Zeeshan Siddique, son of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddiqui, who was shot dead on October 12, joined the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday (October 25).

Cyclone Dana updates: The Odisha coast is bracing for Cyclone Dana, which is expected to make landfall near the coastal state by October 25. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port on Friday.&nbsp;

The met department also said that the landfall process will start from the night of October 24 and will continue till the next day. The maximum speed during the landfall is expected to be around 120 kmph, IMD Mrutunjay Mohapatra said. Landfall is a gradual process which usually takes around 5-6 hours, he said further.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, more than 1.14 lakh people in West Bengal have already been moved to shelters as a precautionary measure.

"The remaining people will be brought to safety by 11 am on Thursday," he said.

While asserting that the state is fully prepared to face the calamity, Majhi assured the people that they are in "safe hands".

"Do not panic and stay safe. You (people) are in safe hands," he said, adding that all arrangements have been made for the people at the cyclone shelters.

The Eastern and South Eastern railways cancelled many trains on October 24 and 25, given the cyclone.

The Met warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy downpours in isolated places in the south Bengal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts on October 24 and 25.

Advising fishermen not to venture into the sea from October 23 to 25, the Met warned that wind speed is likely to reach 60 kmph along and off Odisha-West Bengal coasts from October 23 and gradually increase to 120 kmph, from October 24 night till October 25 morning.

Ferry services in the Sunderbans area spread over North and South 24 Parganas districts and also across River Hooghly in Kolkata and adjoining areas will remain cancelled in view of the impending inclement weather, officials said.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has opened a control room at its headquarters here and cancelled the leaves of all essential staff to tackle any emergency.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said it is on high alert and has mobilised its vessels and aircraft to respond swiftly to any contingency over the Bay of Bengal.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said around 300,000 people living in ‘danger zone’ have been moved to shelters. Coastal regions in the state were already facing heavy rain&nbsp;since Thursday morning as the cyclone moved closer to the shores.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in neighbouring Jharkhand state, where an orange alert has been issued for the Kolhan region (West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharswan and East Singhbhum districts).

West Bengal has also evacuated more than 200,000 people ahead of the landfall.

Earlier, flights were suspended to and from major cities of both states.

Teams from the NDRF in both Odisha and West Bengal have been placed on standby. Additionally, rescue and relief teams from the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard are on high alert, reported news agency ANI.

Cyclone Dana: 1.1 million evacuated, flights suspended in India’s Odisha and Bengal ahead of landfall

Two Indian Army soldiers and two porters were killed&nbsp;Thursday (Oct 24) after their vehicle was attacked by terrorists near Botpathri in Gulmarg, Kashmir,&nbsp;close to the Line of Control (LoC), the de-facto border between India and Pakistan.&nbsp;The vehicle belonged to the 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).

The vehicle was on the way from Botpathri when the terrorists launched an attack.

One terrorist has also sustained injury. Police have confirmed the incident in a statement.

The two killed civilian porters have been identified as&nbsp;Mushtaq Ahmed Choudhary R/o Nowshehra Boniyar, Baramulla, and&nbsp;Zahoor Ahmad Mir R/o Barnate Boniyar, Baramulla. Further information is awaited.

Responding to the incident, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti took to X and wrote, “Shocked &amp; deeply saddened by the militant attack on an army convoy in Baramulla in which a civilian porter has been killed. Condemn it unequivocally &amp; pray for the swift recovery of the injured soldiers.”

The attack came hours after J&amp;K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and presented a cabinet resolution advocating for the reinstatement of J&amp;K’s statehood.

In a similar attack on October 18, a migrant worker from Bihar was killed in Shopian district.

The bullet-riddled body of the worker was found by locals in the Waduna area of Zainapora in Shopian.

Sharma added that a patrolling sub-inspector reached the spot and took the woman to MY Hospital in an ambulance.&nbsp;

He said that Sonu was arrested while he was wearing the same clothes as spotted in the CCTV footage.&nbsp;

The suspect, Sonu, was produced before a local court on Wednesday (Oct 23)&nbsp;and was remanded in judicial custody.

