Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Adityanath signs MoU to generate 11 lakh jobs

India has started repatriation flights from Germany with 2 flights this week, and more coming in future. Speaking to our Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal from Frankfurt airport, India's envoy to Germany Mukta Dutta Tomar highlighted the key role played by Gurudwaras in the country in providing food and support to stranded in Indians. Remember Gurudwaras in countries like Australia, Portugal, Canada, the US have been helping out the stranded Indian nationals. Ambassador Tomar also talked about how the mission reached to stranded Indian nationals via online means.

WION: Maam, if you can tell us about the repatriation efforts?

Mukta Dutta Tomar: So we have first 2 flights from Germany under the Vande Bharat mission. The first one today is to Delhi, the second one tomorrow is to Bengaluru. The flight will take back Indian nationals stranded in Germany for the past several months. People on the flight are elderly people, stranded people. Visitors who came on short term visas, expected mothers and students who have finished the studies. The Vande Bharat mission, as you know is a massive effort launched by govt of India. You are aware external affairs minister had a coordination meeting a few days ago. In the first phase, 100,000 Indian nationals who were bright back to India from 30 plus countries. In the second phase, they are going to bring back people from more than 60 countries who are being brought back to India. The effort has been really to cover the whole world to make sure that Indian nationals stranded all over the world to bring them back and we are all working towards that. These are our first 2 flights. But I want to assure all stranded Indians in Germany that don't worry, there are going to be more flights. Next week we have 2 more flights, we will increase our efforts to get people back to India.

Sidhant Sibal: How has been the situation of Indian nationals and how both countries have been in touch with each other?

Mukta Dutta Tomar: Indian nationals stranded in Germany have shown tremendous patience amidst many difficulties people have had. I like to thank them for patience while the situation comes under control. As you know in Germany, 180,000 people impacted but the deaths have been comparatively lower than many countries around 8000. The situation is slowly coming back under control. German health care system has worked well, and India and Germany have been working together and contact has been at the highest level. PM Modi and Chancellor Merkel, our Foreign ministers have also had contact. Our commerce and Industry Minister has also been in touch with his counterpart in federal chancellory. We are not only talking about how we can support each other in such difficult times of pandemic but also see how we can cooperate in research. These are times when all of you need to come together and that is the effort.

Sidhant Sibal: How have german authorities been helping Indian mission's efforts?

Mukta Dutta Tomar: German authorities have been very forthcoming in resolving the problems of Indian nationals stranded in Germany. In Germany, the Indian community and student associations have played a wonderful role in supporting Indian nationals in times of needs and they have really been the family of the nationals away from home. They have supported them materially and morally, provided them encouragement in difficult times. I must also mention, for us, the many Gurudwaras in Germany have played an important role in supporting food and other support people needed. The embassy and the consulates have been at the forefront of lending support to Indian nationals in these difficult and stressful times, via helplines, webinars, emails, we have worked non-stop since the beginning of the pandemic.

Gross domestic product data out later on Friday is expected to show India’s economy grew at its slowest pace in at least two years in the March quarter as the coronavirus pandemic weakened already declining consumer demand and private investment.

The median forecast from a Reuters poll of economists put annual economic growth at 2.1% in the March quarter, lower than 4.7% in the December quarter. Forecasts ranged between +4.5% and -1.5%.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained the lockdown ordered on March 25 to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the world’s second most populous country, though many restrictions were eased for manufacturing, transport and other services from May 18.

The full impact of the lockdown on manufacturing and services will become more apparent in the June quarter, with Goldman Sachs predicting a 45% contraction from a year ago.

Economists expect the fiscal year that began in April will see the worst economic contraction in four decades.

“Economic activity will face ongoing disruption over the next year as the country transitions to a post-COVID-19 world,” the rating agency S&P said on Thursday, cutting its 2020/21 forecast to a 5% contraction.

Weather forecasts for normal monsoon rains are in Indian farmers’ favour at least, giving hope that the rural sector can help support the millions of migrant workers who returned to their villages from the cities when the lockdown began.

