An American teenager, who shot dead four of his classmates in 2021 at a high school outside Detroit, was on Friday (Dec 8) sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

Ethan Crumbley had opened fire on Nov 30 2021 with a semi-automatic handgun that his father bought as a Christmas gift days before the incident occurred.

The shooting claimed the lives of four and injured six other students along with a teacher. Crumbley was 15 years old at the time of the shooting.

His parents have also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting.

This is one of the first cases in the United States that has held parents accountable for their child's school shooting.

The revelation was made after a recent survey conducted by the research institute Echelon Insights said that a significant majority of American adults, approximately 72 per cent, would not be willing to volunteer for military service in the event of a major war.

The polling that included 1,029 likely voters during the period corresponding between October 23-26, revealed that only 21 per cent American youngsters were willing to serve in the Army while the remaining were uncertain.

The trend coincides with a decline in public confidence in the armed forces, with all branches facing challenges in meeting recruitment targets in recent years.

In 2023, both the Army and Air Force fell short by about 10,000 recruits each, and the Navy lagged behind by 6,000. The latest in a spate of mass shootings in the United States, that claimed the lives of 18 and wounded 13 others in the state of Maine earlier this week, has put a spotlight on America's enduring gun problem.

The main suspect Robert R. Card, a US Army reservist, opened fire in a bowling alley and a bar in the city of Lewiston on Wednesday (Oct 25).

After an extensive manhunt of about two days, the 40-year-old assailant was found dead inside a cargo trailer parked on the lot of a recycling plant where he once used to work, the police said on Saturday.

Card reportedly took his own life and suffered from serious mental health issues.

Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck during a press briefing said that the shooter had been hearing voices and was suffering from paranoia.

"Clearly, there's a mental health component to this," he told reporters.

Sauschuck further revealed that investigators found a note that Card left to a loved one which had a password to his phone and bank account information. It had the tone of a suicide letter, he added.

Card tried to buy silencer for rifle months before shooting

Card had tried to buy a silencer for a rifle at a local firearms store months before the most lethal act of firearms violence in the state's history, ABC News reported citing the shop owner.

“He came in and filled out the form, he checked off a box that incriminated himself saying that he was in an institution,” Rick LaChapelle, owner of Coastal Defense Firearms, said. “Our staff was fantastic, let him finish filling out the form, and said, ‘I'm sorry, Mr Card, we cannot give you this… at this point in time, we cannot release this silencer to you because of the answers that you've given us'.”

LaChapelle added, "We did what we were supposed to do and hopefully saved a lot of lives by just following the proper procedures.”

He further said that if Card had succeeded in purchasing the silencer, the rampage would have gotten uglier because people at the bar and the bowling alley, would not have heard the firing.

“He could have spent more time in each location,” LaChapelle was quoted as saying by ABC News. “And it could have been more methodical, and my heart goes out to the people, the victims.
Gun violence, so far, killed at least 35,275 people in US

In 2023, gun violence sprung up as clearly one of the most prevalent issues in the United States, with more than 565 incidents of mass shootings as of Oct 26, as per the Gun Violence Archive.

According to the data, the lethal episodes of firearms violence in the US have so far killed at least 35,275 people with nearly 1,157 victims in their teens and 246 being children.

The Gun Violence Archive estimated approximately 645 mass shooting incidents in 2022 and 690 in 2021.

At this time in 2022, the US had witnessed 559 mass shootings.

US holds approximately 40% of the world’s guns

According to an estimate by the Small Arms Survey, there are more than a billion guns in the world with a notable majority of them being possessed by civilians.

The research estimated that out of the 857 million civilian-held firearms estimated in 2017, 393 million were in the United States. This figure was more than those held by civilians in the other top 25 countries combined.

The study showed that the US outnumbered other countries by holding more than 40% of the world's guns.

"With acquisition averaging around 14 million guns annually during the last five years, growth of civilian holdings in the United States contributes disproportionately to the increase of the global firearms stockpile," said author and Small Arms Survey senior consultant Aaron Karp,
who is also a senior lecturer at Old Dominion University.

