Pressed further to clarify if talks with Pakistan was an option post the Pulwama terror attack which killed 40 CRPF jawans, Pitroda said that it would be naïve to assume that if some people came here and attacked, every citizen of that nation is to be blamed. “I don’t know much about (Pulwama) attack, it happens all the time, attack happen in Mumbai Taj hotel and Oberoi hotel. Lok Sabha elections: TRS announces candidates for 17 seats in Telangana

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader TTV Dhinakaran released his party’s second list of nine candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The leader also released a list of candidates for the 18 vacant seats in Tamil Nadu’s Assembly.

Considering today’s list and the first list released by the party, it has totally fielded 38 candidates to the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, 17 candidates for the 18 vacant Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.

One Lok Sabha constituency, central Chennai, would be allocated to their ally the Social Democratic Party of India.

TTV Dhinakaran is no stranger in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as he had earlier represented the state as a Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP while being associated with the AIADMK.

He is also the nephew of V K Sasikala, who was the aide and confidant of former chief minister Jayalalithaa. After being expelled from the AIADMK, post the demise of Jayalalithaa and the jailing of his aunt V K Sasikala, he floated his outfit the AMMK (which was not registered with the ECI) and vowed to fight against the AIADMK.

It was in late 2017 that he shot to prominence after winning the prized R K Nagar Assembly constituency, which fell vacant after Jayalalithaa’s demise in late 2016. Contesting as an independent, TTV was able to defeat the candidates of both Dravidian majors, the DMK and AIADMK by a huge margin.

He proved to be a major challenge for the AIADMK when 18 of the party’s MLAs withdrew support to chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in September 2017. However, the Assembly Speaker disqualified these dissident MLAs under the anti-defection law.

A long court battle ensued regarding the validity of the disqualification until it was finally upheld in October 2018. This was seen as a setback to the TTV Dhinakaran because if the MLAs had been reinstated to the house, they would have proved detrimental to the strength of the EPS-OPS led-AIADMK.

Speaking to WION after the disqualification, Dhinakaran said that it was not a setback but just an experience.

TTV’s party gains significance in the upcoming polls as they would be contesting sans a major alliance, but in the constituencies of the 18 disqualified MLAs, they could pose a serious challenge for the bigger parties.

TTV also has a major support base in the Thevar community, which is a dominant caste, that is spread across South Tamil Nadu.

Given that TTV lays claim to the legacy of the AIADMK, the party could cut a chunk of the AIADMK votes, which could in-turn become beneficial to the DMK.

However, TTV also faces a major setback as his party does not have a common symbol and their representatives would have to contest of different symbols, as independents.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will go to the polls on April 18th, in the second- phase of what is a seven-phase election.

This means Sawant has also kept with himself all the portfolios which were earlier with Parrikar. These included departments like home, finance, personnel, vigilance and general administration, among others. Deputy Chief Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, an MLA of the BJP ally Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), will look after transport, PWD, river navigation and museum departments. Another Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai has town and country planning, agriculture, archives and archaeology and factories and boilers departments with him. Sardesai is president of the Goa Forward Party, another key ally of the BJP in the coastal state. Besides the MGP and the GFP, the BJP-led government has the support of all the three Independent MLAs, who are also ministers. Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar (MGP) will look after tourism, sports and printing stationary departments, while Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte heads revenue, information technology and labour and employment departments. Another Independent MLA Govind Gawade has retained art and culture, civil supplies and tribal welfare departments. Vinoda Paliencar (GFP) will continue to look after water resources, fisheries and legal metrology departments, while his party colleague Jayesh Salgonkar will handle housing and housing roard, rural development and port departments. Mauvin Godinho (BJP) will handle panchayat, animal husbandry and protocol departments, while his party colleague Vishwajit Rane retains health, women and child development, skill development and entrepreneurship departments. Milind Naik (BJP) has been given portfolios of urban development, social welfare, while his party colleague Nilesh Cabral will continue to look after power, nonconventional energy, law and judiciary and legislative affairs departments. Sawant enjoys the support of 20 MLAs in the 40-member Goa assembly whose effective strength currently is 36.

US President Donald Trump's administrative official has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the relationship between India and the United States flourished under PM Modi's regime. The official hailed the 2+2 Dialogue between India and the US and expected the ties between both countries to improve after the Lok Sabha polls.

