A strange-looking jet coated in over 17,000 solar panels gave the world a glimpse of the future of flight in 2016. Having the wingspan of a Boeing 747 but the weight of an SUV, it circumnavigated the Earth without consuming a drop of fuel. Solar Impulse 2, created by Bertrand Piccard and Bertrand Borschberg, showcased the potential of renewable energy.

A rise in airfare in spring and summer will hurt the vacationers. As per the latest data, in March 2022, the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers (CPI-U) was up by 1.2 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis as compared to an 0.8 per cent rise in February.

The CPI-U shows that the all items index has risen by 8.5 per cent during the past 12 months which is up from 7.9 per cent recorded in the 12 months through February 2022.

If we talk particularly about the aviation industry, airline fares jumped by 10.7% in March. The report shows that several other transportation-related indexes recorded large increases over the past year. The media reports have suggested that the prices are expected to rise.

Price hikes for gasoline, shelter and food were the key drivers of overall inflation as it posted its biggest 12-month increase since December 1981 in March 2022, as measured by the CPI-U.

Currently, the ongoing Russia and Ukraine war has caused a rise in fuel prices and huge travel demands are also driving up the cost.

US has now charged four Belarusian officials with aircraft piracy, this is in response to last year's diversion of the Ryanair flight. Belarus was widely criticized last year for diverting the passenger flight to Minsk to arrest opposition journalist Roman Protasevich. Four officials who had been charged are the Director general and deputy Director General of Belarus's state air navigation authority.

The words 'Made in China' have negative connotations in India as they often come to represent substandard, cheap products that do not last long and are often not worth the price. Nepal Airlines is finding this out the hard way.

The airlines has grounded six Chinese-made aircrafts saying that it is proving to be unaffordable to fly them. China is known to supply sub-standard equipment that requires heavy maintenance.

Nepal Airlines has repeatedly said that the Chinese-made planes were causing heavy losses ever since they were acquired between 2014 and 2018, and that it wants to remove them to stop further losses.

In 2020, board members of Nepal Airlines took the decision to ground the planes which came six years after the first batch landed in Kathmandu.

In total, there were six Chinese aircraft— 2 MA60 and 4 Y12E. One each were given to Nepal in grant. Nepal bought four in a government-to-government agreement. These included 1 MA60 and 3 Y12E, however, Nepal lost one Y12E in an accident in 2018

One of the Nepal Airlines official told WION that functioning of these aircrafts ‘is and will not be profitable for Nepal’.

“We have been facing technical problems in functioning of these aircrafts. The spare parts are not easily available and repairing aircrafts is expensive and time taking. To run these planes, pilots with specific skills are required which we are short of. There are pilots in China but due to language barrier training pilots in Nepal is not possible,” the official who wished to remain anonymous said.

“We did approach China for help but nothing has been initiated from their side yet. The board of directors of Nepal Airlines hold meeting on a daily basis to discuss on training Nepalese pilots but we are yet to take a decision on that,” the source added.

When the deal was signed, Nepal Airlines Corporation did not have any pilots trained to fly the Chinese aircraft. Six years later, situation remains the same.

“It is a different aircraft which requires different training. Being a rare aircraft, there is a small-scale production of spare parts. The warranty period of many spare parts of these aircrafts have expired. Functioning of these aircrafts is and will not be profitable for us but still we are trying to put one aircraft in use as we are responsible to provide service to Nepalese people.”

Nepal's finance ministry owns the planes which are operated by Nepal Airlines.

Nepal Airlines had bought these planes on loan. Since then, the carrier has been struggling to make payments, especially since these aircrafts have not been fully utilized.

As per the deal, the Nepali government has to pay the Chinese side an annual interest rate of 1.5 per cent and a service charge and management expenses amounting to 0.4% of the overall loan amount taken by the Ministry of Finance. The ministry then charges the Nepali carrier 8% annual interest on the amount of the disbursed loan.

Another official of Nepal Airlines informed WION, the carrier is supposed to pay the loan of US $35.1 million to the Ministry of Finance.

China delivered these aircraft from 2014 to 2018 but did nothing to help Nepal in capacity building.

Another official of Nepal Airlines told WION, if planes are not operating then why should the corporation pay the loan.

In November 2011, when the sale for the aircraft began, technical teams from both Bangladesh and Nepal had visited China to inspect the MA60s and Y12s.

While Bangladesh had deemed the aircraft "not suitable", Nepal went ahead and signed an agreement with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) to procure six aircraft.

China’s new and third aircraft carrier whose technology could potentially rival US could be launched “roughly in three to six months”, a report by a Washington-based think tank has stated after analysing recent satellite images.

In images provided by Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the carrier —which is simply known as the Type 003 —was seen on the edge of completion on October 23, in the Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai.

The CSIS has said that the installation of the carrier’s main external components including the vessel’s catapults, which will assist with launching aircraft, is nearing completion.

