Former Rivian executive Kjell Gruner has been appointed head of Volkswagen's American operations. Pablo Di Si, who had held the position since 2022, stepped down and Gruner has taken over as the new editor of pbs News Hour. Volkswagen is navigating a turbulent EV market and ongoing labor negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and is coming off months of political upheaval as the Volkswagen board reshuffled its leadership.

Rivian’s previous chief commercial officer and head of business growth, Gruner brings electric vehicle (EV) strategy experience to Volkswagen’s U.S. division. He previously spent 12 years at Porsche AG and DaimlerChrysler AG, leading a global business in North America and providing a strong pedigree to lead Volkswagen's American business.

Volkswagen’s troubles run through various fronts. Automakers in the U.S. are unsure what regulatory landscape they’ll inhabit next under President-elect Donald Trump, who has promised to wipe away the still USD 7,500 consumer tax credit for EV purchases. But the tax credit has been thus far what keeps the industry going, and taking it away would likely slow the adoption of EVs. If any policy changes are particularly impactful, that means some versions of Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric SUV currently qualify for the credit.

Volkswagen is trialing hard in its passenger car division globally, hitting the brakes on its annual outlook for 2023. Mass layoffs and plant closures in Germany are also on the automaker’s labor chief’s radar, as is broad industry trouble.

Volkswagen’s move to hire Gruner as it pushes ahead with the EV market comes on the heels of a new USD 5.8 billion joint venture with Rivian to build EV architecture and software. The company could stand to benefit from his experience in the EV startup as it makes its move to electrification.

In the U.S., Volkswagen faces heated labor talks, too: Workers at its Tennessee plant voted in April to become unionised, with 73 percent backing unionisation. Secure the contract of course, this is only on top of other priorities in the region.

Gruner’s leadership will be pivotal as Volkswagen balances its EV ambitions, labor relations, and adapting to an evolving regulatory environment in one of its most crucial markets.

Volkswagen names former Rivian executive as head of U.S. operations amid industry challenges

Stellantis has announced the rollout of its new STLA Frame platform for gasoline, hybrid and electric vehicles. But both the automaker and the production delay of its highly anticipated Ram electric pickup also illuminate the obstacles the EV transition faces. STLA Frame is a flexible design, like a ‘skateboard,’ that combines critical electrical and mechanical components to create the underlying platform for the full size truck and SUVs. Stellantis is able to adapt production to market demands in a variety of powertrain technologies, this flexibility.

"We believe we have a plan which is still working to execute that plan, even in the very difficult conditions in which the industry is being confronted," Carlos Tavares, CEO, told reporters. Production of the electric Ram pickup, which was scheduled to roll in 2021, will now start in the first half of 2025, he said, out of concern about quality.

The delay comes as automakers struggle to move faster on EV demand. Both General Motors (GM) and Ford have committed heavily to all-electric platforms, but Ford is banking on hybrid flexibility, a viability that is especially crucial in an industry where Chinese automakers like BAIC and Chery are increasingly popular. Fifty percent electric passenger and light-duty vehicle sales and 100 percent electric sales in Europe and for more than half of Stellantis’ U.S. sales of both passenger and light-duty vehicles by 2030 are the targets the automaker outlined.

That puts the USD 7,500 electric vehicle tax credit on the chopping block, with President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team reportedly targeting to scrap it as an incentive for buyers. Right now, Jeep Grand Cherokee owners with Stellantis plug-in hybrids are qualified for part credit.

But Tavares has felt the heat of plummeting North American sales and stubbornly high vehicle inventories, made strategic changes nearly a year ago to try to change that. Stellantis historically has been a profit center for North America because of Jeep and Ram models popular in the region. But its shares have plummeted around 40 per cent this year.

Up to 500 miles of range and 14,000 pound towing capacity is achieved with the STLA Frame platform, which initially debuted in Ram and Jeep vehicles. It is designed to support battery-electric, hydrogen, and extended-range electric powertrains, underscoring Stellantis' focus on adaptability amid an unpredictable market.

The automaker is pushing forward with a diversified approach, seeking to balance immediate market needs with long-term electrification goals.

Stellantis unveils flexible EV platform, delays Ram electric pickup launch

Ford Motor Company has announced a substantial restructuring of its European operations, revealing plans to eliminate approximately 14% of its workforce in the region, primarily targeting positions in Germany and the United Kingdom. The decision underscores the profound challenges facing traditional automotive manufacturers as they navigate the complex transition to electric vehicle (EV) production.

The job cuts, affecting approximately 4,000 employees, represent approximately 2.3% of Ford's global workforce of 174,000. This strategic move comes in response to significant market challenges, including weak electric vehicle demand, insufficient government support, and intensifying competition from emerging automotive manufacturers.

The announcement highlights the broader industrial transformation occurring in Europe's automotive sector. Ford's sales in the region have declined dramatically, with a 17.9% drop through September, significantly outpacing the industry-wide decline of 6.1%. This performance reflects the mounting pressures facing traditional automakers in an increasingly competitive and technologically demanding market.

European governments, particularly Germany, have been criticised for their inconsistent approach to electric vehicle transition. Berlin's decision to terminate EV subsidies in December 2023 has substantially impacted market dynamics, with German EV sales plummeting by 28.6% in the first nine months of the year. Ford's chief financial officer, John Lawler, explicitly called for more comprehensive policy support, emphasising the need for public investments in charging infrastructure and meaningful incentives.