The official said that the 2+2 Dialogue, that took place between the diplomats of both countries last year, took the relationship forward, news agency PTI reported.

Responding to a question on the Modi-government's 5-year tenure and Indian foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale's recent visit to the United States, the official said, "US-India relationship has really flourished since Modi took power. The highlight, I would say, was Prime Minister Modi's visit to the White House in the June of 2017 where a lot of progress was made on the relationship. I would just say that the visit by foreign secretary Gokhale was just the latest illustration of the positive trajectory that the relationship is on".

Talking about the upcoming Lok Sabha election in India, the official said that the United States is looking forward to working together with whoever is elected in the election.

He also added that the US is expecting the ties to improve and is looking for ways of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Jammu and Kashmir: Security forces corner terrorists in Shopian

BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, whose ties with the party appear to be all but severed, Thursday described Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Main bhi Chowkidar" campaign as hollow rhetoric that lacked punch.

Sinha, who is expected to join the Mahagathbandhan comprising the Congress and the RJD besides several smaller parties, came out with a series of tweets decrying the campaign that is meant to be a riposte to AICC president Rahul Gandhi's "Chowkidar hi chor hai" barb at Modi.

"Happy Holi to you, Sirji. Once again I will remind you politely but firmly do not get into the sting of the operations of #Chowkidar. The more you are defensive of Chowkidar, the more the nation will be reminded of unanswered questions about the Rafale deal which the people have been desperate to know," Sinha's tweeted.

The tweet came in his trademark style refraining from mentioning the prime minister by name but dropping ample hints to suggest whom he was referring to.

"By the way, Sir, in a very sudden, unprepared and defiant mood you addressed the Chowkidars of the nation (so-called 25 lakh.. Don't know the basis of this figure, why not 21 or 2.5). May not have gone down well with the people and the chowkidars, whose conditions are not desirable. Most of them live below poverty line," the actor-turned-politician said in another tweet.

"However, Sir, it is not important that you address them in lakhs or hundreds, your rhetoric was quite hollow and lacking punch/content. What was important was to address their plight, enhance their lifestyle, encourage them to live with dignity, better and regular pay scale," Sinha remarked.

"Since you still are our Hon'ble PM of the Nation, I am still with you... However, wishing you lots of love, luck, best wishes and of course a very colourful Holi," he said in his final tweet.

Sinha is likely to be fielded by the Mahagathbandhan from Patna Sahib, the seat he is representing for the second consecutive term.

The BJP has not announced its candidates for Bihar, though there have been unconfirmed reports that its nominee for Patna Sahib could be Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad or Rajya Sabha member R K Singh.

India boycotts Pakistan National Day event

The opposition 'Mahagathbandhan' in Bihar on Friday announced its seat-sharing formula for the 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state, half of which will be fought by Lalu Prasad's RJD and nine by the Congress.

Former JD(U) president and NDA convener Sharad Yadav will contest on the RJD symbol and merge his party Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) with it after the Lok Sabha polls, RJD national spokesman Manoj Jha and RJD state president Ram Chandra Purve told newsmen.

Recent entrants to the 'Grand Alliance' - Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) and Mukesh Sahni's Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP) will field their candidates in five and three seats, respectively, they said.

Former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) has been given three seats.

The RJD leaders made the announcement in the presence of representatives from all alliance partners, including Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Madan Mohan Jha.

Top leaders like Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Kushwaha (RLSP), Sharad Yadav and Manjhi were conspicuous by their absence though.

As per the analysis of the seat-sharing formula, the RJD, which wanted to contest 20, had to part with one seat from its quota to the CPI(ML) Liberation, while the Congress, which had reportedly bargained hard for 11 seats, had to settle for nine with the assurance of a Rajya Sabha berth.

Among other constituents, the HAM, which claimed to have a "stronger support base than even of the Congress" and had insisted on more seats than at least the RLSP, had to settle for only three. The RLSP, which had walked out of the NDA following an offer of only two seats, was allotted five.

The biggest gainer was, surprisingly, the fledgling Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), which was floated by former Bollywood set designer Mukesh Sahni less than six months ago. It got three seats to contest from which is equal to that of the HAM.

Candidates were also announced for the four Lok Sabha seats that will go to polls in the first phase. Filing of nominations for these seats will end on March 25 and votes will be cast on April 11.