Number of coronavirus affected people in India has crossed 158,000 with 4,531 deaths, with an average daily jump of 6,000 cases in the last one week.

Beijing has rejected US President Donald Trump's offer to mediate or arbitrate between India and China to end their current border standoff.

Trump on Wednesday offered to arbitrate the raging border dispute between India and China, saying he was "ready, willing and able" to ease the tensions, amid the continuing standoff between the armies of the two Asian giants.

To this end, India said it was engaged with China to resolve the issue peacefully.

"We are engaged with the Chinese side to peacefully resolve it," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, replying to a question at an online media briefing.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the two countries did not want "intervention" from a third party to resolve the current military standoff.

"Between China and India we have existing border-related mechanisms and communication channels," Zhao told a media briefing here when asked about Trump's offer.

"We are capable of properly resolving the issues between us through dialogue and consultation. We do not need the intervention of the third party," he said.

The nearly 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the de-facto border between India and China.

Several areas along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh and North Sikkim have witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese armies recently, in a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides even two weeks after they were engaged in two separate face-offs.

India has said the Chinese military was hindering normal patrolling by its troops along the LAC in Ladakh and Sikkim and strongly refuted Beijing's contention that the escalating tension between the two armies was triggered by trespassing of Indian forces across the Chinese side.

The Ministry of External Affairs said all Indian activities were carried out on its side of the border, asserting that India has always taken a very responsible approach towards border management.

Beijing rejects Trump's offer to mediate in India-China border standoff

Swarms of locusts have been ravaging primarily five states -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra -- and are expected to reach a few others in the next few weeks.

To this end, authorities in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Telangana and Karnataka have sounded alerts to the possibility of locusts entering their territories.

In addittion, the Delhi government has issued an advisory on preventive measures to control the looming locust attack in the national capital. It has asked the authorities to organise awareness among farmers, spraying of insecticide and not letting the swarms rest during the night.

The desert locust are known to devour everything in their path. They can fly up to 150 km a day and a one-square-kilometre swarm can eat as much food as 35,000 people in one day, posing an unprecedented threat to food supply and livelihoods of millions of people.

The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that the crop-destroying insects could also reach Bihar and Odisha in the east in the coming weeks.

As the locust attack threat looms over Delhi and neighbouring states, a plea in the National Green Tribunal has also sought the implementation of the Centre's contingency plan to combat the situation.

The plea filed by an NGO said that despite having the contingency plan several states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are facing the locust swarm attack since February and the situation is getting worse in some of the areas.

Gujarat and Maharashtra have also been impacted by the swarm of millions of insects which eat up crops in the field they attack, inflicting heavy crop damage.

The plea said: "The worst affected are the farmers of the said area, thus the applicant NGO seeks urgent intervention of this tribunal and seeks direction to submit status report on the implementation of plan prepared by Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage, Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer Welfare, Union of India."

The contingency plan is a guidance document for Locust Field Offices, state governments and other stake holders during the attack, said the plea filed by 'Centre For Wildlife And Environmental Litigation Foundation'.

According to the plea, the plan covers assistance required from different stakeholders, their contribution and role, activities, type of strategy to be adopted, formation of teams, available resources, short falls and ways and means of obtaining additional resources, and the deployment as also the actions that need to be taken.

The plan also provides for use of aircraft with spraying kits for locust control purpose, it said. The NGO has sought constitution of committees to control the locust swarm attack within their respective states.

Alert sounded in Delhi, other states as locusts ravage Rajasthan, Maharashtra

The counsel of Nalini Sriharan(a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case) told WION that the Tamil Nadu Government’s submission to disallow Nalini and her husband Murugan(a fellow convict) to make video calls to their kith and kin who are residing abroad is Unconstitutional.

Earlier this month, Nalini’s mother S.Padma had filed a plea seeking to allow her daughter and son-in-law Murugan alias Sriharan to permit them to have 10-minute video calls daily, with their kin. Murugan’s mother resides in Sri Lanka and Murugan’s sister resides in London.

