India’s one of the largest book markets - College Street in Kolkata opens today only to witness the trail of devastation left behind Cyclone Amphan.

College Street - popularly known as ‘Boi Para’ in Kolkata is home to small, big book stores and roadside stalls selling new, old, second hand and rare collection of books.

But, nature’s fury has hit the booksellers of College Street hard. The booksellers had been suffering massive losses due to the lockdown in the last two months. Now, just days before the Bengal government allowed them to open shops, they were hit by the Cyclone Amphan.

For Suren Banik, who set up his shop in 1971, he has neither seen such devastation nor had he anticipated the same. Today, when Banik reached his shop he saw books strewn on the road.

“I have never seen such devastation in my life. I have been selling books here for more than 50 years. The winds were so strong that books flew out of my shop. All the books that you see now on the road belong to me and the adjacent book store. The books are completely ravaged. We can’t sell them anymore. I have suffered losses to the tune of Rs.50,000. It will take at least two years for me to turn around this present situation,” said Banik.

On last Wednesday, when Cyclone Amphan hit the coast of West Bengal, it left behind a trail of devastation and deaths across the state. As many as 86 people lost their lives in Cyclone Amphan.

Since the transport services were not available in the city, the booksellers could not reach the shops to either take away their stock or take any precautionary measures to protect their shops.

A day after when they reached the shops, they saw books floating in a pool of water caused by the heavy rains due to the cyclone.

For Moloy Guha, the losses are even more. The Cyclone Amphan not just washed away major stock of his books but also left his shop damaged.

“A tree fell on my shop. The roof of the shop has been completely damaged. My book stock which was kept on the lower shelf has been destroyed. I have to now get my shop repaired today as the roof has been damaged due to an uprooted tree falling on my shop,” said Guha.

The booksellers who are left in the lurch are now requesting the state government to help them financially recover from the losses.

According to popular beliefs, one will always find a book of its choice at College Street. Located next to the iconic Indian Coffee House, people of Bengal take great pride in the city’s one of the prized possession - College Street.

As if the ongoing Covid-19 wasn't bad enough nature is unleashing its fury in several ways. Swarms of locusts have descended over parts of northwest and central India, threatening standing crops, even as farmers continue to face the impact of the national lockdown in place to contain the spread of coronavirus.

On Monday, Huge swarms of locusts entered Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur as the pests spread to wider parts of Rajasthan along with Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.

Authorities have started spraying chemicals on crops and plants where the insects have been located. Central agencies in this field had alerted the farmers about the locust attack and necessary information had been passed on to villagers as well.

According to the experts, a swarm does not travel in the night. The migratory pests travel during the day time and fly as per the wind direction.

India has witnessed several locust plagues and upsurges from 1812 to 1997, but there has not been any major locust upsurge since 2011. The insects are known to originate in Arabian Peninsula and invade India via Rajasthan-Pakistan border, just before the onset of the seasonal monsoon.

There is consensus that the desert locust could pose a grave challenge in 2020. Thousands of acres of crops could be destroyed by locusts and at a time when the global economy is struggling to recover after the COVID-19 crisis, this is the last problem that the region needs to deal with.

Watch: India suffers worst locust swarm attack in decades; alert in Delhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Modi government on the issue of lifting lockdown when infection rates are soaring across the country.

Gandhi said that the Centre has failed in implementing all four versions of lockdown and should come out with a solution as to what the government intends to do now.

He also said that he has been meeting daily wage labourers and most of them told him that they have lost faith in the government.

In his press conference, Gandhi once again pushed the point that economic package has not worked, and state governments are not being supported by the centre in combating the pandemic.

“Even PM would accept that the plan of the government failed but now he should tell us the way out. PM has gone in a low-key position and is absent from the scene,” said Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul said that he would like the prime minister to acquire centre stage again.

Congress has taken a strong stand on the issue of migrant workers and cornered the government multiple time on this issue. The lifting of lockdown has witnessed a lot of teething problems and a haphazard opening up could lead to second wave.

Gandhi also said that the states cannot function in isolation. When asked about Maharashtra, he said,” Connected states will face the brunt more than far off areas. Then one also has to account for the fact that there is a difference between running the government and supporting the government,” he said.

Speaking on the issue of China, Rahul Gandhi said that the government must share facts with the nation. He also welcomed that Centre did give the right to the state governments for zoning and decision making at the local level.

Gandhi said that the reason why the Congress Party made the film on migrants was to showcase the problems faced by the migrant workers and the message needed to be sent across.

India is undergoing fourth stage of lockdown and also simultaneously opening up. There is definitely an absence of a coordinated action amongst states and Congress insiders feel that it is the best way to pin Narendra Modi down as issues related to MSMEs and migrant labour issue has not been addressed properly by Modi government.