The restructuring is part of Ford's ongoing painful transformation in the European market. The company had previously announced 3,800 job cuts in February 2023 and is proceeding with the closure of its Saarlouis plant in Germany, further demonstrating the scale of its strategic realignment.

This move mirrors similar actions by other automotive manufacturers, including Nissan, Stellantis, and General Motors, who are also grappling with the complex challenges of electric vehicle market transition. The industry is simultaneously contending with growing competition from Chinese rivals, waning demand in traditional markets, and the economic complexities of developing affordable electric vehicle technologies.

The European Union has attempted to mitigate some competitive pressures by imposing tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, arguing that these manufacturers benefit from unfair government subsidies. However, the fundamental challenges of technological transition and market adaptation remain significant.

Ford's restructuring reflects a broader industrial recalibration, where traditional automotive manufacturers must rapidly innovate and transform their operational models to remain competitive in an increasingly electrified and technologically sophisticated market landscape.

The job cuts are expected to be implemented by the end of 2027, providing a structured approach to workforce reduction that allows for managed transition and potential retraining opportunities.

Ford to slash 14% of European workforce

Northvolt, the Swedish lithium-ion battery manufacturer, has strategically appointed restructuring expert Paul O'Donnell to oversee its primary production facility in northern Sweden, signalling a critical moment in the company's turbulent financial journey.

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Northvolt, which is currently exploring multiple survival strategies, including the potential filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States.

O'Donnell will assume the role of chairman for Northvolt Ett, the group's primary battery cell production plant. A company spokesperson emphasised the strategic nature of this appointment, stating, "It makes sense to augment the board with an individual who has significant restructuring experience in order to guide the company through the challenging period."

The expert brings substantial credentials to the role, having previously worked with the Blackstone Group and holding non-executive director positions in several companies. His expertise is expected to be crucial in navigating the complex financial landscape the battery manufacturer currently faces.

Founded in 2016, Northvolt has increasingly found itself under significant operational and financial strain. Internal company documents and sources revealed that the company has consistently missed its in-house production targets and has been compelled to curtail production at its manufacturing facility.

The leadership transition extends beyond the board appointment. Mark Duchesne, the previous chief of Northvolt Ett, stepped down last month and was replaced on an interim basis by Angeline Bilodeau, who previously served as the vice president of Northvolt's North American operations.

Swedish media reports have suggested that a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing could potentially provide a structured mechanism for the company to reorganise its financial obligations. The company's two largest shareholders – automotive giant Volkswagen and investment powerhouse Goldman Sachs – are likely closely monitoring these developments.

The challenges facing Northvolt reflect broader difficulties in the electric vehicle battery manufacturing sector. Ambitious production targets, substantial infrastructure investments, and the rapidly evolving technological landscape have created significant financial pressures for emerging battery manufacturers.

The appointment of O'Donnell represents a calculated move to inject strategic financial expertise at a critical juncture. His role will be pivotal in potentially restructuring the company's operations, addressing financial challenges, and exploring pathways to sustainable growth.

Northvolt brings in restructuring specialist as battery maker faces critical financial crossroads

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is encountering substantial obstacles in achieving its electric vehicle (EV) objectives, with the nation's automotive landscape increasingly pivoting towards hybrid technologies rather than pure electric vehicles.

The government's aggressive EV30@30 initiative, aimed at securing 30% of new car sales as electric vehicles by 2030, appears increasingly unlikely to materialise. Recent automotive data reveals a markedly different trajectory, with pure electric vehicle sales growing modestly at approximately 7% in the first eight months of the year, while petrol and diesel hybrids surged by around 20%.

This trend is not unique to India, as hybrid vehicles have gained popularity globally, including in major markets like the United States and China. However, India's policy landscape has inadvertently accelerated this hybrid-centric approach through a combination of strategic missteps and infrastructural limitations.

The government's Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicle (FAME) scheme has been instrumental in subsidising dual-powered vehicles, with its second phase concluding in March. Individual states have further complicated the EV transition, with Uttar Pradesh eliminating registration taxes on strong hybrid cars and Karnataka considering similar measures.

Perhaps most critically, the insufficient development of charging infrastructure represents a significant impediment to pure electric vehicle adoption. Currently, a single charging station in India serves approximately 135 electric vehicles, compared to one station per 20 EVs in more established markets like China and the United States. This infrastructure deficit perpetuates range anxiety among potential buyers, substantially limiting electric vehicle sales.

The market dynamics reflect these challenges starkly. Mild hybrids, which utilise battery technology to marginally improve fuel efficiency while primarily operating on gasoline, have captured 11% of new car sales in the first six months of the year. In contrast, fully electric vehicles account for a mere 2.5% of the market.

Research firm BMI projects that without significant policy interventions, pure battery-powered vehicles may constitute less than 7% of new sales by 2033 – a dramatic shortfall from the government's ambitious 30% target.

Potential remedies exist. A proposed third phase of the FAME scheme could strategically limit subsidies to pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, potentially redirecting market momentum. However, without immediate and decisive action, Modi's government risks experiencing a substantial setback in its electrification agenda.

The implications extend beyond automotive sales. India's electric vehicle strategy is intrinsically linked to broader national objectives of reducing carbon emissions, promoting technological innovation, and establishing domestic manufacturing capabilities in emerging automotive technologies.

