China has criticised India for reportedly deploying more than 10,000 additional troops to its border with Tibet, saying the move was “not conducive to easing tensions”.

Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, said, “China is committed to working with India to safeguard the peace and stability of the border areas. We believe that India’s practice is not conducive to safeguarding peace and is not conducive to easing tensions.”

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that India has deployed the troops, previously stationed at its Western border with Pakistan, to strengthen its position along the disputed border.

“India’s increase in military deployments in border areas does not help to calm the situation in the border areas or to safeguard peace and safety in these areas,” the Chinese spokesperson warned.

<h2>‘India prepared for war’</h2>

The latest development comes days after India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared that the country was ready ‘for war’ and that it was prepared to deal with multiple challenges.

“We have never occupied anyone’s land but, if anyone attacks us, we are in a position to give a befitting reply,” the minister had said during an interview with a TV channel.

‘Will not ease tensions': China fumes as India deploys more troops on Tibet border

China-Taiwan tensions continue to mount China isn't hiding its intentions it claims to self-rule Taiwan as its territory. This time the Chinese Premier has even adopted a harder stance against Taiwan. Our next report gets you the complete story.

China's strong push for Taiwan reunification, PLA spokesperson makes strong remarks

China will increase its defence spending by 7.2 per cent in 2024 as Beijing adopts a tougher language against Taiwan. According to official reports, this year's military budget has increased almost twice under Xi Jinping's more than a decade in office.

China will increase its defence spending by 7.2 per cent in 2024 as Beijing adopts a tougher language against Taiwan. According to official reports, this year's military budget has increased almost twice under Xi Jinping's more than a decade in office. The increase matches last year's rate and exceeds the government's growth forecast. As China released the budget figures, it has also hardened its stance against Taiwan, reported Reuters. Moreover, the government work delivered by Premier Li Qiang at the opening of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Tuesday did not mention the "peaceful reunification". In recent years, tensions have risen steadily over Taiwan and elsewhere across East Asia as regional military developments rise in the democratically ruled island that China claims as its own. ALSO READ | Tesla shares plunge over 7 per cent as China sales decline: Report Li Mingjiang, a defence scholar at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore, said that Taiwan is a prominent concern for Beijing's defence spending despite a suffering Chinese economy. "China is showing that in the coming decade it wants to grow its military to the point where it is prepared to win a war if it has no choice but to fight one," Li said. Xi Jinping became the president and commander-in-chief of China in 2013. Since then, China's defence budget has risen to 1.67 trillion yuan ($230.60 billion) in 2024 from 720 billion yuan in 2013. During his time in office, the increase in military spending has consistently surpassed the annual domestic economic growth target. According to the government work report, the growth target is about five per cent in 2024, the same as last year's goal. According to the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), China has raised its defence spending for the 30th year straight. In a research published in February 2024, the IISS said that new military equipment purchases might be the most prominent portion of the military budget. However, despite the defence budget outpacing the GDP growth, the defence spending has stayed at about 1.3 per cent of the overall GDP in the last decade, said James Char, a security scholar at the RSIS. "Of course, the country's longer-term economic fortunes will determine whether this can be sustained going forward," he added. China has restated the call for "reunification" with Taiwan in the government work report. It dropped the descriptor "peaceful," used in previous reports, highlighting that it wants to "be firm" in doing so. (With inputs from agencies)

China's growth ambitions challenged: Analysts sceptical of 'Target Without a Plan'

China kicks off 14th annual political meeting in Beijing, thousands of delegates gather

Beijing is ready to host China’s most influential political gatherings next week, known as “two sessions.” On Monday (Mar 4), a special session of China’s rubberstamp parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), is set to begin. Alongside, a meeting of the nation’s top political advisory body will convene, known as the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Every year, the ‘two sessions’ is a keenly watched event. It sets the agenda of the upcoming year in motion, lays the ground for new laws and regulations and presents new, ambitious economic targets.

This time around, the event is attracting even more eyeballs in the face of the disappearance of two key leaders—Qin Gang, the ex-foreign minister and Li Shangfu, the ex-defence minister. The two men were removed last year from the top echelons without any public explanation and their fate remains unclear.

<h2>Who will control Chinese foreign ministry?</h2>

Although former foreign minister Wang Yi was asked to fill in the shoes of Qin Gang, his appointment was considered temporary by experts.