These candidates include Manjhi himself, who will be contesting from Gaya, and RLSP state president Bhudeo Chaudhary from Jamui which is currently held by LJP's Chirag Paswan.

The other prominent candidates in the list are HAM's Upendra Prasad from Aurangabad and RJD's Vibha Devi, whose husband Raj Vallabh Yadav was recently disqualified from the assembly following conviction in a rape case, from Nawada.

The RJD leaders also announced that the Nawada assembly seat will be contested by Dhirendra Singh Munna of the HAM.

The Dehri assembly seat, where by-election has been necessitated by RJD's Mohd Iliyas Hussain losing the seat on account of conviction in the bitumen scam, has gone to his son Mohd Firoz Husain.

By-polls to the two assembly seats will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections in Bihar where it will be held in seven phases.

When reporters approached Sharad Yadav outside Rabri Devi's residence, where parleys had taken place for several hours before the announcements, he affirmed that he will be fighting on an RJD ticket and merge the LJD, which he had founded after falling out with Nitish Kumar, with the RJD.

The RJD leaders also announced that the party would give one seat to CPI(ML) Liberation from its quota but did not specify the constituency.

The Congress, they said, will get the first Rajya Sabha seat from the Mahagathbandhan whenever elections are held for the upper house.

The seat-sharing announcement evoked angry outbursts at Sadaqat Ashram, the Congress headquarters in Bihar, as supporters of former Aurangabad MP, Nikhil Kumar, raised angry slogans in protest against the seat going to the HAM.

The agitators alleged that the seat was "sold" by Jha and AICC in-charge for the state, Shaktisinh Gohil.

The Aurangabad seat, known as 'mini Chittorgarh' by virtue of the strong presence of the Rajput caste in the area, has been a bastion for Nikhil Kumar's family.

His father Satyendra Narayan Singh had represented the seat many times before becoming the state chief minister for a brief period.

Shyama Singh, the late wife of Nikhil Kumar, who is a former Delhi Police chief, had also represented the seat.

The NDA has been winning the seat since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

"We reject Pakistan's attempt to politicise the matter. It is being done to deflect the attention from failure to bring the perpetrator of several terrorist attacks in India and the region to justice," the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar in a press conference.

He told Pakistan to take "immediate, credible and irreversible measures against cross border terror without any discrimination."

Acting foreign secretary in Islamabad summoned the Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria after the Samjhauta verdict was announced and Pakistan registered its protest against the absolution of the accused.

Pakistan called it travesty of justice and ''one that exposes the sham credibility of the Indian Courts."

Coming down heavily on Pakistan, the MEA spokesperson said,"There is complete lack of understanding on the Pakistan side as to how our judiciary functions. We have an independent judiciary whose functions are guaranteed by the constitution and it has been acknowledged by the international community. In all the cases that comes up before the court, a due process is followed, same due process was also followed in this case."

Adding that the judgement by special NIA court in Panchkula was "based on the merit of the case and taking into account all the witnesses and material at the disposal of court and we respect the verdict of the court."

India said that despite its request to summon the witnesses in Pakistan, Islamabad did not respond.

In a major boost to the Army’s firepower, four indigenously-developed and manufactured Dhanush howitzers would be inducted into the force for deployment on the front lines on March 26.

The Dhanush gun system is based on the designs of the Bofors howitzer which was inducted in the Army in 1980s and would be the third type of artillery gun to be inducted into the force after the K-9 Vajra and the M-777 ultra-light howitzers.

“The Dhanush guns would be inducted into the Army at a ceremony to be held in Ordnance Factory Jabalpur on March 26 where senior functionaries of the Army would be present,” Army officials said.

The Army has placed an order for more than 110 of these guns with the Ordnance Factory and they would help the force to modernise its artillery which had been awaiting induction for over three decades till sometime ago.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force will induct the first four of its 15 Chinook heavy-lift choppers on Monday in Chandigarh where these helicopters have been deployed.

AF Chief Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa would be inducting the planes into the force.

India has paid close to $ 1.5 billion for 15 of these helicopters which would be also used for deploying troops and machinery at high altitude locations.

Chinook is one of the two helicopters other than the Apache attack choppers for which India had signed deals in 2015-16. The supplies of Apaches will also start by September this year when they start arriving at the Pathankot airbase.

