China approaches $1 trillion trade surplus as Donald Trump makes a comeback

The collapsed cryptocurrency company FTX is suing Binance and its former CEO Changpeng Zhao, alleging that $1.8bn was “fraudulently transferred” by FTX management to Binance and its executives according to a detailed report by The Guardian.

The lawsuit relates to Binance’s sale of its stake in Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX, which it acquired in 2019 but then negotiated to sell back to FTX in July 2021, The Guardian report explained further.

According to the lawsuit, FTX’s Alameda Research division directly funded the share repurchase using tokens which had a then fair market value of $1.76bn. Alameda, the lawsuit alleges, was insolvent at the time of buying the shares and could not therefore afford to fund the transaction and it should not have been allowed to proceed.

“By this lawsuit, the Plaintiffs seek to recover, for the benefit of FTX’s creditors, at least $1.76 billion that was fraudulently transferred to Binance and its executives at the FTX creditors’ expense, as well as compensatory and punitive damages to be determined at trial,” the administrators for the FTX estate said in a filing made on Sunday in the US state of Delaware.

The CME derivates exchange offers bitcoin futures contracts and is a popular way for institutions in the US to make bets on the future price of bitcoin. Velde told CNBC that on Friday CME premiums for ether and bitcoin averaged 14.5 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively. Ahead of the election, Velde says these premiums sat at 7 per cent, and had spent a majority of the past half year hovering slightly below 10 per cent.

“The recent surge is a meaningful deviation higher emphasizing the bullish flows of late,” he added, noting that yields more or less stabilized well into the double digits after the election became clear.

The industry's staunchest bulls and renowned strategist, Ed Yardeni, is concerned that he has been overly pessimistic in predictions of a "roaring 2020s" that is yet to come. However, the fed's latest meeting did nothing to tamp back the positive sentiment in risk markets. For now, the narrative is bullish. A proxy of so-called risk-on metrics saw its biggest weekly inflow since 2016. that is, incidentally, the year Trump scored his first presidential victory.

Amid bitcoin's surge, the largest ETF holding the coin claimed its biggest one-day haul since its inception in January this year. Even Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency created as a joke in 2013 that considers Elon Musk among its most ardent and vocal supporters, hit a new high.
