Bengaluru district council member thrashed in broad daylight

I had been worried about the pathos I would find in the piece and so had put off reading it for a few days.

I was familiar with Chidanand Rajghatta's work, having worked with the Times of India. Chidanand is the Times' Washington DC correspondent, and his work is always competent.

Sure enough, when I finally sat down to reading the piece one quiet evening over dinner, it left me watery-eyed.

How could it not have?

A woman had been shot at the doorstep of her home in cold blood by people who can only be described as cowardly (terrorists?), and her ex-husband was writing about her.

But it also left me appalled, and not because of anything that Chidanand had written.

Gauri and Chidanand had met in school, had courted for five years, and then been married for another five before going their separate ways.

They remained friends, with each other and their in-laws.

Chidanand says they reached out to hold hands before the judge hearing their divorce petition and their lawyers hissed that they should disengage should they wish to disengage.

After their divorce, they went to lunch.

In his piece, I thought Chidanand hit a high – which reminded me of Naipaul – and a low.

In his first book on India, An Area of Darkness, Naipaul describes his friendship with a Sardarji he meets in south India.

Like the average north Indian, the Sardarji salivates over his “Aryan” heritage, looks down upon what he sees as the darker south Indians – “monkeys” he calls them – thinks they stare at him, and finally commits an act of violence against what he thinks is a south Indian man gawking at him.

Lying on his back, the “south Indian” man tells the Sardarji that he is just like him – a north Indian.

I had had to double back to the passage – the incident is recounted with such a deft touch – asking myself: “Did the Sardarji really slap that man?”

There is a similar exchange over cigarette smoking in Chidanand's piece.

Gauri is visiting him in Washington and wishes to smoke.

Chidanand insists that she go outside to do so, that she not smoke inside the house.

Gauri tells him it's cold outside, and that she started smoking because of him.

Tough luck, he says.

You're becoming too American, she says.

It's got nothing to do with being American, he says. It's about being healthy.

“Bollocks,” she says. “I'll outlive you.”

“Liar”, Chidanand writes in his piece.

And leaves it at that.

He hits his low when he refers to the maid that Gauri had sent his way as her “gift to us”, writing that she is still with him. (It is incorrect to refer to a human being as a gift, even in India where we often treat our domestic help as if they might be.)

But all of this seemed to elude most of Chidanand's readers.

After having read his piece, I looked at the comments.

The “top comment” said, “Press ti tutes and award wapsi brigades are big time bstds.”

A second said, “Gouri khan was a chain smoker and a drunkard woman.”

A third said “The writer is a bad journalist at worst.”

A fourth educated Chidanand on how one could smoke inside a house in the US – “smoke at the chimney... smoke into the exhaust fan in the kitchen... smoke in the bathroom”.

A fifth said, “whosoever has eliminated the ultra leftist has done a splendid job. you live and prosper on this land.”

And it went on and on and on... (Perhaps I am being too unfair. There were also a few sensible, sensitive comments but they were far outnumbered by the other kind).

How did we become a people like this – full of sound and fury signifying nothing?

That the anonymity afforded by the internet reins in the better angels of our nature. How could it not have? A woman had been shot at the doorstep of her home in cold blood by people who can only be described as cowardly (terrorists?), and her ex-husband was writing about her.
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru will be the country's first airport to have complete Aadhaar-enabled entry and biometric boarding system.

After a two-month-long pilot project in February, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has given its go-ahead to the plan.

According to the Request For Proposal (RFP) issued by BIAL, the airport is expected to become completely Aadhaar-enabled by December 2018, and the initiative is in line with its endeavours to become a Smart Airport—a digitized, seamlessly connected and intuitive one.

BIAL in its proposal lays down the benefits of using Aadhaar-enabled entry and biometric e-boarding process to confirm personal identity for airport passenger processing and access control among other things. The process would enable a passenger to be verified in under five seconds at every checkpoint right up to the boarding gate, completing the screening process in 10 minutes compared to the average 25 minutes. This would help more passengers enter through the same gate.

As reported by TOI, a spokesperson of BIAL said, "With real-time authentication of passengers, entry using biometric readers can enhance security, speed up clearance and alleviate delays at the airport. In addition to eliminating the need for passengers to present their ID and boarding pass at multiple stages of the airport journey, passengers can expect passage through various touch-points to be smooth and stress-free."

