From Ant-Man 3 to Eternals: MCU's 10 worst-reviewed movies ever

<p>Marvel Studios' latest, <em>Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania</em>, has proven to be a disappointment for most critics, and it is not even performing as well as the overseers of MCU would like. The writer of the film Jeff Loveness has revealed that he was deeply affected by the negative reception and he was surprised.</p>

<p>He told The Daily Beast, "To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise. I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?’"</p>

<p>He insisted that he is "proud of what I wrote for Jonathan [Majors] and Michelle Pfeiffer [scientist Janet Pym]. I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.”</p>

The studio has reaped rich dividends in the last decade or so with properties like Marvel and Star Wars. But in this humongous machine, not every cog is working as well as it should. Many of the company's Marvel shows and movies, which come under the umbrella of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have suffered in quality after the 2019's culmination that was <em>Avengers: Endgame</em>. The latest entry, <em>Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania</em>, was supposed to be this important and yet light-hearted introduction to the next Big Bad of MCU, called Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, and yet the film did not please most critics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the major things critics took exception to was the CGI quality of the film.</p>

<p>Now, as per a report in Vulture, it may be the case that bad CGI and VFX in the film may have been due to the focus being on <strong><em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever</em></strong>. Both films were in development and post-production at the same time. And it appears the VFX artists on <em>Quantumania </em>were not provided proper resources as compared to those working on <em>Wakanda Forever.</em></p>

<h2>Why are VFX artists resentful?</h2>

<p>VFX artists have long been complaining about long hours, low pay, lack of job security, and poor working conditions in Hollywood. They are often required to work overtime and weekends to meet tight deadlines, and the intense pressure to deliver high-quality work can lead to burnout and mental health issues. Many VFX artists have also expressed frustration with the lack of recognition they receive for their contributions to blockbuster films, which often generate billions of dollars in revenue.&nbsp;</p>

Marvel spending a bit more money to pay more VFX people wouldn’t make that much of a difference for the executives all the way at the top. But if it comes down to them not being comfortable with their bank numbers and us working until burnout, we lose out every time. Honestly, I equate it to human greed."</p>

<p>One other said, "Wakanda Forever took precedence. It felt like the higher-up and supervisor roles were shifted around to put that on their plates and there was a smaller team working on Ant-Man. It was on the back burner — less of a pressing thing. Maybe the director had an idea of what he wanted, but he wasn’t 100 percent clear. We had a rough environment that we were sticking a few main characters in. At that time, we weren’t told where the characters should be in that environment. We were just going with what felt right. Then there were times when we were creating an actor’s entire action: Ant-Man moving across something. And you just think, Why didn’t they film it the right way or how they wanted in the first place? Why are we having to redo and re-create? Why do we have to Frankenstein together an actor’s performance? A quick shot that maybe takes two seconds would have to be redone 20 times to get the look that they want. There was a lot of reworking, a lot of inefficiency. I ended up taking over and reworking a large portion of other artists’ work — which is not how things usually go when you are working for other studios."</p>

<p>In recent years, some VFX artists have organised to demand better working conditions and unionisation, which they believe would give them greater bargaining power and more leverage in negotiations with studios.</p>

The sandbox allows the writers to create exciting, interconnected stories and explore the more interesting supporting characters further through spinoffs movies or TV shows. The world feels richer, complex, and lived-in when you spot hints of other characters while watching a movie or show unrelated to them. That sense of unity and shared continuity is what comic-book companies have cashed in on for decades.</p>

<p>But then, there are pitfalls as well. The tone largely has to stay the same. Feige and his team have to make sure the scribes understand the connections between the characters. And this breeds mediocrity of relying upon callbacks, cameos, and Easter eggs. It's not as though I completely abhor those. I began reading comics before I was 10 and have not stopped. I think I never will. I love all references to other stuff, but in moderation. Even as just a consumer of these stories, I understand they cannot collectively serve as an alternative to a well-crafted story, engaging dialogue, and fully-realised characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But since this is the almighty formula and this is what fans of these movies expect, the people in charge of the MCU have no choice but to cater to those expectations.&nbsp;</p>

He is not all-powerful, but has technology, mind, and will at his disposal that is far superior to any superhero alone. Jonathan Majors plays Kang as somebody truly desperate but will never let it show on his face. He hides devilish intelligence beneath a reasonable, mild-mannered demeanour. "Just give me this, and I will give you that in return," he says, straight-faced (paraphrased to protect spoilers, of course). But Majors is nuanced enough to make that statement give an edge. It is a full-bodied performance that makes the movie less of a chore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Everything that is good about <em>Quantumania </em>is due to the actors doing their very best considering the material they are saddled with and talented VFX artists making the film visually pretty if nothing else. I dared to imagine what the movie would have been like if nor for Rudd, Jonathan Majors, and others in the cast... and I would not want to live in that timeline. This is bad enough. The script tries to instill a little goofiness à la <em>Thor: Ragnarok</em>, but it too feels forced, like it was just a half-hearted attempt to fit the movie in the mould of the 'delightfully deranged' side of MCU.&nbsp;</p>

Scott and others reunite and defeat Kang but a warning given by the Conqueror haunts Scott: that only he can stop what's coming. And that may mean the annihilation of the multiverse. The giant storyline is certainly worth an <em>Avengers </em>movie. But we expect an entire army of Kangs to invade earth in MCU. <p>A new behind-the-scenes featurette from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been revealed. The film kicks off the Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and introduces the next big Thanos-like villain, Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror. The featurette has Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige talking about the importance of the superhero, and indeed the film. While Scott Lang or Ant-Man, Paul Rudd's shape-shifting superhero, was a minor player before, he helped save the world and undo Thanos' snap in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. "Ant-Man is arguably the character that is the most underestimated. Ant-Man became the key to saving the universe in Avengers: Endgame. So carrying that tradition, we thought, well, let’s use this film to kick off Phase 5," says Feige.</p>

As his title 'Conqueror' hints, he loves conquering. But his conquests are not of land but temporal. A descendant of Nathaniel Richards, which is also Kang's own name, and also of Reed Richards, better known as Mister Fantastic, Kang found out about the time travel technology invented by Doctor Doom and sought to use it, thus becoming a conqueror of temporal domains.&nbsp;</p>

Reed was speaking to Entertainment Weekly when he said, "People felt like, Oh, these are fun little palate cleansers after a gigantic Avengers movie. For this third one, I said, 'I don't want to be the palate cleanser anymore. I want to be the big Avengers movie. I grew up a real Marvel comics nerd, and there are a handful of antagonists in the Marvel comics universe who are all-timers. Loki, obviously. Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four. And Kang the Conqueror." In the comics, Kang has dominion over time, he's a time traveler. His situation is a little bit different in this movie, which I won't spoil for you, but he's someone who, [while] we live very linear lives, from childhood to death, Kang doesn't exist that way. It struck me as interesting to take the tiniest Avengers — in some people's minds maybe the least powerful Avengers — and put them up against the most powerful force in the multiverse." Kang is a popular character among comic book readers. As his title 'Conqueror' hints, he loves conquering. But his conquests are not of land but temporal. A descendant of Nathaniel Richards, which is also Kang's own name, and also of Reed Richards, better known as Mister Fantastic, Kang found out about the time travel technology invented by Doctor Doom and sought to use it, thus becoming a conqueror of temporal domains. The huge storyline is certainly worth an 'Avengers' movie. The movie will likely be bigger than the last two movies in the franchise -- 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame', which themselves brought together a cast of dozens of characters. Meanwhile, 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' also stars Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, Jonathan Majors, David Dastmalchian, and Randall Park. It releases on February 17, 2023.