As global automotive markets accelerate their transition towards electrification, India finds itself at a critical juncture. The current hybrid-heavy approach may provide short-term market flexibility but risks long-term technological competitiveness and environmental sustainability goals.

India's EV goals stall as hybrid vehicles gain momentum

Xpeng, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is positioning itself for a potential industry milestone, with President Brian Gu confidently projecting the company will reach break-even point towards the end of 2025. This ambitious goal could potentially make Xpeng the first Chinese automaker to achieve profitability primarily through pure electric vehicle sales.

In an interview, Gu described the current market environment as entering a "super cycle," highlighting the company's strategic initiatives to transform its financial trajectory. Unlike competitors BYD and Li Auto, which rely significantly on hybrid vehicle sales for profitability, Xpeng is committed to a pure electric vehicle approach.

The company's optimism stems from multiple strategic developments. Xpeng has forecast fourth-quarter revenue exceeding Wall Street expectations, attributed to the introduction of new models Mona 03 and P7+. The momentum is expected to continue through the fourth quarter and into 2025, bolstered by supportive government policies including subsidies of up to USD 2,800 for trading in older vehicles for electric or more fuel-efficient alternatives.

Expansion plans are equally ambitious. Xpeng intends to launch four new models next year and intensify international market penetration, strategically avoiding North America where Chinese EVs face prohibitive 100% tariffs. While European markets present challenges with potential tariffs exceeding 20%, Gu remains open to exploring innovative market entry strategies.

Technological innovation represents another critical component of Xpeng's growth strategy. The company has invested 3.5 billion yuan (approximately USD 483.07 million) in artificial intelligence development over the past four quarters, focusing on computing power and software advancement. Gu anticipates these investments will constitute a "large chunk" of future research and development expenditure.

Collaborative partnerships are emerging as a key differentiator for Xpeng. Technology services revenue nearly doubled in the third quarter, driven by a partnership with Volkswagen. The company is actively exploring opportunities to expand technological collaboration with the German automaker both within and outside China.

The artificial intelligence landscape is another area of strategic focus. Xpeng positions itself among Chinese developers of advanced assisted driving systems, developing proprietary large AI models comparable to Tesla's Full-Self Driving technology, which is expected to launch in China during the first quarter of 2025.

Gu revealed ongoing discussions with "dozens" of automotive industry players regarding smart driving collaborations, signalling the company's commitment to technological innovation and strategic partnerships.

In a definitive statement that underscores the Swedish government's cautious approach to industrial intervention, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch has categorically ruled out taking a stake in the financially challenged battery manufacturer Northvolt.

Busch reiterated the government's position, which aligns with earlier declarations by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, that there are no immediate plans to invest directly in the struggling battery technology company despite its strategic importance.

"There are huge investments happening in the green transition in Sweden whether or not the Northvolt project gets fully completed or not," Busch emphasised, signalling the government's confidence in the broader renewable energy ecosystem and its capacity to withstand potential setbacks in individual projects.

While maintaining a clear stance against direct financial intervention, Busch simultaneously underscored Northvolt's critical role in the broader geopolitical and industrial landscape. "Northvolt is important for Sweden and it's important for the whole of the European Union, because we are in something of an industrial fight with China and the United States," she stated, revealing the strategic considerations underlying the government's perspective.

The company's significance extends beyond its immediate financial challenges, positioning it as a potential key player in Europe's ambitions to establish a robust, domestically-produced battery manufacturing capability. This comes at a time when global competition in green technology, particularly in electric vehicle and renewable energy storage sectors, is intensifying.

Northvolt, founded in 2016 by former Tesla engineers, has been at the forefront of Sweden's efforts to develop a competitive battery manufacturing sector. The company has attracted significant international attention and investment, positioning itself as a potential European alternative to Asian battery manufacturers.

The government's decision not to intervene financially does not necessarily indicate a lack of support for the company. Instead, it reflects a nuanced approach that allows market mechanisms to operate while maintaining strategic interest in the broader technological transformation.

This stance is particularly noteworthy in the context of the ongoing global technological and industrial competition, where battery technology represents a critical frontier in the transition to sustainable energy and electric transportation.

The European Union has been increasingly vocal about reducing dependence on external battery suppliers, particularly from China, which currently dominates global battery manufacturing. Northvolt represents a pivotal element in this strategic recalibration, embodying Europe's aspirations to develop indigenous battery production capabilities.

By maintaining its position of strategic support without direct financial intervention, the Swedish government appears to be signalling confidence in Northvolt's potential while preserving fiscal prudence. This approach suggests a calculated wait-and-see strategy that allows the company room to navigate its current challenges while keeping the door open for potential future support.

Sweden declines direct investment in Northvolt

In a high-stakes diplomatic encounter on the margins of the Group of 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese President Xi Jinping has strategically enlisted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's assistance to mediate the escalating trade tensions surrounding Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), signalling a potentially critical moment in Sino-European economic relations.

The meeting, reported by Chinese state media outlets CCTV and Xinhua, revealed Xi's explicit hope that Germany would help facilitate a swift resolution to the contentious tariff issue that threatens to dramatically reshape the global automotive market and international trade dynamics.

Xi's diplomatic overture underscores the mounting pressure created by the European Union's recent implementation of punitive tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, which Beijing views as a significant impediment to its automotive industry's international expansion. By directly engaging Scholz, Xi is leveraging Germany's influential position within the European economic ecosystem to potentially negotiate a more favourable outcome.

