The Chinese envoy who toured European capitals last month seeking to promote&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;peace&nbsp;talks said on Friday that Beijing is considering another&nbsp;mission,&nbsp;after&nbsp;acknowledging that his trip may not produce immediate results.

At a news conference, Li Hui rejected a media report saying he promoted a ceasefire that would leave its ally Russia occupying parts of&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;and said Beijing would "do anything" to ease tensions.

However, there are high hurdles to finding common ground between the warring sides, he added.

"We felt that there is a big gap between both sides' positions ... Getting all sides to negotiate now would still face a lot of difficulties," said Li,&nbsp;China's special envoy for Eurasian affairs and a former long-serving ambassador to Moscow.

"China&nbsp;is willing to actively consider sending another delegation to relevant countries to engage in dialogue on resolving the&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;crisis," said Li, without elaborating on which countries.

In May, Li completed a 12-day tour of Kyiv, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin, Brussels and Moscow in what&nbsp;China&nbsp;said was a bid to find common ground for an eventual political settlement.

"The risk of escalation of the Russia-Ukraine&nbsp;war is still high," Li said, adding that all sides must take concrete measures to "cool down the situation" and ensure the safety of nuclear facilities.

"As long as it's conducive to easing the situation,&nbsp;China&nbsp;is willing to do anything," he said.

The United States and several European countries have urged Beijing to use its influence over Russia to seek an end to the crisis, although Beijing's refusal to condemn Moscow over the invasion has raised suspicion of its motives.

Li,&nbsp;China's ambassador to Moscow from 2009 to 2019, said Russia has appreciated&nbsp;China's desire and efforts to promote a&nbsp;peaceful settlement of the crisis.

The Chinese foreign ministry recently issued a notification for foreign embassies and international organisations asking them not to display “politicised propaganda,” on buildings, reported news agency Reuters, on Wednesday (May 17).&nbsp;

The notice was issued sometime this week and media reports citing diplomatic sources have said that this is in connection with several Western embassies across Beijing displaying Ukrainian flags in solitary amid the ongoing Russian invasion.&nbsp;

Since the invasion began over a year ago, Western embassies across Beijing have put up Ukrainian flags in solidarity, some of which are also accompanied by messages of support in English and Chinese, reported news agency AFP. China, remains an ally of Russia which since the beginning of the conflict has garnered international condemnation along with thousands of sanctions.&nbsp;

“Do not use the building facilities’ exterior walls to display politicised propaganda to avoid inciting disputes between countries,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a notification dated May 10, a copy of which was seen by Reuters. The notice in question is also said to be addressed to “all embassies, and international organisations’ China representative offices.”

While the notice did not mention Ukrainian flags or what amounted to “propaganda” displays, AFP citing several European missions also confirmed that such a notice was sent to officials. Four Beijing-based diplomats, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said it was clearly related to Ukraine solidarity exhibits.&nbsp;

Similarly, one official from a European embassy told AFP it was almost certainly related to several embassies’ prominent display of a Ukrainian flag. However, the report citing another European embassy official said it was unclear whether the request was linked to Ukraine or the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.&nbsp;

This comes as foreign embassies in Beijing reportedly also raised pride flags in recognition of the campaign which was marked on Wednesday ahead of Pride Month in June to raise awareness about the LGBTQ+ rights violations worldwide.&nbsp;

When asked about the notice, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin in his daily briefing, on Wednesday, said that embassies of foreign countries and offices of international organisations in China have the “obligation” to respect Beijing’s “laws and regulations.”&nbsp;

He added, “China calls on embassies of all countries in China...to perform their duties in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations or relevant international agreements,” said Wang, without any further details. Notably, the convention does not list any prohibitions about political signage being displayed on embassies’ outer walls.

The official also told AFP that they “strictly adhere to the Vienna conventions. There is therefore no reason for us to react to this note or to change our display policy”.&nbsp;

Notably, Truss, who is also Britain’s shortest-serving PM, arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday and is also the first former British leader to visit Taiwan since Margaret Thatcher in 1996. Upon her arrival in Taiwan, the former UK PM was greeted by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.&nbsp;

According to media reports, Truss is also due to meet President Tsai Ing-wen, however, officials are yet to confirm if the meeting will take place. The press conference on Wednesday also follows a closed-door speech at Taipei’s Grand Hyatt Hotel hosted by the Prospect Foundation, a government-funded think tank that focuses on cross-strait relations.

