'I divorce you, I divorce you and...': Dubai princess divorces husband on Instagram

British fashion label Burberry on Monday announced the immediate departure of chief executive Jonathan Akeroyd as it posted "disappointing" results with the luxury sector pressured by weak Chinese demand. Akeroyd, 57, departs after less than two and a half years at the helm, while the Briton is being replaced by Joshua Schulman, a former CEO at American fashion brands Michael Kors and Coach.

In a statement, Burberry chair Gerry Murphy described US national Schulman, 52, as "a proven leader with an outstanding record of building global luxury brands and driving profitable growth". Schulman, who officially joins the group on Wednesday, said he looked "forward to working alongside (creative director) Daniel Lee and the talented teams to drive global growth, delight our customers, and write the next chapter of the Burberry story".

In a separate statement, Murphy said the group's recent "performance is disappointing". Revenue slid 22 per cent to £458 million ($595 million) in Burberry's first quarter, or three months to the end of June.

The 168-year-old label -- famous for its trench coats and trademark red, camel and black check design -- announced plans to cut costs, which involve suspending dividend payments. Murphy warned that the group risked an operating loss in its first half.

- Shares slump -

Burberry's share price slumped 14.5 per cent to £7.57 following the announcements, making it by far the largest faller on London's top-tier FTSE 100 index, which was flat overall in morning trade.

"Burberry grabbed the headlines in company news, bringing forward its first quarter update amid some developments which came as a shock," noted Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor. "The level of the group's appeal has been thwarted by weakening consumer demand, especially in the likes of China."

Burberry's share price is down 46 per cent since the start of the year. Highlighting troubles across the luxury fashion sector, Gucci owner Kering in April issued a profit warning, citing a weak Chinese economy.

China on Monday posted lower-than-expected growth of 4.7 per cent in the second quarter. That represented the slowest rate of expansion since early 2023 when China was emerging from a crippling zero-Covid policy that strangled growth.

Retail sales -- a key gauge of consumption -- rose just two per cent in June, down from 3.7 per cent growth in May. "Chinese sales can no longer be taken for granted" for the likes of Burberry, Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, said Monday.

Vicky Kaushal, Ammy Virk and Triptii Dimri will soon be seen in the film Bad Newz. The movie is about a girl who gets pregnant but doesn't know who the father is. This condition is known as heteropaternal superfecundation in medical terms. So what is it? In this case, two eggs released in the same cycle are fertilised but by the sperm of two different men. This happens&nbsp;when a woman has sex with two different men within a short period of time. So the resulting twins have two different biological fathers.

This is an extremely rare condition in humans but is common in dogs, cats and cows. To date, only 19 cases of heteropaternal superfecundation have been reported worldwide.&nbsp;

<h2>How does&nbsp;heteropaternal superfecundation happen?</h2>

During a regular cycle, ovaries build up follicles, all of which, except one, degenerate eight days later. This one follicle develops the egg and ejects it around day 14. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) regulates this process, so if the FSH levels are high, multiple ovulations can happen. This results in two eggs being ejected by the same ovary, or one each by two ovaries.&nbsp;

It is impossible to say how many such cases have actually happened since they can only be revealed if someone contests paternity.&nbsp;

It can occur if a woman has sex before the egg is released and then again with another man after the egg is released. Since sperms can survive for a few days in the reproductive tract, chances are that if two eggs are released, one each gets fertilised by the two men.

<h2>Cases of &nbsp;heteropaternal superfecundation&nbsp;</h2>

Not a lot is known about all the cases of the said condition. In 2009, a woman in Dallas gave birth to a pair of such twins. Mia Washington gave birth to twins Justin and Jordan while she was with her fiancee James Harrison. She admitted that she had an affair during the time the twins were conceived. Since the twins looked extremely different, they had a paternity test and it was revealed that they were fathered by different men.&nbsp;

In 2013, another such case came out in Turkey where the parents took a paternity test since one of the twins had a different blood group. They said that one of the children was not theirs. The results found that the second twin was not fathered by the husband of the woman.&nbsp;

Obesity can no longer be ignored as just another lifestyle issue. With a staggering 42 per cent&nbsp;of the total US population suffering from obesity and close to 70 per cent of people being labelled overweight, it’s time we actively looked at our lifestyle and made some pertinent changes that can give us a quick turnaround in terms of health and happiness. US-based physician Dr Rajeev Karupati recently dropped an audio book called The Book of Body Positivity on Audible exploring the link between obesity, lifestyle and medicine. Exploring his inspiration behind the book, the medical expert and author spoke to WION about the message he wants to give out to those who want to lead a healthy life.

Here are the edited excerpts from the chat:&nbsp;

<h2>Obesity is not the individual's fault but of society</h2>

Q: What was the thought and inspiration behind writing The Book of Body Positivity?

A: I'm board-certified in obesity, lifestyle medicine, and family medicine. This book, The Book of Body Positivity, was motivated by a desire to address a pressing issue in society now – the problem of obesity and the stigma associated with it. Unlike other diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, liver problems and more, obesity is a disease that shows up physically. And obesity, by definition, is a medical condition. We don't stigmatise people who have diseases like high blood pressure, or diabetes, right? We don't shame them. Unfortunately, we shame people who have this medical condition called obesity.&nbsp;

Anyone who looks bigger,&nbsp;the medical community defines them as obese, based on their size. There are two problems with this. As long as the medical community defines obesity based on the size of the person and not based on what goes on within the body, we have a problem because 70% of the population is overweight and of the remaining 30%, some are malnourished.&nbsp;

Another cause of concern is the stigma attached to being overweight. We have to&nbsp;recognise that it is not an individual's problem but of the society.&nbsp;As a society, we created this. We didn’t have this issue some 50-60 years ago.&nbsp;In my book, I provide causes of this growing obesity and solutions to it.

<h2>Not all people are obese but have adiposity</h2>

Q: What do you hope listeners can take away from this audiobook?&nbsp;

A: The book addresses both the medical and the psychosocial impact of fat-shaming. I advocate replacing the word obesity with adiposity. In other words, obesity right now is defined based on the size of the person. What I propose in this book is currently how we define obesity should be changed to a screening test. For example, if a person's BMI (body mass index) is a certain number and it is higher, that person is called obese. Instead, if we change the name to adiposity, the person has more adiposity, which means that the person has more abnormal fat tissue.&nbsp;

In my book, I also address the causes of obesity. For example, from food lovers, we have become a society of food addicts because of the content they put in the food. If the food industry makes us food addicts, how can we blame an&nbsp;individual for it? I also talk about the direct link between age and food habits. With age, we engage in fewer activities but we continue to eat the same food as before. This leads to weight gain. I discuss other such things in my book.&nbsp;

Q: What would you suggest someone struggling with obesity?