"It is hoped that Europe and China will resolve the issue of electric vehicles through dialogue and negotiation as soon as possible," Xi was quoted as saying, emphasising a diplomatic approach to resolving the trade dispute. The Chinese leader explicitly stated that Germany would be "willing to make active efforts" in facilitating this resolution.

The timing of this diplomatic intervention is particularly strategic. The G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro provides a neutral, multilateral platform for such high-stakes discussions, allowing both leaders to explore potential compromise without the immediate pressures of bilateral negotiations.

Xi's current South American tour, which commenced with his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Lima—where he inaugurated a Chinese-funded Pacific port—demonstrates China's expanding global economic footprint. Following the G20 summit, Xi is set to undertake a state visit to Brasilia, where he is expected to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and sign several cooperative agreements.

The electric vehicle tariff dispute represents a microcosm of the broader geopolitical and economic tensions between China and the European Union. The EU's tariffs, which can reach up to 38%, were implemented after an investigation concluded that Chinese electric vehicles were receiving unfair government subsidies, creating an uneven competitive landscape.

For Germany, a nation with a robust automotive manufacturing sector, the situation presents a delicate diplomatic balancing act. As home to automotive giants like Volkswagen and BMW, Germany must carefully navigate its economic interests while maintaining diplomatic relations with both China and its European partners.

The potential resolution of this dispute could have far-reaching implications for the global electric vehicle market. Chinese manufacturers like BYD and NIO have been rapidly expanding their international presence, challenging established European and American automotive manufacturers.

Chancellor Scholz's response and potential mediation efforts will be closely watched by international trade observers, automotive industry executives, and diplomatic circles. The outcome could potentially set a precedent for how complex international trade disputes in emerging technological sectors are negotiated and resolved.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said Monday the automaker is ready to adjust to changes in the U.S. automotive landscape anticipated under President-elect Donald Trump's administration. At a western French plant, Tavares spoke of the company’s flexibility, which manifests itself in the fact that it can make electric, hybrid and gasoline versions of its vehicles on the same platform.

And reports suggest that the incoming administration could kill off the USD 7,500 federal tax credit for buying an electric vehicle. This tax credit has been a major enticement for consumers to speed the U.S. EV transition. Last week, two sources briefed on the matter said the Trump team would abandon the credit in the broader effort to overhaul the tax code.

But the loss of the credit could be a stumbling block to EV adoption in the United States, which is already testing at a very slow speed the country's transition away from polluting transportation options.

Such policy shifts could have an impact, Tavares acknowledged, but he said he had confidence that Stellantis can adapt. “Our mission is simple: to give people a clean, safe, and affordable means of connectivity. "We will do this in a way that meets the communities' and countries' expectations with which we operate," he told reporters.

Stellantis is set to unveil its "multi-energy" platform for pickup trucks in the U.S. later this week in an effort to respond to the changing market dynamics. The platform is flexible enough to accept a variety of powertrain combinations, allowing the automaker to develop a range of offerings that will appeal to divergent consumer preferences and regulate requirements.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Monday it has opened two new investigations into the Ford Motor Co. recalls, ratcheting up regulatory scrutiny of the automaker. It follows Ford agreeing to a USD 165 million civil penalty in a settlement with NHTSA just days ago. Ford had previously been ordered by the agency to recall cars with faulty rear view cameras because they were not issued in a timely manner, increasing questions about the company’s recall practices.

The first study looks into whether Ford should broaden a February recall of 77,000 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. Three complaints regarding the seat belt retractor pretensioner suddenly deploying have been received by NHTSA. In these cases, drivers stated they experienced some ripping pain in their necks before a loud noise followed by a rapid tightening, and seat belt being locked, which is potentially very dangerous. Now, the investigation is determining if there are enough Expedition SUVs subject to additional recall for 112,000 vehicles.

The second probe focuses on whether Ford's April recall of 456,000 Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles to address power loss and electrical system problems was adequate. Software updates were issued to address problems involving sudden degradation of the 12 volt battery. NHTSA has received 15 complaints from Bronco Sport owners experiencing power loss, even after the prescribed fix.

Ford said it is working to cooperate with NHTSA to address these investigations. A deal struck last week requires Ford to conduct a thorough review of all recalls filed over the past three years. Additionally, the automaker must also submit new recalls, if necessary, and comply with NHTSA’s standards for increased transparency and reporting.

Ford was accused by NHTSA of supplying incomplete or mistaken data, submitting unconcealed reports, and not making public disclosures of vehicle recalls. While agreeing to the settlement, Ford disputed the findings of the agency.

These investigations and the settlement reflect growing regulatory pressure on Ford to improve its recall processes and ensure vehicle safety for its customers.

Tesla's stock jumped more than 5 percent on Monday after a Bloomberg News report that President-elect Donald Trump's transition team is considering federal regulations for autonomous vehicles. The news follows Trump appointing Tesla CEO Elon Musk to lead his incoming administration's government efficiency team as co head. Trump's team is already in talks with transportation policy leaders to create a unified federal regulatory framework for self-driving vehicles, Bloomberg sources say.

Musk has been critical of the existing approvals process for autonomous vehicles on a state-by-state basis, and sees this as fitting well into the problem of road safety, he says. Tesla’s futuristic two-seat "Cybercab" robotaxi, without a steering wheel or pedals, announced in May and planned for production in 2026, came less than two weeks after Musk’s comments.