Amid allegations of former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa having paid Rs 1,800 crore to BJP leaders, the Income Tax Department Friday issued a clarification saying its one-and-half-year-old searches yielding "loose sheets" of papers containing "numerical entries" against "some individual names" appear to be doubtful as the originals are not available.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in a statement said it had recovered "xerox copy" of "diary pages" of Karnataka Legislative Assembly of 2009 from Congress leader D K Shivakumar during a search action on August 2, 2017.

Shivakumar in a statement to the tax department stated that these were "a copy of the diary, written by B S Yeddyurappa, and the payments paid on behalf of B S Yeddyurappa to legislators and received from various leaders, MLAs, Ministers when they were in power," it said.

The Caravan magazine reported that the recipients of the funds include Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari as well as the BJP Central Committee members and state legislators.

While no immediate comments were available from the three ministers, Yeddyurappa rubbished the allegations as "atrocious and malicious". The BJP's Karnataka unit also tweeted to deny the claim, saying the "handwriting & the signature on the dairy released by @INCIndia is as fake as the diary itself."

Yeddyurappa in a statement recorded with the tax department in November 2017 had denied writing any such diary entry and said that the copies did not contain his handwriting or signatures, according to CBDT.

CBDT, which comes under Jaitley, in the statement said the loose sheets were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad for an analysis but the laboratory after carrying out an examination of handwriting and signatures stated that it needed originals.

"No originals were given by Shivakumar," the statement said. "It is clear that for a forensic analysis of the disputed writings to establish its evidentiary value, originals of the same are required."

The tax department said details about the place and custody of the original writings and "if the original writings exist, are not available."

"The same loose sheets prima-facie appear to be of a doubtful nature and were given by the person who was being raided for tax violations," it added.
CBDT said it had carried out a search on Shivakumar and others on August 2, 2017 and "a large evidence of incriminating material against" him and his company were found.

It further stated that Shivakumar in his statement to the tax department on October 19, 2017 "stated that this was a copy of a diary, written by Mr BS Yeddyurappa, and the payments paid on behalf of Mr BS Yeddyurappa to legislators and received from various leaders, MLAs, Ministers when they were in power."

He, however, did not disclose the source of information, it said.

"He also stated that he did not know the time period in which the said transactions have taken place and he did not have the originals of the said loose sheets."

The department said on being asked why he had not brought this to the notice of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) or Lokayukta of Karnataka, "Shivakumar stated that as he did not know about the genuineness of the said loose sheets, he did not inform the same to enforcement agencies."

"He further stated that the handwriting in the loose sheets could be of Mr BS Yeddyurappa on the basis of comparison between various documents written by Mr BS Yeddyurappa and the handwriting in the loose sheets," it said.

Yeddyurappa in his statement to the tax department on November 25, 2017 stated that he was not in the habit of writing a diary and "that the loose sheets in question were not in his handwriting," the statement said. "He denied his handwriting and signatures on the loose sheets."

"He further stated that contents of the loose sheets were false and fabricated and his name has been used to malign his political career," it said. "He also provided a sample of his handwriting in order to verify the genuineness of the said loose sheets. Further, he also stated that the fabricated loose sheets were politically motivated with an intention to tarnish his political image."

Karnataka Transport Department on Friday suspended the aggregator licence given to Ani technologies to run Ola cabs.

The transport department suspended the licence after Ola started bike taxi service without approval.

The licence was suspended for six months as Ola did not respond to the transport department's notice over operating bike taxis.

A few bikes belong to the company have also been seized.

Meanwhile, Ola in a statement said that the company was evaluating all options to find an amicable solution to the issue.

"Ola is a law-abiding company that has always worked with the Government to develop livelihoods, improve mobility, and enable a new technology industry. We are evaluating all options to find an amicable solution wherein hundreds of thousands of driver-partners in the state of Karnataka can continue to work and serve the mobility needs of our citizens.''

''We have been closely working with the authorities on this topic, responding to queries and making proactive representations to the ministry. Despite other companies continuing to operate illegally, Ola halted our bike taxi experiment weeks ago, instead of seeking the state’s cooperation to develop a legal framework for a pilot that will continue to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the mobility economy,'' the statement added.

Describing the notification ''unfortunate'', Ola said ''We look forward to an opportunity to address these concerns directly with state officials to find a solution for our driver-partners and millions of Ola users in Karnataka."