According to BIAL executive director and president, Hari Marar, the new move will speed up the validation process and provide a significant increase in security.

He said, "The use of biometrics will soon be the only verification required at each passenger touch-point and will go a long way in improving the flow of passengers, providing a better travel experience as well as greater operational visibility for stakeholders."

He added, "A key driver to creating an airport-of-the-future is to embrace technologies that simplify, streamline and enhance travel processes. And as we continue to see exponential growth in passenger traffic, there's an urgency to implement systems that allow quicker transit time, ensuring the smooth ingress and egress of passengers."

The RFP was issued on October 3 wherein BIAL has set a 325-day deadline to implement the new system.

The project is expected to go live by March 30, 2018 with a working functionality of airport entry. It will take another 90 days under phase-2 for all domestic airlines to be roped in.

By October 4, 2018, even those boarding international airline flights will be able to access the new system and by December 31, 2018, the project will be complete, according to the RFP.

Kempegowda International Airport aims to become a 'Smart Airport' with this initiative

The landlord of the house claims that Swati was calm, composed and a caring mother. Swati is currently in custody of the Puttenahalli police.

As a child of 3 years of age, I discovered another form of mobility when I was provided with a worn out tricycle. Stepping out of the gates of our rented home, I cycled what seemed like less than half a kilometre trying to reach a friend’s home. My parents were, of course, oblivious to my adventure. My route involved the main road and a side road. Before I could go any further, the shopkeeper at the local “buy and save” promptly stopped my adventure midway, reported me to my mother and had me shipped back home to mildly annoyed and mostly relieved parents.
Bangalore of the yesteryears was not a commercial hub and certainly not the central place of power or money like perhaps Delhi or Mumbai. Bangalore was a relatively small city, full of greenery and just about the right place to raise your children. Bangalore as Bengaluru is now a stark contrast to its past. Today it enjoys a status as the hub of India’s Information Technology industry. As a lawyer, I find the city the best place to practice law in the State of Karnataka. However, while I certainly see the perks of the city’s development, I often wonder what the cost is and whether this cost is worth it.

Today’s Bengaluru, which is identified with its frothing lakes, has certainly paid a price for its development. Linguistic divide and xenophobia is suddenly an emerging theme in public debates and conversations. But what angers me the most is the poverty of vision that killed the city’s functional ecosystems. Bengaluru derives its name from Bendakaluru, whose translated meaning represents the city being located originally in a semi-arid region. Thanks to Bengaluru’s founder Kempegowda, the city was the beneficiary of environmental engineering of the best kind. The evidence of it was the provision made for numerous tanks and lakes that kept our groundwater sources alive and well fed, which ultimately resulted in the title of “Garden City”.

However, a grossly inefficient administration, spanning across successive governments, had let real estate and construction activities flout environmental regulations, leading to the destruction of Kempegowda’s planned city. Thus, for the very first time not only is the city heavily dependant on the River Cauvery for its water, but acute water shortage is making life in the city unbearable. Another side effect of the economic boom, which escaped the city administration’s foresight by a huge margin, was the corresponding rise in population and therefore traffic.

After a cancellation in Bengaluru and a rescheduling in Mumbai, now reports suggest that the concert in Delhi featuring French DJ David Guetta may be cancelled.

According to News18.com on Saturday, Delhi police will explain the reasons behind the cancellation of the concert — scheduled for Sunday, January 15 — to the festival organisers.

ANI reported that the cancellation was due to lack of requisite clearance because of which the Delhi police rejected permission for the Sunburn Festival in the capital city.

The News18 report also said that the lack of security personnel was because of the Republic Day parade preparations. Intelligence agencies have reportedly instructed the Delhi police to not let big congregations take place before January 26.

In a tweet posted on Friday, Sunburn Festival had said that the Grammy-winning star would perform in Mumbai and Delhi on the same day.