The Guardian reports that Liu Jianchao, a senior party cadre, could become the next foreign minister. He has been travelling a lot of late to diplomatic meetings worldwide.&nbsp;

Dong Jun was appointed as&nbsp;the country’s&nbsp;defence minister in December last year.

According to Neil Thomas and Jing Qian, researchers at the Asia Society Policy Institute, if the two spots remain vacant in the state council, this would reflect “a higher degree of mistrust and paralysis at the centre of Xi’s leadership and a poorer outlook for China’s attempts to both manage tensions with the west and lead the global south”.

China might get new foreign minister as key CCP gatherings set to take place: Report

Amid growing tensions between India and Maldives, a Chinese 'research' ship reportedly entered the waters of the island nation on Thursday (Feb 22), news agency Reuters reported citing global ship-tracking data.

This comes just three months after a similar vessel visited the Indian Ocean and sparked security concerns among the Indian authorities.

The visit by the ship also comes following the remarks by a US think tank that China's navy could "leverage the insights gained from these missions" for the deployment of naval forces, a claim Beijing calls part of a concocted image-smearing "China threat" narrative.

Xiang Yang Hong 03, which is owned by a research institute that reports to China's natural resources ministry, made a port call in Male more than a month after leaving its home port of Xiamen in southeastern China, added the Reuters report citing data from MarineTraffic.

Before its arrival, the civilian ship, for three weeks, had surveyed waters outside the exclusive economic zones of India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka, the ship-tracking data showed.

Reviving the iconic panda diplomacy, China is planning&nbsp;to send a pair of giant pandas to the San Diego Zoo, months after all the iconic bears, taken on loan, were returned from US zoos amid souring relations between the two countries.&nbsp;

Speaking to The Associated Press, San Diego Zoo officials said that if all permits and requirements are approved, two pairs of bears, one male and one female, are likely to arrive in the zoo as early as the end of summer, nearly five years after the last pandas were sent back by the zoo to China.

Speaking about the return of bears, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and vice president of Wildlife Conservation Science Megan Owen said, “We're very excited and hopeful. They've expressed a tremendous amount of enthusiasm to re-initiate panda cooperation starting with the San Diego Zoo.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his US visit in November, had hinted at the return of pandas – calling them “envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples".

The departure of pandas from the United States appeared to be a sign of the significant shift in their complicated relationship where tension seemed to prevail over the adorable bears. The higher-than-expected snowfall prompted officials in the Chinese capital to close some highways as temperatures hovered around freezing point on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Beijing also witnessed slow traffic on the highways while snow-covered pavements proved treacherous for commuters and cyclists.&nbsp;

“I feel like the few days after the snow are a bit inconvenient because the road is kind of slippery and drivers are not that considerate,” Beijing resident Kylie Chen, 23, told Reuters.&nbsp;

Although she liked seeing the snow, it complicated her work commute, as she had to walk on sludgy roads, the 23-year-old added.&nbsp;

Chinese banks have announced a significant reduction in a key reference lending rate for mortgages, marking the most substantial cut on record and signalling intensified support for the struggling property sector. <o:p></o:p>

According to a Bloomberg report, the five-year Loan Prime Rate (LPR), serving as a crucial benchmark for mortgages, was lowered by 25 basis points to 3.95 percent, as disclosed by the People's Bank of China. <o:p></o:p>

This move, the first of its kind in eight months, represents the most substantial adjustment since the inception of the rate in 2019, reflecting efforts to stimulate demand in the housing market. <o:p></o:p>

Amidst the backdrop of the world's second-largest economy grappling with prolonged deflation and the most severe property downturn in history, expectations for intervention to bolster the economy have been escalating. <o:p></o:p>

The recent rate cut comes in the wake of heightened anticipation for additional measures, including adjustments to lending rates, following previous initiatives by the People's Bank of China. <o:p></o:p>

While the central bank opted against reducing a key policy interest rate, it has undertaken alternative measures to infuse liquidity into the banking system, underscoring its cautious approach to monetary easing.<o:p></o:p>

Analysts had anticipated a rate adjustment, although not to the extent witnessed, with predictions ranging from slight decreases to maintain stability in the market. <o:p></o:p>

