To ensure more participation of women in the electoral process, the Election Commission has made special arrangements in the form of "all women managed polling stations" in all constituencies of the country.

The entire polling staff, including the police and security personnel, in such centres, shall be women.

Braille voter slips and photo ballot labels

Visually impaired and blind voters will be provided with braille voter slips in the Lok Sabha elections due this summer.

The poll panel has decided to fit GPS devices to the vehicles carrying them, facilitating end-to-end monitoring of their movement through mobile tracking.

Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballot System

Electronically transmitted postal ballots (ETPBS) system would be used for the first time to facilitate hassle-free voting.

Criminal antecedents of candidates in media

The Supreme Court on September 25, 2018, held that all candidates will have to declare their criminal antecedents to the Election Commission before contesting an election, saying criminalisation of politics in the largest democracy is "unsettling".

Forty-seven prominent personalities, including Malayalam actor Mohanlal, former foreign secretary S Jaishankar, Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and renowned journalist Kuldip Nayar (posthumous), were conferred<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bajrang-punia-sharath-kamal-harika-dronavalli-conferred-with-padma-shri-by-president-ram-nath-kovind-202562"> the Padma awards by President Ram Nath Kovind</a>&nbsp;on Monday.

Bihar leader Hukumdev Narayan Yadav (Padma Bhushan), former CEO of multinational techno giant Cisco systems John Chambers (Padma Bhushan) and renowned dancer and filmmaker Prabhu Deva (Padma Shri) were also honoured at a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others.

While Viswanathan Mohanlal, Dhindsa and Nayar (posthumous) were conferred the Padma Bhushan, Jaishankar was honoured with the Padma Shri. Nayar's wife received the award from the President.

The Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian awards of the country -- are conferred in three categories: the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri.

As many as 112 "inspiring" personalities were selected for this year's Padma awards and their names were announced on the eve of Republic Day this year. The remaining awardees are likely to be conferred the honour at another function to be held on March 16, a Home Ministry official said.

Other notable awardees include renowned singer Shankar Mahadevan Narayan (Padma Shri), former Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha Karia Munda (Padma Bhushan), physicians Sandeep Guleria and Ilias Ali (both Padma Shri) and wrestler Bajrang Punia (Padma Shri).

This year's awardees are from across the nation, all segments of society and the government has gone beyond excellence alone, recognising larger impact and their selfless service, an official said.

The nomination process for Padma awards was made online in 2016 and a simple, accessible and secure platform was put in place to encourage citizens at large to participate. Erstwhile 'Government Awards' transformed into 'Peoples Awards', another official said.

A record 50,000 nominations were received for the 2019 awards, over 20 times more than 2014, when there were just 2,200 nominations.

The technological intervention has made the nomination process accessible to the people at large and the emphasis of the government to confer Padma awards on unsung heroes, who are doing selfless service for the nation, have resulted into the above transformation. This is reflected in the awardees selected with an eclectic list, covering diverse fields, the official said.

The Delhi High Court Monday allowed a plea by the CBI for taking on record additional submissions in the anticipatory bail plea of former Union minister P Chidambaram in connection with the INX media case.

Justice Sunil Gaur took the submissions on record and again reserved the order on the anticipatory bail of the senior Congress leader.

The court had earlier on January 25 reserved its order on Chidambaram's anticipatory bail plea in the cases lodged by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

In the INX Media case, the CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the media group for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister in the UPA I government.

The ED lodged a money laundering case in this regard last year.

In its application filed through central government standing counsel Ripu Daman Bhardwaj, the CBI said it wanted to file additional submission regarding ongoing investigation in the larger interest of justice.

Earlier, while opposing the anticipatory bail plea, the CBI and the ED had asserted that custodial interrogation of Chidambaram was required in the case as he was evasive during questioning.

The high court had reserved its order and said that the interim protection from arrest granted to Chidambaram will continue till the decision is passed on his plea for anticipatory bail.

It had on July 25, 2018, granted interim protection from arrest to Chidambaram in both the cases and it was extended from time to time.

The senior Congress leader's role had come under the scanner of various investigating agencies in the Rs 3,500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal and the INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore.

It was during his tenure as finance minister that clearances from the FIPB were given to the two ventures.

A trial court here had also on May 30, 2018, directed the ED not to take coercive action against Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.