The star DJ's Mumbai show is to be held on Sunday afternoon, while his event in the Indian capital was scheduled for the same evening

#Alert - Tag your friends & let them know! pic.twitter.com/uUbMDvfJc5 — Sunburn Festival (@SunburnFestival) January 13, 2017 × His Mumbai show is to be held on Sunday afternoon, while his event in the capital was scheduled for the same evening. India: Two more incidents of molestation reported in Bengaluru

After Karnataka home minister's remarks about women following the molestation of several women in Bengaluru, which critics called regressive, another Indian politician named Abu Azmi has made comments of a similar nature.

It is a black blot on our culture. Western culture is increasing and a stop should be put to this. Bengaluru molestation: Another Indian politician blames Western culture, women

Oracle employees were at work on Monday when protesters entered their nine-storey building in India's technology hub, Bengaluru, and asked them to leave in support of demonstrations that had erupted across the city over a water dispute.

By early afternoon, one of the US software giant's biggest overseas offices had been evacuated, two employees there told Reuters, as had the Bengaluru premises of dozens of multinationals and Indian firms that stayed shut on Tuesday to ensure staff safety.

A spokeswoman for Oracle in India said no one was available to comment on the incident.

Two days of violence, in which protesters torched buses and clashed with riot police after a court ordered Karnataka state to share water from a river with another region, have exposed the growing pains of the dynamic technology hub's chaotic boom.

"They come and live here, which means our resources are being used by them. Tomorrow, if there is no water in the city, will they have an office here?" said 30-year-old local activist Keerthi Shankaraghatta, who led a group that staged peaceful calls to shut down several offices during the protests.

Videos posted on his Facebook page show employees from companies including Accenture and ICICI Bank being escorted out of their offices.
ICICI declined to comment. Accenture did not respond to a request for comment.

Bengaluru businesses have faced four days of disruption this month after the water protests and an unrelated strike, hitting operations in a city that accounts for a significant chunk of India's $97 billion in information technology exports.

The head of Indian drugmaker Biocon jokingly referred to Bengaluru as "Bandhaluru", using the Hindi word "Bandh" for closed.

Employees of two large Indian companies told Reuters their buses were stopped and rocked by protesters, who asked them to join the demonstrations.

Cars and trucks registered in Tamil Nadu were smashed and set on fire. A 22-year-old IT worker, who declined to be identified, said she saw a police van in flames.

"For the first time, I felt unsafe in a city I love so much," said Prejin Joe, who runs a tech startup in Bengaluru and is originally from Kerala.

"Never give up"
Despite such experiences, and images of burning buses and trucks broadcast by Indian TV news channels, employers said the spasm of violence, in which two people were killed, had done no major damage to the appeal of the southern city.

Several big employers contacted by Reuters said the violence had not changed their view of the city as an attractive place to be based. None was prepared to be quoted.

Yet major infrastructure problems like congestion and poor water management, if not adequately addressed, may over time blunt Bengaluru's edge over other dynamic commercial centres in India and beyond.

From a sleepy retirement centre known as "Garden City" in the 1990s, Bengaluru, or Bangalore, has grown to become a sprawling metropolis of 10 million that is home to major offices of firms such as Amazon.com , Dell and local giant Wipro .

To some, Bengaluru's rise mirrors India's economic progress over the past two decades, with business parks staffed with thousands of young, English-speaking graduates lured by the city's cosmopolitan feel and well-paid office jobs.

But the growth has come at a cost. Streets are gridlocked, property prices have jumped and lakes and open spaces concreted over. Many locals like Shankaraghatta are angry at the pressure new inhabitants put on resources.

"Bangalore definitely has its challenges in terms of traffic, water and infrastructure. The government has got a lot to do in terms of urban planning, but this city has a never-give-up attitude," said Ryan Fernando, head of a Bengaluru-based chain of nutrition clinics.

400 million more city dwellers

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has grand designs to build 100 futuristic 'smart' cities that promise a hygienic, networked life for residents, but India's existing urban spaces lack efficient public transport and sanitation.

In Chennai, poor urban planning and rampant "encroachment" by property developers were blamed for exacerbating deadly floods last December.

With India's cities forecast to absorb 400 million more people within a generation, experts worry the hassles of doing business could eventually outweigh the cost advantages that brought so many companies to Bengaluru.

Cities like Hyderabad, are rushing to offer tax incentives and tout newer infrastructure to lure big employers away from crowded Bengaluru. Facebook , Uber [UBER.UL] and Google have large offices in Hyderabad.