The magnitude of the rate cut reflects the urgency felt by policymakers to revitalise the housing sector amid prevailing economic headwinds.<o:p></o:p>

The reduction in the LPR is anticipated to have a cascading effect on mortgage lending rates, potentially incentivising prospective homebuyers and providing a much-needed boost to the real estate market. <o:p></o:p>

Lower borrowing costs are expected to stimulate demand for housing, offering relief to developers grappling with sluggish sales and mounting inventories. <o:p></o:p>

Additionally, the move aligns with broader efforts to stimulate consumption and spur economic recovery, positioning the housing sector as a crucial driver of growth.<o:p></o:p>

In a move to curb short-selling, China's securities regulator announced on Tuesday a series of stringent measures, including the suspension of brokerages from borrowing shares for lending and imposing a cap on the size of securities re-lending businesses.<o:p></o:p>

This is based on a Reuters report.<o:p></o:p>

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) is also set to prohibit securities lending to investors who sell stocks on the same day of purchase and has pledged to crack down on illegal arbitrage involving short-selling. <o:p></o:p>

These steps come in the wake of a recent market downturn, prompting Chinese authorities to implement various measures to bolster share prices and restore confidence in the economy.<o:p></o:p>

The CSRC's latest measures aim to address the challenges posed by short-selling, a practice that has raised concerns about market stability. <o:p></o:p>

The regulator emphasised a "zero tolerance" stance against malicious short sellers, warning of severe consequences for those violating the rules. <o:p></o:p>

The CSRC explicitly stated that individuals flouting the law would "lose their shirts and rot in jail."<o:p></o:p>

As part of the regulatory crackdown, the CSRC announced the suspension of new business in securities re-lending, a practice wherein brokerages borrow shares to lend to clients for short selling. <o:p></o:p>

Existing businesses engaged in securities re-lending will be gradually phased out. <o:p></o:p>

Following the regulatory announcement, several mutual fund companies, including China Asset Management Co, E Fund Management Co, and Southern Asset Management, declared the suspension of lending shares and the gradual discontinuation of securities re-lending. <o:p></o:p>

Brokerage firm Huaxi Securities Co also committed to ceasing lending shares for short selling.<o:p></o:p>

To reinforce market integrity, the CSRC urged brokerages to enhance scrutiny over clients' trading behaviours. <o:p></o:p>

This move aims to ensure compliance with existing regulations, particularly those preventing the sale of shares on the same day of purchase. <o:p></o:p>

The regulator noted that some investors have circumvented these rules by using borrowed shares, and consequently, the CSRC will now ban such traders from borrowing shares. <o:p></o:p>

The recent regulatory efforts have already led to a 24 per cent decline in the securities lending business, amounting to 63.7 billion yuan, according to the CSRC. <o:p></o:p>

In addition to curbing short-selling, the CSRC encouraged listed companies to fortify their value through various means, including share buybacks, stock purchases by major shareholders, regular dividend pay-outs, and mergers and acquisitions. <o:p></o:p>

These measures aim to bolster the overall stability and attractiveness of Chinese stocks, fostering investor confidence in the market. <o:p></o:p>

China's manufacturing sector faced its fourth consecutive month of contraction in January, according to an official factory survey released on Wednesday. <o:p></o:p>

The official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) inched up to 49.2 from December's 49.0, indicating ongoing challenges for the world's second-largest economy as it strives to regain momentum in the new year. <o:p></o:p>

The data, in line with a Reuters poll forecast, provides a critical snapshot of China's economic health after a somewhat shaky post-COVID recovery. <o:p></o:p>

Zhiwei Zhang, Chief Economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, remarked, "Economic momentum remained muted as the deflationary pressure persists," predicting a central bank rate cut in the first half of the year to stimulate domestic demand.<o:p></o:p>

Despite a slight rise in output, the manufacturing PMI remains below the 50-mark, signifying a contraction. The figures for new orders and new export orders sub-indices, at 49.0 and 47.2, respectively, further highlight the industry's struggle. <o:p></o:p>

Weak external demand and the impending Lunar New Year, which prompts earlier factory closures, contribute to the challenges. <o:p></o:p>

To address economic headwinds, China's central bank recently announced a surprise cut to banks' reserve requirement ratio. <o:p></o:p>