Mamta Valechha, an analyst at Quilter Cheviot, said a streamlined federal regulatory framework could accelerate Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) testing and deployment. But Valechha said regulatory hurdles aren't the biggest hurdle for Tesla. For over four years the company has been developing its FSD software – which has not yet been eliminated and is still under the control of driver.

The U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating Tesla's FSD after incidents, including reported collisions involving four vehicles equipped with the company's software. In 2023, one of those crashes was fatal, a factor that has prompted concerns regarding the safety and readiness of the technology for wide spread use.

Tesla’s stock has fattened nearly 28 percent since November 5, catapulting the company over the USD 1 trillion valuation pile. While there are plenty of reasons for debate, investors seem to be taking hope that Musk's proximity to the White House might help facilitate regulatory changes favorable to self driving technology.

By these gains, however, the stock’s rise has driven its price to earnings ratio way past traditional automakers such as Ford and General Motors and even tech giants like Apple and Nvidia. Analysts caution that while federal regulations could provide clarity, Tesla’s FSD technology and safety record remain critical factors for its future success.

The potential regulatory shift represents a significant milestone for the autonomous vehicle industry, signaling increased federal interest in shaping the future of self-driving technology.

TVS unveils upgraded Apache RTR 160 4V with advanced features

The Telangana government has launched a sweeping initiative to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption by announcing a complete exemption from road tax and registration fees for all EVs purchased and registered within the state through December 31, 2026. This significant policy shift, effective immediately, removes the previous 5,000-vehicle cap on tax benefits, marking a major step toward sustainable transportation in the region.

The announcement came during a Sunday press conference at the Secretariat, where Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, accompanied by Special Chief Secretary (Transport) Vikas Raj and Transport Commissioner Surendra Mohan, revealed that the government order had been issued the previous day. The policy expansion builds upon the state's growing success in EV adoption, with current registrations reaching 1.70 lakh vehicles, representing 5% of all vehicles registered in Telangana.

"This is a crucial step toward our vision of a cleaner, more sustainable Telangana," said Minister Prabhakar, highlighting the policy's role in complementing the existing Telangana Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2020-2030. The comprehensive initiative includes various incentives, from tax exemptions to retro-fitment benefits, designed to make EV ownership more attractive to residents.

The government's environmental strategy extends beyond private vehicle ownership. Prabhakar announced plans to replace 3,000 RTC buses with electric alternatives within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, demonstrating a commitment to greening public transportation infrastructure.

Environmental monitoring data supports the timing of this initiative, with Hyderabad currently maintaining a moderate Air Quality Index (AQI) of 83, while nearby Patancheru and Sangareddy record levels of 82 and 79 respectively. These relatively favorable conditions present an opportunity to prevent the development of severe air quality issues similar to those experienced in cities like New Delhi.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka have endorsed the initiative as part of their broader vision for urban environmental improvement. The administration is also developing complementary policies, including:
- A new framework for scrapping vehicles older than 15 years
- Implementation of automatic vehicle testing centers
- Enhanced road safety measures

The policy announcement comes amid concerning traffic safety statistics, with approximately 1.50 lakh annual road accident fatalities nationwide and 20 daily casualties in Telangana alone. In response, the government has partnered with an NGO to implement pre-license awareness programs, integrating road safety education into the broader transportation policy framework.

Minister Prabhakar emphasized the generational impact of the initiative, urging citizens to consider EVs not just for immediate financial benefits but as an investment in environmental preservation for future generations. "The choices we make today in transportation will shape the air our children breathe tomorrow," he stated.

The removal of the registration cap signifies the government's confidence in the state's ability to support widespread EV adoption. Previous limitations had restricted tax benefits to 5,000 vehicles, but the new policy acknowledges the growing demand for electric vehicles and the state's commitment to supporting this transition without limitations.

Telangana eliminates road tax on EVs through 2026 in major green push

Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt AB has been exploring the possibility of filing for bankruptcy protection in the United States, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The Stockholm-based company, which has attracted approximately EUR 10 billion (USD 10.57 billion) in funding since its founding in 2016, has transformed from being Europe's most promising domestic EV battery manufacturer to a company grappling with severe financial challenges. The consideration of Chapter 11 proceedings comes as part of a broader strategic review initiated in July 2023, as the company faces mounting pressures from production setbacks and the loss of a key customer.

Sources close to the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, revealed that while bankruptcy protection is being considered, it represents just one of several options being evaluated by the company's management. The news comes as Swedish business publication Dagens Industri reported that negotiations between Northvolt and its stakeholders regarding short-term financing had initially stalled, though recent developments suggest these talks have resumed despite growing complications in recent weeks.

Northvolt's current predicament marks a dramatic shift in fortunes for a company once heralded as Europe's answer to Asian dominance in the EV battery market. The manufacturer has been forced to implement significant cost-cutting measures and operational streamlining in response to its financial difficulties. These challenges have emerged despite the company's impressive funding history, which has included investments from major automotive manufacturers and financial institutions.

When approached for comment, a Northvolt spokesperson declined to specifically address the Chapter 11 considerations but acknowledged the ongoing strategic review process. "Since the beginning of the strategic review, we have constantly been discussing different options and that hasn't changed throughout the process," the spokesperson stated. "We communicate results once we have found a conclusion, while we continue the dialogue with our stakeholders."

The potential consideration of Chapter 11 proceedings under U.S. bankruptcy law is particularly notable given Northvolt's status as a European company. Such a move would allow the company to reorganise its operations while maintaining control of its business operations, potentially providing a path forward while protecting it from creditors.