During the second hearing of this plea that took place on Thursday, Tamil Nadu government, which was represented by IG, Prisons had informed the Madras High Court that there is no provision either in TN Prison Rules 1983 or a Government order to allow a prisoner to make a voice or video call to anyone residing in a foreign country. On behalf of the TN Government, the IG had asked the court to dismiss the petition.

The State Government representative also added that Prison authorities cannot take action against the caller on another end if Nalini or Murugan violated the Prison rules or other Laws. Further, allowing a petitioner to make video/voice call is a privilege extended to prisoners for good behaviour and not a vested right. It was also pointed out that since the case had international ramifications, and that the convicts association with a banned outfit, this fell under the domain of Ministry of External Affairs.

However, Nalini’s advocate and senior counsel Radhakrishnan told WION that all the contentions raised by the State Government are Unconstitutional.

“Their kin being Foreign residents doesn’t mean that a Foreign country is involved and that the MEA must look into it. Nobody can prevent two individuals from across borders from talking. The prisoner has the same Right to express. Identifying and confirming the caller on the other end is the duty of the Prison authorities.” He told WION.

When it came to the possibility of them getting in touch with members of the banned outfit, he asserts that they are after all speaking to Murugan’s mother and sister, both of whom are not connected to any banned outfit.

“This is a family call to their parents/in-laws, authorities can monitor it or videograph it, even the jailer can sit beside them and witness what is being spoken. Not allowing even this is a clear violation of fundamental right, Article 21 of our Constitution. Its the duty of the state machinery to ensure that the call can take place” Radhakrishnan added, stating that the Government’s argument was indeed ‘intelligently drafted’.

Murugan had earlier made requests to speak to his father, a resident of Sri Lanka, but that was turned down. In late April this year when Murugan’s father expired, he was even denied the opportunity of seeing his father for the final time before the last rites were performed. Reports say that the father’s last wish was that of being able to see their son.

A representation was made in late April to permit the convicts to have video calls with their kin, it was in the second week of May that a plea was filed in this regard. The first Madras High Court bench that heard the plea earlier this week questioned the Government on why the convicts were not being allowed to make the video call.

The second hearing which took place via video-conference on Thursday was adjourned after hearing the Government’s response. The case is to come up for hearing on Monday, June 1st.

Reports state that Tamil Nadu’s jails have permitted several thousand video calls between the inmates and their family members during the two-month lockdown period.

TikTok has been spreading like digital wildfire in India and abroad, and so is obscenity and hatred on the app. Filth is so normal on the Chinese app that it trends and nothing is being done about it.

Most TikTok users are impressionable children and teenagers, TikTok's rules say the minimum user age is 13 but a huge number of children below the required age are still signing up for the app and TikTok is doing nothing to stop it.

Most governments too have conveniently ignored the reality in the name of "entertainment". However, the United States could be showing the way. Fourteen members of the US House of Representatives are demanding a probe into TikTok's "blatant disregard" of children's privacy with 14 members being Democrats.

They have written to the US federal trade commission regarding it. They have said that the app is collecting children's information without parental consent and that it has failed to take down videos made by children under the age of 13.

They said it is in violation of children's online privacy protection act which Americans call Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA).

Since the concerns are serious, WION sought some clarity from TikTok itself, we sent a mail to their office in India and raised some questions on the lines of the letter sent by the US lawmakers.

WION's first question was: TikTok users can side-step age verification through other social media platforms, what are Tiktok's policies to prevent this from happening? A child who doesn't have a TikTok account can easily get one by logging in through other safer social media platforms, how is this allowed?...

TikTok has notoriously been called a magnet for pedophiles even as thousands still lurk in its shadows. Predatory adults can freely message children on the app.

WION's question number two was: Do harmful trends like the hashtag skull breaker challenge not put the lives of children at risk? A challenge that often results in individuals slamming on the back of their head onto the ground. It once sent a 12-year-old child to the hospital, the absurd challenges and trends that emerge on the app aren't always fun.

Kids are not going to think about the outcome, they could be at risk of attempting something life-threatening. These concerns exist on almost all social media platforms but the interface of TikTok makes it easy for anyone and everyone to put out content.