Skygazers across the world, mark your calendars as "shooting stars" with their origin from the famous Halley's Comet will be visible this weekend (Oct 20-Oct 21). They will appear to originate from the Orion constellation - just above the famous Orion Belt of three bright stars - and hence it has been named an Orionid meteor shower.

Halley's Comet is the most famous short-period comet and the only one that can be seen twice in one human lifetime. The Orionids happen due to the dust and debris left behind in the inner solar system by Halley's Comet.

What are Orionids?

"Shooting stars" are a result of dust and debris from comets, which release energy when they strike the Earth's atmosphere.

The upcoming Orionids are one of the two annual meteor showers caused by Halley's comet, the other being the Eta Aquariids spotted in April this year.

Halley's comet was last seen in 1986 in the inner solar system. Every 75 years, Halley's Comet, a massive snowball of ice, rock, and dust, reaches the inner solar system, where it melts and leaves behind debris. Meteor showers occur because this debris travels into Earth's orbit around the sun. The giant comet will return in 2061 after reaching its halfway point in December of this year and then beginning its journey back towards the inner solar system.

The Orionids are already active, having started on September 26 and set to continue until November 22, although the important peak is on Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21.

Where to see the Orionids

Around 10-20 "shooting stars" should be visible per hour as the Orionids will reach their peak this weekend. This peak will occur at midnight EDT in North America, according to the American Meteor Society.

However, it is recommended to see the peak of the meteor shower any time after dark - in this case, on Friday, Oct 20 to dawn on Saturday, Oct 21. There are other dynamics too, especially the weather and the moon phase.

Even though you'll need clear skies to see anything noteworthy, sky conditions are good for this year’s Orionids, especially if you’re willing to stay up late. This is so because there's a first quarter moon, which will set at around midnight and is strong enough to bleach the night sky and make it harder to see the "shooting stars".

Therefore, the early hours of Saturday, October 21, will probably be the best time to watch the Orionids.

How to watch

The preferable way to approach the Orionids is to treat it as a stargazing session. So, get ready to enjoy the magnificent Orionid meteor shower which will rise high into the southeastern sky after midnight.

This is not the only launch for the APEP. On April 8, 2024, when a total solar eclipse will sweep the United States from Texas to Maine, the APEP rockets that were launched in New Mexico will be recovered and then launched once more from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Although the April launches will provide a chance to gauge how far-reaching an eclipse's effects are, they will be farther from the eclipse path than the October annular eclipse.

While skywatchers and eclipse chasers in America will watch the sun dim to 10% of its normal brightness, NASA will be busy firing rockets as part of the mission. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University engineering physics professor, Aroh Barjatya is in charge of a NASA mission that will launch three rockets to study how the sudden drop in sunlight affects the atmosphere during the eclipse. Why is NASA launching rockets into the 'ring of fire' eclipse?

A letter was written by Christopher Columbus in 1493 which changed the modern world's landscape.

“I sailed to the Indies with the fleet that the illustrious King and Queen, our sovereigns, gave me, where I discovered a great many islands, inhabited by numberless people,” Columbus wrote to royal treasurer Luis de Santángel, after writing back to Europe. “Of all, I have taken possession for their Highnesses,” he said.

The events mentioned in the letter of Columbus were “the first report of a voyage that really did change the world," said his biographer Professor Felipe Fernández-Armesto, while speaking to The Observer.

Letter likely to fetch $1.5 million at Christie’s auction

The rare 1493 Latin translation of Columbus' letter, which was printed on an early printing press to narrate the news of “discoveries” of the travellers to elite Europeans, is likely to fetch up to £1.2 million ($1.5 million) at a Christie’s auction this month.

“[In current times] Columbus has lost his former status as an honorary all-American hero and quasi-founding father, but notoriety rarely hurts one’s market value, especially in the US. Witness Donald Trump,” stated Fernández-Armesto.

For the first time, the voyage of Columbus created “a viable, commercially exploitable route” across the Atlantic and started communications between long-sundered cultures on both sides of the ocean, said Fernández-Armesto.

