As quoted by the agency, the sources said, "The test was carried out to validate new technologies and equipment on the missile which is now lighter than before. The trial has proved the capability to enhance the range of the Agni-5 missile if required."&nbsp;

As per the reports, the launch was carried out at approximately 5:30pm (local time) from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in the eastern Indian state of Odisha.&nbsp;

The Indian defence ministry said that the missile can hit a target up to a range of 5,000 kilometres. It also has a very high degree of accuracy. The missile uses a three-stage solid-fuelled engine.&nbsp;

As per the report, the ministry further stated that the successful test of Agni-5 is in line with India's stated policy to have 'credible minimum deterrence' that highlights the commitment to 'No First Use'.&nbsp;

On Saturday, North Korea defended its latest series of missile tests. It said that the missile launches were a counter to US military threats.&nbsp;

North Korea fires two more ballistic missiles, seventh launch in two weeks

The conflict between North Korea and South Korea continues as the former fired two short-range ballistic missiles on the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula on Thursday.

The missiles were launched in the direction of Japan in retaliation to the joint military drills conducted by South Korea and the United States. This was the sixth missile launch by Pyongyang in a little less than two weeks and it has drawn criticism from several countries and the United Nations.

“This is the sixth time in the short period just counting the ones from the end of September,” Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida told reporters. “This absolutely cannot be tolerated.”

The United States brought up the topic of the missile launches in front of the United Nations security council where it was condemned by as many as nine countries - the United States, Britain, France, Albania, Brazil, India, Ireland, Norway and United Arab Emirates.

However, North Korea criticised them for misunderstanding “counteraction measures of the Korean People’s Army on South Korea-US joint drills.” The foreign ministry issued a statement which also said that the US should be interfere in the region’s politics with the joint military drills.

Earlier, the US accused Russia and China of shielding North Korea by stopping the United Nations Security Council from imposing sanctions on Pyongyang.

"The DPRK (North Korea) has enjoyed blanket protection from two members of this council," U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said according to Reuters.

"In short, two permanent members of the Security Council have enabled Kim Jong Un."

John Kirby, the National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, told CNN that the tests carried out by the US and the South Korean military on Wednesday was aimed at showing “the military capabilities at the ready to respond to provocations by the North.”

“This is not the first time we’ve done this in response to provocations by the North to make sure that we can demonstrate our own capabilities,” Kirby said.

“We want to see the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un) hasn’t shown an inclination to move in that direction, quite frankly he’s moving in the opposite direction by continuing to conduct these missile tests which are violations of security council resolutions,” he added.

Earlier, North Korea decided to test a number of missiles without any prior warning.

"Over the past year, we have sent such messages in multiple ways, through third parties, directly in writing," he added, noting that included North Korea neighbor China.

Such messages included specific proposals on humanitarian cooperation and assistance with the recent Covid-19 outbreak in North Korea, said Kim.

"However, to date, the DPRK has not responded and continues to show no indication that is interested in engaging," he said.

It is believed that North Korea is poised to test a new nuclear weapon.