It is mostly purely based on music and videos, it encourages people to let go of their inhibitions and it encourages themes that are mature in content. The result mostly is profanity and suggestive videos. It is a dangerous trend, TikTok must be regulated, if not banned.

Is TikTok safe for children? WION seeks clarification from Chinese app makers in India

China and India do not need help from the US to resolve their current round frictions at the border, China's state-run media said on Thursday in response to President Donald Trump's offer to mediate, pointing out that the leadership of the two countries successfully solved the Doklam standoff in 2017 with "concerted efforts and wisdom."

While the Chinese Foreign Ministry is yet to react to Trump's tweet which appears to have caught Beijing by surprise, an op-ed article in the state-run Global Times said both countries don't need such help from President Trump.

"The latest dispute can be solved bilaterally by China and India. The two countries should keep alert on the US, which exploits every chance to create waves that jeopardize regional peace and order," it said.

"China and India successfully solved their Doklam faceoff with concerted efforts and wisdom. The two informal summits between the leadership of the two sides, one in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2018 and the other in the Indian city of Chennai in 2019, set the tone to maintain peace and tranquillity along the border," it said.

"Indian experts also believe that the special representatives' talks on the boundary question between India and China constitute an important channel of communication, and should continue to mitigate border standoffs and other hot issues," it said.

Amid latest flare-ups between Indian and Chinese armies, Trump on Wednesday said he was "ready, willing and able to mediate" between the two countries.

"We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute," Trump said in a tweet on Wednesday.

In New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that India was engaged with China to resolve the border issue, in a carefully crafted reaction seen as a virtual rejection of President Trump's offer.

"We are engaged with the Chinese side to peacefully resolve it," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, replying to a volley of questions at an online media briefing.

The MEA spokesperson did not reply to questions like whether the US had approached India with the offer, whether New Delhi has communicated its response over it to Washington or whether the Trump administration has been briefed about the current standoff between Chinese and Indian soldiers in eastern Ladakh.

At the same time, he asserted that India is "firm" in its resolve to protect its sovereignty and national security.

Mr Srivastava said India is committed to the objective of maintenance of peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control and that Indian troops take a very responsible approach towards border management.

"The two sides have established mechanisms both at military and diplomatic levels to resolve situations which may arise in border areas peacefully through dialogue and continue to remain engaged through these channels," he said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday that both China and India have proper mechanisms and communication channels to resolve the issues through dialogue and consultations.

The situation in eastern Ladakh deteriorated after around 250 Chinese and Indian soldiers were engaged in a violent face-off on the evening of May 5 which spilt over to the next day before the two sides agreed to "disengage" following a meeting at the level of local commanders.

Over 100 Indian and Chinese soldiers were injured in the violence.

The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in North Sikkim on May 9.

The elections for the 5 non-permanent seats of United Nations Security Council will take place on 17th June with India being one of the candidates.

India will be standing unopposed for the Asia Pacific seat which is currently held by Indonesia and had announced its candidacy for the the2021-2022 term in November 2013. It was endorsed by the Asia Pacific group in June 2019.

All in All 7 member states--Canada, Djibouti, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway are in the fray. For one seat of Africa--Djibouti and Kenya are standing, for 2 seats of western Europe and others--3 countries, Canada, Ireland and Norway standing. For the Asia Pacific and Latin America and Caribbean seat--India and Mexico stand unopposed.

As the founding member of the world body, India has served 7 times as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

The UN said in its candidature India "emphasised its unique position as a democratic country with a population of over one billion" and "As one of the largest troop and police contributors...its durable commitment to UN peacekeeping."

As of 30 April, India contributes 5,434 personnel to nine UN peace operations, predominantly the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), followed by the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

"India would seek to advance discussions on counter-terrorism related issues," said a UN document on upcoming UNSC election, "emphasising the need for better regional and international cooperation to combat terrorism."

New Delhi has been a long-standing proponent of Security Council reform, including the expansion of its membership (both permanent and non-permanent) to better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.

Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan usually has a rotating presence at the UNSC and usually, South Asian countries rarely run against each other. One exception occurred in 1975 when India and Pakistan contested the same seat and eight rounds of voting were needed before Pakistan prevailed.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the election this time will be different. The President of the General Assembly will give at least ten days’ notice to UN member states of the date of the elections and a designated venue for casting ballots. Member states would cast ballots during designated time slots and at a specified venue.

Elections for 5 non-permanent seats of UNSC on June 17; India stands unopposed in Asia pacific seat

In a recent press conference, India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman announced that the Private sector will be a co-traveller in India’s Space journey. The announcement was made as a part of Policy reforms to fast-track Investment effort towards Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India). But beyond the participation of private players and industry partners, ISRO needs much more impetus from within and outside in order to establish itself as a big player in the highly-competitive 21st-century Global market.

Today, ISRO is fully dependent on two launch vehicles in the PSLV and GSLV series, both of which were conceptualized back in the 1970s and 80s. While ISRO has innovated and performed inter-planetary, deep space exploration missions with these(lesser-power) rockets, India is nowhere near self-reliance in terms of launch capability. It is lamentable, that in the last 27 years our Space agency hasn’t developed an engine(fuelled by earth-storable propellants) that is more powerful than the Vikas Engine, which was based on the French Viking engine.

India still pays for the French Rocket Ariane V to launch our own satellites that weigh over 4-tons. This highlights the pressing need for more powerful high-thrust liquid propulsion engines and cryogenic engines that can improve the payload capacity of our rockets, especially at a time when India is aiming for manned missions(Gaganyaan).

For perspective, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket (their smallest) can lift twice as much payload as India’s most powerful rocket the GSLV Mark III. SpaceX most powerful rocket Falcon Heavy can lift six times as much payload as the Mark III. So when foreign customers approach ISRO, it is only for launching the smallest of their satellites, most of which are built by start-ups and students. Launching such small payloads does bring in revenue, but this amounts to hardly anything. ISRO’s share of the $350billion global space market is barely 2per cent.

“Private participation is welcome in production of existing rocket engines and in providing propellants, but ISRO must strictly remain focused on Research and Development. ISRO can keep the R&D of launch vehicles and thrusters with itself, due to the sensitive nature of the technology. However, we must also urgently develop launch vehicles with a payload capacity of at least 10-12 tons(thrice as much as current limit) to meet our national requirement”, S. Nambi Narayanan, Retd. Project Director 2nd, 4th stage of PSLV, Cryogenic Engine told WION.

In terms of satellites, ISRO has been designing and fabricating a wide range of them that are being used for communication, imaging, weather monitoring, remote-sensing, strategic purposes etc. However, this is also a field that can be thrown open to the private sector in a bigger way. It could mean allowing private players to conduct home-grown research and development in satellite technology and also the capability of building them indigenously based on the requirements of various agencies. Also, ISRO would need to start building state-of-the-art satellites that can also be sold to foreign customers. Presently, ISRO is only launching foreign satellites for a cost, but there’s a considerable market in fabricating satellites for customers.

“Now we have engineers from the private sector who are trained by ISRO for integrating satellites and manufacturing hardware. They take part in testing and qualifying the hardware. While ISRO has the facility to build 20 satellites simultaneously, we don’t have the required manpower and that’s where private talent can come in. We should have a scenario where private players can build satellites as per the needs of foreign customers”, Dr.Mylswamy Annadurai, Retd. Director, U.R. Rao Satellite Centre and Project Director Chandrayaan 1 told WION.

Given the large number of Indian agencies using ISRO satellites and their data, a system could be evolved where specific, mission-oriented satellites are launched based on the needs of the user. The user agency must also have the freedom to choose a private or an ISRO facility to fabricate the satellite on a payment basis. This would avoid the under-utilization of satellites arising from poor inter-agency coordination.

It is said that ISRO’s first launch from Sriharikota this year, that was slated for March 5th had to be called off as the user agency, the ground interface was not prepared to utilize the data that would be provided by the satellite. Earth Observation satellite GISAT-1 was to be launched into Geostationary orbit by the GSLV Mark-II rocket. Likewise, the GSAT-11, which is among the heaviest satellites built by ISRO is said to be unused since its launch in late 2018, as the ground interface and user-agencies weren’t prepared.

