NASA found the 'most lunar-like' place on Earth to prepare the crew for the first journey to the moon after more than half a century as part of the Artemis II.

The country chosen for this task was Iceland which has rugged terrain similar to the lunar surface.

NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen and backup crew members NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and CSA astronaut Jenni Gibbons hiked across the country.

"Apollo astronauts said Iceland was one of the most lunar-like training locations that they went to in their training," said Cindy Evans, Artemis geology training lead at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, in a statement.

"It has lunar-like planetary processes—in this case, volcanism. It has the landscape; it looks like the Moon. And it has the scale of features astronauts will both be observing and exploring on the Moon," he added.

How has Iceland become the 'most lunar-like' place for NASA?

According to NASA, the landscape of Iceland is filled with lava fields, volcanic craters, and barren, rocky terrain which has a resemblance with the lunar surface.

Special rocks like breccias and basalts, which are found on the lunar surface, are also present in Iceland because of the intense volcanic activity of the country.

Iceland's geology helps astronauts practice working in terrains similar to those on the moon and get trained in techniques used for identifying, collecting, and documenting rocks and soil samples with the help of specially designed tools.

The astronaut crew also worked on their navigation skills and spent time living and working together like they would in space.

"The tools we used during the Apollo missions haven't changed that much for what we're planning for the Artemis missions," said Trevor Graff, exploration geologist and the hardware and testing lead on the Artemis science team at NASA Johnson, in the statement.

"Traditionally, a geologist goes out with just standard tool sets of things like rock hammers and scoops or shovels to sample the world around them, both on the surface and subsurface," he added.

Humans will go back to the lunar surface for the first time after 1972 as part of Artemis III.

As part of the mission, the astronauts will land near the lunar South Pole and will spend nearly a week conducting scientific research on the lunar surface.

According to NASA, the mission will launch "no earlier than Sept. 2026."

"There's really transformational science that we can learn by getting boots back on the Moon, getting samples back, and being able to do field geology with trained astronauts on the surface," said Angela Garcia, who is an exploration geologist and an Artemis II science officer at NASA Johnson.

NASA finalises 'most lunar-like' place on Earth to train crew for Artemis II. It was...

Artemis missions are the next big thing scientists have their eyes set on. The core stage of the rocket that will take astronauts to the moon in over 50 years is out of the manufacturing facility and on the way for vehicle integration and assembly. The second stage of the moon mission will launch next year and take human beings around the lunar body.

The Artemis 2 booster rolled out of NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, in New Orleans on July 16, exactly 55 years after the Apollo 11 was launched to the moon. The booster is 212 feet long and has four RS-25 engines. It was later loaded onto NASA's Pegasus barge and shipped to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), in Florida. Michoud workers and several of their guests gathered to witness the historic rocket roll out and move one step closer to a lunar liftoff.

Artemis II will take a crew aboard the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft around the moon in 2025. The last time man went to the moon was in 1972. Over 50 years later, scientists need to understand what can be sustained in deep space. This is what the Artemis mission aims to explore. It will help them learn if the spacecraft’s systems operate as designed in the actual environment of deep space.

Artemis moon mission: 55 years after man launched for moon, Artemis II rocket booster rolls out

In a step forward for the Artemis II mission, the Orion crew and service modules that are to be used were joined on October 19 at the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the space agency said.

NASA's Artemis II program is the first crewed mission that will take astronauts around the moon. It is planned to be launched in November 2024. The 10-day flight will test NASA's "foundational human deep space exploration capabilities, the SLS rocket, Orion spacecraft" with astronauts. The uncrewed Artemis I became a huge success for NASA in 2022.

The joining of the crew and service modules came after NASA engineers successfully completed the hardware installations and testing over the past several months.

Under the ambitious mission, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen will venture around the Moon and come back to Earth.

With the crew and service modules integrated, NASA said that the team of engineers will now power up the combined crew and service module for the first time.

"After power on test is complete, Orion will begin altitude chamber testing, which will put the spacecraft through conditions as close as possible to the environment it will experience in the vacuum of deep space," the space agency said.

"The SLS core stage, at 212 feet, is the backbone of the Moon rocket. Its two huge propellant tanks provide more than 733,000 gallons of super-chilled liquid propellant to the four RS-25 engines, while the stage’s flight computers, avionics, and electrical systems act as the “brains” of the rocket. During Artemis II, the RS-25 engines will together provide more than 2 million pounds of thrust for eight minutes of flight, helping to send the Artemis II crew beyond low-Earth orbit to venture around the Moon," NASA said in a statement.
