A gut wrenching video from Kanpur surfaced online where a medical aspirant was thrashed by a group of men after he was unable to pay a betting amount. The video, which is doing rounds on social media, shows men mercilessly beating a boy who is seen crying with folded hands, asking the hooligans to spare him.&nbsp;

As per reports, the NEET aspirant from Kanpur was brutally kicked, slapped, had his face burned and a brick tied to his private parts because he was allegedly unable to repay Rs 20,000 ($239.5) after a loss in an online betting game.&nbsp;

According to the Times of India, six persons have been taken into custody by the police in relation to the incident.

Both victim and accused were students at a coaching institute for competitive exams and staying at a hostel in the Kakadeo area of the Kanpur city, where the assault happened on April 20.

In the end of the video, victim was let go by a threat: Pay the money within two days or the videos will be shared online. He failed to arrange the money and the clips were then posted online by the accused, leading to their arrest.

They have admitted to the crime, the police said, adding they are trying to catch the other accused.&nbsp;

Police in the state of Gujarat in western India&nbsp;have unearthed a major scam perpetrated by a Chinese man who made an app and duped Indian users to the tune of USD 168 million. Woo Uyanbe, the Chinese national, visited Gujarat, and collaborated with local individuals to create a football betting app&nbsp;through which&nbsp;he later duped 1200 Indian users.

Gujarat Police were alarmed by the scale of the operation. It formed a Special Investigation Team in order to find the mastermind. The investigators followed a trail that led them to Woo Uyanbe who was in China's Shenzhen region. It has been reported in media that the scam was run from Patan and Banaskantha in Gujarat.

Central Investigation Department (CID) officials said that they came to know of the fraud last year in June. They observed that scamsters were targetting people in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh through the "Dani Data" app. An inquiry was initiated by police in Agra and then the CID team found links to several people in north Gujarat.

"During our investigation, we learned that the Chinese national was in India between 2020 and 2022. He spent time in Patan and Banaskantha, where he met numerous locals and lured them with promises of wealth. He and his accomplices in Gujarat then launched the app in May 2022. It invited bets and promised substantial returns," said a police official quoted by The Times of India.

The huge scale of the scam means that Woo Uyanbe managed to steal USD 24 million per day. Those caught in the scam were aged 15-75

"The app was operational for nine days before suddenly becoming non-functional. It was then that people realised their invested money had been siphoned off," said the police official quoted by The Times of India.

The CID cyber cell apprehended nine individuals connected to the case. They allegedly helped Woo Uyanbe to funnel the money through hawala networks with the help of shell companies they set up.

An&nbsp;FIR for cheating and violations under IT Act was filed in Patan in August 2022.

Woo Uyanbe, however, managed to escape from India to China. The state is yet to go ahead with his extradition process. The report said that the mastermind continues to operate his network in Shenzhen in China and also from neighbouring regions like Hong Kong and Singapore. He has reportedly launched multiple such apps for fraud.

Chinese man makes football betting app, scams Indians of $168 million, flees to China

Phil Mickelson has placed bets worth a total of more than $1 billion during his career, including a $400,000 wager on the outcome of the 2012 Ryder Cup, according to excerpts from a forthcoming book published in US media on Thursday.

The revelations about Mickelson's betting are contained in "Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk" by professional US gambler Billy Walters, a former close associate of the six-time major winner.

In an extended excerpt from the book published by the FirePit Collective website on Thursday, Walters detailed frenzied betting by Mickelson over the past three decades.

A biography of Mickelson published in 2022 by US golf writer Alan Shipnuck reported that the golfer had racked up more than $40 million in gambling losses throughout his career.

Mickelson last year acknowledged he had struggled with gambling in the past, describing his betting as "reckless and embarrassing" and revealing that he had undergone "hundreds of hours of therapy" to address the issue.

However, Walters said the scale of Mickelson's losses had been significantly under-reported, and estimated the golfer had in fact made bets worth more than $1 billion in total.

"Based on our relationship and what I've since learned from others, Phil's gambling losses approached not $40 million as has been previously reported, but much closer to $100 million," Walters wrote. &nbsp;"In all, he wagered a total of more than $1 billion during the past three decades."

Walters and Mickelson's relationship ruptured when Walters was investigated and subsequently convicted and jailed over an insider trading scam.

Mickelson wasn't charged, but repaid almost $1 million from money made in the deal.