A: &nbsp;We have to recognise multiple socio-dynamic factors, family and outside influences that make a person obese. You have to recognise that it is not the individual's fault, but it is the individual's responsibility to recognise what is causing them. That responsibility should be there but the blame should not be on the individual.

Q: How do you feel about the importance of accessibility in lieu of the audio adaptation of your book?&nbsp;

A: If you hear a book, you get direct exposure to what the author is saying through the medium of listening. It is as if the author is directly talking or speaking to you and advising you. You can listen to small bits of information. You can listen for 5-10 minutes or longer if you have the time. You can go back and re-listen to them. It's so easy.

"Boys don't cry" to "Men don't do domestic chores": the males in society are constantly pressured to conform to the 'Ideal Man Box'.&nbsp;

This 'box' is the method by which society reinforces the stereotypical ways a man should behave. Men are expected to have a muscular build, not show emotions, &nbsp;be in 'control' of their partner, etc. Growing up listening to these comments conditions them in a certain way, which instils a notion of toxic masculinity from a young age.&nbsp;

Social environment conditions men to function in a certain manner. "Locker room talk" is a slang used to describe the conversations between men/boys in the absence of women, usually boasting about their 'sexual conquests', which glorifies toxic masculinity and chauvinism.&nbsp;

One pressing issue that is often brushed under the carpet due to the circumstances created is body image issues among males.&nbsp;

WION reached out to an expert to learn more about this problem and the secrecy and social stigma attached to it. Mansi Poddar, a trauma-informed psychotherapist said, "Teens/ preteens/ young males in their 20s and gym rats who have always had an attachment to a certain body shape" are the ones most vulnerable to body image issues.&nbsp;

Impact of childhood experiences on body image

According to &nbsp;Poddar, a traumatic childhood and not having an ideal physique while growing up has a significant impact on the body image of boys.&nbsp;

Young boys who grow up in an environment where they are constantly picked on due to their size develop a preoccupation with their bodies, which adversely impacts their future.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the influence of media also plays a distinct role in boys developing body image issues. Young boys grow up idolising Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc. All of them have perfectly chiselled bodies and well-defined abs. This instils a false image in their minds that to be a man means to have a body like theirs.&nbsp;

Muscle Dysmorphia- Body image disorder in males&nbsp;

Muscle Dysmorphia, also known as Bigorexia, is a body dysmorphic disorder which triggers an obsession with one's body not being big or muscular enough. Men who go through this engage in extensive workout routines and take supplements and steroids to achieve their ideal manly body.&nbsp;

When dealing with her patients, Poddar says it is important to teach them about signs of an unhealthy relationship with exercise and body. "We teach them how our thoughts are related to our behaviours, how they are automatic, and how they drive our behaviours. This helps them develop an understanding of how their disorder develops and maintains itself. We also work on identity which becomes hyper-focused."

Why do men not open up about this issue easily?&nbsp;

Expressing emotions is considered a weakness according to societal standards of masculinity. Hence, men refrain from talking about body image-related issues as they feel the shame associated with this topic and are therefore secretive about it.&nbsp;

Poddar told WION, "Many men, especially in the queer community are subject to bullying and body shaming. They come for help more than cishet [cicgender heterosexual] men."&nbsp;

Akul, a 23-year-old queer man shed light on&nbsp;body image issues among males and&nbsp;told WION,&nbsp;"As a queer man, body issues come up quite often. The ideal man is 'straight, muscular, and macho' and if you don't fit into this stereotype, you are made to feel weird."&nbsp;

"There need to be open spaces for people of all sizes to feel comfortable. Childhood bullying leaves lifelong marks, some of which aren't even visible," he&nbsp;added.&nbsp;

For men to talk openly about body image-related issues, it is imperative to break the stereotype that being bulky equates to masculinity.&nbsp;

Having a 'Superhero body' should not be the ultimate goal, and a man's worth should certainly not be determined by the amount he can bench-press.

Poddar told WION, "Many men, especially in the queer community are subject to bullying and body shaming. They come for help more than cishet [cicgender heterosexual] men." Akul, a 23-year-old queer man shed light on body image issues among males and told WION, "As a queer man, body issues come up quite often. The ideal man is 'straight, muscular, and macho' and if you don't fit into this stereotype, you are made to feel weird." "There need to be open spaces for people of all sizes to feel comfortable. Childhood bullying leaves lifelong marks, some of which aren't even visible," he added. For men to talk openly about body image-related issues, it is imperative to break the stereotype that being bulky equates to masculinity. Having a 'Superhero body' should not be the ultimate goal, and a man's worth should certainly not be determined by the amount he can bench-press.

Breaking the 'Ideal Man Box' myth: Male body image issues and weight of toxic masculinity

We all know that smoking and drinking alcohol regularly and being excessively overweight can pose serious health risks. However, new evidence has emerged which proves that 40 per cent of cancer cases can be prevented by cutting out high-risk behaviours and adopting a healthy lifestyle.&nbsp;

According to a study published by the American Cancer Society, smoking, drinking alcohol and being overweight are three leading preventable causes of cancer in adults. The study also encourages public health leaders to educate people about the potential risks of these unhealthy habits.&nbsp;

The study estimated that 40 per cent of the nearly 1.8 million cancer cases in adults aged 30 and older were attributable to "potentially modifiable risk factors" in 2019. It examined 30 types of cancer, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers.

The study also talks about vaccines for HPV and hepatitis B, which significantly reduce the risk of cancer-causing infections.

Lung cancer had the highest number of cases linked to preventable risk factors. The study found that 104,410 lung cancers in men and 97,250 in women could have been prevented. The next most common preventable cancers were 50,570 cases of skin melanoma and 44,310 cases of colorectal cancer.

"Even though smoking rates have dropped a lot in the past few decades, the number of lung cancer deaths caused by smoking in the United States is still very high," said Farad Islami, the American Cancer Society's senior scientific director of cancer disparity research and the study's lead author.

Islami also said that the study highlights the need for strong tobacco control policies in every state to help people quit smoking and for early detection of lung cancer.

As technology advances, dating is no longer limited to finding a partner at a party or through a mutual connection. Online dating has gained momentum in the past decade, allowing people to choose a romantic partner sitting across time zones by swiping right.&nbsp;

According to Statista, the online dating market in India is expected to reach US $69.90 million in 2024. As the trend of finding partners through apps and websites continues, it is imperative to consider the issues it may bring.&nbsp;

To understand the downsides of this emerging trend of online dating, WION spoke to an expert, Kamna Chibber, Head of Department, Mental Health &amp; Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.

Asked whether online dating culture is toxic, Chibber said, "It cannot be called toxic in itself. The approach individuals adopt can make it toxic, which then relates to a person's conduct in how they date".

