<p>But as she readies to drop her first studio album in a decade, Lopez is performing a kind of fictionalized mea culpa about her past romantic relationships in <em>This is Me…Now: A Love Story</em>, hitting Prime Video Friday in tandem with the album’s release. Live Nation also announced Thursday that Lopez will embark on a 30-plus city tour beginning June 26 in Orlando, Florida.</p>

<p>The 65-minute musical film, which she self-financed, follows a hopeless romantic in search of love (Lopez) and the myriad ways she contends with repeated heartbreak, including visits to her therapist (played by Fat Joe) and sobbing through old romantic films. From a distance, a star-studded Zodiac council, played by Jane Fonda, Post Malone, Keke Palmer, Sofia Vergara and others, provide a sympathetic but mercilessly faultfinding commentary on her desperation for love, failed marriages (Lopez is on her fourth) — and rebounding relationships.</p>

<p>At 54, Lopez said her ninth studio album and its accompanying film were the result of a sudden burst of inspiration, a large part of which she attributes to her rekindled romance with and marriage to Ben Affleck.</p>

<p>AP: It’s been a decade since your last album. Does making music feel like riding a bike for you or do you have to get back into gear again?</p>

<p>LOPEZ: You know, it’s a scary thing whenever you start something new again. Even when I start a movie and I haven’t done a movie in a few months or a year or whatever. But this was really different because I hadn’t been inspired to really go into the studio and write a whole album for years. I did “Marry Me” a few years ago for the movie, but that was not a Jennifer Lopez album, not a J.Lo album. I just hadn’t been inspired at all.</p>

<p>So, to actually get inspiration was the kind of gift, the exciting thing, and wanting to go in there. And yes, I was nervous at first, but I went in there on the first day and I said, “This is the mission.” We made ‘This is me…Then’ 20 years ago, and we’re going to make ‘This Is Me…Now.’ This miracle has happened, a second chance. And I’d love to capture this moment in time the way that album captured that moment in time.</p>

<p>AP: You talked about people not understanding the vision for the film initially and having to really stand your ground.</p>

<p>LOPEZ: Nobody wanted to make the project. There doesn’t seem to be a big appetite for musical projects from the powers that be these days, which is sad because I remember growing up and loving to see these music projects from my favorite artists, but they just don’t see it that way. I knew that it was going to be a big risk, but something was driving me to really get it done. I knew it was hard because it hadn’t been done before so it was hard to describe to people. When you see it, you’re like, “Oh yeah, I’ve never seen anything like this before” — I said, “When they see it, they’re going to get it.” And that’s what happened, thank God. It could have really turned out badly. And by the way, every day that’s how I felt, that this could really turn out badly. But I still stayed the course like the captain of the ship in the middle of the storm. It’s like “We really could die right now, but we’re going to keep going.”</p>

<p>AP: The star-studded Zodiac council is hysterical. Them observing your life and having that kind of commentary felt very meta of you being in the public eye for so long.</p>

<p>LOPEZ: Yeah. You described it perfectly. It was a commentary on that. But it was also like everybody has that in their life, right? So, it’s like kind of the Greek chorus of your own life. You know, you have your friends, your family, your siblings, your co-workers, everybody commenting like, “Oh, she’s dating this person. Did you hear she broke up with that guy?” They’re always like telling you. “Why are you with this guy?” And they’re rooting for you. It’s not that they’re not rooting for you. And for me, it’s like the media and the world sometimes that are commenting. But I think it was a really kind of humorous way to do it but also be able to get those pieces of information in there, you know?</p>

<p>AP: Do you feel like, because your relationships have been so public, that you’ve been harder on yourself about them?</p>

<p>LOPEZ: Oh yeah. 100%. It’s made me doubt myself and really feel bad about myself at times. Made me feel like I wanted to quit at times. But at the end of the day, I feel like you kind of have to do this thing where you learn how to navigate it. You take the things that could be constructive about that and use it, and the rest you kind of just throw away as kind of like haterations or, you know, other things like that and just be like, “Whatever. I know who I am, I know what I want to do.” You know? And little by little, you know, as you get older and you get more mature and you have more experience, you start realizing more what’s real and what’s like just other people’s thoughts out here, right? And you get more confident in who you are, which is nice.</p>

<p>AP: The film is a journey of self-love. But you shared that this album was heavily inspired by rekindling your relationship with Ben. How do those two things relate to each other?</p>

<p>LOPEZ: Well, I think what people would kind of assume is that this (movie) is a story about that. But the truth is, the story is not about that. Really, the story is about your journey as a person, it’s about one person’s journey and what it takes to get from heartbreak back to love. Or a hopeless romantic’s journey in their search for love. I don’t like to talk too much about like, “Here’s what you’ll get from it.” I want everybody to get whatever they get from it. But at the end of the day, what I hope is that they’re entertained and that it gives them hope.</p>