He was also granted protection from arrest in the Aircel-Maxis case, in which he and his son Karti have been named in the charge sheet filed by the CBI.

The interim protection has been extended from time to time.

Chidambaram's petition had said that though no summons had ever been served on him by the ED in this case, he had an apprehension of arrest in view of the summons issued to him by the CBI, which was investigating the scheduled offence.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, on Saturday, reinforced that terrorism has no religion while interacting with the Indian community here during his official two-day visit.

"Terrorism isn't an issue for India alone. It's an international issue. Even America that never used to understand our pain are now understanding.&nbsp;Terrorism is the enemy of humanity, terror has no religion. No religion whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian preaches terror," the Vice President said.

He also made an apparent reference to Pakistan during his speech.&nbsp;

"We're a peace-loving country. All-time Dick and Harry came and attacked us, ruled us, ruined us, cheated us...But we never attacked anyone because we believe in the philosophy that the entire world is one family...But we have a neighbour who is aiding, training, funding terrorists," he said.

Talking about the recent anti-terror strikes, he said: "Our neighbour is aiding terrorists, an open secret. Recently after Pulwama attack where 40 security personnel lost their lives, four of our Indian Air Force aircraft went to Pakistan, targeted that training camp, destroyed it and came back without any problem within 21 minutes."

Following the interaction, Naidu embarked for his journey back to New Delhi, wrapping up his first two-nation, five-day visit to Costa Rica and Paraguay.

¡Hasta la próxima! After a productive visit to Costa Rica, the last leg of the two-nation tour of Latin America, VP @MVenkaiahNaidu emplanes for a long ride home. Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) carried out infiltrations and transportation of terrorists seven times during 2017-18, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said in a charge-sheet.

“Pakistan based leadership of JeM illegally infiltrated armed and trained terrorists in India using the services of an organised network of Over Ground Workers (OGWs). The investigation revealed that in the period from 23rd October 2017 till September 2018, seven such infiltrations and transportations took place,” the charge-sheet, filed in a court here, said.

The arrested OGWs used to transport Pakistani terrorists after their infiltration in India by illegally crossing the International Border (IB) in Kathua-Samba sector. During the investigation, a larger conspiracy was unearthed wherein Pakistan based leadership of JeM was conspiring to wage a war against India.

The charge-sheet names two arrested suspected terrorists—Mohd Iqbal Rather, and Riyaz Ahmed Nengroo—and one absconding suspect Ashaq Ahmed Nengroo.

While Rather is a Nursing student at Kashmir Institute of Medical Institute while the Nengroo brothers are truck drivers by profession.

&nbsp;A non-bailable warrant is also issued against Ashaq Ahmed Nengroo.The charge-sheet was filed in connection with the incident of firing by terrorists in Jhajahar Kotli area of Jammu and consequent encounter of three Pakistani terrorists in Katra area of Reasi district in September last year.

In September last year, while checking of a Kashmir bound truck, the staff of Jhajjhar Kotli Police Station Jammu was fired upon by three Pakistani terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) sitting in a cargo cabin.

“After the firing, the terrorists ran towards adjoining forest area injuring one civilian on the way. After the conclusion of the chase, the OGWs were arrested and a huge cache of arms ammunition, explosives and combat equipment were seized from the truck in which the three terrorists were being ferried by the arrested persons,” the NIA further stated in the charge-sheet.

A case was registered under Sections 307, 120-B, 121, 122 and 123 of the Ranbir Penal Code and Sections 7, 25, 26, 27 of the Indian Arms Act and Sections 16 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Preventions) Act.

Next day, a cordon and search operation by security forces was on, the three terrorists hiding inside a house in village Dirthi, Police Station Katra, Jammu, started firing indiscriminately at the security forces.

JeM infiltrated India 7 times in one year: NIA

Ending days of suspense and hard bargain, the ruling AIADMK Sunday inked an electoral pact with DMDK led by actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth, allotting it four of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu.

An agreement was signed between the top leadership of the two parties -- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam and Vijayakanth and DMDK Treasurer and his wife Premalatha in Chennai.

Incidentally, the announcement came shortly after the Election Commission announced the Lok Sabha poll schedule. Tamil Nadu is going to polls on April 18.

The AIADMK-led alliance already has the BJP, PMK, Puthiya Tamizhagam and AINRC as its members.