New and emerging terminology in the online dating arena

Modern relationships come with new ways to describe each phase of your dating journey. With the emergence of online dating platforms, there are no longer only three phases in the journey- dating, engaged and married. It is much more complicated than that.&nbsp;

Ghosting&nbsp;
It is the act of a person completely ignoring his/her partner abruptly. The person won't reply to calls or texts and vanishes like a ghost, hence the name. This adversely impacts the person who gets 'ghosted', and they may begin to blame themselves.&nbsp;

Zombieing&nbsp;
Zombieing occurs after ghosting when a person comes back to rekindle the relationship with the person they ghosted before. The person tries to woo the partner by justifying their reason for ghosting and convincing them that they are a changed person now.&nbsp;

Situationship&nbsp;
One of the most popular terms in modern relationships is sitautionships. It involves people getting romantically involved out of convenience. To describe it in easier terms, it is not as serious as relationships and does not require that level of commitment. &nbsp;

These are a few emerging trends in the online dating era that govern modern relationships.&nbsp;

Impact of online dating on mental health&nbsp;

Online dating is a tool, and using it efficiently or misusing it depends on the user. "There is no direct link to a specific clinical condition. Multiple factors come together to precipitate a clinical condition or disorder. Directly linking online dating experiences to an illness is incorrect," Kamna Chibber said.&nbsp;

Asked whether factors like age, gender, and sexual orientation play into the experiences of toxic online dating Chibber said, "Online dating can provide individuals anonymity and the ability to disappear or ghost or block people. People can misrepresent their age, gender, &nbsp;sexual preferences and other realities of their life unless there are guardrails built into the system. As a result, there can be difficult or toxic experiences that users of online dating can be vulnerable to."&nbsp;

Another downside associated with the excessive use of dating apps is 'dating app burnout'. A recent survey revealed that on average a user spends 51 minutes on dating apps. Men spend less than 49 minutes a day while women spend around 52 minutes daily.&nbsp;

Scrolling mindlessly on dating platforms can be mentally exhausting. There is always pressure from within to appear 'interesting' to all your potential matches. Additionally, if a connection doesn't pan out,&nbsp;self-doubt begins to kick in and the vicious cycle of overthinking and criticising oneself begins.&nbsp;

Effective ways to deal with online dating so that it doesn't affect you adversely&nbsp;

When asked how online dating differs from traditional dating in terms of psychological impact, Chibber said, "The differences relate to the availability of potential partners and the way individuals might invest in relationships. From a psychological standpoint if the relational quality is good then the impact would not be different for either new or traditional ways of dating."&nbsp;

On how to effectively deal with the online dating culture, Chibber has a few words of advice,&nbsp;"Have clarity of what you are seeking from a dating relationship. Be particular about verifying facts. Walk away when you see red flags. Take responsibility for your own behaviour. Be authentic and honest from your side," she said.

The Zika virus, an arthropod-borne flavivirus transmitted primarily by mosquitoes, gained significant attention during the 2015 epidemic in the United States. While initial concerns centred around acute symptoms and immediate consequences of the infection, it has become evident that the Zika virus poses severe long-term health risks, particularly neurological complications. These complications affect both congenitally exposed infants and adults, leading to a range of persistent and sometimes debilitating conditions.

Neurological impact on congenitally exposed infants

Infants exposed to the Zika virus in utero face a spectrum of neuropathological conditions, with microcephaly being the most severe outcome. Microcephaly, characterized by an abnormally small head and brain size, is often accompanied by significant developmental challenges. These infants frequently experience recurrent seizures and severely compromised neuropsychomotor development. This impairment affects their ability to achieve key developmental milestones, such as crawling, walking, and speaking, which in turn hampers their overall growth and quality of life.

Additionally, other neurological manifestations in Zika-exposed infants include widespread brain calcification, cerebral atrophy, and hypoplasia of the brain stem and cerebral regions. Ventriculomegaly, or the enlargement of brain ventricles, is also commonly observed. These structural abnormalities in the brain contribute to a range of functional deficits. Even infants who appear healthy at birth can develop severe neurological complications later in life, highlighting the insidious nature of Zika virus exposure.&nbsp;

As these children grow older, they may exhibit personal, social and&nbsp;developmental delays, difficulty swallowing, and various motor dysfunctions. Compromised mobility, muscular hypertonia (increased muscle tone), dystonic movements (involuntary muscle contractions), and impaired fine motor skills are some of the common challenges they face. These issues significantly impact their daily activities, requiring ongoing medical and therapeutic interventions to manage symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Long-term health effects in adults

While the focus has often been on the impact of Zika virus on infants, adults infected with the virus are not spared from severe neurological complications. Zika infection in adults can result in a range of conditions, including encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, acute myelitis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

GBS, in particular, is a serious autoimmune disease affecting the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. The connection between Zika virus and GBS has been a significant concern, as the autoimmune response triggered by the virus can have long-lasting effects on the nervous system.

Encephalitis and encephalomyelitis, both involving inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, respectively, can lead to severe neurological impairments. Symptoms may include headaches, confusion, seizures, and motor deficits, which can persist long after the initial infection has resolved. Acute myelitis, characterized by inflammation of the spinal cord, can cause sudden weakness and sensory disturbances, further complicating the patient's recovery.

Chronic pain and other complications

In addition to neurological disorders, some Zika-infected individuals develop chronic pain, which can be debilitating and significantly impact their quality of life. Chronic pain may manifest as persistent headaches, joint pain, and muscle aches, which require long-term management strategies. The underlying mechanisms of chronic pain in Zika-infected patients are not yet fully understood, but the inflammatory response triggered by the virus is believed to play a crucial role.

Episodes of septic shock, although rare, have also been reported in Zika-infected patients. Septic shock is a life-threatening condition characterized by a severe drop in blood pressure, leading to organ failure. While not a common complication, its occurrence underscores the potential severity of Zika virus infection and its ability to affect multiple organ systems.

Mortality and long-term consequences

The long-term consequences of Zika virus infection can be severe and, in some cases, fatal. The neurological syndromes associated with the virus, such as GBS and encephalitis, carry significant risks of long-term disability and mortality. The impact on the mature nervous system is particularly concerning, as it highlights the virus's ability to cause lasting damage beyond the initial infection phase.

In summary, the Zika virus poses significant long-term health risks to both infants and adults. Congenitally exposed infants face a range of developmental challenges and neurological impairments, while adults are at risk of severe neurological conditions and chronic pain. The potential for lasting damage underscores the importance of continued research, surveillance, and prevention efforts to mitigate the long-term impact of Zika virus infection. Public health initiatives aimed at controlling mosquito populations, along with ongoing support for affected individuals, are crucial in addressing the long-term health effects of this formidable virus.