Walters says in the book he never passed on inside information to Mickelson on the stock deal probed by authorities.

"All Phil had to do was publicly say it. He refused," Walters wrote.

"The outcome cost me my freedom, tens of millions of dollars and a heartbreak I still struggle with daily."

Walters meanwhile added that Mickelson had attempted to place a massive bet on the United States to win during the 2012 Ryder Cup, looking to wager $400,000 on an American victory.

Walters said he rebuffed the approach, comparing Mickelson to Pete Rose, the former baseball player and coach who was permanently banned from the sport in 1989 for betting on games he was involved in.

"I could not believe what I was hearing," Walters wrote, claiming he told Mickelson: "'Have you lost your ... mind?' I told him, 'Don't you remember what happened to Pete Rose?'"

"'You're seen as a modern-day Arnold Palmer,' I added. 'You'd risk all that for this?' I want no part of it."

Mickelson triggered uproar in world golf last year after becoming one of the earliest and highest-profile defectors to the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf circuit in a lucrative deal reportedly worth $200 million.

During the Broncos' offseason programme, coach Sean Payton spoke at length about the efforts being made to make players aware and understand the gambling policy to the core.&nbsp;

Back then, Payton said, "We got a packet from the league. Obviously, when policies change, it's our job to educate [the players]. [Vice president of football operations and compliance] Mark Thewes was awesome. We're professional teachers. The packet we received, we looked at, studied [it] closely and then we presented it in our own PowerPoint. I probably had 20 minutes on it to really make sure everyone has it."

"If you're a teacher and half your class gets a D, you better look at yourself. It's not the policy, but it's the implementation, the understanding, and the educating of the policy. I presented a week and a half ago, and now someone officially will present [it]. Hopefully it won't be from that eight-page handout we received because that was more confusing after I read it than it was before I looked at it. I think we're all on the same page.," he added.

With many such instances of players violating the gambling policy, the league will be concerned and has to address the matter with more detail&nbsp;going forward.

England test head coach Brendon McCullum's association with a betting company is under scrutiny, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Friday.

"We are currently exploring the matter and in discussions with Brendon around his relationship with the Cypriot-based betting company, 22Bet," an ECB spokesperson said in a statement.

"We have rules in place around gambling and will always seek to ensure these are followed."

McCullum's association with the company began before he took over the England job last year but he has been seen in the betting company's recent YouTube adverts around this year's Indian Premier League.

"We are speaking to the ECB about this," McCullum's agent Simon Auteri told the Times newspaper.

"I am not going to comment on anything. We are working through it."

The new guidelines define online game&nbsp;as “that is offered on the internet and is accessible to a user through a computer resource or an intermediary.”

These SROs are part of the IT Rules, 2023, passed by the ministry and pave&nbsp;the way for the establishment of a self-regulatory body for the registration and regulation of online gaming platforms as "intermediary" which is defined as one that "offers one or more than one online game".

Minister of State for Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, while speaking to media on Thursday differentiated between “online game” and “online real money game”, claiming that the latter has been banned.

“We see the Indian online gaming ecosystem to expand and grow into a multi-billion dollar industry and be an important catalyst to India’s one trillion-dollar digital economy goal by 2025-26, with very clear restrictions on online wagering and betting,” the minister said at a press conference.

“We’re dealing with a framework that allows an SRO, and there will be multiple SROs, to determine whether or not all online gaming is permissible,” Chandrasekhar added.

According to the guidelines, the government will designate various SROs comprising industry representatives, educators, and other professionals such as child experts, psychology experts, and so on, according to the final guidelines.

The government is going to notify three SROs, but more might be added later, he said.

The online gaming industry has been flourishing in India for the past four to five years or so, and accounts for $1.8 billion of the gaming market, mostly fuelled by mobile games.

A report by the Boston Consulting Group and Sequoia on India's mobile gaming sector shows that more than 300 million Indians play mobile games, and the gaming sector as a whole has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 38 per cent in 2019-2020 and 37 per cent in the previous fiscal year.

Indian govt tightens screws on online gaming, bans betting and wagering

In what has turned out to be the biggest-ever show cause notice served by it, India's Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has asked a gaming company why it has failed to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST) amounting to USD 2.58 billion. The company on the receiving end is Gamesraft, an online gaming company based in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, India's IT hub, reported CNN News 18.

