Justice Jagmohan Sinha of the Allahabad High Court delivered a historic decision. He found Indira Gandhi guilty on two counts of electoral malpractice. Her election was invalidated and she was disbarred from the office for six years.&nbsp;

This was a major setback for Gandhi. But, despite mounting protests by the opposition, she decided to fight back. The opposition, led by the likes of Jai Prakash Narayan and Morarji Desai took to the streets. India came to a standstill.&nbsp;

Indira Gandhi moved the Supreme Court against the judgement. A vacation bench gave a conditional stay, while the ruling bench allowed her to stay on as the prime minister. However, Gandhi was not allowed to speak or vote in the parliament, until a larger bench took a decision on the case.&nbsp;

The opposition -- emboldened by its victory in the Gujarat assembly elections -- announced a week-long satyagraha. They wanted Indira Gandhi to resign immediately.&nbsp;

On that day, Gandhi decided to take an unprecedented step. Taking the advice of the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Siddhartha Shankar Ray, she decided to impose an internal emergency.&nbsp;

A letter was drafted that said that there is an imminent danger to the security of India&nbsp;threatened by internal disturbances.&nbsp;

Four members of a family, including a minor, were killed when a speedy truck overturned on their roadside eatery at the Sisaiya crossing early this morning, police said.

The deceased were identified as Badalu (70), who ran the eatery on the Sisaiya-Bahraich road, his daughter Nazima (35) and granddaughters Mahek (3) and Ruby (18), they said.

The speeding truck overturned on their eatery, killing all four on the spot, police said, adding that the negligence of the truck driver is said to be the cause of the accident.

Additional Superintendent of Police East Prasanth Varma, along with Dhaurahara and Isanagar police, rushed to the spot and the bodies have been sent for postmortem.

Maharashtra chief minister on Saturday wrote a letter to the Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, demanding that all banks in the state be directed to expedite the process of disbursing crop loans to farmers.

His letter said that slow distribution of loans would harm farmers during the peak time for Kharif crops and added that the banks should be directed to disburse most of the loans by June-end.&nbsp

"All guardian ministers have been instructed to keep a watch on the process of distribution of crop loans. However, the response from nationalised and private banks is not as expected. Banks are distributing loans at a slow pace despite the arrival of rains," Fadnavis stated in the letter.

"The state government has implemented the historic loan waiver scheme, due to which, a large number of farmers have become eligible for fresh loans," he stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive here today on a one-day visit during which he will launch several development projects.

Modi will dedicate the Mohanpura Irrigation Project in Rajgarh district to the people of the state and also inaugurate several other projects, including an urban transport scheme named 'Sutra Seva" in Indore, a government public relations officer (PRO) said.

The prime minister will land at Bhopal's Raja Bhoj Airport around 12 pm and then leave for Mohanpura. He will then visit Indore to take part in various programmes, the official said.

"The prime minister will dedicate the Mohanpura irrigation project worth Rs 3,866 crore to the people of the state. This project, which includes a dam and a canal system, will benefit 727 villages in Madhya Pradesh," he said.

Thereafter, Modi will head to Indore to dedicate the development works worth Rs 4,713.75 crore at a programme.

He will also felicitate the winners of cleanliness survey - Swachh Survekshan 2018. He will give away awards to the representatives of Indore, Bhopal and Chandigarh, the cities that secured top three positions in the survey, the official said.

Modi will also inaugurate the state government's urban transport scheme named 'Sutra Seva' at Indore's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

This economical bus service -- 'Sutra Seva: MP Ki Apni Bus' -- is being introduced in 20 selected cities of the state.

The Urban Development and Housing Department will make the bus service available inside and outside the cities under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme through private partnership.

In the first phase of 'Sutra Seva', 127 buses will start plying in four municipal corporation cities -- Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Chhindwara -- and in two municipal council towns -- Guna and Bhind, the official said.

The 'griha pravesh' (house warming ceremony) of all 1,00,219 beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana will be performed simultaneously across the state.

