After a brief lull, violence erupted in politically volatile Kannur district on Sunday with four CPM workers and three BJP cadres being injured when they allegedly attacked each other, police said.

Police said the CPM men were travelling in a car while the BJP activists came in two motorbikes. All the injured have been hospitalised, they said.

Earlier the police had stated that the CPM men, who were travelling in a car, had been waylaid and attacked allegedly by BJP workers. The car was also damaged.

The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Mattanur and Thalassery. The condition of one of the CPM is said to be serious.

It is being verified who started off the clash, a senior police official said. In May this year, a CPM cadre and a BJP worker were killed in separate incidents within hours near here.

While the left party leader was fatally hacked at Palloor in nearby Mahe, an enclave of the union territory of Puducherry, in an apparent retaliatory attack a BJP worker was killed within hours at New Mahe.

The two killings had shattered the four-month-long lull in political violence involving workers of ruling CPM, BJP and RSS workers in the Kannur region.

In January this year, the LDF government initiated several rounds of peace talks with leaders of various political parties, including the CPM, BJP and the Congress resulting in the fragile peace in the area.

“There are clear signs of turbulence in the present world order. As the representatives of India in various capitals of the world, you should be alert, agile and quick in grasping the causes and consequences of such disturbances,” he suggested.

He also asked the diplomats to be proactive in shaping global position against terrorism, black money and the fugitives.

He ruled that despite the acknowledged need for an Integrated World Order, new ‘walls’ are being erected to curb free flow of goods and services, besides the movement of people.

“This return to protectionism has the potential to adversely impact the global effort for collective advancement,” he cautioned.

"Today, I enrolled my name in the Bar Council Of Tamil Nadu And Puducherry and became the first transgender lawyer in India. I have struggled a lot in my life," she told ANI.

Rajasthan Police, last year, set an example by appointing its first transgender constable following the state High Court's order.

An eight-year-old girl was abducted from her school in Hafiz Colony in Mandsaur and allegedly gang-raped at her house in Mandsaur three days ago.

She is presently battling for her life in the hospital.

So far, Madhya Pradesh Police has arrested two people in connection with the incident.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday condemned the incident and said the accused should be hanged till death.

Meanwhile, locals in the district have been protesting against the incident, demanding death penalty to the accused.&nbsp;

As per sources, all were from the same family. Sources further said that 10 bodies were found blindfolded and hanging from a railing in the house and one was found lying on the floor.

No suicide note has been recovered yet.

Delhi Police have suggested a "spiritual angle" to the deaths of 11 members of a family in Delhi's Burari.&nbsp

Ten members of the family were <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/11-of-a-family-found-dead-at-a-house-in-delhi-suicide-suspected-148169">found hanging</a> in their home Sunday morning, while the matriarch of the family was found lying on the floor.&nbsp

Police said the spiritual angle was suggested by hand-written letters recovered from the site.&nbsp

Police added that the letters bore a "strong similarity" to the manner in which the eyes and mouths of the deceased were covered and taped.&nbsp

The eyes and mouth of those found hanging were covered with cloth and taped. The woman found dead on the floor was not blindfolded. The hands and feet of the children were tied, police said.&nbsp

The deceased were identified as Narayan Devi (77), who was found dead on the floor, her daughter Pratibha (57), her two sons Bhavnesh (50) and Lalit Bhatia (45).

Bhavnesh's wife Savita (48) and their three children — Meenu (23) and Nidhi (25), and Dhruv, aged 15.

Lalit Bhatia's wife Tina (42) and their 15-year-old son Shivam were also among those found dead.

Pratibha's daughter Priyanka (33), who was engaged last month and would have married by the end of this year, was also found hanging.&nbsp

Bhavnesh ran a grocery store on the ground floor of the house. He used to open his shop around 6 am, the family's neighbour Amrik Singh said.

"Today, the shop was not opened till 7am. The milk van had arrived outside the shop. A couple of neighbours had gathered becaused the van driver was continuously honking. Then I opened the main gate and went upstairs. What I saw there left me shocked," said Gurcharan Singh, another neighbour.

Another area resident who had seen the bodies said: "They were all hanging with 'chunnis' while Lalit had a telephone wire wrapped around his neck."

After that, the residents called the police.

The case has been transferred to the Crime Branch.&nbsp

Earlier today, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari visited the neighbourhood.

The family was into plywood business and also ran a grocery store. They were living in the locality for nearly 20 years, residents said.

The residents were in a state of shock after learning about the tragedy. Other members of the family alleged that they had been killed.