Work on other military vessels at Jiangnan appears to have slowed as the shipyard works to fill commercial orders, it added.

Only a few additional items -- such as radar and weapon systems -- remain to be installed before the vessel can slip into the Yangtze River, the analysts said.

The new launchers will allow China to launch a wider variety of planes from the Type 003 faster and with more ammunition.

“The inclusion of catapults on the Type 003 is a major leap forward for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). China’s two existing aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, rely on less advanced ski jump-style takeoff systems,” the analysts said.

“The Type 003’s new Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR) launch system will enable the PLAN to launch fixed-wing aircraft with heavier payloads and more fuel, as well as larger aircraft that have a lower thrust-to-weight ratio. Most CATOBAR systems are steam driven, but it is widely rumored that China has developed an electromagnetic launch system similar to the one developed for the US Navy’s new Gerald R. Ford class of carriers,” they added.

Matthew Funaiole, senior fellow at the CSIS's China Project, said Type 003 would be the Chinese military's “first foray into a modern aircraft carrier.”

“This is a pretty significant step forward. They’ve really committed to building out a carrier program, and they continue to push the boundaries of what they're able to do,” he said.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a roughly Rs 110 billion project by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to create six new Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Indian Air Force on Wednesday.

This is in addition to the Committee's approval of a roughly $3 billion contract for the IAF to purchase 56 C-295MW transport planes to replace its ageing fleet of Avro 748 transport planes, which first flew in 1961.

The AEW&C project, which received an initial "approval of necessity" from the defence ministry in December of last year, is particularly important because Pakistan and China are far ahead of India in this area.

What does AEW&C stand for?

The AEW&C, or "eyes in the sky," can detect and track any flying object in the sky faster than ground-based radars, including incoming fighters, cruise missiles, and drones.

They can also serve as an airborne control room for missions, as well as a monitoring station for ships at sea.

The six will join the IAF's existing fleet, which includes three Israeli Phalcon AWACS on Ilyushin-76 transport planes and two indigenous "Netra" AEW&C planes on Embraer planes.

During the India-Pakistan aerial combat along the Line of Control and International Border on February 27, 2019, airborne warning planes came into clear focus.

In order to intercept oncoming Pakistan Air Force strike formations, IAF pilots depended significantly on backup from the IAF's Netra and A-50 jets, which observed PAF fighters' movements and vectored IAF defenders to attempt an intercept.

Britain's HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier will lead a flotilla of Royal Navy ships through Asian waters on port visits to Japan and South Korea on its maiden deployment, the British embassy in Tokyo said on Monday.

The high-profile visits, aimed at bolstering security ties in East Asia, come amid tensions in the region as concern grows in Japan over any threat posed to neighbouring Taiwan by China.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and US President Joe Biden issued a joint statement this month addressing China's growing assertiveness and the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait following their first face-to-face meeting in Washington since both became leaders of their countries.

Including the Queen Elizabeth with 18 F-35B stealth fighters, two destroyers, two frigates and two support ships, the British carrier strike group will have to sail through the contested South China Sea, parts of which are claimed by China and South East Asian countries, on its way to East Asia. A US Navy warship has successfully tested a new high-energy laser weapon that can destroy aircraft mid-flight.

The Navy, in a statement on Friday, said lasers, which it calls directed energy weapons (DEW), can be effective defences against drones or armed small boats.

Images and videos provided by the Navy's Pacific Fleet, show the amphibious transport dock ship USS Portland executing "the first system-level implementation of a high-energy class solid-state laser" to disable an aerial drone aircraft.

The power of the weapon is expected to be a 150-kilowatt laser. The images show the laser emanating from the deck of the warship.

The Navy, in the statement, did not give a specific location of the laser weapons system demonstrator (LWSD) test, saying only that it occurred in the Pacific on May 16.

The US Navy has been developing directed-energy weapons (DEWs), to include lasers, since the 1960s.

DEWs are defined as electromagnetic systems capable of converting chemical or electrical energy to radiated energy and focusing it on a target, resulting in physical damage that degrades, neutralises, defeats, or destroys an adversarial capability.

"The Navy's development of DEWs like the LWSD provide immediate warfighter benefits and provide the commander increased decision space and response options," the statement said.

Boeing on Tuesday endorsed simulator training for pilots of the 737 MAX prior to resuming flights, a change likely to further delay the aircraft's return to the skies.

The aviation giant, which has been roiled by a nine-month crisis after the plane was grounded following two deadly crashes, described the new stance as reflective of its "unstinting commitment" to safety.

The company previously argued pilots would need only computer-based training, so the announcement was the first major shift in approach since Boeing replaced its chief executive in late December.

But requiring pilots to train on simulators is expected to delay the resumption of commercial flights because of the limited number of MAX simulators available.

Focus now turns to the US Federal Aviation Administration, which previously resisted calls by Canadian and European regulators for the additional pilot training.