"It has been decided to allot 4 seats to DMDK. In the bypolls to 21 Assembly constituencies, the DMDK will support the AIADMK,"&nbsp;Panneerselvam said.

Describing his party led front as "a mega and victory alliance", he said the constituencies to be contested by the allies will be announced after consultations.

The finalisation of the alliance with DMDK brings the curtains down on days of uncertainty amid reports that the party was seeking higher share of seats.

Several rounds of talks were held between the leaders of the two parties and even senior BJP leader and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, election in-charge of the party, had met Vijaykanth at his home.

The DMDK was expected to be part of the alliance in time for the March 6 election rally addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi near here.

However, it did not materialise though leaders of the two parties had indicated that by the next meeting to be addressed by Modi in the state, the alliance would be firmed up.

At one stage, the DMK too was said to have been keen on a tie-up with the DMDK, but earlier last week it announced the conclusion of its alliance, shutting doors on any more partners.

The DMK has entered into alliance with Congress, VCK, IUML, MDMK and CPI-M and CPI.

By signing the pact with the DMDK, the AIADMK has almost come to the penultimate stage of finalising the alliance led by it in Tamil Nadu.

Already, the party has finalised seat sharing with BJP and PMK and a few smaller outfits for the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, alloting 18 of the 40 seats at stake.

It has alloted seven seats to PMK, five to the BJP and one to Dalit-based Puthiya Tamizhagam in the state and the lone Puducherry seat to AINRC.

The alliance parties have also agreed to extend support to the AIADMK for the byelections.

There are expectations that former Minister GK Vasan led Tamil Maanila Congress may join the AIADMK front, giving the final shape to the combine that will take on the DMK-led alliance.

Asked if there was a scope for Tamil Maanila Congress joining the AIADMK front, Paneerselvam said "a good decision" will be out in a day or two.

"It is a robust coalition," he said adding interview of candidates seeking party tickets will commence from tomorrow at AIADMK headquarters.

The AIADMK which for the first time joined hands with DMDK in 2011 is again tying up with that party after a long hiatus.

Premalatha pledged her party's support to the AIADMK in the bypolls to 18 assembly seats, to be held along with the Lok Sabha polls, and local body elections, expected in May.

Asked if she was satisfied with the number of seats offered to her party, the DMDK leader said "Yes, there is nothing in numbers, it all boils down to your thought process."

She was apparently indicating that AIADMK and DMDK were together in their line of thought.

"It is a victory alliance and an example is 2011 Assembly election when the AIADMK-DMDK alliance had a big win," Premalatha said.

She hit out at the DMK and hailed the AIADMK as a party nurtured by a woman leader late Jayalalithaa. The DMDK and AIADMK were natural allies, she added.&nbsp;

A large group of Pakistan-backed pro-Khalistan activists attacked innocent British-Indian civilians outside the Indian High Commission here on Saturday, possibly as revenge to Indian air strike at a terror camp in Pakistan last month and anti-Pakistan protests that have been taking place across the world.

Wearing turbans, the attackers raised slogans like 'Naraa-e-Taqbeer' and 'Allah-u-Akbar' along with anti-India slogans while targeting the people who were waiting for visa related appointments with officials of the High Commission, witnesses said here on Sunday.

The attackers also carried Khalistani flags.

This attack is largely being seen as Pakistan`s counter to the widespread protests which have been taking place globally against its role in the Pulwama terror attack which claimed the lives of over 40 CRPF personnel.&nbsp;

After Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) claimed responsibility for the February 14 attack, the international community has intensified its pressure on Pakistan to dismantle terror infrastructure on its soil.

In fact, the United States has bluntly told Pakistan to stop providing support and safe haven to terrorists and terror outfits.

India, on February 26, carried out anti-terror air strike at a major terror camp of JeM in Pakistan`s Balakot.

A "large number" of terrorists, including top commanders, were eliminated in the strike, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had told the media hours after the air raid.

India has shared dossiers about Pakistani links to the Pulwama terror attack with Pakistan government as well as several key countries.