Narayan Devi had three sons and daughters. The eldest son Dinesh Bhatia lives in Kota, Rajasthan. Pratibha, who was younger to Dinesh but elder to Bhavnesh and and her other siblings, was a widow and was living with her brothers.

One of Narayan Devi's daughters, Sujata, lives in Panipat with her family.

"I can't believe that they committed suicide. Everyone was so happy. Someone has killed my family and the police have to find them," a sobbing Sujata said.&nbsp

Breaking yet another glass ceiling, a special contingent of about 500 women CRPF personnel has been brought to Kashmir valley for regular security duties and tackle the unruly crowds and stone-pelters, a senior officer of the paramilitary force said.

The women personnel, largely in constable ranks, are based at Central Reserve Police Force recruit training centre in Humhama in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and are being trained in counter-riot and anti-militancy operations.

“This is the newest theatre of operations where women personnel have been brought in. This is the maiden team of women personnel in the Kashmir valley. A few years back, the CRPF women troops were inducted into the anti-naxal operations grid in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand,” the officer told PTI.

He said the women, after their 45-day induction training and combat-stress inoculation, will be deployed in the valley to tackle stone-pelters and protestors, including women.

It was believed that the special anti-riot wing of the paramilitary force – the RAF – could be brought into the valley to tackle violent protests by civilians and stone-pelting incidents but that was not found feasible, he said.

“It was then decided why not induct women to tackle these situations faced by CRPF units in the valley on a regular basis. These 500 women personnel will be deployed in downtown Srinagar and other parts of the valley very soon,” he said.

The women, according to their training officer Manju K, were now familiarising with the topography of the valley, Srinagar town and are being trained to handle “less-lethal” ammunition and weapons such as rubber bullets, pellet guns, pump-action guns and tear gas shells and PAVA shells, a chilli-based non-lethal munition.

They will also be armed with regular assualt and lethal weapons such as the AK-series rifles and the INSAS so that in case of a terrorist attack they can retaliate, take the opponent down and defend themselves, the training officer said.

A fresh lot of body protectors and bullet-proof armour is also being procured for the special women squad inducted for operations in the valley for the first time, the officer said.

It was thought, the official said, by CRPF commanders that with instances of women and girls undertaking pitched battles with security forces and targeting them with stones, it will be wise to deploy women personnel to counter them.

“There are women personnel in regular CRPF and Rapid Action Force units in all parts of the country so why not in Kashmir? The women were inducted into these combat forces with the belief that they are as good as their male counterparts,” the officer said.

Constable Nita K, who is a part of this squad, told PTI she and her colleagues are taking special training sessions to understand the security situation and the response mechanism.

“The focus of the training is to ensure that there is no collateral damage during action from our side and that force is used rationally as those whom we face are our countrymen and youngsters who are misled. Tacking stone-pelters and protestors, both men and women, will be a special task for us,” the trooper from Jharkhand said.

The training officer said the force has started building accommodation and other infrastructure for the women personnel at its camps in the valley and they will be deployed in combination with regular CRPF units working there for decades.

Mobile toilets and troop carriers are also being brought in to aid the female troopers, he said.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday said the Indian economy is set for a surge in the next decade with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) size doubling to 5 trillion US dollars probably by 2025.

While inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here, the President said, "ICAI is celebrating its platinum jubilee just as the Indian economy is set for a surge. In the next decade, probably even by 2025, India is expected to double the size of its GDP to five trillion US dollars."

"The growth in financial and business transactions will mean more work for chartered accountants and place a greater responsibility on you," he added.

Meanwhile, marking the first anniversary of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), President Kovind said GST implementation - among other relevant efforts made by the Centre - has made the Indian society more tax-compliant.

"There has been a sustained effort over the past few years to formalise the economy, enforce rule of law, promote transparency in financial and business transactions, and make India much more of a tax compliant society. The introduction of GST has not been a standalone move," the President said.

"The opening of bank accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana for sections of our people who had hitherto not been able to access banking services the very concept of the JAM trinity the push given to digital payments and non-cash transactions as part of the demonetisation process the institution of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code the passage of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act - all of these are aimed at promoting a transparent and smooth financial system," he added.

The President went on to say that the GST has "enhanced reliance on technology and reduced scope for subjectivity".

