Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has joined the list of world leaders to contract Covid-19 in recent times. Reportedly, the Japanese Prime Minister developed a cough and slight fever on Saturday, before taking a PCR test, which returned positive.&nbsp;

Kishida, 65, had to depart for a visit to Tunisia but the virus has forced him to recuperate at his official residence, according to a statement released by the Cabinet Secretariat. It is pertinent to note that Kishida is double vaxxed and had a booster shot, earlier this month.&nbsp;

According to local media reports, Kishida had worked till August 15, performing his official duties before taking a short holiday with his family. He was supposed to return to work on Monday but will now be forced to take a break or work remotely.&nbsp;

The Japanese PM, on his trip to Tunisia, was expected to attend the eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) on August 27 and 28.&nbsp;

Akin to several Asian countries, Japan is witnessing a resurgence of Covid cases in the country. Reportedly, 24,780 Covid cases were recorded on Sunday in the capital city of Tokyo alone.&nbsp;

While the hospitalisation and death rates have been low, the rise in cases has made the government rethink its steps to contain the virus. The Japanese economy grew at 2.2 per cent in the second quarter, slower than what the experts had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/japans-economy-rebounds-from-covid-sees-growth-in-second-quarter-506920">predicted</a>.&nbsp;

Thus, making sure that the caseload remains low and the country is not closed is how the authorities may like to proceed.&nbsp;

US Prez had contracted the virus too

As reported by WION, last month, it was US President Joe Biden that contracted the virus. At the time, Biden's physician reported that he had a runny nose, dry cough, and lethargy.

Vice President of Mauritius Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon, Gambia's Vice President Badara A. Joof, Zambia's Vice President Mutale Nalumango and Deputy PM of Namibia Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will be the key African leaders present at the 17th CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India-Africa Growth Partnership.

The event taking place on July 19 and 20 will see the participation of 40 ministers from 17 countries. These countries include Burkina Faso, Congo, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Malawi, Niger, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Sudan, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Togo, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

Interestingly, the Secretary-General, African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Wamkele Mene would also be participating in this year’s Conclave. With its permanent secretariat based in Accra, Ghana, AfCFTA is the largest free-trade area by number of member states population and geographic size.&nbsp;

Key sessions include five country sessions – Namibia, Zambia, Gabon, Gambia, Mauritius, and exhibitions involving 14 missions. Sectoral Sessions will be on areas like Agriculture, Starts-ups, Healthcare &amp; Pharmaceuticals, and IT.

India is the fourth largest partner for Africa registering $69.7 billion in trade during the financial year 2018-19 with investments in areas like oil &amp; gas, agriculture, banking, mining, automotive, pharma, textiles etc. 38 African nations have benefited from Indian govt's Duty-Free Tariff Preference (DFTP) scheme which provides duty-free access to 98.2 per cent of India’s total tariff lines.

India has a historic partnership with the continent and is increasingly engaging with it. Recently it expanded its diplomatic footprint by establishing 18 new diplomatic missions in Africa taking the total Indian Missions in the continent to 47.&nbsp;

The continent is the second largest recipient of India’s concessional loan. Under Indian Lines of Credits (LoCs) worth $12.26 billion, 193 projects have been completed and 66 projects are currently under execution. Amid the Covid crisis, New Delhi gifted 150 tonnes of medical aid to more than 25 African countries.

According to Victor Lopes an economist from Standard Charter Bank, Francophone Africa constitutes 15% of Africa’s GDP and receives approximately 20% of foreign investments that are directed to Africa. Despite all this, South African companies are reluctant to do business in this region. However, this region is too dynamic to be ignored.

The World Bank predicted, that, by 2021, 62.5% of Africa’s fastest growing economies will be in Francophone Africa. Currently, it boasts five out of the ten fastest-growing economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, namely, Côte d’Ivoire 7%, Senegal 6.7%, Benin 6.3%, Burkina Faso 6% and Guinea 5.9%. In the South African context, there is huge potential for mining and extraction of natural resources. It is an emerging mining region with countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali being earmarked as countries that will be leading the mining growth. The region is endowed with vast natural resources: Côte d'Ivoire is the leading producer of cocoa, Mali is the second largest producer of Shea nuts, DRC has the world's largest reserves of coltan and cobalt, and several countries in the region are trying to revitalize their coffee, palm oil and cotton production.

Some businesses are deterred from doing business in Francophone countries because they believe that the political volatility in the region will hinder their businesses. These issues have been taken seriously and addressed, in order to attract business in their countries. According to the 2018 World Bank's annual Ease of Doing Business report assesses that: French-speaking countries achieved especially notable results. The report recognized Togo and Côte d'Ivoire as among "the 10 economies improving the most across three or more areas measured by Ease of Doing Business in 2017/18. There are two major factors that make doing business in Francophone Africa easier. Firstly, the implementation of the Organization for Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA). OHADA is a legal system that has created homogeneousness amongst member states, which has subsequently created accountability and transparency. Secondly, there is a single currency in the West and Central African CFA, these currencies are both pegged to the Euro, and they offer currency stability.

The misconception that France still has a huge influence and is their main trade partner is still prevalent. There are still strong ties to France but, they are diminishing, because the region is globalizing like other regions of the world. Statistics from UN Comtrade reveal that the French share of exports to Francophone Africa has declined steadily from 13.6% of the total in 2010 to just 9.4% by 2017.&nbsp;Moreover, many companies are also increasingly including English as a business language.

However, much of Francophone Africa is largely underdeveloped and lacks good infrastructure. It is problematic to get the resources to market, without the proper infrastructure to process or transport them. Amidst these challenges are opportunities for companies to invest in the infrastructure sector in the region and these opportunities in this region will trickle down to all sectors.

Additionally, the return of African Development Bank (AfDB) to Abidjan from Tunis was an illustration of confidence in the country and the region. The presence of the AfDB has attracted other funding agencies to have a major presence in the region. With the aforementioned information, it is vital for businesses to explore this overlooked economic jewel.

The war between the Ethiopian government and its allies against Tigray, one of its northern states, has led to a humanitarian crisis. Now after over a year of the war, leaving millions displaced and thousands dead, both parties have asserted their desire for peaceful negotiations to find an end to the conflict.