Truss’ visit to Taiwan

Truss addressed the press in Taipei City on Wednesday and challenged the incumbent PM to follow through his rhetoric when he called China “the biggest-long term threat to Britain,” during the Conservative party leadership contest. In the speech, Sunak also vowed to close nearly 30 Confucius Institutes in the UK, which promote Chinese culture on campus in higher education and some British schools.&nbsp;

However, the institutes teaching Chinese language and culture recently came under fire amid allegations that these centres are being used by Beijing’s government to spread propaganda, interfere with free speech on campuses, and even spy on students, reported BBC.&nbsp;

During a press conference in Taipei, the former UK PM also asked democratic countries to take a stand against China and make it clear to Beijing that it would face sanctions and other repercussions if it attacked Taiwan. It is “absolutely clear” that Chinese President Xi Jinping has the ambition of taking over Taiwan, said Truss.&nbsp;

She added, “We don’t know exactly when that could take place, we also don’t know how, and it’s my view that the preference of President Xi and the Chinese Communist Party would be to do it in a way that doesn’t involve using force, but I certainly think they would be prepared to use force if necessary,” as quoted by Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

As per media reports, she also drew comparisons between escalating tensions in China and Taiwan and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in London, on Wednesday, said that Truss’s visit to Taiwan was a “dangerous political show which will do nothing but harm to the UK”.&nbsp;

The statement added, “We urge the relevant British politician to correct her wrongdoing, stop making political shows with the Taiwan question and stop conniving at and supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist forces.”

Notably, the former UK PM is the most senior British lawmaker to visit the country since Thatcher in the 1990s. The embassy also suggested that the visit could have repercussions for the government of the incumbent PM Sunak.&nbsp;

As of 6:00 pm (local time), a total of&nbsp;71 people were evacuated and transferred after the rescue work. The investigation for the cause of the fire is underway. 
 
"It's tragic. I can see the accident from the window of my house. A lot of people were standing on the air conditioning unit at noon, and some even jumped off," said a Weibo netizen, as per Reuters. 
 
Furthermore, the Associated Press, citing videos of the fire&nbsp;circulating on Chinese social media said&nbsp;black smoke billowing from the building and some people were seen climbing out of the&nbsp;windows using what appeared to be&nbsp;makeshift ropes made out of bedsheets while some took&nbsp;refuge on air conditioning units outside.&nbsp;

The death toll was released after the&nbsp;victims were taken to another unidentified hospital for emergency treatment, as per media reports. However, there was no immediate clarity on those injured or their condition.&nbsp;

Taiwan claimed that China appears to have changed its plan of declaring a three-day no-fly zone in airspace near the north of Taiwan next week, decreasing the duration of the no-fly zone to just 27 minutes.

Taiwan’s defence ministry spokesperson, while addressing a press conference, said that the no-fly zone is at a distance of 85 nautical miles north of Taiwan.

The spokesperson said that China may be declaring a no-fly zone to conduct aerospace activities, like satellite launches.

As per Reuters, a Chinese official claimed that the air traffic would be significantly affected by the flight ban, disturbing the route of 60 to 70 per cent of flights flying between north-east and south-east Asia, along with flights which will be connecting Taiwan and South Korea, Japan and North America.

Later, Taiwan’s transport ministry claimed that China would confine the no-fly zone to a short period on Sunday after Taipei raised objections over its plans.

Originally, it was claimed that China will be declaring the no-fly zone from April 16 to 18.

On Monday, China announced the end of three-day military drills, which started as a retaliation to the meeting of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in the United States.

On Wednesday, Tsai said that her official trip to the United States showed Taiwan's commitment to defend its democracy, as the country's military plans to begin its own drills.

Tsai said that it is important for democracies to remain united while faced with “continued authoritarian expansionism.”

“Through this trip we again sent a message to the international community that Taiwan is determined to safeguard freedom and democracy which won acknowledgement and support from our democratic partners,” she said while speaking to visiting Canadian lawmakers at her office in Taipei.

As per reports, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is still carrying out military activity around Taiwan even after it formally announced an end to the military drills which continued from Saturday to Monday.

A day after China announced the completion of military drills, Taiwan’s defence ministry, on Tuesday (April 11) said it detected nine Chinese warships and 26 aircraft around the self-governing island. This also comes hours after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen criticised Beijing for its ‘irresponsible’ behaviour, in reference to the recent drills, dubbed as “Joint Sword”.&nbsp;

As of 11:00 am (local time), China “organised military aircraft this morning and crossed the median line from the north, the centre, and the south,” said Taiwan’s defence ministry. The nine Chinese ships and 26 aircraft, including J-16 and Su-30 fighters, were seen carrying out combat readiness patrols around the island, said the defence ministry, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

Taiwan’s defence ministry also said that their air force, navy and shore-based missile crews are closely monitoring the situation and responding. The wargames which were first announced, on Saturday, began hours after Tsai returned from her meeting in Los Angeles with the United States House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy, which China has since condemned.&nbsp;

China claims the democratically governed Taiwan as its territory and threatens to use force to bring the island under its control. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government contests China’s claims.&nbsp;

The United States and European Union, during the drills which were supposed to end on Monday, also asked Beijing to exercise “restraint”. Additionally, Taiwan’s government has repeatedly denounced the drills and reiterated that it will not escalate or provoke.