"A massive Rs 45000 crore of GST refunds have been made till date - entirely online and through digital banking. About 350 crore invoices have been processed. That is roughly one crore invoices a day. Truly this has been a gigantic tax reform. In the 70 years from Independence to 2017, 66 lakh enterprises were registered with the authorities. In the one year of GST another 48 lakh enterprises have been added," President Kovind stated.&nbsp

However, the tax structure has been criticised time and again by the Opposition for its negative impact on small traders and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Modi government to celebrate 'GST Day' today

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah will undertake a day`s visit to Odisha on Sunday, reported news agency ANI.

The visit comes as part of an agenda to strengthen the party`s voter base in Odisha, ahead of the upcoming elections in the state, as well as the general elections next year, ANI added.

During his visit, Shah is expected to attend meetings at the BJP state office for discussing various important matters. He is also expected to hold a meeting with the party in-charges of the state`s Lok Sabha and assembly seats.

Later in the day, Shah is expected to address gatherings and participate in a social media workshop.

Mild earthquake tremors were felt in parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Haryana and other parts on Sunday afternoon as&nbsp;an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 hit Sonipat in Haryana at 3:37 pm.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in Sonipat, Haryana.

People in the national capital region reported feeling light tremors.&nbsp;

Punjab, Haryana and J&K also felt the aftermath of the quake, a MeT Department official confirmed.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Sunday he will visit Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, on Monday to assess for himself the gravity of the problem.

Guterres said that the United Nations intends to ramp up pressure on Government of Myanmar to speed up the repatriation process.

"We're keeping up pressure on the Myanmar...we need to put more pressure on Myanmar to make them understand what they should do on this issue," he was quoted by the Daily Star as saying during his meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her office.

Prime Minister Hasina's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told media here that Guterres had also said that the United Nations and the World Bank will continue their support to Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue.

Earlier, Prime Minister Hasina apprised both Guterres and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim about the current situation of the Rohingyas and mentioned that these people started entering Bangladesh in 1977.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has given shelter to 1.1 million Rohingyas only on humanitarian grounds and various services, including healthcare, are being provided to them.

"During a Panchayat meeting, I was asked to spit and lick my own spit because my son married a Muslim woman. Panchayat also asked me to leave the village,' the victim was quoted as saying by ANI.

''They said that my wife and daughter should be paraded naked,'' he added.

The media reports also say that he was also assaulted and his the women in his family were threatened with rape.

The police have registered an FIR regarding the case and further investigation is being carried out.

Superintendent of Police of Bulandshahr said, "We have received complaint from a Dalit man who said that he was made to spit and lick his own spit during a panchayat meeting as his son had married a Muslim girl. We will take strict action against those responsible," ANI reported.

The victim&nbsp;has further claimed that his son and the Muslim girl even registered their marriage in the court.

PTI reported police as saying that the five people, along with a few others, were seen getting down from a state transport bus in the tribal-dominated Rainpada village.&nbsp;

Police said that when one of them tried to speak to a girl child, villagers, who had gathered for the weekly Sunday bazaar, pounced on them.

Police added there had been rumours of child lifters being active in the area.&nbsp;

Similar lynchings have been reported recently from elsewhere in the country too.&nbsp;

The transaction was completed last Friday through an e-auction, following a Karnataka High Court order, the source said, adding the jet has been parked at a hangar of the Mumbai airport since its confiscation in 2013.

The deal will go through after the Bombay High Court approval.

"Mallya's private luxury jet has finally found a buyer at an e-auction conducted by the state-run auctioneer MSTC last Friday. The Florida-, US-based firm Aviation Management Sales LLC quoted the highest bid of Rs 34.8 crore and won the bid," the source told PTI.

The department had initially fixed Rs 152 crore as the reserve price at the first auction attempt in March 2016.

In the first auction in March 106 as part of their attempt to recover money from the beleaguered businessman Mallya, who is facing extradition from London now, a lone bidder turned up and quoted a meagre Rs 1.09 crore, against the reserve price of Rs 152 crore. The department rejected the bid and then lowered the reserve price by 10 per cent.

The plane was attached by the service tax department in December 2013, claiming tax dues of over Rs 800 crore from Kingfisher Airlines.

The service tax department was forced to sell the aircraft after the Mumbai airport operator MIAL moved the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the department citing heavy losses on account of the non-productive use of its space. The auction, in the past, had failed as the bids were much below the reserve price, which was cut to USD 12.5 million from USD 22.5 million initially.

The last bidding was conducted by MSTC in March 2017. This January, the Bombay High Court had directed the official liquidator of the Karnataka High Court, who has been in charge of the assets and books of Kingfisher

The teacher in Uttarakhand who was suspended for violating "the decorum" of Janata Darbar session has asked the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat to apologise to her for insulting her.