The MAX has been grounded since mid-March following the second of the two fatal crashes that together claimed 346 lives.

Boeing and the FAA have drawn intense criticism for their handling of the crisis as well as the process for certifying the plane to fly.

"Safety is Boeing's top priority," the company's acting Chief Executive Greg Smith said in a statement.

"Public, customer and stakeholder confidence in the 737 MAX is critically important to us and with that focus Boeing has decided to recommend MAX simulator training combined with computer-based training for all pilots prior to returning the MAX safely to service."

An FAA spokesman said the agency will consider Boeing's advice during an upcoming meeting involving a board of US and foreign air carrier crews that will help inform the agency's official recommendation before it is opened for public comment.

"The FAA is following a thorough process, not a set timeline, to ensure that any design modifications to the 737 MAX are integrated with appropriate training and procedures," the FAA spokesman said.

Michel Merluzeau, an aviation expert at Air Insight Research, said requiring simulator training would extend the delay before flights resume, but the step was essentially inevitable.

"It's a common-sense decision," Merluzeau told AFP. "It's something that shows that they are being very careful and not taking any shortcuts to speed the MAX's return to service."

US Representative Peter DeFazio, an Oregon Democrat who is leading a congressional probe of the MAX crashes, said simulator training was the right decision but "it's remarkable that it took two deadly crashes, numerous investigations and untold public pressure before Boeing arrived at this decision."

The debate over training requirements has loomed as an open question as Boeing worked on new software to address a problem with a flight handling system linked to both crashes.

The FAA also has raised additional concerns against a backdrop of intensifying public and congressional scrutiny.

Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III, who famously landed a damaged plane on the Hudson River in New York in 2009, forcefully endorsed simulator training in a July congressional hearing, saying "reading about it on an iPad is not even close to sufficient."

A Boeing spokesman said Tuesday there are currently 34 MAX simulators around the world, 26 owned by airline operators and eight owned by Boeing.

That is a fraction of the 387 planes already delivered and roughly 400 additional planes that have been built and stored since the regulators worldwide grounded the MAX in March.

One option that has been discussed would be to conduct training through an updated simulator for Boeing's 737 NG, a predecessor to the MAX.

Southwest Airlines, which has the most MAX planes in service, has three simulators in "various stages of FAA certification, and we expect to receive an additional three simulators in late 2020," a spokeswoman said.

Having insisted that simulator training was not necessary, Boeing had promised Southwest rebate of $1 million per-plane if simulator training was needed, a source told AFP last year.

An American Airlines spokesman said the carrier has one simulator, while United Airlines has one MAX simulator and three on order, a spokesman said.

In December, Boeing ousted Dennis Muilenburg as chief executive and tapped long-time board member David Calhoun who takes over on January 13.

Boeing's share price gained ground on the news and finished up 1.1 per cent at $337.28.

Boeing recommends 737 MAX simulator training before return to service

Airbus has become the world's largest planemaker for the first time since 2011 after delivering a forecast-beating 863 aircraft in 2019, seizing the crown from embattled US rival Boeing, airport and tracking sources said on Wednesday.

A reversal in the pecking order between the two giants had been expected as a crisis over Boeing's grounded 737 MAX drags into 2020. But the record European data further underscores the distance Boeing must travel to recoup its market position.

Airbus, which had been forced by its own industrial problems to cut its 2019 delivery goal by 2-3 per cent in October, deployed extra resources until hours before midnight to reach 863 aircraft for the year, compared with its revised target of 860 jets.

Deliveries rose 7.9 per cent from 800 aircraft in 2018.

Airbus declined to comment on the figures, which must be audited before they can be finalised and published.

Planemakers receive most of their revenues when aircraft are delivered - minus accumulated progress payments - so the end-year delivery performance is closely monitored by investors.

Airbus's tally, which included around 640 single-aisle aircraft, broke industry records after it diverted thousands of workers and cancelled holidays to complete a buffer stock of semi-finished aircraft waiting to have their cabins adjusted.

Airbus has been hit by delays in fitting the complex new layouts on A321neo jets assembled in Hamburg, Germany, resulting in dozens of these and other models being stored in hangars to await last-minute configurations and the arrival of more labour.

Such out-of-sequence work drives up costs and could have a modest impact on Airbus profit margins, but the impact will be largely blunted by the high volume of planes and already solid profitability for such single-aisle aircraft, analysts say.

Still, the problems in fitting complex cabins have curtailed Airbus's ability to take advantage of the market turmoil surrounding Boeing's 737 MAX - grounded since March following two fatal accidents.

Boeing delivered 345 mainly long-haul jets between January and November, less than half the number of 704 achieved in the same period of 2018 when the MAX was being delivered normally. For the whole of 2018, Boeing had delivered 806 aircraft.

Airbus production plants traditionally halt over Christmas and New Year. But the company's delivery centres and completion facilities were humming well into the afternoon of New Year's Eve to allow Asian and other airlines to fly away new jets.