“Operating satellites require excellent communications, ground stations and other infrastructure. Development of grounds stations, terminals and software are also a big avenue for the private sector to explore. The competition arising from ideas, innovation and talent of the private sector is required to shake the inertia of ISRO” Dr Annadurai added.

If we are to envision rocket launches by private industries from ISRO’s spaceport, then the country needs to revisit and update its age-old Space laws which were drafted two decades ago. There must also be a clear Space Policy that outlines what is ISRO’s mission and the plan for future deep-space exploration. Additional regulatory guidelines are also needed to codify the responsibilities of every participating agency and private industry.

“Let’s say, God forbid, something goes wrong in a launch (in which a private player has a major role), who would take responsibility? There are liabilities involved and who would pay? There are so many commitments involved and our country would be answerable for any damage that may arise. We can’t point fingers after a mishap, we must proactively get a detailed framework”, Dr G. Madhavan Nair, Retd. Chairman, ISRO told WION.

Given the nature of space science where investments are high return are gradual, our policymakers must keep in mind that a considerable level of hand-holding would be necessary when throwing the doors open for private industries. However, for reasons unknown, ISRO to has not ben very enthused about allowing major private participation so far.

“Considering the Indian scenario, replicating the US model of total privatization would be irrelevant, as US firms are military-funded and we in India don’t have a worthy aerospace industry. However, like Europe, we can have government funding, along with industry support.” Dr Nair added.

Looking at post-launch, the commercial utility of communication satellites need to be explored further. It’s not just about private firms fabricating, assembling and launching satellites, but providing satellite communication services must be looked into. These services include leasing transponders for TV broadcasting, broadband services and many other ways of generating income.

Dr Annadurai says that this field has immense potential if we clear some hurdles. “The key issue is managing the vital frequency spectrum and this must be addressed by our policymakers. Young talent with fresh ideas from the private industry can infuse innovative solutions for effective use of communications frequencies thereby bringing greater connectivity speeds that can enable a truly Digital India. Policy on the usage of remote sensing satellite data would also draw more private players into space-tech” he added.

There is also a further need to re-organize ISRO’s activities from within, in order to achieve operational efficiency. This would mean keeping the routine tasks such as rocket launching, tracking and station-keeping of satellites under one division. Perhaps, in the long run, when the true potential of private industry has been unlocked, these tasks could also be handed over to the private sector, thus enabling ISRO to focus on the core task of Research and development.

When we consider that ISRO was officially instituted in 1969 (at the start, in 1962 it was called INCOSPAR), the same year when America put a man on the moon, we must take pride in the fact that we have come thus far. ISRO must also be lauded for developing several critical technologies indigenously, but ISRO must not rest on its laurels. India’s formidable foundation and experience in space technology need to be fine-tuned for the 21st-century requirements, where foreign private companies are making rapid strides, not only in rocket-launching but also in private space travel and deep-space exploration. A good start for ISRO would be to immediately develop a higher-thrust liquid engine (propelled by Earth-Storable liquids) and a cryogenic engine for itself, besides state-of-the-art satellites that can compete in the international market.

As the novel coronavirus pandemic hit the world, a worldwide lockdown was initiated by majority of the affected 120 countries.

Although this lockdown, till certain limit, helped contain the spread of coronavirus, it had an adverse effect on the economies of the infected countries.

According to a recent report by researchers, at least 49 million people across the world are expected to plunge into extreme poverty as a direct result of the pandemic's economic destruction. People living on less than $1.90 per day will be categorized under the term extremely poor.

A lot of nations have been battling the economic crisis, which has also formed a tense environment in the political scenarios of the leading countries.

It has also been found out that, sadly, India is one of the leading countries in this study as the World Bank has estimated that around 12 million of its citizens will be pushed to the very margins this year. Daily wage workers -- hawkers, roadside vendors, workers employed in the construction industry --and those employed by small businesses have been the worst-affected groups.