In the letter, the rich natural assets which were found by Columbus on the islands were praised in the letter. The traveller also portrayed the “extraordinarily timid” native people he encountered there as “so unsuspicious and so generous” they are “like fools”.

“Like him or not, you can’t deny Columbus’s importance,” said Fernandez-Armesto, as reported by The Observer.

For almost a century, the document was kept in a private Swiss collection and has been described by Christie’s as “the earliest obtainable edition of Columbus’s letter”, whose international publication led to one of the first “media frenzies” for the printed word.

“The significance of the letter is its wide diffusion, thanks to the printing press,” stated Professor Geoffrey Symcox from the University of California, Los Angeles, while speaking to The Observer.

Symcox said that the experts used cutting-edge technology of that era after which copies of the letter were sent to the Spanish crown to the courts of Europe to stake Spain’s claim. “The news circulated rapidly, not just through diplomatic channels but mercantile channels as well,” he added.

To understand why the United States is caught in a vicious circle of violence, it helps to look at a number of “only in America” statistics and explain the easy, legal way to get a gun in the country that accounts for less than five per cent of the world’s population and 46 per cent of global civilian gun ownership.

First, a little-known but startling statistic: There are around 78,000 federally licensed gun dealers in the country. That is more than all McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway and Wendy’s locations combined, according to a recent count by Every Town for Gun Safety, an advocacy network founded a decade ago by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Since the beginning of the year, those dealers sold an estimated average of 42,000 guns a day and the rush for guns shows no signs of abating. That number is extrapolated from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) which was created in the wake of an unsuccessful 1981 attempt to assassinate then-President Ronald Reagan. His press secretary, James Brady, was permanently disabled by a gunshot wound in the attack.

Brady died in 1974. His wife, Sarah, founded the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence which keeps track of firearms sales on the basis of NICS Firearms Transaction Records, a short form prospective gun buyers need to complete to buy a firearm. The form is emailed by the dealer to the FBI which responds within minutes, reflecting the “instant” in NICS.

The Brady campaign filters out categories on the forms that are not directly related to sales and its estimates tend to be more conservative than those of other groups that equate NICS checks with sales. But there is consensus that over the years, the number of firearms in civilian hands has grown relentlessly and now far exceeds the population of 333.2 million.

While the American arsenal grew by millions in the first six months of the year, the death toll from firearms ran around 125 a day, roughly the average over the past few years. There were more suicides than murders. Mass shootings, defined by the Gun Violence Archive as at least four people killed or wounded, totalled 333 halfway through the year.

Worth noting: The astonishing numbers estimated on the basis of NICS minimise the huge size of the arsenal. A private citizen selling a firearm to another private citizen does not need to file a transaction record. How many such private deals are made is not known, which is why groups advocating for better controls have been calling for “universal background checks” for decades.

Polls show overwhelming public support for such checks but a string of attempts to translate that into law has failed over the years thanks largely to vigorous and well-funded efforts by lobbyists for the gun industry, most prominently the National Rifle Association (NRA). It portrays itself as the key defender of the right to own guns enshrined in the Second Amendment of the US constitution.

To the uncountable number of privately-sold weapons, add a relatively new phenomenon –“ghost guns.” These are firearms assembled from kits sold online and have, in the words of Every Town for Gun Safety, become “a weapon of choice for violent criminals, including white supremacists.” Unlike guns produced by manufacturers, ghost guns carry no serial numbers and thus cannot be traced.

Ghost guns were a niche product for do-it-yourself enthusiasts for years but sales took off around 2009 when California state law banned the sale of semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15. Since then, sales have risen steadily and several ghost guns have been linked to mass shootings, including one at Santa Monica College which killed six students.

By 2019, there were so many in circulation that authorities reported having recovered around 10,000 following shooting incidents around the country. In Washington, plagued by a series of carjackings by armed teenagers in the past few months, ghost guns were used in many of the incidents.

With so many guns in circulation, legally bought or home-made, who makes up the client base for more?

Recent research indicates that the demographic of gun ownership has been changing, a development experts link to the outbreak of the Covid pandemic and the uncertainties it injected into daily life. The National Shooting Sports Federation, the firearms industry’s trade association, found that gun ownership among Black Americans jumped 56 per cent from 2019 to 2020, the first full year of the pandemic.