This short and simple story by Spencer Johnson teaches us about the value of embracing change and being ready for it. The book talks about two mice and two "Littlepeople" who in their hunt for cheese discover a cheese station. Soon the cheese is over, leaving the two "Littlepeople" devastated. While the mice were prepared for such a scenario, the "Littlepeople" were not. The mice go out to look for more cheese, but one of the "Littlepeople" refuses to move and go out to look for more cheese. He keeps sulking about the lost cheese and doesn't want to go out to look for more. The book is a simple lesson on how ignoring change can lead to one's end.

Zika virus preconception counselling is very important for couples planning pregnancy residing in a geographical region with active transmission of the virus. Proper information, knowledge, and preconception counselling are essential to prevent Zika virus infection that may affect the outcome of pregnancy as well.

Preconception counselling should help couples make informed decisions on planning the pregnancy, protection during pregnancy, and postnatal care.

Before planning pregnancy by having unprotected sex, ideally, men must wait for at least 6 months and women for at least 2 months post-exposure to the virus with or without symptoms or after travelling to an endemic area. The virus is transmitted not only by mosquito bites but also by sexual contact.

According to the CDC (Centre for Disease Control), animal studies have shown that sexual transmission causes more damage to the developing foetus than infection acquired by the pregnant mother through mosquito transmission.&nbsp;

The incubation period and the period during which the infected mosquito can carry and spread the infection are still under research. Most of the individuals affected by the disease will be asymptomatic or symptoms may be mild like fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain.&nbsp;

Zika virus transmission to the foetus can happen at any time during pregnancy and may result in birth defects like microcephaly, defective brain development, and neurological issues. A child born with minimal birth defects may develop vision disorder, hearing loss, and impaired growth in the future. There may be other pregnancy-related issues,&nbsp;like miscarriage and stillbirth. Hence, it is very important to stay protected throughout the pregnancy. Vaccines and medicines for the virus are not yet developed and are still under research.

Individuals residing in the Zika endemic area would have developed antibodies against the virus. Testing of antibodies doesn’t differentiate between current infection and past infection. The women can test for antibodies before planning pregnancy and compare the values in case there is an infection or exposure post-pregnancy. If the values are negative before pregnancy and the antibodies&nbsp;develop&nbsp;after pregnancy, it may be possibly due to a recent Zika virus infection. But if the antibodies are present even before the pregnancy, then we will not be able to decide if the woman is safe to become pregnant at present, since it is not possible to conclude if the antibody has been raised due to a recent infection, or a past infection.

The antibodies may also be positive due to cross-reactivity with infection of a similar family of virus-like dengue virus, leading to false positivity. Detection of RNA PCR may sometimes give false negative reports due to the presence of less viral load. So, a negative report mandatorily doesn’t eliminate the presence of infection. Hence, it is important to be protected throughout pregnancy.&nbsp;

Prevention includes protection from mosquito bites by using air conditioners at home and workplace, sleeping under mosquito nets, and installing mesh windows and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering the premises. Wearing long-sleeved dresses and full pants covering arms and legs, applying permethrin over the dress will add extra protection.

Using EPA-approved repellents with any one of the active components like DEET, IR3535, 2-undecanone, picaridin, and eucalyptus oil is safe during pregnancy. Reapplication of the repellents as per manufacturer instruction is important. Mosquito breeding sites around the premises, like stagnant water from flowerpots, pools, unused tyres, and buckets, must be cleared at regular intervals.

If a pregnant woman is living in an area where the Zika virus is not endemic, then it is recommended not to travel to an area with active Zika virus transmission. If the partner of the pregnant woman lives or has travelled to an area with active transmission of the Zika virus, then it is recommended that they use a barrier method to have sexual intercourse or abstain from sexual contact during pregnancy.

According to the CDC (Centre for Disease Control), animal studies have shown that sexual transmission causes more damage to the developing foetus than infection acquired by the pregnant mother through mosquito transmission. The incubation period and the period during which the infected mosquito can carry and spread the infection are still under research. Most of the individuals affected by the disease will be asymptomatic or symptoms may be mild like fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain. Zika virus transmission to the foetus can happen at any time during pregnancy and may result in birth defects like microcephaly, defective brain development, and neurological issues. A child born with minimal birth defects may develop vision disorder, hearing loss, and impaired growth in the future. There may be other pregnancy-related issues, like miscarriage and stillbirth. If the values are negative before pregnancy and the antibodies develop after pregnancy, it may be possibly due to a recent Zika virus infection. Zika virus and pregnancy: Importance of preconception counselling and Zika testing for expecting women

The internet has apparently found a dupe for Ozempic, which was originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes but many use it for its weight loss benefits despite several medical warnings. Many TikTokers are going viral online because they claim that they have found a cheaper and supposedly "safer" alternative to the diabetes drug. Yes, I am talking about - Rice-zempic - which is currently taking social media platforms by storm.

The big questions are - Does it actually work? Is it safe? Should you try it? Before we discuss its effectiveness, let's find out what the trend is all about.

Despite its high cost and potential side effects, Ozempic has become a go-to choice of celebrities for weight loss, all thanks to the drastic and rapid results the drug offers. Meanwhile, netizens have been obsessed with finding the perfect dupe for the Type 2 diabetes drug and some are claiming that they have finally found one - Rice-zempic.&nbsp;

Rice-zempic, as the name suggests, is a concoction made of rice, water and lemon, which apparently offers weight loss results comparable to Ozempic without the hefty price tag. While Ozempic costs $935 monthly and needs a doctor’s prescription, Rice-zempic just requires three common kitchen ingredients.

How to make the concoction?

All you need to do is add unwashed rice and lemon juice in warm water and wait for 20 to 30 minutes. You can also leave the mixture overnight and consume it the next morning. &nbsp;

What are the claims?

TikTokers are claiming that they feel less hungry throughout the day after consuming the concoction and have lost up to 14 pounds in seven days.&nbsp;

Are the claims true?

To break it down, there is no scientific evidence that Rice-zempic significantly aids weight loss. While rice water has some nutritional benefits, it may not accelerate your weight loss journey. Since the concoction has lemon which is full of antioxidants, it may help reduce weight gain but you can get the same benefits from just hot lemon water. Rice-zempic can make for a perfect morning drink but don't get your hopes high because it simply doesn't have Ozempic's hormonal power.

So how can you actually lose weight?