Industry analysts suggest that Northvolt's struggles highlight the broader challenges facing European efforts to establish a competitive domestic battery manufacturing industry. The company's situation reflects the significant capital requirements, technical challenges, and competitive pressures in the global EV battery market, where established Asian manufacturers maintain a significant advantage.

The outcome of Northvolt's strategic review and potential restructuring efforts could have significant implications for Europe's ambitious plans to develop a self-sufficient EV battery supply chain, a key component of the continent's broader transition to electric mobility and its climate goals.

Northvolt weighs US bankruptcy protection amid financial struggles

A coalition of leading EV manufacturers and battery producers has mounted a strong defence of existing tax incentives, warning President-elect Donald Trump that eliminating these credits could undermine American competitiveness and job growth in crucial swing states.

The Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA), representing industry giants including Rivian, LG, Tesla, Uber, Lucid, and Panasonic, has emphasised the substantial economic benefits these incentives have brought to states that proved pivotal in recent elections. The association points to significant job creation in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and Georgia as direct results of the current tax credit system.

ZETA Executive Director Albert Gore emphasised the strategic importance of these incentives, stating they are essential for America to "actually compete to win against China." This stance comes at a critical time as sources close to the Trump transition team have revealed plans to eliminate the USD 7,500 consumer tax credit for electric vehicle purchases, a report that has already triggered declines in EV and battery manufacturer stocks.

The industry's response reflects growing concern about the future of electric vehicle incentives, with manufacturers caught between stringent environmental regulations and the potential loss of crucial financial support. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, in an October 15 letter to Congress, stressed that maintaining these tax credits is "critical to cementing the U.S. as a global leader" in future automotive manufacturing.

However, the industry appears divided on this issue. Tesla, the largest EV manufacturer, has reportedly expressed support for ending the subsidy in discussions with the Trump transition committee, marking a notable departure from the broader industry position.

Trump's stance on EV incentives aligns with his broader scepticism of environmental regulations. He has already announced plans to reverse the Biden administration's emissions regulations, which mandate a 50% reduction in tailpipe emissions from 2026 levels by 2032. In August, Trump explicitly questioned the value of EV incentives, stating, "Tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing."

The president-elect's potential options for dismantling the incentive program include modifying Treasury Department rules that currently facilitate automaker access to the USD 7,500 credit or pursuing a complete congressional repeal. This wouldn't be Trump's first attempt to eliminate these incentives; during his previous term, he sought to repeal the EV tax credit, which was subsequently expanded under President Biden's administration in 2022.

The current debate highlights the broader tension between environmental policy goals and economic considerations in the automotive sector. While supporters argue that tax credits are crucial for maintaining American competitiveness in the global EV market and supporting domestic manufacturing jobs, critics, including Trump, question their economic efficiency and necessity.

EV industry leaders warn Trump against dismantling vehicle tax credit program

In a historic shift that signals both corporate evolution and strategic preparation for potential political challenges, Hyundai Motor has appointed Jose Munoz, its U.S. chief and global chief operating officer, as co-CEO. This landmark decision marks the first time a major South Korean conglomerate has elevated a foreign national to such a senior leadership position.

The appointment comes as Hyundai, the world's third-largest automaker together with affiliate Kia, positions itself to navigate potential challenges that could arise from a second Trump administration. The strategic leadership restructuring includes not only Munoz's elevation but also the appointment of former U.S. diplomat Sung Kim to oversee global external affairs.

Munoz, a Spanish native and U.S. citizen holding a PhD in nuclear engineering, will join Hyundai's existing leadership structure while maintaining a position below executive chair Euisun Chung, the founder's grandson, and newly appointed group vice chair Chang Jae-hoon. The leadership team also includes co-CEO Lee Dong-seok, bringing the total number of co-CEOs to three.

The timing of these appointments appears particularly strategic given Trump's stated policy intentions that could significantly impact Hyundai's operations. Trump has proposed potentially damaging policies, including increased import tariffs and the elimination of EV subsidies. These policies could particularly affect Hyundai and Kia, which currently rank second in U.S. electric vehicle sales behind Tesla, with approximately 60% of their U.S. sales coming from imports, according to Hanwha Investment & Securities analyst Kim Sung-rae.

Adding to the concerns is Trump's suggestion of imposing 200% tariffs on Mexican car imports, which could directly affect Kia's Mexican production facilities. These potential challenges come at a crucial time for Hyundai, which recently began EV production at its Georgia facility and has announced plans for two North American battery factories in partnership with LG Energy Solution and SK On.

Munoz's appointment builds on his impressive track record with Hyundai since joining in 2019. His tenure has been marked by record sales, market share growth, and strong financial performance for both Hyundai and Genesis brands in North America. Prior to joining Hyundai, Munoz spent 15 years at Nissan Motor, where he was once considered a potential CEO candidate following Carlos Ghosn's departure.

Park Ju-gun, head of corporate analysis firm Leaders Index, notes that while the promotion partly prepares for a potential Trump presidency, it also recognizes Munoz's achievements: "The promotion is not only a preparation for Trump presidency but also recognition of Munoz's role in Hyundai's solid U.S. performance despite its EVs being not eligible for U.S. consumer tax credits."

