The national capital has been wrapped in an unprecedented security blanket with around 25,000 security personnel keeping a hawk-eyed vigil to thwart any terror strike or untoward incident during the 70th Republic Day celebrations.

Security has been beefed up in the wake of the arrest of two suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) members, who were planning to carry out terror strikes in the national capital during the Republic Day celebrations.

The arrested members of the JeM had identified the Lajpat Nagar market, the Haj Manzil, the Turkman gate, Paharganj, India Gate and the IGL gas pipeline in east Delhi as the potential targets.

Multi-layered security arrangements are in place. Around 25,000 police personnel, including traffic officials, have been deployed. CCTV cameras and face-recognition cameras have also been installed at Rajpath, Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said.

Mobile hit teams, anti-aircraft guns and sharpshooters have also been deployed to keep a watch on the eight-km-long parade route from Rajpath to the Red Fort, besides the nearby localities.

Snipers have been stationed atop high-rise buildings while scores of CCTV cameras are keeping a tight vigil on people's movements on the parade route.

Elaborate air defence measures, including deployment of anti-aircraft guns, have also been put in place to secure the airspace.

Nearly 25,000 security personnel drawn from the Delhi Police and central security forces have been deployed in Central Delhi. The police are also using counter-drone technology to thwart any attack or identify any suspicious flying object, a senior police officer said.

The security personnel have identified vulnerable spots such as crowded markets, railway stations, bus stands and other high-value establishments, and efforts are being made to secure them.

The traffic police have also deployed its personnel to manage route diversions and ensure a safe and secure passage for the visiting dignitaries.
Patrolling in public places has been intensified and checking and frisking at metro stations, railway stations and bus terminals tightened.

Chief Justice of India(CJI) Ranjan Gogoi today reconstituted the Ayodhya dispute bench including Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Abdul Nazeer.

The hearing of the case was adjourned on January 10th Justice UU Lalit had recused himself from the case. Justice Lalit's recusal occurred after senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, appearing for a Muslim party, told a bench that Justice Lalit had appeared for former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh in 1994.

Although Dhawan hadn't demanded Justice Lalit's recusal but he told Chief Justice Gogoi and other members of the bench to step out of the bench.

The five-judge bench will now constitute of CJI Gogoi, Justice SA Bobde, Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Abdul Nazeer. The court will hear the case on January 29th.

The court had directed its registry to go through all the records relating to the Ayodhya case which are available with it and submit a report by January 29 as to how much time it would require for translating the documents and the case material which are in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Gurmukhi languages.

The court had resumed the hearing in the case in 2017 after a break of around seven years.

The court had earlier rejected the proposal for sending the title case for a larger bench and also refused to reconsider its 1994 verdict in which it had observed that a "mosque is not an essential part of the practice of the religion of Islam and namaz by Muslims can be offered anywhere, even in open".

In 2010, the Allahabad High Court had accepted that the disputed site was the birthplace of Lord Ram and had given two-thirds of it to the Hindus. The rest of the site was given to the Sunni Waqf Board.

The order was appealed by both Hindu and Muslim groups in the Supreme Court — as many as 14 appeals were filed — which stayed the order in 2011.

Recently in an interview to PTI, Kumaraswamy had said he would fulfil his Rs 46,000-crore loan waiver commitment to farmers "completely" in the Congress-JDS coalition government's second budget that he is scheduled to present on February 8.

Earlier, speaking to reporters after the pre-budget meeting with farmers leaders, Co-Operation Minister Bandeppa Kashyampur said the Chief Minister had announced a farm loan waiver last time and that he would protect farmers' interests in the upcoming budget.

Reiterating that all eligible farmers would get the benefit of loan waiver, he said it is the responsibility of the government.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking a CBI probe into the murder of a security guard at former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's retreat home at Kodanad Estate in Nilgiris district in 2017.

The PIL had sought an independent investigation into the allegation of involvement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy in the case.

Palaniswamy had denied the charge.

"Heard the counsel for the petitioner and perused the relevant material. We do not consider the present to be a fit case for admission. The writ petition is accordingly dismissed," a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said.

The plea filed K R Ramaswamy alias Traffic Ramaswamy had also sought directions to the state police to hand over the records relating to the Kodanad Estate's robbery and murder of Om Bahadur, home guard of Jayalalithaa, on April 23, 2017.

Seeking a CBI probe into the incident, the plea cited a video, which was shown in a press conference, in which two accused allegedly referred to the present chief minister.

An impartial and independent investigation will not be possible under the state police as the chief minister was also the home minister of the state, the plea contended.

Samuel Mathew, former Tehelka managing editor had on January 11 released a 16-minute video in which the two accused in the case had allegedly linked Palaniswami to the case, the petition said.

Two days after the presser, Palaniswamy also held his press conference in which he had denied the allegations and said that police action will be taken against those who linked him in the murder case, it said.

On April 23, 2017, the security guard of the Kodanad estate, the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa's retreat home in Nilgiris district, was murdered in a robbery attempt by a 10-member gang.

It emerged during the probe that Jayalalithaa's former driver C Kanagaraj and Sayan had allegedly plotted the crime.