According to a recent preliminary study by Harvard University, a 14 per cent increase in gun purchases by women brought female gun ownership in the country to 42 per cent.

This is no longer the stereotypical demographic then presidential candidate Barack Obama apparently had in mind when, on the campaign trail in 2008, he referred to jobless working-class Americans in industrial towns as bitter people who “cling to guns and religion.”

The majority of gun owners are still white men but now, statistics indicate, of diverse backgrounds. Your friendly neighbourhood office commuter is just as likely to carry a gun as your car mechanic. You wouldn’t know because it would be tucked out of sight.

All 50 states allow citizens over 21 to carry a concealed handgun. In 27 states, no permit for “concealed carry” is required. In others, obtaining a permit is obligatory and can be difficult. Allowing citizens to carry their guns concealed without a permit has been a top priority of the firearms industry. Its leaders argue that there should be no bureaucratic hurdles to the constitutional right to guns.

One side-effect of greater numbers of women arming up is the growth of a fashion industry which designs clothes that make it easy to hide their guns and stay fashionable. Last year’s NRA convention featured a “concealed carry fashion show” where models displayed guns tucked into their underwear.

One website for the fashionable gunwoman shows a model wearing a floor-length evening dress over a gun held in an ankle holster. Another site offers a loose blouse with a large decorative front knot covering a gun. Purses with special compartments are also in demand.

Mass shootings have been almost exclusively the preserve of men and overall, men are more trigger-happy than women. But this may be changing if a recent shooting in the Texas city of El Paso serves as an indicator.

In mid-June, Phoebe Copas, a visitor from Kentucky, booked an Uber ride to take her to a casino in the city. El Paso adjoins the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez and the two are divided by the Rio Grande. When Copas saw a road sign to one of the border crossing points to Mexico, she told police, she thought she was being kidnapped.

Whereupon she took a gun out of her handbag and shot the Uber driver in the back of the head. The driver died. The shooter faces murder charges.

Americans respond to epidemic of gun violence by buying more guns

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (IASIP), America's longest-running, live-action comedy series is currently airing its 16th season. While the show continues to maintain its high standards and help people seek escapism in the wild exploits of the 'Gang', it may have added another feather in its cap. Turns out, a fan of the show might have been saved from a health scare after watching a recent episode.

"For weeks prior to the airing of this episode, I had been experiencing confusion, memory issues, insomnia, hallucinations, flu symptoms, and a slew of other horrible issues. I had no idea what was causing it, and my attempts to seek medical help got me nowhere," said the netizen going by the username u/y2k_angel.

In the episode, the gang, comprising Mac (Rob Mcelhenney), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Frank (Danny DeVito) and Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) realise they may have been cursed. While De's face is paralysed, Dennis keeps forgetting things and Frank cracks open an egg to reveal blood inside.

During the 21-minute runtime of the episode, the gang sets about to reverse the curse - but in true 'Sunny' style, creating chaos across the board. However, in the end, the gang realises their bad luck may have been due to mould that had grown on the dead monkey carcass, found behind the bar, earlier in the episode.

"Sure enough, I have now found out I have a severe mould allergy, and cleaning years' worth of mould from her apartment with no protective gear or ventilation triggered a horrible reaction from me, and the lingering spores kept me sick for weeks," the user said. https://www.reddit.com/r/IASIP/comments/151hg8h/the_ending_of_the_gang_gets_cursed_saved_my_life/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=3&utm_content=2 × "I never would have figured out what was afflicting me had it not been for this episode and could have developed a far more chronic illness. I have now moved out of that apartment and am feeling infinitely better." Upon being asked where the mould was growing, the user said, "In her carpet all over her bathroom sink and floor". The netizens were elated for the OP with one noting, "Who knew that Always Sunny, of all shows, would save lives? I’m glad you’re feeling better and that you got out of that apartment", while another added, "It's like how the CPR 'Staying Alive' scene in The Office sticks with everyone." The OP thanked the show and said things may have gotten worse if they had never seen the episode. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