"Much of the Indian government's efforts to mitigate poverty over the years could be negated in a matter of just a few months," said Ashwajit Singh, managing director of IPE Global, to a media organization. He also predicted that more people could die from hunger, than virus.

A World Bank report recently concluded that India had been making significant progress and was close to losing its status as the country with the most poor citizens. However, the lockdown might reverse the gains and out India back in that category.

A report by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) and the World Bank observed more than 80% of households had experienced a drop income, which was majorly due to the lockdown, and not because of coronavirus. These households, may not be able to recover or survive much longer without aid from the government, according to this report.

The economy was already at its slowest pace in over a decade, and the lockdown initiated due to the pandemic made things worse for the economy. This lockdown has pushed the economy to what may be its first full-year contraction in more than four decades.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, India is Asia's virus hotspot with more than 151,000 infections.

Indian Railways, along with Indian government, has been running special Shramik trains for migrant labours who were stuck away from their hometowns during the lockdown.

Indian Railways has also started inter-state trains. However, reports have been emerging about how there aren't enough resources on-board for passengers of long journey.

In such a report, it has been revealed that at least seven deaths have been reported on-board the Shramik special trains. This claim by officials has raised multiple questions about how Indian Railways is handling the non-AC migrant trains.

The officials, however, also added that most of the deceased had pre-existing health conditions.

Out of these seven, four were travelling to Bihar and three to Uttar Pradesh. All these deaths have been reported in the past few days.

The issue was raised after a video was spotted where a toddler was trying to wake up the mother, without realizing that she has died. The 25-year-old lost her life on Bihar's Muzaffarpur, and Railways claimed that the lady had recently undergone a heart surgery.

Another death of a four-year-old was reported in Bihar as the father was seen hunting for milk around the station. This raised questions about the poor resources being provided by Indian Railways.

While a lot of passengers have claimed and criticised that Indian Railways has not been providing enough food and water on the trains or the stations and the trains are taking longer and undecided routes to reach the destination, the Railways has, however, maintained that these trains are running on "pre-scheduled rationalised routes".

Some trains which should have taken 24 hours to reach to their destinations, arrived in over two days, according to reports, leaving the passengers on-board hungry and desperate.

"A Few deaths have been reported in Shramik special trains. In most of these cases, it is discovered that those who died are old sick people and chronic disease patients, who had actually gone to big cities for medical treatment and could come back only after the Railways started these Shramik Special trains," said a spokesperson for the Railways.

He also said that 78,11,575 meals and 11,07,7,830 water bottles were given to migrant workers on board these trains till May 26.

However, many passengers have complained to media that they were starving on-board due to longer than anticipated run time of these trains.

The passengers also claimed that no food and water packages are being provided by the authorities of the origin station, as it was broadcasted by the Railways that the originating state has to provide food and water to the migrant workers before the start of the journey.

Although, the Railways had instructed the General Managers of each zone to spend up to Rs 1 lakh on each Shramik Special train to arrange meals for the workers, questions are being raised on whether or not this fund is being used in the right manner.

A senior official told media that due to the social-distancing norms, food and water is placed at the gate of the coaches, they are not distributed by anyone on-board and the workers are expected to share it among themselves. In case of any complaints, the meals are provided again at the next station where it is available.

However, videos have surfaced on the internet where migrant workers onboard the train can be seen fighting for food and water packages. The workers have claimed that the quantity provided is very less and that results in passengers fighting to get their hands first on the resources.

Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and handle the situation, she said, "I appeal to the Prime Minister and Home Minister to take care of the situation. I want PM to intervene, this is no time for politics. There is a spike in cases in Bihar and other BJP ruled states. This is one country. The virus has to be stopped from spreading.

The nearly 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the de-facto border between India and China.

But on Wednesday, China took an apparently conciliatory tone by saying that the situation at the border with India is "overall stable and controllable," and both the countries have proper mechanisms and communication channels to resolve the issues through a dialogue and consultation.

The Ministry of External Affairs then said all Indian activities were carried out on its side of the border, asserting that India has always taken a very responsible approach towards border management.