Earlier on Saturday the Education Minister of Arvind Pandey had already apologised to her and assured a solution to the matter&nbsp;but, Uttara Bahugana said that "Why did State Education Minister apologise to me when it was the chief minister&nbsp;who insulted me?", news agency ANI quoted her as saying.

"Chief minister should offer an apology. I have a lot of self-respect, won't let anyone insult me," she added.

"After watching the full video, people can now see that it's completely CM's fault. He provoked my mother to behave the way she did. I don't think my mother has said anything wrong. Is this the way CM should talk during a public hearing? He should apologise," Shubham said.

"Government did bad things in a big way — demonetisation — or big things in a bad way — GST. The design, structure, infrastructure backbone, rates and implementation of GST were so flawed that GST has become a bad word among businesspersons, traders, exporters and common citizens," Chidambaram added.&nbsp

"Angoor khatte hain," Goyal said in response.&nbsp

"There was no disruption and economic growth was not affected due to implementation of GST. I would like to tell P Chidambaram that 'angoor khatte hain'," Goyal &nbspwas quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.&nbsp

The goods and services tax was rolled out a year ago today.&nbsp

It was meant to simplify indirect taxation. It replaced 17 taxes and 23 cesses with one overarching tax.&nbsp

When GST was rolled out, the government said it would also speed up the transportation of goods by cutting down the need for for toll booths between state borders — since there would now be only one tax.&nbsp

Most countries that switch to a GST tax have seen a 1 to 2 per cent increase in their GDP.&nbsp

But India's GST has been criticised for having five different tax slabs — at 0, 5, 12, 18, and 28 per cent. The criticisim has been that that if you're going to replace a number of taxes and cesses with one single tax, then why should that one tax have different slabs? &nbsp

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has responded to that criticism earlier by saying a poor country like India cannot tax essential food items and luxury cars at the same rate.&nbsp

Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday made his first public appearance in two months via a video conferencing when he addressed the first anniversary of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), India's biggest economic reform since independence.

Jaitley stopped coming to office in early April owing to a kidney-related ailment. He underwent a kidney transplant on May 14, following which the charge of the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs, which he had been holding since the BJP stormed to power in May 2014, was given on an interim basis to Railways and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal.

While he was being treated for a kidney ailment, Jaitley on May 3 chaired the GST Council meeting, his last public appearance.

Since his surgery, he is confined to a controlled environment of his home to avoid contracting infection. He has held meetings with finance ministry officials through video conferencing from his home but had not made any public appearance.

Today was his first public appearance and he looked a bit frail physically but relaxed in a white pinstripe shirt during his 21-minute speech.

In his speech, he said GST has helped in boosting direct tax collections in the April-June quarter of this fiscal.

He also said that as tax collections go up, further rate rationalisation would be possible.

"... The long-term impact of GST and on India's GDP growth, on ease of doing business, on the expansion of trade and business and make in India and honest trade and business centres, is going to be significant. I'm confident that the best of GST in terms of its contribution to society is yet to come," Jaitley said.

During the three months since April, Jaitley has kept himself busy writing blogs on issues ranging from GST to terrorism to imposition of emergency by Indira Gandhi. He was the chief defendant of the government on the issue of rising in deposits in Swiss banks.

 
He even announced the resignation of Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian who had through a video conferencing with him, conveyed his decision to quit.

Besides, Jaitley had defended government's economic policy against the onslaught of former finance minister P Chidambaram and the opposition Congress party. He even wrote about the recent judicial verdicts, amendment to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code done through an ordinance.

He narrated four-year's BJP-led NDA government's performance as well as attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his knowledge and slammed the opposition parties for trying to impeach Chief Justice of India.&nbsp

The death toll in Nainidhanda accident rose to 47. 11 people have been injured in the accident where a bus fell down a gorge in Pauri Garhwal district's Nanidhanda earlier today.

The accident took place when the bus fell into a 60-metre gorge in Uttarakhand at about 9 am, near the Queens Bridge on the Pipli-Bhaun road when the driver lost control of the 28-seater bus which was headed to Ramnagar from Bhaun. 
 
Eight injured people were rushed to nearby medical facilities. Of the injured, four were in "very critical" condition.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand chief minister&nbsp; Trivendra Singh Rawat announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the dead. Treatment of injured will be taken care of by the government, appropriate compensation will also be given to the injured, he added.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the accident, he further said. &nbsp;