India on Saturday sought credible, verifiable and sustained action from Pakistan against terror groups, saying that mere words will not be enough to impress the international community.&nbsp;

"Pakistan will be judged by not the words it speaks but action it takes...The proof of action is not issuing a notification but dismantling infrastructure which should be verified. Pakistan is well aware of its own commitment and concrete action that has to be taken against terrorism... If Pakistan claims to be a 'naya (new) Pakistan with nayi soch (new thought)', it should show 'naya (new) action' against terrorist groups and terror infrastructure on its soil and end cross border terrorism in support of its claims," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Saturday at a media briefing.

Saudi Arabia's minister of state for foreign affairs Adel Al Jubeir will be in India on Monday for a brief visit. The visit, which will be just 4 hours 25 minutes long - according to the schedule released by the Ministry of External Affairs - will see the minister meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

When asked about what will be the focus during the minister's visit, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "My understanding is that he is visiting to discuss some important follow-ups from the recent visit of the Saudi Crown Prince to India."

On being asked if the minister is coming as a mediator in the backdrop of his Pakistan visit, Kumar said, "How did the question arise? In fact, I made it very clear and frankly there has been no offer of any mediation from any country. Not from the Saudis, not from any country that there can be any mediation and I think our position is very clear on that."

Last week, the minister was in Pakistan and met Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan and his foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

There have been a number of high-level engagements between India and Saudi Arabia in the last few weeks. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was in India for a state visit from February 19 to 20. External Affairs Minister met Saudi minister of state for foreign affairs in UAE on the sidelines of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers' meeting earlier this month.&nbsp;

2019 Lok Sabha elections: Check when your state, UT goes to the polls

The Election Commission of India issued a notice asking political parties not to use images of the country's armed forces in their campaign posters and other advertising during its upcoming general election.

The notice followed pictures posted to social media showing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party using images in their campaign posters of a captured Indian Air Force pilot returned by Pakistan after a clash over the disputed Kashmir territory.

The Election Commission said in a notice on its website on Saturday that political parties must refrain from using photographs of defence personnel in advertisements or their election campaign propaganda as the armed forces are "apolitical and neutral stakeholders in a modern democracy."

The commission cited a 2013 order that said photographs of defence personnel should not be used “in any manner in advertisement/propaganda/campaigning or in any&nbsp;other manner in connections with elections by political parties and candidates.”

It called for “strict compliance” with the order.

The pilot, Abhinandan Varthaman, was shot down on February 27 by Pakistani aircraft during clashes between the two nuclear-armed powers that began after a terror attack last month in Kashmir that killed 40 Indian paramilitary police.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack and for harbouring the militants that claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistan denies the charges.

India later attacked a site inside Pakistan it claimed was a militant training camp. That triggered aerial clashes that led to Varthaman's capture. Pakistan released him last week as a peace gesture.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed his release and claimed the clashes with Pakistan were an Indian victory. Nationalistic passions in India have risen since the terror attack.

Recent social media posts showed a campaign poster on a billboard in New Delhi with Varthaman's face alongside Modi’s, along with the words, “If Modi is in power, it is possible! NaMo again 2019!” NaMo is an acronym for Modi.

The elections to legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Odisha will be held simultaneously along with the Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Sunday.

The counting of votes will be done on May 23.

Announcing the poll schedule in New Delhi at a press conference at Vigyan Bhawan, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora said, “There will be no state Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. Only parliamentary elections will take place in the state.”

With the formal announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into force with immediate effect, which debars the use of state machinery, public platforms and any such things for canvassing purposes.

With the MCC in force, the ministers and governments are not allowed to announce any financial grants in any form or promises or lay foundation stones of projects or schemes of any kind; or make any ad-hoc appointments in government, public undertakings, which may influence voters in favour of the party in power.

The term of Sikkim Vidhan Sabha ends on May 27 while that of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Odisha on June 18, June 1 and June 11 respectively.

BJD is in power in Odisha under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, while in Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu leads the TDP government.

Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling leads the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government in Sikkim. &nbsp;

Last year in June, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out of its alliance with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir, following which Mehbooba Mufti resigned as the Chief Minister of the state.

This led to the imposition of President’s Rule in the state. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s six-year term was scheduled to end on March 16, 2021, but the House was dissolved after the coalition between the PDP and the BJP fell apart.&nbsp;

Arunachal, AP, Sikkim, Odisha Assembly polls to be held along with Lok Sabha election

Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel Sunday said he would join the Congress on March 12 in the presence of its chief Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress would be holding its Working Committee meet in Ahmedabad on March 12 and then hold a rally in Adalaj in Gandhinagar later in the day.

