined that the next CM of Telangana will be from BJP. The BJP has promised you that the first BJP CM in Telangana will be from the BC community (Backward Class)."

Vowing that the BJP government will look into all the scams of KCR, he said that the part considers it its responsibility to bring Telangana out of the clutches of BRS.

PM Narendra Modi launches scathing attack on opponents in Telangana, calls BRS and Congress 'equal sinners'

Rajasthan polls: Youth puts concerns above party favouritism

Ahead of the highly-anticipated inauguration of the Ram Mandir (temple) in Ayodhya, situated in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has added an illustration depicting the temple on its social media handles.

The header of BJP's X (formerly known as Twitter) account depicts an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda with Ram Mandir in the backdrop and the inauguration date of January 22, 2024, written in Hindi.

Speaking about the illustration, BJP's information technology cell head Amit Malviya said the change was in keeping with the recent trend followed during the G20 Summit.

India's premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), will probe the charges in the cash-for-query scam levelled against Trinamool Congress (TMC) parliamentarian Mahua Moitra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey said on Wednesday (Nov 8).

Moitra is currently under the lens of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee after Dubey first raised the allegations.

"On the basis of my complaint, Lokpal has ordered a CBI probe into the Mahua Moitra's corruption that compromises national security," the BJP MP said on X in Hindi.

Dubey had approached the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal on October 21, accusing Moitra of accepting bribes for asking questions in parliament at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani.

What is the cash-for-query scam?

Dubey had earlier claimed to have received a letter from a lawyer named Jai Anant Dehadrai stating that Moitra accepted "cash and gifts" from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in order to "ask questions in Parliament" to target his rival Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the letter reveals indisputable proof of bribes exchanged between Moitra and Darshan Hiranandani.

The BJP MP further alleged that Moitra shared her parliamentary login with the businessman, and in doing so, compromised national security.

Darshan Hiranandani later admitted to the login sharing in an explosive affidavit but did not mention the cash for query issue, claiming that he had given gifts to Moitra as she had demanded.

There are allegations that Moitra's login was used multiple times from Dubai, where Hiranandani currently resides.

Acrimonious scenes in ethics panel

The TMC leader had also accepted that she shared her login ID, but claimed that the protocols of sharing credentials were not shared with the MPs.

India's equity markets could face a significant downturn if the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) does not secure victory in the upcoming national elections in 2024, warns Chris Wood, the global head of equity strategy at Jefferies LLC, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Comparing the potential impact to the BJP's unexpected loss in 2004, Wood stated that he anticipates a correction of 25 per cent or possibly more in the stock market if the BJP doesn't retain power.

While acknowledging that certain government-initiated reforms, such as the output-linked incentive programs to attract global supply lines, are unlikely to be reversed, Wood emphasised that there would be a substantial correction. According to Bloomberg, he expressed confidence in the market's resilience "The momentum is such that it will bounce back."

In 2004, India's stock markets experienced a sharp 20 per cent decline over two days following the BJP-led government's surprising defeat in national elections. However, the markets partially recovered after a Congress party-led coalition government assured continuity of policies aimed at opening up the South Asian economy, calming both the nation and the financial markets.

Wood also highlighted India's promising growth prospects, characterising it as the "best growth story in the world going forward," particularly in the Asian region. He suggested that ongoing challenges in China have only reinforced this positive outlook for India.