But for now the advantages Bengaluru enjoys, with its unrivalled pool of skilled software engineers and swanky business parks, make it the city of choice for most large firms.

Companies leased out top grade office space of more than 7 million square feet in Bengaluru in the first nine months of 2015, double 2013 levels and more than any other Indian city, according to property consultancy Cushman and Wakefield data.

Hyderabad also leased out double the amount of prime commercial space in 2015 from two years earlier, but at the lower level of over 2 million square feet, the data showed.

"What has happened has been blown out of proportion. Bengaluru's mojo has not gone," said Shailesh Pathak, executive director at Bhartiya Group, which runs an integrated residential, business and commercial township in Bengaluru.

"People will certainly diversify to Hyderabad, Chennai, the Delhi National Capital Region and Pune - as they are already doing. But Bengaluru remains head and shoulders above all other megacities."
The government has got a lot to do in terms of urban planning, but this city has a never-give-up attitude," said Ryan Fernando, head of a Bengaluru-based chain of nutrition clinics. 400 million more city dwellers Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has grand designs to build 100 futuristic 'smart' cities that promise a hygienic, networked life for residents, but India's existing urban spaces lack efficient public transport and sanitation. But Bengaluru remains head and shoulders above all other megacities." Water protests in Bengaluru expose urban India's growing pains

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in India's southern city of Bengaluru after violence broke out over the Cauvery water-sharing dispute.

Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara said section 144 -- outlawing the assembly of more than 10 people -- had been imposed in Bengaluru city, Pandavapura town and four dam sites, The Hindu reports.

The southern Indian states of Karnataka -- of which Bengaluru is the capital -- and Tamil Nadu have been embroiled in a decades-long battle over the sharing of the waters of the Cauvery river.

At least 30 Tamil Nadu-registered vehicles were attacked in Karnataka, with stones pelted at them. Some vehicles were also set on fire.

The violence erupted hours after India's top court ordered Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, modifying an earlier directive that the state release 15,000 cusecs by September 16.

Around 200 people involved in the protests have been detained, the Indian Express quoted the Karnataka home minister as saying.

Some 15,000 policemen have been deployed in Bengaluru in the wake of the violence.

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah has also called for an emergency meeting to discuss ways to allay tensions in the state.

He also wrote a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart, informing her that he is "firmly committed to maintaining law and order in the state".

And he chastised the protesters. "For both states to live in peace, such incidents should not occur," he said.

Earlier today in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, a few men attacked a hotel owned by a man from Karnataka.

The dispute, which dates back to the 20th century, stems from Karnataka's refusal to share Cauvery river waters with Tamil Nadu. Karnataka insists the water-sharing agreement is skewed heavily in favour of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, says it has 3,000,000 acres of land that are dependent on the release of Cauvery waters.
A mass strike shut down India's technology capital Bengaluru on Friday, with hundreds of companies forced to remain closed and public transport services cancelled as thousands took to the streets over water shortages.

Schools, shops and some government offices also remained closed and there were few private cars on the usually clogged roads in the sprawling capital of southern Karnataka state, which has seen days of street protests.

The strike was called to protest against a Supreme Court order that Karnataka release thousands of gallons of water from its reservoirs into rivers that supply the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, which has been suffering from a severe shortage.

"The day-long, state-wide shutdown is in protest against the Supreme Court order and to express resentment over the state government releasing the water when we don't have it for drinking and irrigation," said Vatal Nagaraj, president of a local federation of civil society groups.

Around 5,000 protesters took to the streets of Bengaluru, some burning tyres and effigies of Tamil Nadu's chief minister Jayalalitha Jayaram.

Technology outsourcing giants Infosys and Wipro said they had told staff to take the day off and make up the time at the weekend.

The shutdown also left hundreds of rail and air passengers stranded at the city's railway station and airport, with no buses or taxis to take them.

India suffers severe water shortages that cause frequent tensions between states.

Earlier this year the government was forced to deploy troops to secure a canal supplying water to New Delhi after it was sabotaged by protesters in neighbouring Haryana state, causing days of shortages in the capital.

"We will give our blood but not Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu," said Bengaluru protester Pravin Shetty, referring to the river that flows through both states.