However, Patel's plans to contest the Lok Sabha polls, the schedule of which was announced by the Election Commission of India on Sunday, may be possible only if he clears legal hurdles.

He has been convicted and sentenced to two years in a riot case connected to the 2015 Patidar quota agitation, which bars him from contesting polls.

"To give shape to my intentions to serve society &amp; country, I have decided to join Indian National Congress on 12th March in presence of Shri Rahul Gandhi &amp; other senior leaders," Patel tweeted Sunday.

"I would also like to state that if there is no legal hindrance and party decides to field me in electoral politics, I would abide by the party's decision. I am taking this step to serve 125 crore citizens of India," he said in another tweet.

In July last year, the sessions court of Visnagar in Mehsana district had sentenced him to two years imprisonment for rioting and arson which took place in Visnagar town in 2015.

While his jail term has been stayed by the court, his conviction has not been suspended.

Patel has filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking a stay on his conviction by a lower court.

Earlier, on Friday, the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) had given the go-ahead to Patel to join the Congress.

Patel has earlier indicated that he wanted to contest Lok Sabha polls from Jamnagar seat.

While Congress state unit chief Amit Chavda said Patel's induction into the party would strengthen it, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the decision proved that the PAAS leader was a "design of the Congress".

"We have been saying this, and now it has been proved that Hardik is a design of Congress party. His agitation was at the behest of the Congress. He has cheated his community, misled youth. He would get a befitting reply from the Patidar community if he stood for polls," Rupani said.

"Till now Hardik was leading a social agitation. Now when he joins the Congress party, it will strengthen us in Gujarat," Chavda said.

News brief: Big stories of the day

India's national election is the biggest democratic undertaking on Earth, with hundreds of millions of voters from the Himalayas to the tropics casting their ballot in the world's second-most populous country.

Pulling off a vote of this size is no mean feat. Here are some of the bewildering numbers behind polls of this scale from the Election Commission of India:

900 million
The number of Indians eligible to vote. At the last election in 2014 there were roughly 815 million, but just 550 million exercised their franchise.&nbsp;In India's first election in 1951 there were 173 million eligible voters.&nbsp;

85 million
The increase in eligible voters across India in this election compared to 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party stormed to power in a landslide.&nbsp;

15 million
The number of eligible voters aged 18 to 19 in this election. Two-thirds of Indians are under 35.

38,325
Voters identifying as transgender, recognised by India's Supreme Court as a distinct third gender in 2014.

1.1 million
The number of electronic voting machines required for all the ballots to be cast in the mega-election.

1 million
Polling stations to be erected for the election.

8,251
The number of candidates across India who contested the elections in 2014.

3,626
The number of political parties -- though only 1,841 are recognised by the Election Commission.

545
Seats in the lower house of India's parliament, the Lok Sabha. Only 543 are up for grabs in this election -- two are reserved for members of the country's tiny Anglo-Indian community.

186
The number of lawmakers elected to parliament in 2014 with criminal records.

42 million
The amount of dollars seized by election officials from politicians and their supporters for misuse -- including vote buying -- during the last poll. Candidates are only allowed to spend $100,000.

6 million
Litres of alcohol confiscated by authorities during the 2014 campaign. Booze is often used to buy votes from poorer communities.

17,000
Kilograms of illegal drugs seized during the same period in 2014.

It had been speculated that simultaneous&nbsp;polls would also be held in Jammu and Kashmir. Elections, after the dissolution of the state assembly, have to be held in the state before the end of May but Arora said Sunday that polls would not be held in J&amp;K along with the Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;

Arora said Sunday that 900 million people would be eligible to vote in 2019, with 15 million of them being in the age group of 18 to 19 years.&nbsp;

Arora added that a total of 10 lakh polling booths would be put up for the elections (an increase of 1 lakh from the 2014 elections) and that VVPAT machines (used to detect election fraud) would be housed in all polling booths.

Arora added Sunday that the model code of conduct was now in effect.

