Sullivan, the first US National Security Adviser to visit China since 2016, met Xi as he wrapped up three days of talks in Beijing, which also saw him sit down with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other high-ranking officials.

At a meeting with Xi in Beijing's ornate Great Hall of the People, he said President Biden "looks forward to engaging with you again in the coming weeks".

"President Biden is committed to responsibly managing this consequential relationship to ensure that competition does not veer into conflict or confrontation, and to work together where our interests align," he said.

Chinese state media said Xi told Sullivan that in spite of "great changes", China and the US could still enjoy good ties.

"China's commitment to the goal of stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations hasn't changed," Xi said.

"We hope that the US will work with China to meet each other halfway," he added, according to CCTV.

On Wednesday, Sullivan and top diplomat Wang discussed plans for their leaders to talk in the coming weeks.

They also clashed over China's increasingly assertive approach in disputed maritime regions.

On a rainy morning this month, a modelling instructor led a line of immaculately coiffed older women as they sashayed around the classroom in traditional cheongsam dresses and pink oil-paper parasols.

In another class, students sat in a semicircle beating African drums in time to soaring socialist songs.

He Ying, 63, said joining the centre had helped her overcome a post-retirement lack of confidence and meet new friends.

"I used to feel that my cultural life...was very impoverished, that there wasn't much meaning in going on living," she told AFP.

"(People here) are not just waiting to grow old."

Nearly 15,000 kindergartens closed in China last year as enrollments plunged by 5.3 million compared to 2022, according to government data.

Chinese companies transport cooking oil in toxic fuel trucks? Major scandal sparks investigation

Taiwan Navy on Wednesday (Jul 3) will welcome two more Tuo Jiang-class stealth missile corvettes to boost its deterrence capabilities. Dubbed as 'carrier killers,' An Jiang and Wan Jiang will help enhance Taiwan's asymmetric warfare capabilities in the face of increasing threats from China's People's Liberation Army (PLA). Tuo Jiang-class stealth missile corvettes are fast, small and agile ships. Four of such ships have already been commissioned in the Navy, along with a prototype commissioned in 2015. With a maximum speed of 83 kmph, they have an operational range of 1,800 nautical miles. The ships are armed with Hsiung Feng II and III anti-ship missiles and can attack enemy targets on land or sea. They are also equipped with 76mm cannons, Phalanx close-in weapon systems and T74 machine guns. Reuters exclusively reported last year that Li was under investigation for suspected corruption in military procurement. He was mysteriously ousted as defence minister without explanation last October, after disappearing for two months. This is the first time China has explicitly confirmed that Li was under investigation, as well as details of the nature of his crimes.

China's military has undergone a sweeping anti-corruption purge since last year, with eleven PLA generals and a handful of aerospace defence industry executives removed from the national legislative body to date.

Wei Fenghe, Li's predecessor, had disappeared from public view since he was replaced last March during a planned cabinet reshuffle. Wei was head of the strategic People's Liberation Army (PLA) Rocket Force from 2015-17.

President Xi Jinping, also the military's commander-in-chief, appointed a new head and political commissar of the Rocket Force last July, in a major shake-up of the unit that oversees China's conventional and nuclear missiles.

An investigation launched into Wei last September found that he had accepted "a huge amount of money and valuables" in bribes and "helped others gain improper benefits in personnel arrangements", Xinhua reported, adding that his actions were "extremely serious in nature, with a highly detrimental impact and tremendous harm".

Both officials were also found to have other unspecified violations, the reports said without elaborating.

The decisions to strip Li and Wei of their party membership were approved by the seven-member Politburo, the Communist Party's apex of power, on Thursday. The Politburo also transferred both their cases to military prosecutors.

The decision will be confirmed during the party's Third Plenum to be held 15-18 July, when removals from the Central Committee will be formally announced. Ousted former foreign minister Qin Gang still remains a member of the Central Committee.

Xi last week said the PLA faces "deep-seated" political problems and vowed there must be "no hiding place" for corrupt officers.