The prime minister will also dedicate 23 development projects undertaken at a cost of Rs 278.26 crore in Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Ujjain under the Smart City Mission, the official said.

While patrolling in the general area of Harami Nallah off Kutch district at around 0315 hours, a team of the border guarding force seized a double-engine fishing boat and apprehended a Pakistani fisherman, a BSF statement said here.&nbsp

“The Pakistani fisherman had entered into the Indian waters violating International Maritime Boundary Line for fishing,” it said.

The apprehended fisherman was identified as Mustaq Qadir, a resident of Sujawal district in Sindh province, the release said.&nbsp

“A search operation is still continuing and the entire area is being thoroughly combed. The operation was planned tactically and total surprise was maintained during conduct of the operation to nab the miscreants (sic),” it added.

The BJP’s carping ally said many banking frauds have come to light during the four-year-old tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought to know what action has been taken by his government against those who “looted” banks.

“The economy of the country has been destroyed under the Modi government. Modi wanted to show that he, and not (his predecessor) Manmohan Singh, was the real economist by bringing the rupee at par with the US dollar,” the Sena said in an editorial in its party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

“However, the Indian currency has plummeted to its lowest levels,” it said.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party said banks and financial institutions are engaging in undisciplined behaviour and those who “looted” banks ran away from the country under Modi’s nose. “What happened to the promises of not tolerating corruption and sending those engaging in it to jail?” the Sena publication sought to know.

Citing the recent criminal case registered against Pune-based developer D S Kulkarni for allegedly cheating a public sector lender, the Sena said many banking frauds have come to fore during the Modi regime.

Allegations of wrongdoing have also been levelled against ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and businessmen Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya, said the Sena publication. “Big industrialists have drowned loans worth nearly Rs 1.25 lakh crore. This includes big names and nationalised banks. How many chairmen of banks have gone to jail for giving loans illegally? What strong step has Finance Minister Piyush Goyal taken against those who looted banks?” it asked.

The Sena said demonetisation caused panic in the country and adversely affected its economy. “The country is reeling under financial anarchy (due to note-ban) and it is only increasing,” the party claimed.

“The demonetisation caused a lot of harm to the unorganised sector and unemployment increased. Also, claims that demonetisation would end terrorism in Kashmir proved to be hollow,” the party said.

The flood situation in Assam, which had shown improvement over the last two days, has reversed with two more districts being affected by the rising waters, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Saturday.

Vast tracts of land in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts have been freshly inundated, taking the number of affected districts to six, an ASDMA report said.

A total of 2,22,792 people in 369 villages have been affected in the current wave of floods, it added.

The deluge has so far claimed 24 lives.

The flood-affected districts were Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj, the ASDMA report said.

The three districts of Barak Valley — Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj — have been severely affected by the floods. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is currently on a visit to these areas to review the situation.

Karimganj is the worst-hit district with 1,55,792 people affected, the ASDMA said.

The authorities have set up 142 relief camps, where 27,871 people have taken shelter. Karimganj itself has 133 of these camps.

The floods had also damaged crops over 2,378 hectares of land and infrastructure, including roads, bridges and embankments, the report added.

Flood situation turns grim in Assam, two more districts affected

The Congress on Saturday hit out at the government over the UN report on alleged human rights violation in Kashmir, saying how did it allow the world body to come out with such a report.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, during a briefing here, accused the government of “criminal failure” on the foreign policy front.

“We are very agitated, concerned and worried, (that) how did the UN report on human rights see the light of the day. The prime minister keeps going to address the diaspora across the world. He talks big, comes back and this is what we get,” Khera said.

The UN, earlier this month, had released the first-ever report on alleged human rights violation in Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and demanded an international probe into it, evoking a sharp reaction from India which had termed the document as “fallacious and motivated”.

New Delhi had also lodged a strong protest with the United Nations, saying the government is “deeply concerned that individual prejudices are being allowed to undermine the credibility of a UN institution.”