A total of 10 people were arrested in the case and a charge sheet was also filed.

India on Friday reacted to the recent developments in Venezuela and stated that it is "closely following the emerging situation" in the country.

The official spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar, said, "We are of the view that it is for the people of Venezuela to find a political solution to resolve their differences through constructive dialogue and discussion without resorting to violence."

"We believe democracy, peace and security in Venezuela are of paramount importance for the progress and prosperity of the people of Venezuela," Kumar further added.

Venezuela is the 4th largest supplier of crude oil to India.

The MEA's reaction came after the United States, earlier this week, officially recognised Juan Guaidó as the interim President of Venezuela and called Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's regime "illegitimate."

In a tweet, US President Donald Trump said, "The citizens of Venezuela have suffered for too long at the hands of the illegitimate Maduro regime. Today, I have officially recognized the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as the Interim President of Venezuela."

Russia slammed "Washington’s unceremonious actions". The Russia foreign ministry in a statement said, " (it is) another demonstration of its total disregard for the norms and principles of international law and an attempt to pose as the self-imposed master of another nation’s future. The United States is clearly trying to apply a tried and tested regime change scenario in Venezuela."

China also reacted with Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying saying Beijing "supports the efforts made by the Venezuelan government to uphold national sovereignty, independence and stability" and it "always upholds the principle of non-interference in other counties' internal affairs and opposes foreign interference in Venezuela's affairs."

The French embassy said the logistics support pact concluded during the India visit of President Emmanuel Macron in March last year came into operation a few weeks ago.

In a statement, it said the visit illustrates, in more ways than one, the continuous deepening of France and India's partnership in the Indian Ocean, guided by the joint strategic vision adopted by both the countries last year.

The Cassard-class destroyer last November successfully conducted a rescue mission when a tanker with an Indian crew was shipwrecked.

During the port call from January 24th to 29th, the FNS Cassard will attend the visit of an EU military delegation promoting the bloc's role in fighting piracy and in providing maritime security in the Indian Ocean through its renowned operation -- EU NAVFOR.

The delegation of European Union military representatives met Indian authorities in Mumbai and New Delhi between January 22nd and 24th to highlight the EU's role in fighting piracy and promoting maritime security in the Indian Ocean through EU naval operation.

"EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta has been deployed in the western Indian Ocean since 2008 as part of the international effort to fight piracy off the coast of Somalia. Through the operation, the EU contributes to international security by upholding the free flow of trade transiting the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin," the European Union said in a separate statement.

EU NAVFOR also provides protection to vessels of the UN's World Food Programme, which delivers vital humanitarian aid to the population of Somalia.

"Working with the EU to enhance maritime security, the Indian Navy on December 24-25, 2018 conducted its very first escort of a World Food Programme vessel in support of Operation Atalanta," the EU said.

As part of efforts to expand bilateral naval cooperation, French Navy's anti-aircraft destroyer FNS Cassard has docked at Mumbai following a reciprocal logistics support agreement signed between the two countries that came into effect recently.

As part of efforts to expand bilateral naval cooperation, French Navy's anti-aircraft destroyer FNS Cassard has docked at Mumbai following a reciprocal logistics support agreement signed between the two countries that came into effect recently. Aparna Kumar, the first Indian woman police officer to reach the South Pole, talks to WION's Ayushi Agarwal about her inspiration (her mother) and the brains behind her expeditions (her husband). Age should not hold you back, she says, nor should gender. But most importantly, she tells Indian women that sports is in no way a male doman. Dream it and do it, she says. Excerpts from their conversation:

WION: How did the idea of reaching the South Pole come to you?

Aparna: The journey actually started in 2013 when I was posted as the Commander of 9th battalion PAC (previously known as Special Police Force in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. It used to take care of high altitudes of Uttarakhand along the Indo-Tibetan border (like Kedarnath, Badrinath and many others). People used to tell me about their adventurous stories and their experiences on walking on snow and pulling their own sledge full of luggage. It really made me curious. I thought of giving it a try as I have been good with sports in the past. The curiosity and my interest made me take the task up.

WION: Tell us about your training for the expedition.

Aparna: I took basic mountaineering course from Manali in 2013. I just thought of learning the basics and didn't have any climbing plans. I was adjudged with A grade, which made it possible for me to pursue an advanced mountaineering course which I completed in July 2014. The course made me eligible for expeditions. Shortly after, my training began. I knew I had to be physically and mentally strong as the task demands a lot of vigour.

WION: Your inspiration behind the arduous task?

Aparna: My mother is my inspiration, she is a very strong lady. Other than her, what adds glory to my endeavours is my husband's support who encourages me a lot.

WION: How did you juggle your profession with this expedition?

Aparna: Its tough, obviously, it is like walking on both the edges of life. As a mother of two, I have responsibilities of both profession and family on my shoulders. But I know how to manage time. My well-wishers, friends, and family have made my life smoother. But when I first thought of climbing, I informed my husband of joining basic mountaineering learning. He just told me one thing that keeps me going smoothly in life which was, ''As an IPS officer, it is your responsibility of completing whatever task has been assigned to you. So you have to complete the whole learning process and do not have to think of giving up at any point.'' This really made my life easier.