<p>AP: Is that why it was worth it to be so vulnerable?</p>

<p>LOPEZ: I think as an artist, if you can’t be honest and vulnerable, then you’re really not doing your job right. It requires that. And not just in music, but in acting and in expressing yourself. You have to kind of bare a part of your soul. That’s part of it. And that’s not easy for people. For us humans, it’s not easy. But as an artist, you have to kind of overcome that fear and go, “You know what? I think what I want to say and what I want to express here is something that’s worthy to be expressed.”</p>

<p>LOPEZ: It wasn’t about like, “Here’s the right time to do this.” It was just, this is how it happened. The instinct and the creative impulse just hit me. I was just very inspired to do this. And it would have been very easy to be kind of, you know, give it all up and go, “Okay, let’s not do this. It’s fine. Feeling overwhelmed! Jennifer Lopez pens a heartwarming anniversary post for husband Ben Affleck

<p>Age is just a number for Jennifer Lopez. The singer-actress celebrated another year around the sun with her near and dear ones including her husband, actor-filmmaker Ben Affleck. On Monday, JLo, who turned 54 on 24 July, shared new photos from her birthday celebrations in her On the JLo newsletter.&nbsp;<br />

“Thank you all for the birthday love. Here’s a lil peek into my party,” Lopez wrote. “Ben hosted it at our new house with our closest family and friends. All the kids were there, it was a gorgeous day full of sunshine and perfect for a pool party!!”<br />

“I felt so appreciated and acknowledged by my loved ones, and I'm extremely grateful to be where I am today at this point in my life’s journey with so many beautiful, caring people to share it all with,” she continued. “Wishing you all the same love and happiness on your birthday and always!!!”<br />

Inspired by the <em>Flashpoint </em>storyline from comics, the film brings back Michael Keaton as Batman and even features a cameo from Ben Affleck's Batman — since there can be multiple versions of the same character.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the film, Barry is still not over the death of his mother Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú), who was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant when he was still a child. Barry's father Henry Allen (Ron Livingston) was wrongfully convicted of his wife's murder. So the tragedy effectively ruined three lives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I absolutely loved<em> The Flash</em>. It might be my favourite DC movie since 2017's <em>Wonder Woman</em>. There are a couple of missteps and I was mildly annoyed by the overuse of CGI and fan service overload particularly in the third act, but the film managed to rise above these issues. Even much of the fan service and cameos, except for one egregious instance, I grudgingly admit I cheered at the top of my voice. If you believed the trailers for the film were spoiler-y, you are in for multiple surprises. Most of these moments are just for laughs (and cheers) and are not meant to have any major ramification in terms of the future of DCU.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Christina Hodson's script struck a nice balance of the dark and light tones, I thought. and was able to incorporate moments of intensity and gravity without losing the overall sense of fun and adventure. One aspect that stood out to me was the film's unwavering heart and humour. Miller was, and I cannot stress this enough, brilliant as the two quite distinct versions of the speedster superhero, and nicely evoked that contrast between a veteran Flash and a kid learning to deal with his new superpowers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The relationship between Barry and his mother was at the core of this movie and it added a poignant and emotional depth to Barry's arc. The film is above all about loss and the yearning for that elusive connection, and finally coming to terms with it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Keaton was, well, Keaton. Which is to say, very watchable. His Batman is not my favourite live-action avatar of the superhero, but it comes close. (Those on social media questioning how a 70-year-old man without any superpower can be this lithe and athletic are missing the point of these movies.)</p>

<p>The action is great and in kicking butt, every single superhero gets spotlight, though I once again reiterate CGI is dodgy at times and I mean distractingly dodgy.&nbsp;</p>

They [Miller uses the plural pronoun] might be the face of this film but a film of this magnitude is a product of collective efforts of thousands of people. <p>DC's much-anticipated <em>The Flash</em> will release next month. While the excitement is quite considerable about the project, a shadow also looms over it, thanks to the lead star Ezra Miller. But director Andy Muschietti has said that he doesn't think anybody else can play that character as well. In the teaser for the upcoming episode of <em>The Discourse</em> podcast, he said, "I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys — it feels like a character that was made for them.” Miller indeed essays two versions of Barry, one in the main continuity and one in a parallel reality.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong><em>The Flash</em> and its numerous troubles</strong></h2>

<p><em>The Flash</em>, a $200 million project, has been in trouble ever since it went into production. Mind you, this is apart from the troubles over conflicts between the studio and the writers and directors. The project has seen the comings and goings of multiple writers and filmmakers over the years before Muschietti, who directed the It movies for Warners, joined the project.</p>

<p>But the real cause of distress has been Miller. They had numerous run-ins with the law in the last couple of years [Miller uses they pronoun]. Even the lockdown induced by COVID-19 did not deter them as they were involved in a spate of incidents around the globe and many of which were violent in nature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some people told <em>Vanity Fair </em>as saying that Miller claimed to be Jesus, the Devil, and the next Messiah, among other things. Naturally, the Warners Bros execs were apprehensive of the bad press the film and by extension, the studio was getting. It was even contemplated to recast them or scrap the project altogether, much like what happened with <em>Batgirl</em>.</p>