The Congress had supported the government’s stand in dismissing the UN report on human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, terming it a “prejudiced attempt” by vested interests to hurt India’s sovereignty and national interests.

"The heart reached Fortis at 3:24 pm, one hour and thirty-four minutes after it was retrieved in Aurangabad. The distance covered stood at 323.5 kilometres," Fortis officials said today.

The order came on a petition seeking four months bail for the RJD chief on medical grounds, he said, adding further hearing on the plea would take place on June 29.

The maximum prison term granted to 70-year-old Prasad in connection with the fodder scam is 14 years. The case pertained to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from the treasury in Dumka, now in Jharkhand, in the early 1990s.

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh had on May 11 granted a six-week provisional bail to the RJD president.

Prasad has been convicted in four cases in connection the multi-crore-rupee fodder scam. Another case relating to the scam is pending before the trial court.

His close aide Bhola Yadav told PTI that the RJD chief is at present admitted in Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute where he will be operated for fistula on Sunday.

Yadav, who is the RJD national general secretary and an MLA in Bihar, said Prasad needs to go to Bengaluru and Delhi for some other urgent medical purposes after the surgery. Currently, he is with his party chief in Mumbai.

Adhering to the conditions of provisional bail, Prasad has avoided participation in any function, political or social, he said.

On June 11, the RJD chief's wife and sons--Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav--celebrated his birthday but Prasad was not present, he said, adding Prasad stayed put at the Circular Road bungalow alloted in name of Rabri Devi.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said making agriculture sustainable and profitable should be the top agenda of both Centre and state governments.

"I feel that this should be at the top on the agenda of the government, at the centre, at the states - making agriculture viable and sustainable. This is concerned with the national security. Without food security there is no national security," news agency ANI reported quoting Naidu.

The Vice President was speaking at the concluding session of the two-day national consultation on 'Making Agriculture Sustainable and Profitable' under the Swarajya to Surajya series at the Vaikunth Mehta National Cooperative Institute of Management in Pune.

Naidu said the time has come for a sharper focus on positive bias towards farmers.

"One of the new challenges in the agricultural sector is the problem of plenty. We have become self-sufficient in food grains. However, this has not translated into higher income for farmers. Unless agriculture is made profitable, we cannot attract more people, especially youth, to take up farming," Naidu said.

Many prominent scientists and experts from all over the country were present at the event.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis and former agriculture minister Sharad Pawar among others were present on the first day of the program.

On a similar note, Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week promised farmers a good price for their harvest and low input costs and said that his government plans to double their incomes by 2022.&nbsp

Countries including, EU, Canada, Mexico had then announced retaliatory measures against U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, stating that the U.S. is violating the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In retaliation to US' tariffs, the EU on June 20 said that it will also impose retaliatory tariffs on a list of U.S. products starting from June 22.

The list of U.S. imports worth 2.8 billion euros (3.24 billion U.S. dollars) will now face additional duty at the EU border. It will be imposed on steel and aluminium products, agricultural goods and a combination of various other products.

The additional tariffs on the remaining U.S. products valued at 3.6 billion euros will be imposed later.

State-run Air India will revamp its business and first class cabins on international flights to try to boost revenues by wooing more high-paying passengers, a top company official said on Friday, days after a plan to privatise the ailing airline was called off.

Government shelved on Wednesday a plan to sell a 76 per cent stake in the debt-laden carrier due to lack of interest from bidders, a government official said, marking the latest setback for its efforts to rescue the airline.

Air India, known for its Maharaja mascot, is saddled with about $7 billion of debt and its sale was expected to cement Prime Minister Narendra Modi's credentials as a reformer willing to step away from running money-losing businesses.

The airline, which now plans to focus on finding ways to remain competitive and win market share, also unveiled a new food menu and amenities for passengers and uniforms for its airline staff.

These changes, expected to be introduced over the next two months, could earn the airline an additional 10 billion rupees ($147 million) a year in revenue, Air India's chairman and managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola told reporters.