If you ask me, I always vouch for intermittent fasting whenever it comes to effective weight loss diet plans. Timing my meals has helped me stay in shape and shed extra kilos after every indulgent meal. Additionally, I like to do cardio for 30 minutes daily and start the morning with green tea or hot lemon water.&nbsp;

You must have heard of brisk walk or jogging, but have you ever heard of fart walk? Well, the latest fitness TikTok trend is for everyone who struggles with bloating, indigestion, gas, heartburn and other digestive problems.&nbsp;

Fart walk, coined by Toronto-based cookbook author Mairlyn Smith, is exactly what it sounds like - a post-meal stroll you must take to release intestinal gas and improve digestion. After a high-fibre meal, a quick walk around your garden or your balcony can do wonders for your health, says Smith.&nbsp;

In a TikTok video, the author shared that she and her husband head out every night 60 minutes after dinner for their fart walk. "Now, why do we do this? Well, we eat a lot of fibre, so we have gas—everybody does—and, yeah, you fart while you walk. So that’s why I named it that."

Wondering if it actually works or not? Well, according to several studies and experts, a post-meal walk helps the digestive system, also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, break down food and absorb nutrients. In simple words, it is a little exercise for your GI tract.

Here's how fart walking improves digestion!

Better gut motility
Walking helps propel food through the GI tract more efficiently, according to a journal titled Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity. Studies also suggest that fart walks speed up gastric emptying, the process of moving food from the stomach to the small intestine.

Improved blood sugar levels
American Diabetes Association suggests that 30-minute walks every day can regulate blood sugar levels and help those with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

Bloating
A major cause for bloating is gas buildup and fart walk can help release the trapped gas. Walking also creates internal pressure in the stomach and helps with the release of gas.

Things to remember!

<ul>
	<li>Start walking about 40 to 60 minutes after eating.</li>
	<li>Take it slow and easy. Don't walk fast as it can cause discomfort.</li>
	<li>Drink plenty of water after the walk and hydrate yourself.</li>
	<li>Walk for at least 20 to 30 minutes to get the best results.</li>

It was a dream wedding, complete with picturesque outdoor setting, white lace gown and a delectable cake. The perfect day for golden retrievers - Bree and Bond - to tie the knot in front of their closest human and canine friends.

Pet weddings are on the rise in China, where government policies have had little success in encouraging more humans to wed in this fast-ageing society where the population is declining and marriage and birth rates remain low.

The popularity of pets and an increasing willingness to splurge on them are driving the trend. Spending on furry companions in 2023 rose 3.2% to 279.3 billion yuan ($38.41 billion) from a year earlier, industry figures show.

"People have weddings. Why can't dogs have weddings?" Bree's owner Rye Ling said after escorting his female pet down the aisle, where she exchanged vows promising to always share treats and play with her husband Bond.

As of 2023, there were more than 116 million cats and dogs in urban China, according to figures by research firm Acuity Knowledge Partners. If distributed evenly across China's urban population, roughly one in eight

Chinese people own a cat or a dog, with a majority of owners under 40, according to the research firm.

Ling and his girlfriend Gigi Chen, who said they're in no rush to get married themselves, meticulously planned the canine ceremony for months, arranging professional photographers, designing wedding booklets and ordering a custom-made, 800-yuan cake complete with toppers that resemble Bree and Bond.

Yang Tao, whose Shanghai-based pet bakery prepared the cake, said she was initially surprised that customers wanted wedding cakes for their dogs.

"I think there will be more and more dog weddings," Yang said, adding that she has already catered several similar ceremonies since her bakery was launched in 2022.

"We have already received an order for a few months from now ... and that's for a dog wedding."

Ling said he hoped the ceremony would give Bree and Bond a "sense of ritual". Ling, who said he wanted only one child, also hopes to welcome puppies soon.

Alzheimer's disease generally presents with short-term memory impairment due to selective vulnerability of medial temporal lobes in the brain. Episodic memory loss is the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and subsequently, the disease spreads to other association cortices or networks in the brain which results in executive dysfunction resulting in problem-solving and planning difficulties and further resulting in navigation and language disturbances.&nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;
Ideally, people subside memory loss as an indicator of ageing, but it is also a sign of Alzheimer’s, and millions of people are affected by it around the world. In patients suffering from Alzheimer's, their abilities deteriorate which leads to cognitive difficulties severe enough to interfere with day-to-day activities.

Early Signs and Symptoms

Early stages often consist of symptoms that are mistaken for ageing. However, it is important to recognize these early signs for timely intervention:

Memory Loss
The most common sign of Alzheimer's is memory loss, especially forgetting something that you recently learned. Other symptoms consist of forgetting important dates, asking for the same information repeatedly, etc. It is the most common type of dementia.

Impaired Executive Function
The executive function consists of a variety of cognitive processes that include planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and self-control.&nbsp;

Other Symptoms&nbsp;
Other than memory loss and impaired executive function there are other symptoms to look for:

Difficulty Completing Familiar Tasks
People suffering from Alzheimer's face difficulty in once-easy tasks. This can include cooking, driving to a known location, or managing finances.

Confusion with Time or Place
Losing track of dates, time, and season in common. People with Alzheimer’s tend to forget where they are or how they got there.

Trouble Understanding Visual and Spatial Relationships
Problem in vision is one of the signs of Alzheimer's. This includes difficulty in reading, judging distance, and determining colour. It can be a problem in driving.

New Problems with Words in Speaking or Writing
People with Alzheimer's struggle to join a conversation, they tend to stop in the middle of a conversation and then have no idea how to continue. They also struggle with vocabulary or have trouble naming familiar objects

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of Alzheimer's is still not fully understood, but it is a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors.

Genetic Factors
Certain genes increase the risk of development of Alzheimer's. For example, presence of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is associated with an increase in risk of Alzheimer's.

Lifestyle and Heart Health
There is growing evidence that factors related to heart increase&nbsp;the risk of Alzheimer's. It includes a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol and poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.

Age
The greatest known risk for Alzheimer's is increasing age. Most cases are among people above age of 65. After age of 65, risk of Alzheimer's doubles after every 5 years and after 85, risk reaches nearly one-third.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life of an individual and family. If your loved one is facing any of the symptoms immediately consult a medical professional. Diagnosis involves:
•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Medical History review
•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Neuropsychological tests
•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Neurological examination

Treatment Options

While there is no cure, but still there are several treatments available to manage the symptoms. Medications like cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are advised to improve the symptoms for a specific period. Non-drug treatments like memory training, cognitive training and structured environment are also beneficial.

Individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s, and their care takers must adapt new ways of living. Setting up routines and creating a supportive environment are important. One of the early signs of Alzheimer’s is memory loss and compromised executive function. Seeking advice from healthcare professional is crucial.&nbsp;

Experiencing memory loss and impaired executive function? They could be symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

As India braces for the onset of monsoon, it faces another significant health challenge — lymphatic filariasis. In the fluctuating temperatures and the subtropical regions of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other neighbouring states, this debilitating disease quietly emerges as a critical public health concern.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) or Elephantiasis is a disease caused by parasitic worms transmitted through mosquito bites. It affects millions in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Dr N K Ganguly, Former Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), told WION, "Vector-borne diseases like lymphatic filariasis are intricately linked with the monsoon season and fluctuating temperatures. Individuals in subtropical and tropical regions may contract the disease and end up suffering from chronic conditions such as lymphatic vessel obstruction, leading to fluid accumulation in the limbs (lymphoedema), hydrocele (swelling of the scrotum), chyluria (presence of lymphatic fluid in urine).”