It is said to be the biggest amount of show cause notice issued in the history of indirect taxation.&nbsp; 
 
Gameskraft has been accused of promoting betting, an offence in India, through its games like Rummy Culture, Gamezy, Rummy Time, etc.

The company faces accusation of evading tax on betting amounts of USD 8.73 billion, says the report.&nbsp;

DGGI is an apex intelligence organisation functioning under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes &amp; Customs, department of revenue, Union ministry of finance, entrusted with the task of collection, collation and dissemination of intelligence relating to evasion of Goods and Services Tax across India.

DGGI found during the investigation that Gameskraft had not provided invoices for money its customers paid. Sometimes, even backdated invoices were provided.

The DGGI report mentioned by CNN News 18 says that the gaming company was inducing people to resort to betting as there was no provision to return money to the customer once he deposited it in the online wallet.

The report said that Gameskraft Technology Private Limited (GTPL) allowed its customers to engage in betting by letting them place money bets. It allowed betting on the card games that were being played online.

Gameskraft was founded in 2017 by a group of gamers.

Gameskraft e-mailed a statement to WION on September 26 explaining their stand on the matter. Here's what the company said,

"Games of skill are a constitutionally protected activity per the Supreme Court and various High Courts across the country. Rummy is one such game declared to be a skill game like horse racing, bridge and fantasy games. Therefore the notice is a departure from the well established law of the land. As a responsible start-up with Unicorn status in the online skill gaming sector, we have discharged our GST and Income Tax liabilities as per standard industry practice, which is now over a decade old. We are confident that we will be able to respond to this notice to the full satisfaction of the authorities since they have sought to apply 28% tax applicable to games of chance and lottery, instead of the 18% applicable to online platforms of games of skill"

Regular gamblers were more than six times more likely to gamble online compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new research.

The study, led by the University of Bristol and published today (17 May) in the Journal of Gambling Studies, showed regular male gamblers were particularly prone to gambling more often online during the public lockdown in the UK, compared to their previously reported gambling habits.

Although overall men and women gambled less frequently during the lockdown, partly due to betting shops being closed, some forms of gambling increased. For instance, usage of online gambling, including poker, bingo, and casino games, grew six-fold among regular gamblers. Respondents who gambled occasionally were still found to be more than twice as likely than before to gamble online. Those who struggled financially before the pandemic were more likely to report gambling during the lockdown.

Lead author Professor Alan Emond, of the University of Bristol's Medical School, said: "This study provides unique real-time insights into how people's attitudes and gambling behaviour changed during lockdown when everyone was stuck inside and unable to participate in most social activities. The findings reveal that although many forms of gambling were restricted, a minority of regular gamblers significantly increased their gambling and betting online. As with so many repercussions of the pandemic, inequalities have been exacerbated and particularly vulnerable groups were worse affected."

The comparative research used two online questionnaires during the first lockdown in 2020, which surveyed the same group of adults, aged 28 years on average, who had previously been asked similar questions about gambling before the pandemic as part of the renowned Children of the 90s study, also known as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

More than 2,600 adults responded and results revealed that during lockdown men were three times more likely than women to gamble regularly, defined as more than once a week. Drinking heavily, defined as more than six units in a session (equivalent to more than three pints of beer) at least once a week, was strongly linked to regular gambling among men and women. These trends are likely to be much greater in reality, as the majority (70 per cent) of respondents to the surveys in lockdown were women.

Professor Emond, a public health expert, said: "The strong link between binge drinking and regular gambling is of particular concern, as they are both addictive behaviours which can have serious health and social consequences. With the wider availability of gambling through different online channels, vulnerable groups could get caught in a destructive cycle. A public health approach is needed to minimise gambling harms."

The research builds on other evidence, including the YouGov Covid-19 tracker study,

which found that regular gamblers turned to new online options during the lockdown. Data from the Gambling Commission derived from the biggest gambling operators in the UK also showed increased revenues during lockdown for online gambling, especially on esports, which dramatically gained in popularity as live sporting events traditionally betted on were suspended.

Previous research in the Journal of Public Policy &amp; Marketing, led by the University of Bristol, has revealed children are engaging particularly with esports gambling advertising on social media.