Tsai, late Monday took to Facebook and wrote that as the president “I represent my country to the world,” adding that her visits outside the island including stops in the US are not new and what Taiwan’s people expect. “However, China is using this to launch military exercises to cause instability in Taiwan and the region, which is not the responsible attitude of a regional power,” said Tsai.

In Uganda's capital Kampala, President Yoweri Museveni called on African leaders to "reject the promotion of homosexuality". The Ugandan president is set to sign a bill that will impose death penalty against same-sex activities.

Protests broke out this week in South Africa's administrative capital Pretoria against Ugandan president Museveni, as activists marched to Ugandan High Commission and called on South African government to speak out against the proposed law. Meanwhile, the UN high commissioner for human rights has urged President Museveni to not sign the regressive bill. A request Museveni does not appear very keen to follow up.&nbsp;

This week, Paul Rusesabagina, Rwanda's most famous political prisoner, and hero of the film 'Hotel Rwanda', was freed from a prison in Kigale. Paul was depicted in the 2004 film about genocide in his country in which hundreds of thousands were killed. The film showed him as savior of more than 1,200 people at the luxury hotel he managed during the genocide. Paul was arrested in Kigale and subsequently charged with terrorism in 2020 after a trial.&nbsp;

Paul reunited with his tearful family at a U.S. Army base in Texas this week.

His freedom marks an end to months of campaign for his release from the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle, the actor who portrayed Paul's role in Hotel Rwanda.&nbsp;

The Capitals: Beijing's charm offensive, Jerusalem on the boil, and more

China, early Saturday (April 8), announced that it was launching a three-day military drill in the Taiwan Strait. According to the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command, “United Sharp Sword” would begin on April 8 and end on April 10 for “combat preparedness.”&nbsp;

The announcement, in the backdrop of the recent escalation in tensions between Beijing and Taipei, took many by surprise but it has not had a similar effect on the residents of either China or Taiwan.&nbsp;

Military drills in Taiwan Strait

After China’s announcement, its fighter jets briefly crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait as they began drills around Taiwan. This comes after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met United States House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other officials during her visit to the U.S., which Beijing has since condemned.&nbsp;

China’s anger at the visit largely stems from its claims that the democratically governed Taiwan is its territory and threatens&nbsp;to use force to bring the island under its control. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government contests China’s claims.&nbsp;

In line with this, the Chinese army’s Eastern Theater Command said that the drills are a “serious warning to the Taiwan independence separatist forces and external forces’ collusion and provocation, and it is a necessary action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said it was monitoring the drills and would respond appropriately to defend the island’s security and released a video message, emphasising they would monitor the situation without escalating tensions. The video shows Taiwan’s army, navy and air force conducting drills and monitoring China’s movements.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Chinese tourists on an island near Taiwan were largely unaware and least bothered by Beijing’s military drill launch in the strait beyond, reported the news agency AFP. The tourists at the time were present along the coast of Pingtan, a scenic isle that is the closest point on the mainland to Taiwan.&nbsp;

“I saw the news, but it’s not going to stop our plans for today,” a 30-year-old visitor named Wu told AFP. He added, “Relations with Taiwan aren't great at the moment, but they’re stable. We hope for peaceful reunification.”&nbsp;

Similarly, another man named Lin said that the drills were just “a few preventive measures being taken by the government,” and hoped that China and Taiwan would reunify someday.&nbsp;

“The drills are just a way to show our national strength, after all. Our government's response to Tsai's visit to the U.S. is quite strong - &nbsp;took her down a couple of notches and restored people's confidence for us to reclaim Taiwan,” Chen, a 25-year-old college student from Guangdong province visiting Pingtan island, told Reuters. Chen also expressed hope that China can reclaim Taiwan in a “peaceful” way.

Taiwan remains calm amid military drills

There was no broader sense of alarm in Taiwan about the military drills as people have long been accustomed to Chinese threats, reported Reuters, citing a senior Taiwan official familiar with security planning in the region who spoke to the news agency on the condition of anonymity. The official said that the situation was “as expected” and manageable and the Taiwanese government has rehearsed various scenarios for its response.&nbsp;

“I have seen the news (about the China drills), when there were things like this in the past, before the war in Ukraine, I always just thought it’s how things are. Even now&nbsp;I don’t totally think that these drills will create security concerns for us, but everything that they (China) do, is to push the limits,” Lu Chi-hao, 30, told Reuters.&nbsp;

This comes as China’s amphibious landing ship — capable of transporting troops, craft and vehicles — fired multiple rounds of artillery early Saturday in the Luoyan Bay area on the coast of Fujian province.&nbsp;