The disease not only causes physical suffering but also significantly impacts livelihoods. Dr. Ganguly further noted, "Patients with lymphoedema often experience recurrent infections that can confine them to bed for days, impairing their ability to work and earn a living. This cycle of disability perpetuates poverty and hampers economic development."

India aims to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health concern by 2027 through integrated approaches involving mass drug administration and effective vector control measures. As the country confronts the challenges posed by a shifting climate, urgent actions are necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of people residing in LF-endemic regions.

Climate change exacerbates the spread of lymphatic filariasis by creating favourable conditions for disease vectors, such as mosquitoes. Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns expand mosquito habitats and accelerate transmission cycles.

Dr. Bhupendra Tripathi, Deputy Director, Infectious Diseases and Vaccine Delivery, at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, told WION, "Prevention and vector control form the cornerstones of the Government of India’s enhanced strategy for LF elimination. The government's disease prevention strategy includes the annual Mass Drug Administration (MDA) of anti-filarial medicines to eligible populations, excluding pregnant women, children less than 2 years of age, and severely ill individuals, free of cost."

Dr. Bhupendra added, "This is supported by consistent vector control activities throughout the year. Enhancing MDA coverage, ensuring treatment compliance and taking protective measures are pivotal to interrupting disease transmission and alleviating the health and socio-economic burden in impacted regions. Few endemic states will be undertaking the Mass Drug Administration round starting August 10, 2024. It is imperative that people participate wholeheartedly in these rounds and safeguard themselves and their communities."

India has been seeing a rise in immersive art centres because the art here is not only deeply fluid (hence interpretable by all) but multi-sensory and experiential. As a creative process engaging with all the human senses, immersive art conjures up a quiet language of new meanings and understanding. A sign of our times, these art centres are now a focal point of our cultural landscape with their numbers seeing a new upsurge.&nbsp;

<h2>Arthshila Centre</h2>

“I see immersive art playing a significant role in the future of the art world, evolving to become more innovative, experiential, and inclusive,” says Setika Singh, Executive Director of Takshila Foundation, which recently launched the immersive art centre called Arthshila in Indian capital city, New Delhi. Arthshila has outposts in Ahmedabad and Shantiniketan, apart from New Delhi and will be soon launched in Patna and Goa.&nbsp;

Singh reckons that with the advancement of technology, immersive art experiences will become increasingly sophisticated, offering new possibilities for creativity and expression. “They will continue to challenge perceptions, inspire dialogue, and foster connections within the arts community, shaping the future of artistic expression and engagement,” she adds.

<img alt="Arthshila" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="8adc2aae-5761-4350-9338-8fc47e6427aa" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/HORIZONS%20-%202024-07-04T175552.288.jpg" />

<h2>Kathika Cultural Centre</h2>

As a new wave of art spaces takes centre stage in our cultural calendars, there’s reason to believe that a participatory spirit lies at the heart of their popularity. “Immersive art involves direct engagement of its observer. Through its design and execution, it creates an environment where the senses of the observers are heightened and they are given a platform to directly participate in the art,” says Atul Khanna, conservationist and founder of Kathika, New Delhi, a one-of-a-kind museum and cultural centre. It has recently launched the ‘Kathika Cultural Experience,’ where you can feel connected to the art and the artist personally.&nbsp;

Khanna believes that the immersive arts make use of displays and installations that stimulate the auditory, tactile, and olfactory senses. With museums and art centres using more and more immersive art installations, he points out that visitors are no longer just observers, but participants in the artwork.&nbsp;

<img alt="Kathika" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d3ba6843-b6ab-436c-a9f0-ffb7709f96e9" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/HORIZONS%20-%202024-07-04T175020.908.jpg" />

The experiences pave the way for a more personal connection with the art. “Traditional art does not allow people to physically interact with it. Hence, immersive art is gaining popularity because it leaves a profound impact on people by stimulating their emotions, sparking creativity and providing them the opportunity to escape from reality and enter the world of virtual reality,” he says.

<h2>Why Immersive Arts Are Now More Popular Than Ever</h2>

There are multiple reasons why the immersive arts genre is making its presence felt more deeply. Founders attribute this buzz to a host of factors. Setika Singh says, “There’s a desire to create inclusive and accessible spaces for artistic expression. Additionally, immersive art centres serve as platforms for promoting cultural exchange, fostering creativity, and nurturing the next generation of artists and audiences, contributing to the vibrant arts ecosystem in India.”

The diversity offered by the new crop of immersive art centres, including Arthshila and Kathika is not only refreshing but also connects in meaningful ways with a younger batch of patrons.&nbsp;For instance, Arthshila Art Centre hosts a range of exhibitions, workshops, performances, and screenings and curates interactive events so as to cast a wider net among different categories of audiences.&nbsp;

At the Kathika Cultural Centre and Museum, patrons can witness spellbinding 'jugalbandi' and kathak performances in an unorthodox way. They can experience the performances as an immersive art form by participating in them on various occasions. The Kathika Museum also offers visitors the space to interact with displayed objects, such as handicrafts and learn about them in their traditional setup.

Immersive art centres are flexible, unconventional and constantly reconfiguring the limits of art practices in the modern cultural milieu. They are also creating a space for reflection, stimulating the senses, provoking the mind, evoking emotions, and fostering deep connections. As Singh puts it aptly: “They create memorable and transformative – often healing experiences that challenge perceptions, inspire creativity, and nurture well-being.”

Decoding why people are increasingly interested in immersive art centres in India

- By&nbsp;Arushi Sethi Shah

A recent report published by advisory firm Gallup reveals that a staggering 86% of Indian employees are either “struggling” or “suffering” in their present job roles. Another recent survey by Great Place to Work India pointed out that roughly one out of four Indian employees face difficulties in speaking up about burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues at their workplace. As per World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, globally $1 trillion is the economic cost of productivity loss annually due to mental health challenges of working professionals!&nbsp;

Such statistics not only paint a grim, alarming picture regarding the current state of well-being of our workforce, but also highlight the pressing need for today’s organisations to prioritise their employees’ mental health.

To that end, here are a few practical ways how modern-day organisations can work towards building and sustaining a supportive work environment which is conducive to higher employee well-being:&nbsp;

- In the workplace realm, building safe and open spaces is made possible easily by embracing a ‘top-down’ approach, wherein the senior leadership leads by example to shed stigma, setting the tone for mental health awareness and demonstrating the fact that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Leaders who truly care about mental health must become champions of the cause themselves; because when leaders talk openly about mental health, show empathy and trust, and normalize a “let’s converse” culture in the workplace, it automatically encourages employees to share/discuss their concerns freely with managers and colleagues without the fears of being judged or shamed.

