However, according to a revised provisional list of speakers issued by the U.N. on Friday (September 6, 2024), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is now expected to address the General Debate on September 28.

A note signed by Under Secretary General for General Assembly and Conference Management Movses Abelian accompanying the list said that the revised list of speakers "has been prepared by taking into account the changes in the level of representation (upgrades and downgrades) and reflects exchanges among Member States".

This year, the General Debate of the 79th UNGA session will take place from September 24 to 30.

Brazil, traditionally the first speaker at the debate, will open the high-level session on September 24, followed by the US, with President Joe Biden delivering his current term’s final address to global leaders from the iconic UN podium before his country heads to presidential elections in November.

Guterres is convening the ambitious Summit of the Future at the UN headquarters ahead of the high-level week, with action days slated for September 20 and 21 and the summit scheduled on September 22 and 23.

World leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes.

"The summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future," the U.N. said.

Over 24,000 members of the Indian diaspora have signed up for the community event in Long Island to attend Modi's address.

Puja Khedkar’s case stirred a massive controversy over one of the most sought-after branches of government service in India.

The UPSC perused data of more than 15,000 candidates following the revelations of inconsistencies in Khedkar’s application. The candidates reportedly cleared the IAS screening process between 2009 and 2023.

Meanwhile, the UPSC has reportedly received 30 fresh complaints regarding candidates who got selected by allegedly misrepresenting their credentials following the Pooja Khedkar case.

The UPSC has transferred these complaints to the Department of Personnel &amp; Training (DoPT), according to a report by the Economic Times.

Meanwhile, the UPSC has made changes to its software and protocols to prevent fraud involving name changes. According to the report, the system can now identify name changes&nbsp;occurring&nbsp;between attempts.

According to a report by NDTV, the driver was travelling&nbsp;from Solapur to Pune and made a halt at Hotel Gokul&nbsp;Regency in anticipation of free food.

However, as the driver&nbsp;went inside, he was reportedly stopped from entering the hotel premises. The media report citing the manager said the driver was not in an appropriate condition to enter the family restaurant, dressed in indecent attire and intoxicated to the level where he wasn’t even able to walk properly.

Some men tried to stop the truck driver’s absurd behaviour by throwing stones at the truck, urging him to stop his rowdiness.

The truck driver was eventually forced to stop&nbsp;after the wheels of the truck ceased to move.

Prince Desai, owner of Gokul Regency told WION,&nbsp;“I was out of town when this incident took place. My manager informed me that the truck driver was abusive and extremely drunk. He could have done anything to any other person; he was that drunk.”

“As I run a family restaurant, this is a place where children and families dine. How could we let that inappropriate person enter, which would have made the place unsafe for my customers. I want to state that the hotel is nowhere at fault for not letting the person in, despite what other media platforms are trying to prove. The driver was highly intoxicated, abusive, and wasn’t even able to walk properly. We did what was needed to ensure safety.” Desai added.&nbsp;

Upon being notified of the incident, Desai immediately called 100. A police complaint has been registered, and they are still awaiting further legal action.

The main suspect in the Kolkata rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, has denied any involvement in the gruesome incident during a polygraph test conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). News broadcaster India Today reported citing sources that Roy fled the crime scene as soon as he discovered the dead body at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

As per the report, CBI asked Roy ten questions during the polygraph test. An investigating officer from the CBI and three polygraph test experts were present during the examination, reportedly conducted on August 25 at Kolkata's Presidency Central Jail.

Roy had initially confessed to the crime on August 10 following his arrest but the civic volunteer later took a U-turn and claimed he was being framed.

<h2>What did Roy say during the test?</h2>

Sanjay Roy is believed to have told the CBI that he was not involved in the incident.

"I didn't commit the murder. I ran from the seminar hall after seeing the body," he told CBI during the test.

It must be noted that the results of the polygraph tests are not admissible as evidence in the courts.

Sanjay Roy's lawyer Kavita Sarkar said Roy&nbsp;was asked during the test what did he after murdering the junior doctor. Roy then reportedly told the CBI that the question was invalid as he didn’t commit the murder.

J&K polls: Amit Shah slams Congress for ‘misleading’ people about 'restoring statehood'

Six people, including a civilian, lost their lives after&nbsp;clashes erupted&nbsp;between two rival ethnic groups,&nbsp;majority Meitei community and the tribal Kukis in Manipur, a state in northeastern India, on Saturday (September 07), officials reported. This incident marks the highest number of deaths in a single day since the recent wave of violence began a week ago.

"Fighting has been going on between armed groups of both the communities since the morning," said Krishna Kumar, deputy commissioner of Jiribam district, according to Reuters.