There have been reports of multiple incidents of transgressions by Chinese troops in several areas in Eastern Ladakh in the last one week, and soldiers from India and China were involved in scuffles on at least two occasions, authoritative sources said.

It is learnt that the Chinese army forcefully stopped movement of Indian troops on several occasions when they were carrying out patrolling in Pangong Tso lake area this week.

Amid the escalating tension, Army Chief Gen MM Naravane paid a quiet visit to the headquarters of 14 Corps in Leh on Friday and reviewed with the top commanders the overall security scenario in the region including in the disputed areas along the LAC, the de-facto border between India and China.

The sources said the Indian Army has been matching up to the Chinese build-up in both Pangong Tso lake and Galwan Valley and that it is in a much advantageous position in certain other sensitive areas in the region.

The Indian troops are also resorting to "aggressive patrolling" in several sensitive areas including Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldi, they said.

The situation in Eastern Ladakh deteriorated after around 250 Chinese and Indian soldiers were engaged in a violent face-off on the evening of May 5 which spilled over to the next day before the two sides agreed to "disengage" following a meeting at the level of local commanders.

Over 100 Indian and Chinese soldiers were injured in the violence.

The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in North Sikkim on May 9.

In the last one week, local commanders of both the sides held at least five meetings during which the Indian side took strong note of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) erecting a large numbers of tents in areas in Galwan Valley which India felt belonged to its side of the LAC, the sources said.

India on Thursday said the Chinese military was hindering normal patrolling by its troops and asserted that India has always taken a very responsible approach towards border management.

In a separate incident, nearly 150 Indian and Chinese military personnel were engaged in a face-off near Naku La Pass in the Sikkim sector on May 9.

At least 10 soldiers from both sides sustained injuries.

The troops of India and China were engaged in a 73-day stand-off in Doklam tri-junction in 2017 which even triggered fears of a war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long LAC. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet while India contests it.

Both sides have been asserting that pending the final resolution of the boundary issue, it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas.

China has been critical of India's reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, and has particularly criticised New Delhi for making Ladakh a union territory. China lays claim over several parts of Ladakh. Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and parts of Uttar Pradesh have been experiencing blistering heat for days with temperatures soaring over 45 degrees Celsius in some places.

The highest day temperature in Rajasthan on Monday was recorded in Churu at 47.5 degrees Celsius, while Allahabad was the hottest place in Uttar Pradesh at 46.3 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature was 44 degrees Celsius in the national capital.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the Regional Meteorological Department of the IMD, said on Monday that due to a western disturbance and easterly winds, dust storm and thunderstorm activity is likely over Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on May 29-30.

The wind speed is also likely to be around 50-60 kilometres per hour during this period, Srivastava said, adding that this will bring relief from the intense heat.

A western disturbance is a cyclonic storm that originates in the Mediterranean Sea and travels across Central Asia. When it comes in contact with the Himalayas, it brings rains to the hills and the plains.

Heat wave conditions over some parts and severe heat wave conditions at isolated pockets are very likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha during May 25-27, the IMD said in its daily bulletin.

Heat wave conditions are also likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, interior Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and Jharkhand during next 2-3 days.

Due to prevailing dry north-westerly winds over plains of northwest India, central India and adjoining interior parts of eastern India, present heatwave conditions very likely to continue to prevail over these areas till May 28 with peak intensity on May 25 and 26, the IMD said in its daily bulletin.

For the plains, a heatwave is declared when the actual maximum temperature is 45 degrees Celsius and severe heatwave when it is 47 degrees Celsius or above.

The IMD issues colour-coded warnings depending on the intensity of any weather system in ascending order - green, yellow, orange and red.
The red warning has been issued to caution people not to step out from 1 PM to 5 PM, when the intensity of the heat is the most, according to an IMD official.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said that four out of the 14 coronavirus vaccine candidates from India may enter the clinical trial stage in the next three-five months.

In an online chat with BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao, Vardhan said the entire world was working on developing a vaccine to stop the novel coronavirus pandemic.

"There are more than 100 candidates for developing a vaccine working at different levels. The WHO is coordinating the efforts," the health minister was quoted as saying.

"India is also actively contributing to that effort. We have 14 vaccine candidates that are working on different levels," he said. "Industry, the academic world is contributing to it and our Ministry of Science is helping the Department of Biotechnology in all such efforts."

Financial support and regulatory clearance will be provided to those who are working on this, Vardhan said.

"Out of these 14, four vaccine candidates, in the next three-five months, may enter the clinical trial stage. Right now, they are in the pre-clinical trial phase," the minister said.

"It's very difficult to predict when a vaccine will come, but as a doctor, I can say that the process it involves, one year would be a modest estimate," he said. "Till the vaccine is not developed, people should use social vaccines like the mask and social distancing."

The Centre and private firms have stepped up efforts to develop a vaccine to halt the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The PM CARES Fund Trust has decided to allocate Rs 100 crore in efforts to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
