Challenges with data centres in space as Google launches mini version next week

Industry executives say the current situation reflects a broader structural challenge rather than a temporary supply chain disruption. As AI demand continues to expand, multiple sectors could experience mounting pressure to secure access to critical semiconductor components.

Erin Brockovich, who inspired the Academy Award-winning 2000 film, “Erin Brockovich,” starring Julia Roberts, is pushing for more transparency in the construction of the Data Centres in the United States. Brockovich wrote in a Substack post about the secrecy around the Data Centres and the lack of community input in the buildout. She termed this a “wholesale remaking of the American landscape, town by town, county by county”. This comes as there is massive capital inflow in the AI infrastructure buildout globally, and foundational AI giants like OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX push for an IPO. Many around the world, including Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum, and Financial Analysts at McKinsey, are calling this the “fourth industrial revolution”.
Who is Erin Brockovich?
Erin Brockovich is a US-based environmental activist. She started her career as a paralegal, and despite having no legal experience, she uncovered evidence that gross misconduct and toxic hexavalent chromium were leaking into the groundwater of California. She secured for the residents of Hinkley, California, a $333 million settlement against the Pacific Gas & Electric Company in the largest direct-action lawsuit in history in 1996. The story was later popularised by the award-winning biographical film Erin Brockovich in 2000. Since then, she has gone on to write multiple books about environmental policy and fictional thrillers based on her real-life experience. She continues to advocate for the victims of environmental damage across the country. Also Read: South Korea surpasses India as world's 6th largest equity market
How is she pushing for Data centre transparency?
Erin Brockovich has started documenting the data centre across the US. Her website, brockovichdatacenter.com, is compiling complaints across the US to create an interactive map of all the data centres proposed, under construction or operational. “The single most common concern—more than noise, more than water usage, more than rising utility bills—is the one word that keeps appearing in submission after submission: transparency,” wrote Erin Brockovich in her Substack post. She has received nearly 4000 reports across the 50 states about data centre development in their communities. Brockovich argues that while many communities have welcomed data centres, others do not have information about these secret projects. She argues that if AI data centres are such a tremendous benefit to communities, why are so many of them being built without meaningful community input? “What is not acceptable is the pattern our map documents: projects announced after permits are already secured, developers who don’t return calls, local officials who signed NDAs before their neighbours knew a project was being considered.” Her website cites a number of examples, one of them being Meta’s planned $27 billion Hyperion data centre that is set to take up 4,000 acres near LA, which had not been notified to the communities. Erin claims that such cases are more frequent.Studies by Carnegie Mellon University show that Data centres could raise the average US household electricity bill by 8 per cent by 2030. “Transparency means notifying residents before decisions are made, not after. It means public hearings with real, complete information about energy consumption, water use, noise levels, and effects on local infrastructure.”

AI data centres will pose an immense danger to the world because of the gas power plants being built to power them. According to a report, just 11 data centres could exceed the greenhouse emissions of several countries combined.

A new study has revealed that the giant buildings that run AI, called data centres, are physically heating up the surrounding land, which is affecting more than 340 million people worldwide. As we know, AI uses an ample amount of electricity and also consumes gallons of water. Researchers at the University of Cambridge analysed two decades of temperature data from remote sensors and compared it with the locations of major AI data centres, large facilities spanning over 93,000 square metres and housing thousands of servers. They found that once a data centre becomes operational, nearby surface temperatures increase by about 2 degrees Celsius on average, with spikes reaching up to 2 degrees Celsius in extreme cases. It is nearly the difference between a pleasant Delhi winter morning and a searing May afternoon.
Heat islands
These heat bubbles, also labelled as "heat islands," aren't confined to the area right outside the facility's fence. It was discovered that temperatures were rising up to 10 kilometres away from a data centre, approximately from Connaught Place to Noida's Sector 18. Andrea Marinoni, the lead researcher, told CNN that the planned expansion of data centres "could have dramatic impacts on society" related to the environment, people's welfare, and the economy. This trend is visible worldwide, from Mexico’s Bajio region to Spain’s Aragon, both major data centre hubs, where unexplained temperature increases of around 2 degrees Celsius have been recorded, unlike in nearby areas. The “heat island” effect refers to urban zones becoming significantly warmer than surrounding rural regions due to heat absorption by buildings and roads, along with limited vegetation for natural cooling. Highly populated areas with dense infrastructure also trap heat coming out from vehicles, air conditioners, and industrial activity. Cities can run several degrees warmer than nearby countryside, which creates a literal "island" of heat in the urban areas. As India expands data centres in cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, the resulting heat impact could become a serious concern, especially amid already extreme summer temperatures. "The rush for AI-gold appears to be overriding good practice and systemic thinking, and is developing far more rapidly than any broader, more sustainable systems," sustainability expert Deborah Andrews told CNN News. Also read: Here's why NASA astronauts are carrying iPhones to the Moon on Artemis II