Online advertising expert and co-author c Professor of Marketing at the University of Bristol's School of Management, said: "The results of this study and trends being reported more widely are quite alarming. As gambling habits shift online, vulnerable groups including children and adults who drink heavily may be more easily sucked into these channels. The increased prevalence of home working is also an important consideration for future policymaking, as the temptation to gamble online, amplified by clever advertising, is always there. Children are also falling prey to this advertising, especially for esports, on social media and could get locked into addictive habits from an early age. Stricter regulation is needed in this growing field to protect unwitting consumers."

The Interim Report of the Independent Review of Integrity said its two-year investigation had not revealed widespread corruption at the highest levels of the professional game globally although "there is nonetheless evidence of some issues at these levels".

The Review was commissioned by the sport's major bodies (the ATP, WTA, ITF and Grand Slam Board) in 2016 following a report by the BBC and BuzzFeed News which claimed 16 players ranked in the world's top 50 had been flagged to the&nbspTennis&nbspIntegrity Unit (TIU) over suspicions that matches had been thrown.

However, the panel chairman, Adam Lewis, said: "Match-fixing is unlikely at the level of grand slam. All the indicators are clear the problem is low."

Among the report's recommendations are&nbspa greater monitoring of the lower levels of the game, with one investigator saying there is a "tsunami" of problems, plus a review of appearance fees and the ranking system.

The report also called for greater education among players, the elimination of gambling sponsorships, changes to integrity rules and for the TIU to be beefed up and be truly independent.

"The integrity problems are greatest where prize money relative to costs, prospects of advancement, pubic interest and attention, and financial resources of tournaments are lowest," it said.

Tennis&nbspoperates under a pyramid system with young players competing in Futures and then Challenger tournaments of increasing value under the main tour.

The panel said the advent of online betting and the sale of official live scoring date have greatly exacerbated the problem and recommends that the ITF ends its data sale agreement at $15,000 Futures events, and probably at other ones as well.

The report dates many of the problems to the 2011 agreement between the ITF and data company Sportradar for the sale of live scoring data. A further agreement followed in 2015.

The panel recognised that any change in the system would financially penalise the ITF, which it said should be compensated for by the other governing authorities.

The report added that there are no simple solutions but called on the sport "to address and limit the betting markets that ultimately drive, and give expression to, the problem and to improve the systems of preventing and disrupting breaches of integrity, and for detecting and sanctioning them when they occur."

Match-Fixing

The report paints a picture of financial privation among many of the sport's 15,000 professionals, with many at the lowest level struggling to cover the costs of competing.

This, the report said, made betting on matches more attractive to players, many of whom admitted knowledge of match-fixing.

A survey of 3,200 players found that 16 percent indicated they had first-hand knowledge of players betting on matches, 11 percent knew of inside information being provided and 14.5 percent of match-fixing. Of these, 35 percent said they had knowledge of more than one instance.

But Lewis said that in many cases the scale of the betting was small, with players seeking the cost of a flight or with relatives, who often double as financial backers, seeking to offset costs.

The three-person panel took statements from 200 key stakeholders, conducted more than 100 interviews and collected more than 3,200 survey responses.

The panel did not look at whether any individual player breached integrity and only players who were subject to the disciplinary process are named in its report.

Tennis' governing bodies have committed to implementing the report's final findings after a period of consultation until the end of June. The final report will be published later this year.

Bangladesh police said on Monday that they would deport five Indians caught betting at a weekend cricket match as authorities crack down on illegal bookmaking in the lucrative domestic league. They were caught by cricket officials concerned about match-fixing and illegal gambling in the hugely popular league. "We have handed them over to police as this is the most we could do. They will take further action," said cricket board spokesman Jalal Yunus. Two of the accused were previously caught betting during Bangladesh`s home series against England in October last year, he added. Authorities were "in the process of deporting them to India", said local police head, Nazrul Islam. Gambling is illegal in Bangladesh but the cricket league has been dogged by betting scandals and its first two editions were marred by a match-fixing controversy involving players and team owners. Last week nearly 80 spectators at two cricket grounds were thrown out on suspicion of betting. The alleged offenders -- including 10 Indians -- used mobile phones to place live bets before scores were broadcast on television and online. A leading newspaper reported last week that betting on domestic cricket was rampant, with tea stalls, restaurants, and rickshaw garages doubling as venues to place bets. The cricket board searches stadiums to catch gamblers but that has not stamped out the practice.Last year the country`s communications regulator blocked a dozen gaming websites in a bid to curb betting on cricket.