Media reports claimed that the civilian was killed while asleep. "He was fired upon in his room itself," Kumar told Reuters, adding that security forces were sent in to bring the situation under control.

<h2>One dead after militants&nbsp;attack former CM's house</h2>

Militants in India's north eastern state, Manipur launched rocket attacks in two locations on Friday (September 06), one of which targeted the residence of the state’s first chief minister in Bishnupur district. This assault resulted in death of a priest who was preparing for religious rituals. Five people were also injured in the incident.

<h2>First recorded use of rockets in Manipur conflict</h2>

This incident marks the first recorded use of rockets in Manipur since conflict broke out 17 months ago, according to officials. It follows just six days after drones were reportedly used for the first time in the region.

<h2>Rocket&nbsp;fired at the former CM Mairembam Koireng Singh’s home</h2>

As per Hindustan Times, officials said that the rocket was fired at the former chief minister Mairembam Koireng Singh’s home in Moirang around 3:30 PM, using an improvised launcher. The projectile struck within the premises of former chief minister's home, landing only a few metres from his house.&nbsp;

It killed 72-year-old RK Rabei Singh, a priest preparing for a religious ceremony, and injured five of the ex-chief minister’s relatives, including a 13-year-old girl. Earlier the same day, security forces reported a second rocket attack, which hit two buildings in Tronglaobi village at around 4:00 AM.

Mairembam Koireng Singh served as Manipur’s chief minister during three separate terms between 1963 and 1969, passing away in 1994.

<h2>Manipur unrest: Militants adopt new tactics, weaponise drones</h2>

Manipur has seen ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3 last year. Since September 01, the conflict has escalated, with militants adopting new tactics, including the use of drones and rockets.

Chief minister N Biren Singh condemned the deployment of drones, calling them “acts of terrorism” and said that security forces were working to eliminate their use.

In response to the unrest, the Manipur government issued a notice saying that all government, private, and central schools would remain closed on September 7 due to safety concerns for students and teachers.

Meanwhile, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a key organisation representing the Meitei community, declared a "public emergency" across five districts in the Imphal Valley.

“The government can no longer be trusted to safeguard the public. People must now take their safety into their own hands,” COCOMI said in a statement.

Mr. Sukhu on Thursday told reporters that all residents of the state have the same rights and he has respect for all religions.

A health official from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) drowned and died in the raging Ganga River after a diver coldly demanded money before attempting a rescue. The official, identified as Aditya Vardhan Singh, had gone to the river on August 31 with his friend Pradeep Tiwari. Aditya then slipped and fell into the river near the Nana Mau Ghat in the Kanpur district.

His friend hurriedly arranged for a local diver to rescue the health official but shockingly, he asked for an upfront payment of INR 10,000 (US$119). Even though Tiwari instantly transferred the amount, the official couldn’t be saved as it was too late by then.

Excise Department officials in the Indian city of Hyderabad have seized and shut down an ice cream parlour for selling ice cream mixed with whiskey, and arrested several people involved in the act, the Telangana police said on Friday (Sep 6).&nbsp;

The incident came to light when the Excise Department team raided Arika Cafe Ice Cream Parlour on roads 1 and 5 in the Jubilee Hills area of the city.&nbsp;

During the raid, the police seized 23 pieces, totalling 11.5 kg of whiskey ice cream, and registered a case against the accused.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A woman was raped on a busy road in broad daylight in the Indian city of&nbsp;Ujjain on Wednesday (Sep 4). The bystanders, instead of helping the woman,&nbsp;filmed the sexual assault on their phones and posted it on social media.&nbsp;

The incident happened in Ujjain's Koyla Phatak area on Wednesday afternoon. The area is also one of the busiest intersections in the city.&nbsp;

The accused, identified as Lokesh, has been arrested by the police.&nbsp;

The police said that the survivor was a ragpicker, who met Lokesh in the area. He&nbsp;lured her under the promise of marriage and convinced her to accompany him.&nbsp;

He then forced her to drink alcohol and after getting her intoxicated, he took her to a roadside shelter and raped her. After sexually assaulting her, he allegedly threatened her and fled.&nbsp;

The video shot by the eyewitness, helped the police locate the survivor.&nbsp;

<h2>Congress slams BJP&nbsp;</h2>

The incident has triggered political reactions, with Congress slamming the ruling BJP for the deteriorating law and order situation in India.&nbsp;

Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari took to&nbsp;X, and said, “Once again, the holy city of Ujjain is tarnished. Once again, the blot is on Ujjain’s law and order. It is shocking to even think that rapes are now happening in broad daylight in MP — on open streets. This is only possible when the law and govt completely disappear. If this is the situation in the CM’s hometown, then one can imagine the condition of the rest of the state.”