The appointment reflects a broader transformation under Chung's leadership, who has actively recruited foreign executives to diversify the traditionally South Korean-dominated management ranks. Additionally, Hyundai has strengthened its Global Policy Office by hiring several former South Korean diplomats, anticipating potential policy shifts in the U.S. administration.

The market response to these changes has been mixed, with Hyundai's shares rising 2.2% while Kia's shares declined 1% following the announcement. The company has yet to announce who will assume Munoz's current roles as U.S. chief and global chief operating officer when his new position becomes effective in January.

Hyundai names first foreign co-CEO amid Trump policy concerns

The European battery manufacturing pioneer Northvolt, billed as a key player in avoiding Chinese EV batteries, is struggling to produce its batteries and is financial challenged. But the Swedish company, famed for its cutting edge green technology, has reportedly fallen behind in in house production targets at its northern Sweden facility, raising questions as to its capacity to scale operations.

Sensitive internal documents as recently as November 10 reviewed by Reuters show that Northvolt has consistently failed to meet its weekly production targets for shippable battery cells — that meet client delivery quality standards. At the time, one document had an ambitious target - 51,000 deliverable cells in a single week by the end of 2024, which is looking more and more like an impossible target now.

The targets put forward by the coalition in September were outdated, conceded Northvolt, led by former Tesla executive Peter Carlsson, but could not reveal its current production benchmarks, saying they were on track with contracted customer demands.

These circumstances have further stretched the company’s operational challenges by making it financially distressed. In September, Northvolt announced it was cutting operations on a smaller scale to cut costs, slashing its workforce by 20% amid plans to stabilise finances. Nevertheless, the company has not made a profit and last week lost a 2 billion euros (USD 2.1bn) contract with BMW, among other setbacks, underscoring its troubles.

Northvolt is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, sources close to the company say, but have not said anything official.

Late October production data highlight the severity of the problem. Northvolt delivered just 22,000 shippable cells for the week starting October 21, against a target of 30,000. While numbers for the week ending November 10 were a bit higher – topping 20,000 – they are still short of goals.

As Northvolt grapples with missed targets, delayed deliveries, and financial instability, its struggles highlight the complexities of ramping up advanced battery production in a competitive global market. These challenges cast doubt on Europe’s hopes for a robust homegrown EV battery industry capable of competing with dominant Chinese manufacturers.

BYD, global leader in new energy vehicles (NEVs) and power batteries, had a historical event with its roll-off of the 10 millionth NEV at the Xiaomo Production Base in Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone. The achievement has come at a time when BYD is marking its 30th anniversary, and the company remains committed to sustainable mobility and innovation. BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu spoke during the event about BYD's incredible path from a small startup with 20 employees to becoming a multinational company with nearly a million employees around the world. Mr. ‘The soul of BYD’s engineers is the soul of our company,’ Wang said, noting that the soul of BYD’s engineers is also the soul of BYD. And it became the first automaker in the world to hit the 10 million NEV mark. Notably, BYD took 15 years to produce the first 5 million units, and then manufactured the next 5 million in 15 months, illustrating the company's rapid growth trajectory and technological leadership. With its commitment to sustainable practices, India's leading cement and ready mix concrete company, UltraTech Cement Limited, is expected to greatly increase its use of electric vehicles (EV trucks) in its logistics operations. The company has also inked a new transport service contract which entails deployment of 100 EV trucks to transport 75,000 metric tonnes of clinker per month. The trucks will run a round trip of around 400 kilometers between UltraTech’s Dhar (Indore) Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh and Dhule (Nashik) Cement Works in Maharashtra.

This represents a significant achievement for UltraTech, becoming the first Indian cement company to introduce EV trucks at such a scale, and for such a long lead distance. According to UltraTech, its transport related CO2 emissions are projected to fall by 17,000 metric tonnes annually with the transition from conventional fossil-fuel trucks to EVs.

The pilot program, which started in January 2024, was successful as UltraTech deployed five electric trucks to the same route. Included among these were training of truck drivers and the establishment of charging infrastructure. These successful piloting efforts have therefore encouraged UltraTech to investigate further routes for EV truck deployment and also to pursue another pilot programme for carrying clinker between two of its other manufacturing units.

Speaking on the initiative, **K C Jhanwar**, Managing Director, UltraTech Cement said, “UltraTech is fully committed to Net Zero by 2050. All aspects of our operation are geared towards sustainability. 'Scaling up the use of EV trucks in our logistics is key to becoming a more sustainable part of the industry.'

As part of the **eFAST initiative** by the Indian government, UltraTech plans to deploy 500 EV trucks by June 2025. Since introducing CNG vehicles in 2021 and LNG vehicles in 2022, the company has been at the forefront of green logistics. Currently, UltraTech operates over 468 CNG trucks and 67 LNG trucks across various manufacturing units.

This latest step reinforces UltraTech’s leadership in sustainable logistics and its commitment to reducing its environmental footprint while driving innovation in the cement industry.

The Trump transition team is evaluating several candidates to become U.S. Secretary of Transportation, including former Uber exec Emil Michael and three current or former Republican lawmakers, according to eight sources familiar with this process. Michael is reportedly a leading contender backed by tech executives, including those who dug Trump. Michael is known for his ties to Elon Musk, who hired him to jumpstart his bid to integrate Tesla, though he also socially and professionally has ties to the SpaceX CEO, known for his rocket company, SpaceX, and has invested in it. But Reuters could not verify whether Musk has been pushing for Michael's appointment. Michael declined to comment.