Julian Evans-Pritchard, Head of China Economics at Capital Economics, remarked on the uncertain nature of the PMI rise, stating, "Either way, it adds to evidence that growth momentum in China is in the midst of a renewed recovery, albeit one that remains on shaky foundations."<o:p></o:p>

In contrast to the manufacturing sector, China's non-manufacturing PMI, which includes services and construction, experienced a modest uptick to 50.7 from December's 50.4. <o:p></o:p>

While the services sub-index returned to growth after two months of contraction, the construction PMI grew at a slower pace. The composite PMI, incorporating both manufacturing and services, reached a four-month high of 50.9 in January. <o:p></o:p>

China's economic path in 2024: Growth achieved, but challenges loom

Taiwan's ruling party candidate Lai Ching-te on Saturday, January 13, won the island's presidential election, a vote watched closely from Beijing to Washington. Lai vowed to defend the self-ruled island from Chinese "intimidation".

China claims 'Taiwan is China's Taiwan' | Taiwan loses first ally post-election

Taiwan advised China to "face reality" after Beijing issued a fresh warning to the self-ruled island stating that any efforts made towards independence would be "harshly punished".

This came a day after Lai Ching-te, the presidential candidate representing Taiwan's ruling party, secured victory in an election that China had characterised as a pivotal choice between "war and peace".&nbsp;

Taipei's foreign ministry on Sunday (Jan 14) told Beijing to respect the election result and give up suppressing Taiwan.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the Beijing authorities to respect the election results, face reality and give up suppressing Taiwan in order for positive cross-strait interactions to return to the right track," it said in a statement.

Beijing which considers Taiwan as its territory and has never stopped using force to impose its will on the island, argued that the election did not alter the fact that Taiwan still&nbsp;remained a part of China.

China's foreign minister Wang Yi warned that steps towards the self-ruled island's independence would lead to harsh punishment.

Lai Ching-te on Saturday (Jan 13) secured victory in Taiwan's elections.

Facing two opponents in the presidential race, Lai contended with Hou from the KMT and Ko Wen-je, former Taipei Mayor representing the Taiwan People's Party, founded in 2019.

The election unfolded against the backdrop of China denouncing Lai as a 'separatist', rejecting calls for talks. Lai, in contrast, has emphasised his commitment to maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait while bolstering the island's defences.

Ahead of the election, China consistently labelled Lai as a dangerous separatist. Taiwan's defence ministry reported the spotting of Chinese balloons crossing the sensitive Taiwan Strait on the election day, further escalating tensions. The ministry classified the balloon activities as psychological warfare and a threat to aviation safety.

In 1995, when&nbsp;Mayawati,&nbsp;the leader of India's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)&nbsp;became Chief Minister of the country's politically significant Uttar Pradesh state for the first time, the corridors of power in New Delhi were left stunned. Given Mayawati's roots as a member of India's historically ostracised Dalit community, then-Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao termed her&nbsp;a 'miracle of democracy'.

Nearly three decades later, the rearranged corridors of power in Taipei City also bore witness to a miracle of democracy.&nbsp;

The elections in Taiwan on January 13 handed the pro-sovereignty Democratic Progressive Party a historic third consecutive presidential victory. Lai Ching-te (63), a Harvard-educated&nbsp;physician, is scheduled to succeed his party colleague and Taiwan's two-term President Tsai Ing-wen in May 2024.

Lai said that he is open to dialogue with China on equal terms and stressed that Beijing also has a responsibility to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.&nbsp;

There is an essential link between Taiwan being a dominant semiconductor producer and the perpetual threat of war it faces from China.

Almost all electronic products – from refrigerators and microwaves to computers and smartphones – run on semiconductors. The national intelligence systems and military missiles all over the world are also essentially dependent on semiconductor chips.&nbsp;

Moreover, there is a global stake in stability in the region.

According to Chris Miller's 'Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology', the entire world economy hinges on peace in Taiwan. &nbsp;

China too is a net importer of semiconductor chips and Taiwan is its primary exporter. Over $47 billion worth of semiconductor chips were imported by China in 2023 alone&nbsp;(The United States&nbsp;is a top semiconductor importer from Taiwan).