WION: What was the most challenging moment in your journey? Had you ever thought that you may not achieve what you set out for?

APARNA: The most challenging moment that I faced was regarding my health issues. When I was getting trained for the South Pole, I was suffering from fever, cough and cold. After a few X-rays and reports, I was diagnosed with pneumonia. I became restless as I had to leave for Chile on 30th December. I was worried and put on medication for 20 days and was given pneumonia drugs. I was asked not to get trained and exercise till then. So the whole month of November was very challenging. The other challenge that I had to face was during my training of skiing. As for the South Pole expedition, skiing is basic and so I had to learn cross-country skiing for which I went to Gulmarg. So before going, it was tough. And when I was in the South Pole, the temperature was around -35 degree Celsius which made the conditions more different as I was the only woman among the seven team members. But this did not at any point make me think of giving up for what I planned for. I was determined and focused. This kept me going in spite of challenges.

WION: How did your family and friends react to the idea when it was first conceived? Did they feel differently?

APARNA: My family supports and encourages me in everything I do. This diehard resolve that I have is because of them. They are the reason behind my physical endurance and mental toughness. Yes, they felt differently as I spoke about my idea but there were no signs of doubt of my determination. What satisfies me a lot is my children's reaction (Spandana and Neelkantha). They jump in joy as I am sometimes invited as a chief guest in their school which expands their friends circle (which sounds so funny).

WION: Who is the brain is behind all your expeditions? And what are your future expedition plans?

APARNA: My husband is the brain behind all my expeditions. Out of seven continents, I have covered six highest peaks. The one which is left is Mount Denali in Alaska, North America which I am planning to climb next year. But before that, I am aiming for the North Pole expedition.

WION: What is the best quote in life that you believe in and which inspired you to climb the South Pole?

APARNA: The quote that I firmly believe in is that "Age is just a number, you should never give up and always work hard in whatever you think and believe in.''

WION: How did it feel, unfurling the ITBP flag at the South Pole?

APARNA: The feeling was inexplicable. I was relieved and glad that I converted my thoughts into actions. Unfurling the flag there was the most immense joy because I represented and made proud those people who helped me a lot during my entire journey.

WION: What is the one message that you want to give women who do not turn their thoughts into action as they think society believes sports is a male-dominated arena?

APARNA: Like I believe age is just a number, so I believe dreams have no gender. My message to all women is to dream, have a vision and fulfil that dream with perseverance by never giving up.

The four-stage PSLV with alternating solid and liquid stages has so far launched 53 Indian and 269 satellites of international customers.

The PSLV with two strap-on configuration has been identified for this mission with the configuration designated as PSLV-DL.

PSLV-C44 is the first mission of PSLV-DL and is a new variant of PSLV.

In PSLV-C44, the fourth stage (PS4) of the vehicle will be moved to a higher circular orbit so as to establish an orbital platform for carrying out experiments.

Kalamsat, the first to use PS4 as the orbital platform, is a payload contributed by students and Microsat-R is an imaging satellite.

In its last mission, on November 29 last year, ISRO had successfully injected India's earth observation satellite HysIS onboard PSLV C43 into its designated orbit.

Lt Bhavana Kasturi, contingent commander, army service corps, will become the first woman to lead an all-men army contingent in the history of India this Republic Day. She spoke to WION on a range of issues — from what she is "feeling" before the big day, to being a woman in the army, to glass ceilings and changes in Indian society.

WION: How do you feel about leading an all-male contingent?
Lt Bhavana Kasturi: It is a matter of great pride and honour. This will remain a history of the army service corp that our contingent was part of Republic day 2019. Not just me, the 2 JCOs and 144 jawans in our contingent are also very privileged... We will be in the history books forever.

WION: Tell us about your experience as a woman in the military?
BK: I think there is no gender bias in the organisation. An officer will remain an officer and responsibility and charter of service will remain the same. We are getting a great opportunity to portray the strength of the army on such a big platform.

WION: Has the glass ceiling broken.?
BK: Absolutely. A lot of changes have come to Indian society. Not just in the army but in the civil world too, women and girls, are doing wonders. I must say, we will keep doing great.

WION: Your message to the women of this country?
BK: I think. I am already a role model, for a lot of young girls especially. I think the only thing I want to say is chase your dream and don't give up in the middle

WION: And how is the josh here?
BK: The josh is high.

A new study by the Indian Institue of the Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune has revealed that the fog formation over the Indo-Gangetic plains of north India is determined by the abnormal air circulation patterns in Arctic and Eurasia.

Cold air coming from the Arctic and Eurasian regions over the Indo-Gangetic plains develops high pressure and further leads to fog formation in the presence of moisture near to the surface.

The fog around the Indo-Gangetic plains commonly develops because of the formation of a high-pressure environment over the Himalayan region.

The study which is based on the analysis of 105 cases of fog events from the period between 1979 and 2013 recorded the daily indicators of local weather phenomena like thunderstorms, fog and dust storms, humidity, winds, surface pressure, rainfall.