-&nbsp; In the post-pandemic world, flexible working arrangements such as remote or hybrid work have become the new norm, allowing employees greater control over their work-life balance. While this paradigm shift signals a great start, progressive organizations can move ahead further in the right direction by crafting policies that encourage workers to disconnect (be offline) after work hours and take regular breaks with paid leaves and vacations. Additionally, they should integrate psychometric assessment of employees into the existing hiring and onboarding processes to be able to offer emotional support and/or train them right from the start (or as and when required).&nbsp;

- Other initiatives like offering health insurance benefits to employees including mental health coverage, introducing regular collaboration-oriented team-building activities, and rewards or incentive programs (can include innovative ones like gym memberships, meditation app subscriptions etc.) to appreciate and recognise employees’ contributions and make them feel valued can go a long way in creating positive workplaces. &nbsp;

&nbsp;- Last, but not least, a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that takes into account the 360-degree mental wellness needs of employees can prove to be a game-changer in terms of optimising the “employee well-being quotient”. These programmes should be introduced by organisations in partnership with reputable mental health service providers, and shall ideally encompass expert counselling and therapy, learning and development (L&amp;D) modules, well-being workshops or webinars on relevant topics like stress management, emotional resilience, et al, and value-added services and resources for addressing concerns and empowering employees.&nbsp;

Final Thoughts&nbsp;

Prioritising and supporting employee mental health creates a win-win – it helps employees flourish and fosters a more productive, happier and successful organisation with lower absenteeism, higher employee retention, and improved performance. By taking concrete action steps as outlined above, employers can nurture a supportive work culture and unlock the fullest potential of their workforce, which in turn directly translates to business success.

Workplace Mental Health: Creating a supportive environment for employee wellbeing

Indian author and activist Arundhati Roy has been awarded the PEN Pinter Prize 2024. The annual award was set up in 2009 by English PEN in memory of Nobel laureate playwright Harold Pinter.

Roy is a Booker Prize-winning author and has written about human rights issues in India as well as war and capitalism globally.

The author will be honoured at a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library on October 10 later this year. She will also deliver an address.

The annual award is given to a writer of outstanding literary merit residing in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or the Commonwealth, who in the words of Harold Pinter’s Nobel Prize in Literature speech, casts an ‘unflinching, unswerving’ gaze upon the world and shows a ‘fierce intellectual determination … to define the real truth of our lives and our societies’.

This year’s award jury comprised English PEN chair Ruth Borthwick, actor Khalid Abdalla, and writer Roger Robinson.&nbsp;

Previous award winners include prominent authors like Michael Rosen, Margaret Atwood, Malorie Blackman, Salman Rushdie, Tom Stoppard and Carol Ann Duffy.

Roy has said that she is "delighted" to have been awarded this year's PEN Pinter Prize.

English PEN chair Ruth Borthwick praised Roy for telling "urgent stories of injustice with wit and beauty. While India remains an important focus, she is truly an internationalist thinker, and her powerful voice is not to be silenced."

On winning the prize, Roy said: "I wish Harold Pinter were with us today to write about the almost incomprehensible turn the world is taking. Since he isn't, some of us must do our utmost to fill his shoes."

Aren’t we all a little guilty of sharing our screens with kids at home, the moment they start pressuring us to play with them when we have truckloads of work to finish, or an assignment to submit, or dishes to wash? Well, reports now suggest that constant screen time that kids are exposed to, is causing myopia among children.&nbsp;

We got in touch with several experts in this field to share their experiences and to understand how to prevent myopia in children that are today surrounded with technology at homes, schools and everywhere they go.

Here's what they have to say:

Dr. Neha Naiksatam, Consultant Pediatrician, Apollo Clinic in Koramangala said, “Many children are suffering from increasing rates of myopia due to the way they live in the present-day world. For instance, contemporary kids spend much of their time behind screens, which has led to the increased prevalence of short-sightedness among them. Also, most kids these days do not have time to play outside, so they don’t benefit from the natural sunlight which is required for good eyesight.”

Dr. Sweta Patel, Ophthalmologist, Aster Whitefield in Bangalore added, “Many factors play role in myopia among children like genetics, lack of exposure to natural light, limited outdoor activity, more digital screen time, prolonged near vision tasks. While genetics play a key role, environmental factors like spending less time outdoors and more time focused on near tasks like reading and excessive screen time are believed to be significant contributors. Exposure to blue light emitted from these devices might also be a risk factor.”

She added that kids are surrounded with technology these days but it would be ideal for kids with age less than two years to have no screen time. She said, “Exposure to natural light stimulates the release of dopamine in the retina, which may help inhibit the elongation of the eyeball associated with myopia. Creating opportunities for outdoor exploration, sports, and nature walks will foster a balanced lifestyle that supports healthy vision development.”

Dr. Neha agreed that parental control over technology and screens of all kinds is super important. “Parents should only allow an hour of combined screening – such as on television sets, mobile phones, laptops, and iPads among others. Also, playing outdoors should be given a top preference. Make playing outdoors a part of their normal routine so that kids can play in the sun. Exposure to sun aids in controlling the size of eyeballs. It also interferes with the development of short-sightedness.”

Dr. Sweta added, “Limit the screen time and ensure the child gets frequent breaks while watching a screen. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, where a child takes breaks every 20 minutes to focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This can help relax eye muscles during screen time.”

Myopia in children: Tackling vision issues with suggestions by experts

Chanel held its haute couture show at the Paris Palais Garnier Opera House on Tuesday, displaying a lineup of sparkly evening wear that ranged from trim, embellished tweed ensembles to voluminous, silk taffeta capes.

Models emerged from the tiny doors of the historic building's private boxes and marched down the corridors, where the audience was seated on plush, red chairs under a low, mirrored ceiling.

They paraded jackets covered with bows, bustier dresses with cinched waists and fitted coats; sandals were open-toed, with short, crystal-coated heels with a ring of pearls.

A traditional bride closed the show, in a floor-sweeping gown with long, puffy sleeves and a train that trailed behind.

The show was held as the French luxury house enters a transition period and gears up for a design reset, following the surprise announcement earlier this month of the departure of longtime creative director Virginie Viard, who had worked alongside Karl Lagerfeld for decades before succeeding him after his death in 2019.

Chanel takes haute couture fashion to Paris Opera house

Awkward! Chanel was set to hold its haute couture show on Tuesday just three weeks after the very abrupt departure of creative director Virginie Viard after almost 30 years with the brand.&nbsp;Viard worked alongside the legendary Karl Lagerfeld for years before taking over at the helm after his death in 2019.&nbsp;

She oversaw record sales of nearly $20 billion last year. But a crisis had been brewing for months, with sceptical pouts on the front row and murmurs that her shows were growing repetitive.