They include Sam Graves, U.S. representative from Missouri who chairs the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, outgoing Louisiana representative Garret Graves, who has advised Trump on transportation policy, and former Wisconsin representative Sean Duffy, now a Fox News host.

Sam Graves said he was more than happy to take on the role, which he would be 'honoured' to fill. A request for comment from Sean Duffy and Garret Graves was not returned.

An annual budget of around USD 110 billion, the Department of Transportation is responsible for highways, pipelines, railroads, cars, trucks and air traffic control through the Federal Aviation Administration. But it also sets fuel economy standards and manages the federal infrastructure funding.

A billionaire who has contributed USD 119 million to pro-Trump efforts — Elon Musk — is thought to have a heavy say in cabinet appointments. It could be good news for Tesla, as Musk has expressed interest in reshaping autonomous-vehicle regulations. The DOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is already investigating the Las Vegas crash as well as a string of accidents related to Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” system.

Michael’s career includes a tenure at Uber, where he oversaw mergers and fundraising but left in 2017 following a workplace culture investigation. He also served as a White House Fellow during the Obama administration, working in the Department of Defense on projects in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan.

The Trump team has yet to finalise its decision, with a spokesperson indicating an announcement will come once the selection is complete.

The country's premier product certification agency has initiated an investigation into Ola Electric, India's leading electric scooter manufacturer, following widespread consumer complaints about service standards and product issues.

The investigation, announced Thursday by Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare comes after the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) received an unusually high volume of 10,000 consumer complaints about the SoftBank-backed company. This unprecedented step by regulators signals growing scrutiny of the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market in India.

The Bureau of Indian Standards' investigation follows Ola Electric's initial response to a notice from the CCPA, in which the company claimed to have resolved 99.1% of the reported complaints. However, regulators deemed this response insufficient to address the underlying concerns about product quality and service standards.

Bhavish Aggarwal, Ola's founder, attempted to downplay the severity of the issues during a recent earnings call, characterizing two-thirds of the complaints as "minor issues" such as loose parts or customers' unfamiliarity with the vehicle's software systems. Despite these assurances, the regulatory intervention suggests authorities are taking a more serious view of the situation.

The timing of this regulatory scrutiny is particularly significant for Ola Electric, coming just months after its much-anticipated market debut in August. The investigation has already begun to impact investor confidence, with the company's shares declining approximately 7.6% from their initial listing price of 76 rupees. The stock continued to show weakness on Thursday, dropping about 1% while the broader auto sector index (.NIFTYAUTO) posted gains of 0.5%.

This regulatory intervention represents a critical juncture for India's electric vehicle industry, which has seen rapid growth and significant investment in recent years. As the market leader, Ola Electric's handling of these issues could set important precedents for quality control and customer service standards across the sector.

The investigation also highlights the increasing assertiveness of India's consumer protection authorities in regulating the tech-enabled automotive sector. The CCPA's decision to escalate the matter to the Bureau of Indian Standards suggests a more stringent approach to ensuring product quality and consumer satisfaction in the emerging electric vehicle market.

For Ola Electric, which has positioned itself as a pioneer in India's electric mobility revolution, the investigation presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The company's response to these regulatory concerns could either reinforce or diminish consumer confidence in both the brand and the broader electric vehicle sector.

The development comes at a crucial time for India's electric vehicle industry, which is seeing increasing adoption amid government pushes for sustainable transportation solutions. How Ola Electric navigates this regulatory scrutiny could have broader implications for the sector's growth trajectory and regulatory framework.

China's Geely Group in a shake up has put the premium electric vehicle (EV) brand Zeekr in charge of another sibling brand Lynk & Co. There is also the first major step in Geely's ongoing downsising and cost cutting efforts to break with its past as an acquisitive automotive land-grabbing machine.

In restructuring, Geely Holding has separated internal functional departments and company groups into 12 automotive brands, including Volvo Cars, to increase efficiency and decrease cost. Group Chairman Eric Li also said the group needs “deep integration” inside its portfolio to improve performance while avoiding duplication. He also encouraged brands to properly position to the market in order to avoid internal competition.

Zeekr and Lynk will join hands under the new plan, creating a new entity dedicated to developing new energy vehicles (NEVs), targeting one million units in annual vehicle sales, up from 339,000 units in 2023. The integration will be overseen by Zeekr CEO Andy An as Geely aims to cut down on redundancies in research and development (R&D), sales and marketing.

Zeekr will purchase a 30pc stake from Volvo Cars, a 20pc stake from Geely Holding. With this, the stake of Zeekr in Lynk & Co. will increase to 51 percent by Geely Auto, remaining the rest shares. Lynk & Co is valued at around 18 billion yuan (USD 2.5 billion) in the transaction, which will close mid 2025.

Zeekr and Lynk will enter into a deeper cooperation centered on further technology and platform sharing. Both have similar architecture for their electric models already, and pooling R&D resources could cut costs to 10-20% compared to them separately, An said. Zeekr will also take advantage of Lynk’s presense in lower tier cities.

Zeekr, which launched in 2021, has seen rapid growth, selling nearly 143,000 cars in the first three quarters of 2024, a jump of 81% year-on-year. In contrast, Lynk & Co. sold about 195,600 vehicles over the same period, marking a 40% increase from 2023.

The announcement sent Volvo’s shares up 3.5%, reflecting positive market sentiment. The deal is part of Geely’s broader push to reshape its future in the fast-evolving global EV market.