Among other things, the code bars the government from announcing policy decisions.&nbsp;

Arora said Sunday that 91 constituencies would go to the polls in the first phase, 97 in the second, 115 in the third, 71 in the fourth, 51 in the fifth, 59 in the sixth, and 59 in the seventh and last phase. Elections, after the dissolution of the state assembly, have to be held in the state before the end of May but Arora said Sunday that polls would not be held in J&K along with the Lok Sabha elections. Arora said Sunday that 900 million people would be eligible to vote in 2019, with 15 million of them being in the age group of 18 to 19 years. Arora added that a total of 10 lakh polling booths would be put up for the elections (an increase of 1 lakh from the 2014 elections) and that VVPAT machines (used to detect election fraud) would be housed in all polling booths. Arora added Sunday that the model code of conduct was now in effect. Among other things, the code bars the government from announcing policy decisions. After the chief election commissioner's announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished "all political parties and candidates the very best for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections". Lok Sabha polls to be held in seven phases from April 11, results on May 23

Union minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Goel on Sunday said his party had a direct fight with the Congress in the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi and the AAP will bag the third place in the national capital in the upcoming general election.

"People will vote to form a government at the Centre, so our fight in Delhi is with the Congress. Who will vote for Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP, which has no say in the formation of the next government in the country," Goel told PTI in an interview.

The former Delhi BJP chief, who was termed by party president Amit Shah as the "eighth" Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, is a probable from the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat, currently held by Union minister Harsh Vardhan.

Goel is currently a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan.

"In the coming Lok Sabha election, the BJP will have a direct contest with the Congress. The people of Delhi are disenchanted with (Chief Minister) Arvind Kejriwal. The BJP will again win all the seven seats in the national capital," the Union minister claimed.

His comments assume significance as the speculation on a pre-poll alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress in Delhi for the upcoming polls refuses to die down.

Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit, after a meeting with party president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, had said there was unanimity in her party against an alliance with the AAP for the Lok Sabha election.

Later, Gandhi had also said the Delhi unit of his party was against such an alliance.

Goel said the AAP had conceded that the Congress was ahead of it in the coming polls and that his why party supremo Kejriwal was "pleading" to it for an alliance. "He (Kejriwal) has no option but to go it alone in the polls now as the Congress has refused to ally with his party," he added.

"The refusal of the Congress to go for an alliance with the AAP shows its confidence to take on the BJP. But the AAP, which rules Delhi, lacks even that confidence," Goel said.

An old-timer in the Delhi BJP, Goel was its president in 2013. He was the BJP MP from Delhi Sadar (1996) and Chandni Chowk (1998 and 1999), before being sent to the Rajya Sabha and given a cabinet berth in the Narendra Modi government.

The Union minister claimed that the AAP had "failed" to live up to the expectations of the people after its massive victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls, adding that its leaders had also been accused of corruption.

"The AAP learnt no lessons from its defeat in the municipal corporation election in 2017. People have made up their mind to vote against the party in the Lok Sabha polls, because it has failed them," he said.

The BJP holds all the seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital. Uncertainty prevails over an alliance between the AAP and the Congress for the Lok Sabha polls, but if it comes about, the saffron party will face an uphill task to retain its 2014 tally.

"We should ask questions about whether our jawans should count the dead bodies (after dropping bombs on terror camps) or return safely after carrying out the air strike. BJP workers should ask counter-questions to those who raise doubts about the impact of our air strike," Swaraj said.

Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Saturday dismissed AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi's comment doubting his suitability as a mediator in the Ayodhya dispute.

He said people will keep saying as they please.

The spiritual leader is part of a three-member panel appointed by the Supreme Court to mediate on the decades-old Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute in Ayodhya.

Owaisi had on Friday said Ravi Shankar was "not a neutral person".

"Ravi Shankar had made controversial statements on November 4, 2018 on the Ayodhya issue and threatened that India may become like Syria if Muslims do not give up their claims on the disputed land," he told reporters in Hyderabad.

The spiritual leader, who came on a visit to Uttarakhand on Friday, also talked about the success of his Art of Living Foundation in fighting against drug abuse in Punjab and Haryana and its plans to wage a similar war in the hill state.

He cancelled his visit to Kainchi Dham, 20 km from here, and decided to stay back in Nainital on Saturday.

He also visited Naina Devi and Pashan Devi temples here.

Ravi Shankar said it was his first visit to this region of Kumaon.

Tensions between India and Pakistan flared up after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror group killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel in Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14.