China will not attend the Ukraine peace conference that is set to take place in Switzerland next month, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry stating that it does not meet its expectation of including both Moscow and Kyiv.

Switzerland is aiming at a broad-based turnout from several parts of the world for the summit that is due for mid-June, which Bern anticipates will do the underpinning for a peace process in Ukraine.

Russia, as per news agency Reuters reports, was not invited and dismisses the talks as meaningless without its participation.

"The arrangements for the meeting still fall far short of China's requests and the general expectations of the international community, making it difficult for China to participate," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a routine briefing.

"China has always insisted that an international peace conference should be endorsed by both Russia and Ukraine, with the equal participation of all parties, and that all peace proposals should be discussed in a fair and equal manner. Otherwise, it will be difficult for it to play a substantive role in restoring peace."

China had earlier this week, as per Reuters, declined the invitation to the summit, stating that its conditions were not met.

The conditions by Beijing included equal participation by both Russia and Ukraine and fair discussions on all proposals.

"We are very sorry that the Chinese side does not use the opportunity to present its position on the platform of the Summit in Switzerland," a spokesperson for the Ukrainian embassy in Beijing was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov put forward a suggestion on Thursday stating that China could arrange a peace conference in which Moscow and Kyiv could participate.

This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China where he said that Ukraine may take the opportunity to get a broader group of countries to back Volodymyr Zelensky's demand for a total Russian withdrawal at the Swiss talks.

Putin during his visit to China also expressed support for Beijing's strategy for a peaceful settlement of the ongoing conflict stating that China had a complete understanding of what lay behind the crisis.

The Swiss foreign ministry said it noted the conditions for China's participation have not yet been met, particularly as Russia is "currently not involved" in the peace conference.

"For Switzerland, Russia's involvement in the peace process is also essential. The (ministry) it is working actively to involve Russia in the peace process," it added.

The Swiss ministry, which previously highlighted its desire to involve Russia in the peace process, said over 80 countries had shared their confirmation for taking part in the conference.

China will not attend the Ukraine peace conference that is set to take place in Switzerland next month, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry stating that it does not meet its expectation of including both Moscow and Kyiv. Switzerland is aiming at a broad-based turnout from several parts of the world for the summit that is due for mid-June, which Bern anticipates will do the underpinning for a peace process in Ukraine. Russia, as per news agency Reuters reports, was not invited and dismisses the talks as meaningless without its participation. "The arrangements for the meeting still fall far short of China's requests and the general expectations of the international community, making it difficult for China to participate," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a routine briefing. "China has always insisted that an international peace conference should be endorsed by both Russia and Ukraine, with the equal participation of all parties, and that all peace proposals should be discussed in a fair and equal manner. Otherwise, it will be difficult for it to play a substantive role in restoring peace." China had earlier this week, as per Reuters, declined the invitation to the summit, stating that its conditions were not met. The conditions by Beijing included equal participation by both Russia and Ukraine and fair discussions on all proposals. "We are very sorry that the Chinese side does not use the opportunity to present its position on the platform of the Summit in Switzerland," a spokesperson for the Ukrainian embassy in Beijing was quoted as saying by Reuters. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov put forward a suggestion on Thursday stating that China could arrange a peace conference in which Moscow and Kyiv could participate. This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China where he said that Ukraine may take the opportunity to get a broader group of countries to back Volodymyr Zelensky's demand for a total Russian withdrawal at the Swiss talks. Putin during his visit to China also expressed support for Beijing's strategy for a peaceful settlement of the ongoing conflict stating that China had a complete understanding of what lay behind the crisis. The Swiss foreign ministry said it noted the conditions for China's participation have not yet been met, particularly as Russia is "currently not involved" in the peace conference. "For Switzerland, Russia's involvement in the peace process is also essential. The (ministry) it is working actively to involve Russia in the peace process," it added. The Swiss ministry, which previously highlighted its desire to involve Russia in the peace process, said over 80 countries had shared their confirmation for taking part in the conference.