The situation exploded in May when a mid-season "cruise" show in Marseille failed to impress fans -- not helped by the unseasonably cold weather on the Cote d'Azur.&nbsp;

"What the hell is going on? Bad cuts and fabrics? The shoes?!" protested one internet user. Another called it "lazy".&nbsp;

A month later, Viard's departure was announced in less than elegant form -- revealed to the specialist press in the middle of the night.&nbsp; It was later revealed that Viard would not even be present for her last couture show, which would instead by handled by her team.&nbsp;

Paris-based designer Lutz Huelle told AFP he sympathised with her situation.&nbsp; "Regardless of what anyone thinks about her work of the last five years, she found herself in the far-from-simple situation of having to, from one day to the next, replace one of the biggest and best-loved designers at the biggest brand in the world -- a literally impossible task," he said.&nbsp;"I can't imagine Karl working with someone for all these years without that person doing a great job," he added.&nbsp;

- Discreet presence -

Viard's takeover was seen as a temporary appointment at the time, although she was only the third creative director in Chanel's 114-year history after Lagerfeld and its founder Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel.&nbsp;

Always dressed simply, in a T-shirt and black trousers, she was a far more discreet presence than "The Kaiser", known for his provocative statements.&nbsp;Her shows were much less spectacular than Lagerfeld's extravaganzas and commentators were often highly critical of her cuts and taste.&nbsp;

That never put off buyers, who still flocked to Chanel stores -- sales were up 14.6 per cent to $19.7 billion last year.&nbsp; Ready-to-wear sales increased 23 percent during Viard's five-year tenure.&nbsp;

"It underscored the fact the brand is much stronger than the individual designer," wrote Business of Fashion.&nbsp;

The fashion world now turns to its favourite pastime -- speculation over who will succeed.&nbsp;Among the names circulating are Hedi Slimane (Celine), known for his rocker aesthetic, raising the possibility of a move into menswear for the first time. &nbsp;

Other possibilities are French designers Marine Serre or Simon Porte Jacquemus, who have both found great success with their own brands.&nbsp;Pierpaolo Piccioli, who left Valentino four months ago, and Britain's Sarah Burton, who designed Princess Catherine's wedding dress, are also seen as possible candidates.

Her shows were much less spectacular than Lagerfeld's extravaganzas and commentators were often highly critical of her cuts and taste. That never put off buyers, who still flocked to Chanel stores -- sales were up 14.6 per cent to $19.7 billion last year. Ready-to-wear sales increased 23 percent during Viard's five-year tenure. "It underscored the fact the brand is much stronger than the individual designer," wrote Business of Fashion. The fashion world now turns to its favourite pastime -- speculation over who will succeed. Among the names circulating are Hedi Slimane (Celine), known for his rocker aesthetic, raising the possibility of a move into menswear for the first time. Other possibilities are French designers Marine Serre or Simon Porte Jacquemus, who have both found great success with their own brands. Pierpaolo Piccioli, who left Valentino four months ago, and Britain's Sarah Burton, who designed Princess Catherine's wedding dress, are also seen as possible candidates.

International Day of Yoga 2024: Yoga, an old discipline that has its roots in India, has become quite famous all over the world. It is not only considered a physical exercise but also a holistic approach to well-being. Yoga offers health advantages, including one's mental health.

Yoga exercises, also called asanas, include ethical precepts (yamas and niyamas), meditation (dhyana), and breath control (pranayama). Asanas help the body release tension. Controlled breathing exercises help improve oxygen flow to the brain, which eventually helps people relax and cope with stress and anxiety. Meditation also enables people to take charge of their thoughts and feelings. Together, these components create a comprehensive system that addresses mental health from multiple angles, says Dr Rajmadhangi, MBBS, MD-Gen Medicine, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chennai.

Yoga for Anxiety

1. &nbsp; &nbsp;Stress Reduction: Yoga helps lower cortisol levels, which are frequently raised in those who suffer from anxiety. Asanas and pranayama help with relaxation.

2. &nbsp; &nbsp;Mindfulness: With the help of yoga and meditation, people can worry less about the past or the future and concentrate on the here and now. Mindfulness also helps in ending the anxiety cycle.&nbsp;

3. &nbsp; &nbsp;Breath Control: Breathing exercises lower heart rate and foster calmness. It helps deal with the anxiety-induced fight-or-flight response.

4. &nbsp; &nbsp;Improved Sleep: Yoga practice can help improve sleep quality, which often gets affected by anxiety. Better sleep helps regulate mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Yoga for Depression

Depression is a mental health condition characterised by persistent sadness, lack of interest, and a range of physical symptoms. Here's how yoga can be an effective complementary treatment for depression:

1. &nbsp; &nbsp;Mood Enhancement: Serotonin and endorphins are neurotransmitters which are linked to happiness and well-being. These hormones are produced in greater quantity when doing yoga, which in turn helps in improving overall mood of a person.&nbsp;

2. &nbsp; &nbsp;Poor Energy Levels: Maintaining a yoga routine can help fight the sluggishness and poor energy that come with depression.

3. &nbsp; &nbsp;Social Connection: People usually find communities with which they practice yoga. This helps them build social connections.&nbsp;

Yoga for Other Mental Health Conditions

Other than anxiety and depression, yoga helps in managing other mental health conditions such as PTSD, ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder:

1. &nbsp; &nbsp;Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Accoridng to some studies, yoga can also help reduce hyperarousal, a major PTSD symptom, and balance the autonomic nervous system.&nbsp;

2. &nbsp; &nbsp;ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder): Yoga helps people with ADHD better control their symptoms by helping them improve focus and reducing impulsivity.&nbsp;

3. &nbsp; &nbsp;Bipolar Disorder: Although yoga cannot treat bipolar disorder on its own, it can support medical and psychiatric therapy by lowering stress and providing mood stability.&nbsp;

Integrating Yoga into Mental Health Care

There are ways one can maximise the benefits of yoga for mental health.

1. &nbsp; &nbsp;Consistency: Consistency is key. Spare an hour every day for a short yoga session for best results.&nbsp;

2. &nbsp; &nbsp;Personalisation: Different styles of yoga (e.g., Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin) can give different benefits. It's important to personalise the asanas according to your needs.&nbsp;

3. &nbsp; &nbsp;Holistic Approach: Combine yoga with other treatments such as therapy and medication as it is effective when used as part of a comprehensive mental health care plan.

Yoga is a special and efficient technique to deal with sadness, anxiety, and other mental health issues. It can also help improve an individual's overall quality of life by assisting them in finding inner peace, resilience, and healing.