A disruption to semiconductor production could have dramatic effects on the world economy, perhaps much more than the Covid pandemic&nbsp;or the Ukraine war, according to Miller.&nbsp;This explains Washington's increased focus on Chinese activities in the Taiwan Strait and frequent assertiveness over the maintenance of the status quo between Taipei and Beijing.&nbsp;

While China's claim over Taiwan predates the semiconductor boom by a few decades, analysts argue that China's reliance on chips manufactured in Taiwan is so huge that it makes a full-blown&nbsp;attack on the self-ruled island less likely.&nbsp;

Whoever is in charge of Taiwan's state of affairs in Taipei City effectively helms over the 'new oil' of the technology age that semiconductors are now known as.&nbsp;

Following the results of the January 13 elections, the Democratic Progressive Party's Lai Ching-te will lead Taiwan, the self-ruled island critical to the global economy due to its dominance in chip production. The persistent threat of war from China, despite Beijing's unavoidable&nbsp;stake in peace,&nbsp;is likely to complicate Lai's presidential years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Taiwan's Lai Ching-te: The&nbsp;president-elect&nbsp;who rose from ashes</h2>

When Lai was two, his father reportedly died in an accident. Lai, along with his five siblings, was raised by his mother. A little later,&nbsp;a passing typhoon blew the roof of his home in the small hamlet of Wanli in Taiwan's far north.

Instead of toys, Lai quite literally had trees to climb. He did not have privilege, and like all underdogs, he had to prove himself.

"One of the biggest assets my father left me was being impoverished," Lai, former mayor of Taiwan's southern city of Tainan, was quoted as saying by TIME magazine in October 2023.

"Because in this environment, I worked harder, more vigorously on everything I did. It gave me a sense of determination."

Branded a "troublemaker" by Beijing for his pro-sovereignty views, Lai said in October 2023 that he is prepared to "welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping to Taiwan and prepare Taiwanese delicacies for him to try."

There is something pertinent about democracies worldwide electing an underdog at different points in time in history: For instance,&nbsp;former US President Harry S Truman, son of a livestock dealer;&nbsp;Britain's former Prime Minister&nbsp;Margaret Thatcher, daughter of a grocery shop owner; India's Narendra Modi, son of a tea seller. All three have been hugely consequential not just for their respective countries but also for the rest of the world.

Over the weekend, Taiwan added Lai Ching-te to the list of self-made leaders — and thus a miracle of democracy — who turned the course of their lives to end up at the top of the leadership ladder.

While Lai credits his work ethic as having&nbsp;changed the course of his life, whether or not he will change of course of affairs vis-a-vis Taipei-Beijing ties, will be closely watched across the world during his presidential years.

The Chinese government on Friday (Dec 29) appointed Dong Jun, 62, as the new defence minister of the country, replacing Li Shangfu – the minister who disappeared four months ago without any explanation. The National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee during its session that ended on Friday announced the decision. But who is Dong Jun, and what are his credentials? What do we know about Dong Jun so far General Dong Jun is the former commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. He was previously the deputy commander of the Southern Military Command as well. That particular command is responsible for handling the South China Sea region. Notably, Beijing claims as its own almost all of the South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade passes annually, and has ignored a 2016 international court ruling that says its assertion has no legal basis. Dong's authority in managing the region may have been one of the primary reasons why Beijing took the decision appoint a defence minister from a navy background for the first time. Additionally, Dong does not sit on the national Central Military Commission which suggests that President Xi Jinping has handpicked him over the other sitting members. Watch | China President Xi Jinping says, 'Will prevent anyone from splitting Taiwan from China' × According to reports, General Liu Zhenli, chief of the commission’s joint staff department, was widely expected to become the next defence chief, but Dong has been given the promotion ahead of him. Liu last week spoke with his American counterpart during the first high-level call between military personnel from the two leading world powers in more than a year. Despite Liu's high stature, it looks like he was shunned by Xi. Apart from the Southern Military Command, Dong has also served as the deputy commander of the Eastern Military Command’s navy force – which deals with the East China Sea including Taiwan. Also read | China appoints Dong Jun as new defence minister: State media What does his appointment mean? Although a Chinese defence minister is a mere pawn of the Politburo and decisions are taken by Xi, Dong's appointment comes at a crucial juncture when Beijing attempts to push its Taiwan reunification plans.