But director Andy Muschietti has said that he doesn't think anybody else can play that character as well. In the teaser for the upcoming episode of The Discourse podcast, he said, "I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys — it feels like a character that was made for them.” Miller indeed essays two versions of Barry, one in the main continuity and one in a parallel reality. Andy's sister and co-producer Barbara Muschietti said, “In principal photography, Ezra was brilliant and the most committed and the most professional [actor]. Ezra gave everything for this role — physically, creatively, emotionally. They were absolutely supreme.” The Flash and its numerous troubles The Flash, a $200 million project, has been in trouble ever since it went into production. Mind you, this is apart from the troubles over conflicts between the studio and the writers and directors. The project has seen the comings and goings of multiple writers and filmmakers over the years before Muschietti, who directed the It movies for Warners, joined the project. But the real cause of distress has been Miller. They had numerous run-ins with the law in the last couple of years [Miller uses they pronoun]. Even the lockdown induced by COVID-19 did not deter them as they were involved in a spate of incidents around the globe and many of which were violent in nature. Some people told Vanity Fair as saying that Miller claimed to be Jesus, the Devil, and the next Messiah, among other things. Naturally, the Warners Bros execs were apprehensive of the bad press the film and by extension, the studio was getting. It was even contemplated to recast them or scrap the project altogether, much like what happened with Batgirl. What The Flash is all about? This Andy Muschietti directorial will not only rip open the multiverse for the DCU (DC Universe) but also serves as a soft-reset button to usher in a new phase of the cinematic universe, which will not feature, for instance, Henry Cavill's Superman. Cavill was revealed to be returning to DCU in the post-credit scene of Black Adam, but later, when Gunn assumed command it was said that he will not be coming back after all. The Flash marks the comeback of Michael Keaton in the role of Batman. Since the film is all about the multiverse, there can be multiple versions of the same character. For while the film is an undeniable celebration of Nike and Air Jordans and many might see it as a feature-length advertisement &nbsp;— which understandably might put many of you off — it is a superbly-made film featuring exceptional performances by a cast of highly talented actors.</p>

Nike, then a comparatively minor player, is lagging behind and as a result, the entire segment is on the verge of being shut down. A resourceful talent scout Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) is tasked by CEO Phil Knight (Ben Affleck) to make deals with basketball stars — seeing as how the sport was growing in popularity — to bump up sales and save the floundering division.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead of recruiting three players to sell the shoes, which Knight wants and expects to maximise profit, Vaccaro is more of an out-of-the-box thinker. His hawk-like gaze is fixated upon a young Michael Jordan, a rising star who would go on to etch his name in the annals of greatness as the pinnacle of his game. In short, Vaccaro wants his boss to allot the entire budget to this player. This is a huge gamble, as while Jordan is clearly talented as Vaccaro realises after watching recordings, he is also totally untested on the professional stage. As we now know from the benefit of hindsight, this gamble paid off handsomely, catapulting Air Jordans to unprecedented heights and forever changing the landscape of athletic footwear.</p>

<p>But I digress. Jordan, however, did have too much love for Nike, preferring the more trendy and cool company that is Adidas. It is Vaccaro's job to convince Jordan, which at one point involves going behind him and his agent to talk to his parents Deloris Jordan (Viola Davis) and James R Jordan Sr (Julius Tennon). And Air Jordans are born.</p>

<p>For a film centring around a brand that has Jordan in it, Michael Jordan himself is hardly seen throughout the narrative. Actor Damian Delano Young does appear in a couple of crucial scenes as Jordan, but the face is never shown. This creative choice worked for me for Jordan, like any youngster, is bored by business meetings and dealings and it falls upon the shoulders of Deloris to decide.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>Air</em> is a splendid film. As already mentioned above in different words, it is an unapologetic celebration of corporate culture and brands. And yet, it is also a damn fun movie to watch. Populated by a great cast who seemingly are having the time of their lives (it certainly seems that way), it is peppered with fantastic performances and dialogue that flows naturally. The characters, although quite thinly drawn, feel like real people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Damon brings&nbsp;his old charm and determination to the role, reliably portraying Vaccaro's earnestness. Davis, as usual, is splendid in a supporting role. Even Affleck, appearing for only a few scenes, is very watchable. After his sojourn to superhero cinema, he clearly is enjoying his time in these smaller-scale movies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His self-assured direction also deserves praise. The decade is rendered faithfully without too many stylised visuals we have seen in movies sharing the setting of late (I am looking at you, <em>Wonder Woman 1984</em>). Most of the major scenes are set indoors, and the attention to detail there is remarkable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The real star of the movie for me, however, is Convery, whose script was on the Black List (a yearly list of liked but unproduced screenplays) and was eventually picked by the good people at Amazon. His script has everything, be it understated humour, solid dialogue, and a plot that extracts a lot of tension out of a story whose conclusion has been widely known for decades. It takes great skill to create suspense when the outcome is already familiar, but Convery achieves this feat with remarkable finesse.</p>

<p>Whether you're a fan of sports dramas or simply enjoy a well-crafted film, do not miss <em>Air</em>.</p>