According to the investigation, the woman had "walked for about half a kilometre without clothes after being assaulted", a police officer said.&nbsp;

Later, during the investigation,&nbsp;Sonu confessed to being under the influence of drugs on Monday evening. He further said that when he tried to leave, the woman, followed him.&nbsp;

At least 85 more Indian flights receive bomb threats in 24 hours

The Supreme Court on Thursday (Oct 24) directed Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's NCP to use the "clock" symbol in its publicity material in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections with a disclaimer that the matter was sub-judice before it.

Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta and Ujjal Bhuyan passed the order on a plea filed by the rival Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction as it issued a notice to the Ajit Pawar-led faction.

The top court on March 19 and April 4 had directed the Ajit Pawar-led faction to issue a public notice in the newspapers in English, Hindi and Marathi editions notifying that the allocation of "clock" symbol was sub-judice. The apex court had further said the Ajit faction was permitted to use the symbol subject to the case's final outcome.

During the proceedings on Thursday, the bench took note of the submissions of senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for the Sharad Pawar faction. Singhvi submitted that the opponent group should be restrained from using the "clock" symbol as it didn't use the disclaimer in their campaign materials and "misled" voters.

"They have been blatantly not using the disclaimer. They want to piggyback on me. Nobody should enjoy the goodwill of the symbol which is sub-judice," submitted Singhvi.

The top court directed Ajit Pawar to file a fresh undertaking over its March 19 and April 4 directions to issue a public notice&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;"NCP's 'clock' symbol is sub-judice" –&nbsp;was being meticulously complied with even during the process of the state assembly elections.

"File a fresh undertaking as well that you have not violated our directions in the past and till the end of elections. If there is any violation, we will take note of it. We expect both sides to comply with our directions. Please don't create an embarrassing situation," the bench said.

Singhvi said the Ajit Pawar group should be allocated a new symbol for the assembly elections.

Senior advocate Balbir Singh, appearing for Ajit Pawar, opposed Singhvi's submissions and said all pamphlets and campaign materials contained the disclaimers as directed by the apex court.

"They are showing false documents. We have given disclaimers in our publicity material. They came up with the same allegations during the Lok Sabha polls which were rejected. I am willing to file all documents and pamphlets," Singh said.

The matter has been posted for hearing on November 6.

Sharad Pawar moved the apex court against a February 6 order of the Election Commission of India (ECI) recognising Ajit Pawar-led group as the real NCP.

The ECI had allotted the NCP's "clock" symbol to the group led by Ajit Pawar. The NCP, founded by Sharad Pawar, had the "clock" as its election symbol before its split.

On March 19, the top court allowed the Sharad Pawar faction to use "Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar" as its name along with the symbol of a man blowing "turha" ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in the country.

Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Thursday (Oct 24) said farmers will resort to a road blockade at a few places in Punjab for an indefinite period from October 26 to protest against the "tardy" paddy procurement and other issues.

Pandher said the "chakka jam" for an indefinite period will be held at one place each in Sangrur and Moga districts and at Phagwara and Batala. 
 
He told reporters here that the farmers will protest against the "tardy" paddy procurement and lifting, the DAP fertiliser supplies not being adequate, besides over the stubble-burning issue.

He said "red entries" have been made in the farm records of farmers burning stubble and cases slapped on them.

The SCBA also objected to the proposed museum in the erstwhile judges’ library, claiming that it had previously requested a cafe-cum-lounge for its members, as the current cafeteria is inadequate to meet their needs.

“Now a museum has apparently been proposed in the erstwhile Judges Library whereas we had demanded a Library, Cafe cum Lounge for the members of the Bar as the present cafeteria is inadequate to cater to the needs of the members of the Bar. We are concerned that despite our objection raised against the proposed Museum in the erstwhile Judges library, work has started for the museum,” SCBA added&nbsp;in the resolution.

Bar association upset over Indian Supreme Court's new 'Lady Justice' statue, calls it 'radical change'

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday (Oct 24) met with the newly-elected chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir to discuss key issues. According to media reports, Shah assured CM Omar Abdullah that statehood will soon be granted to the union territory, fulfilling a promise made to the Supreme Court of India.

News agency PTI reported that Abdullah, who was on his first trip to the national capital after assuming office, discussed security issues related to the UT with home minister Shah. The meeting came after the Omar Abdullah government’s cabinet passed a resolution urging the central government to restore the territory’s statehood. The resolution was endorsed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The attack targeted a tunnel construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, killing six labourers and a doctor. CCTV footage shows one of the terrorists entering one of the officers’ buildings.

