The Barca coach, however, said that the club's performance wasn't as bad as the result showed. He acknowledged that the result&nbsp;was disastrous.

"It is a disastrous result, but the performance was not disastrous," Xavi said in the news conference after the defeat.

"It's a big blow because we were hoping to get back within two points of the leaders.

"This is the reality. It's a Barça side in construction. These things happen when you are building, taking a step back to hopefully take two forward.

Spanish football club Barcelona have confirmed that their star player Gavi suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear and will undergo surgery, which rules him out of competitive football for at least seven to nine months.&nbsp;

Gavi suffered the injury during his national team's Euro qualifier match against Georgia on Sunday (Nov 19). The teenager was forced off the field in tears and it quickly became evident that he had suffered some serious damage.&nbsp;

“Tests carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus," Barcelona said in a statement.

"The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released.”

The injury means that Gavi will miss the rest of the La Liga season as well as the Champions League campaign for the Catalan side. As for the national team, it looks highly unlikely that he will be available for Euro 2024, scheduled to take place in Germany in June&nbsp;2024.&nbsp;

<h2>Massive blow for Spain and Barcelona</h2>

The injury is a massive blow as Gavi, despite being a teenager, had become a central part of both Barcelona and Spain. Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has described the boy wonder as the “heart and soul” due to his tenacity and desire for the game.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, however, has come under heavy scrutiny from the fans for playing Gavi in a dead-rubber where most of the starters had been given a rest.&nbsp;

Speaking after the match, De la Fuente said the dressing room wore the look of a funeral.&nbsp;

“The dressing room is like a funeral parlour. It was an accident, it could have happened to anyone," said De la Fuente who revealed that it was a few minutes after Luka Lochoshvili's challenge that Gavi suffered the injury, attempting to control the ball midway through the first half.&nbsp;

The injury has reopened the debate about players being forced to play an excessive number of games at the elite level. Still only 19, Gavi has already played over 100 times for Barcelona and has made 27 appearances for Spain.

The likes of Gavi and other top footballers are forced to play over 60 games a season if their club team goes the distance in all tournaments. With international games, the tally goes upward of 70, meaning the players have less and less recovery time between the matches.&nbsp;

The teenager was forced off the field in tears and it quickly became evident that he had suffered some serious damage. “Tests carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus," Barcelona said in a statement. "The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released.” The injury means that Gavi will miss the rest of the La Liga season as well as the Champions League campaign for the Catalan side. As for the national team, it looks highly unlikely that he will be available for Euro 2024, scheduled to take place in Germany in June 2024. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, however, has come under heavy scrutiny from the fans for playing Gavi in a dead-rubber where most of the starters had been given a rest. Speaking after the match, De la Fuente said the dressing room wore the look of a funeral. “The dressing room is like a funeral parlour. It was an accident, it could have happened to anyone," said De la Fuente who revealed that it was a few minutes after Luka Lochoshvili's challenge that Gavi suffered the injury, attempting to control the ball midway through the first half. The injury has reopened the debate about players being forced to play an excessive number of games at the elite level. Still only 19, Gavi has already played over 100 times for Barcelona and has made 27 appearances for Spain. The likes of Gavi and other top footballers are forced to play over 60 games a season if their club team goes the distance in all tournaments. Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has urged his teammates to express more of their feelings, especially after a stinging loss against arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Clasico.&nbsp; Gundogan was speaking after Real Madrid completed a comeback win against the Catalan side at their home ground, deep in the stoppage time.&nbsp;

Gundogan had fired Barcelona to advantage after an early goal when David Alaba failed to clear the ball, leaving the former Manchester City player to tiptoe around the penalty box before guiding&nbsp;the ball past a diving Kepa Arrizabalaga.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Yamal has established himself as an important part of Barca's forward line in the early stages of the season, and was named man of the match in last weekend's 4-3 come-from-behind win at Villarreal in LaLiga.

Mahrez scored 78 goals and made 59 assists in 236 appearances in all competitions with City, and won 11 trophies at the club, including five league titles following his move from Leicester City in 2018.

The 32-year-old saw his role for Pep Guardiola's side reduced last season, scoring 15 goals in 47 games, but missing out on action in the FA Cup and Champions League finals as City won a historic treble.

Mahrez becomes the latest big-name signing in the Saudi Pro League, which has become an attractive destination for Europe-based players since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr last January.

Al-Ahli, who sealed promotion to the Pro League after spending one season in the second division last term, have also signed Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino on a free transfer and Chelsea's Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on a three-year deal.

Last month, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced a Sports Clubs Investment and Privatization Project involving the league champions Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal.

Alba arrives on a free transfer after his Barcelona contract was terminated by mutual agreement in May after 11 years in the club.

The 34-year-old left-back will join former Barcelona team mates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, who arrived earlier to the Florida side.

"Jordi is an accomplished, dynamic and experienced player that we’re excited to acquire to continue bolstering our squad," the American club's chief soccer director and sporting director Chris Henderson said.

Alba has made 93 international appearances for Spain and was part of the squad which won Euro 2012.

Oriol Romeu returns to the Club for a second time after arriving at La Masia in 2004 to form part of the FC Barcelona youth set-up. The midfielder from Ulldecona in Catalonia moved through the categories to form part of the Barca Atletic squad under then-coach Luis Enrique, gaining experience playing in the Second Division of Spanish Football.

Romeu made his first team debut in 2010/11, playing twice that season under Pep Guardiola. At the end of the 2010/11 season, Oriol Romeu headed to London where he joined Chelsea. In his first season, he claimed the Champions League title with the Premier League side before gaining experience via loan spells with Valencia and Stuttgart.

The midfielder returned to England to sign for Southampton where he became a firm favourite with the fans at the Premier League club in 256 appearances over seven seasons.

In September 2022, Oriol Romeu returned to La Liga to join Girona. Over the season he played more than anyone else in Míchel’s side, clocking up 3,042 minutes out on the field. The midfielder’s contribution helped the Catalan club to a comfortable 10th place in the table on their return to the Spanish top flight.

Romeu has great experience and knows the Club from his previous spell as a Blaugrana and the style of play Xavi Hernandez wants to impress on his team. 32 years of age in September, the midfielder has shown what he can do in La Liga and will look to perform right from the off.