Air India currently fills only 60 per cent of the business and first class seats on its international flights to North America and Europe and the changes are expected to increase the so-called load factor to 80 per cent, Kharola said at the event.

He declined to comment on how much money the airline had spent on the revamp.

The government is committed to supporting the airline and to making it competitive, junior civil aviation minister Jayant Sinha said, adding Air India was also looking at flying to new destinations in Africa, Australia and North America.

Air India has been losing domestic market share to rapidly expanding lower-cost operators such as InterGlobe Aviation Ltd's&nbspIndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd <SPJT.BO> that are now looking to expand their international routes as well.

PM ignoring Kerala: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

It was conveyed to the Pakistan side that preventing the Indian High Commission officials from discharging their consular responsibilities was in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, and the 1974 bilateral Protocol on visit to religious shrines.

Deputy High Commissioner Syed Haider Shah was summoned and a strong protest was lodged over the denial of access to Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria and consular officials to visit Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Pakistan's Punjab province and meet the Indian pilgrims despite a travel permission from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

"Concerns have also been conveyed at repeated attempts by entities in Pakistan to extend support to secessionist movements in India and incite the Indian pilgrims, and Pakistan authorities asked to ensure that that no such activity is carried out from Pakistan soil," it said.

A strong protest was also registered by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad over the incident, it said.&nbsp;

Pakistan had prevented Indian officials from meeting Sikh pilgrims in the past as well. This is the second consecutive time Pakistan has denied access to the Indian High Commissioner to meet the visiting pilgrims who are Indian nationals.

Both the countries had reached a consensus to ensure smooth visit of their respective diplomats under the 1992 Code of Conduct.&nbsp;

Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974 is another bilateral arrangement between India and Pakistan that aims to let Indian Sikh pilgrims observe religious rites every year in Pakistan without any hassle.&nbsp;

As per reports, Pakistan recently granted visas to more than 300 Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit the country and observe ceremonies and rites on the occasion of the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Gurdwara Dera Sahib, Lahore.&nbsp;

Over 300 Sikh pilgrims from India have been granted visas and are visiting Pakistan to observe the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore, the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi said on Friday.

"A special train arranged by the Pakistan Railways carried the pilgrims from Attari to Pakistan on June 21," it said in a statement.

The visas issued by the High Commission are in addition to the ones issued to Sikh pilgrims participating in the event from other countries, it said.

"Within the framework of the Pakistan-India Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974, a large number of Sikh yatrees from India visit Pakistan to observe various religious festivals and occasions every year.

"Accordingly, the High Commission of Pakistan in New Delhi has issued visas to over 300 Sikh pilgrims from India to observe the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Gurdwara Dera Sahib, Lahore, from June 21-30," the High Commission said.

According to reports, on Saturday, Pakistan denied Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria an entry to Gurudwara Panja Sahib near Islamabad. Bisaria, who wanted to visit the holy site and meet Sikh pilgrims along with his wife, had all the necessary permits for the visit but had to return to Islamabad instead. India has condemned the incident and has already taken up the matter with the foreign office of Pakistan. India today summoned Pakistan's Deputy High Commissioner here and lodged a strong protest over the denial of access to its envoy in Islamabad and consular officials to visit Gurdwara Panja Sahib and meet visiting Indian pilgrims. "Concerns have also been conveyed at repeated attempts by entities in Pakistan to extend support to secessionist movements in India and incite the Indian pilgrims, and Pakistan authorities asked to ensure that that no such activity is carried out from Pakistan soil," it said. A strong protest was also registered by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad over the incident, it said. Pakistan had prevented Indian officials from meeting Sikh pilgrims in the past as well. This is the second consecutive time Pakistan has denied access to the Indian High Commissioner to meet the visiting pilgrims who are Indian nationals. Both the countries had reached a consensus to ensure smooth visit of their respective diplomats under the 1992 Code of Conduct. Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974 is another bilateral arrangement between India and Pakistan that aims to let Indian Sikh pilgrims observe religious rites every year in Pakistan without any hassle.