According to sources, he is seen carrying a blue-tagged AK series rifle, which resembles the one observed on weapons used in previous attacks in the South of Pir Panjal region.

“This similarity raises concerns about potential links between the incidents and could indicate a pattern in the armament used by these terrorist&nbsp;groups,” the source said.

The attackers, believed to be two, opened indiscriminate fire on the group, comprising both locals and non-locals.

Two labourers died on the spot, whereas the doctor and four other labourers were pronounced dead later. Five people were critically injured and are undergoing treatment now.

According to media reports, the attack was carried out by the terrorist group The Resistance Front (TRF), which is an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. 2 have been killed &amp; 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people &amp; send my condolences to their loved ones."

In a similar attack on October 18, a migrant worker from Bihar was killed in Shopian district.

Bengaluru building collapse: A seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, claiming life of seven people and severely injuring five others. Officials at the site&nbsp;feared there were a few still trapped under the rubble.

The collapse took place in the Babusapalya area in northern Bengaluru amid heavy downpour. Initially, 20 people were believed to be trapped under the debris.

Two rescue vans from the fire and emergency department were deployed immediately to the site of the incident.

According to a preliminary investigation by a fire department official, the entire building collapsed, trapping those inside.

Saying that the Environment Protection Act had become “toothless,” the court also blasted the state governments of Haryana and Punjab, the two major agrarian states, for not prosecuting the farmers at fault.

The bench of Justices Abhay S Oka, Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Augustine George Masih warned they would take the union government to task over the matter.

"We will take the Union of India to task... it has not created any machinery. The Environmental Protection Act has become toothless. You have got rid of punishment and replaced it with a penalty by amending Section 15, and the procedure to be followed for imposing a penalty cannot be followed," the Supreme Court said.

Responding to it, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati, representing the centre, assured the apex court that the act will be made fully operational within 10 days and further rules will be finalised.

Referring to the Haryana and Punjab state governments, the top court said, “If these governments and you (the Centre) were seriously ready to safeguard the environment, then everything would have been done before amendment to Section 15. This is all political, nothing else."

In the wake of more than a hundred hoax flight bomb threats, Indian government officials held a virtual meeting with the representatives of social media platforms such as X and Meta and airlines to discuss the issue.&nbsp;

According to media reports, in the meeting Union Ministry of Electronics and IT blasted X for the circulation of many of these hoax threats on its social media platform.&nbsp;

The virtual meeting was chaired by Joint Secretary Sanket S Bhondve and the officials said that the situation amounts to "X abetting crime" while asking the representative what steps they have taken to stop control the spread of such rumours.

X was pulled up by the government after Delhi Police was not able to get the ID of the users or domain of some accounts which were found to be posting threat messages to flights.

Eight FIRs were filed by the Delhi Police in connection with bomb threats and the accounts from which these messages were circulated were later suspended by the authorities.&nbsp;

According to the officer, three accounts on 'X' - @adamlanza111, @psychotichuman and @schizobomer777 - were found sharing these threat messages.

"As of now, we have registered eight separate cases in response to threats to more than 90 domestic or international flights operating from Delhi," said a Delhi Police official, while speaking to news agency PTI.

On October 16, the first case was registered after they received a bomb threat for a Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight through X.

"It was suspected that the handler used VPN (Virtual private network) or dark web browser to set up the accounts on X and then posted the messages from more than one account," said the officer.

The government has been mulling some legislative actions to handle these bomb threats which includes placing the accused on the no-fly list.

In the last few days, more than 120 flights have received bomb threats which has caused much chaos for the airlines and the passengers.&nbsp;

A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan directed Rajan to furnish a bond of rupees 1,00,000 ($1189.39) for the bail. Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, popularly known as Chhota Rajan, was convicted and sentenced to life earlier this year for the murder of Jaya Shetty, the owner of the Golden Crown Hotel at Gamdevi in central Mumbai. The gangster had filed an appeal in the High Court against the conviction. He sought that the sentence be suspended, and he be granted bail in the interim. Even though the life sentence has been suspended and bail has been granted, Rajan will, as per news agency PTI, continue to remain in jail due to his other criminal cases. Rajan, already serving a life term for the murder of veteran crime reporter J Dey, is currently lodged at the Tihar jail in Delhi.
