Alarms are ringing in India over yet another deadly virus. The southern state of Kerala has reported four cases of the Nipah virus out of which two succumb to the infection. Now Nipah is a zoonotic virus which means it is transmitted to people from animals. It mainly affects animals such as bats, pigs, dogs and horses. Though the infection does not spread as quickly as COVID-19 the case fatality rate or the proportion of deaths among those who test positive is very high as per the World Health Organization.

A modelling research has suggested that poisoning caused by lead has a far greater impact on global health than previously thought. The study noted that the metal is potentially contributing to over five million deaths a year and posing a similar threat to air pollution.

The study titled - 'Global health burden and cost of lead exposure in children and adults: a health impact and economic modelling analysis' - was published on Tuesday (September 12) in The Lancet Planetary Health.

The study highlights how lead exposure is causing global health risks despite substantial declines in blood lead levels following the leaded gasoline phase-out.

"For the first time, to our knowledge, we aimed to estimate the global burden and cost of intelligence quotient (IQ) loss and cardiovascular disease mortality from lead exposure," the study read.

Researchers of the study said that they used country blood lead level estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019.

They estimated IQ loss in the global population of children younger than five years using the blood lead level–IQ loss function from an international pooled analysis.

It further mentioned that the researchers estimated the cost of IQ loss, which was calculated only for the proportion of children expected to enter the labour force, as the present value of loss in lifetime income from the IQ loss.

The study added that the researchers estimated cardiovascular deaths (with 95% CIs) due to lead exposure among people aged 25 years or older using a health impact model.

The model captures the "effect of lead exposure on cardiovascular disease mortality that is mediated through mechanisms other than hypertension".

All estimates were calculated by World Bank income classification and region (for low-income and middle-income countries [LMICs] only) for 2019.

The study found that children younger than five years lost 765 million (95% CI 443–1098) IQ points and that 5,545,000 (2,305,000–8,271,000) adults died from cardiovascular disease in 2019 due to lead exposure.

Around 729 million of the IQ points lost, which was 95·3% of the total global IQ loss, and 5,004,000 (90·2% of total) cardiovascular disease deaths due to lead exposure occurred in LMICs.

According to the study, the IQ loss in LMICs was nearly 80% higher than a previous estimate and the cardiovascular disease deaths were six times higher than the GBD 2019 estimate.

Mexican lawmakers heard testimony of a journalist and researcher who displayed what he asserted were over 1000 years old two bodies of "non-humans" during a congressional hearing, but experts have raised scepticism over the claims.

The alleged mummified remains were displayed in two small cases on Tuesday (September 12), marking the first time the Mexican Congress has addressed the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

The supposed corpses had greyish skin and human-like facial features, with three fingers in hand. They were brought by Jaime Maussan, a Mexican journalist and researcher who claims to have discovered them in Peru in 2017.

Experts sceptic over purported 'alien' bodies: 'Many elements made no sense'

The British government announced on Tuesday (September 12) that the officials will use X-rays and MRI scans to determine the age of asylum seekers who are apparently falsely claiming to be unaccompanied children.

The move will facilitate the government's plans to restrict what it calls "illegal" migration to the UK, which has emerged as a highly contentious political issue.

The interior ministry said that the legislation unveiled this week by the justice ministry will "authorise the use of X-rays in scientific age assessments". It still needs parliament's approval.

It noted that between 2016 and June 2023, there were over 11,275 asylum cases where age was disputed and almost half of the individuals (5,551) were found to be adults.

Taiwan 'not for sale': Taipei slams Elon Musk over ‘blindly flattering’ comments for China

Ukrainian officials claimed on Wednesday (September 13) that a "massive" Russian drone attack earlier damaged infrastructure at Ukrainian grain-exporting ports on the Danube River.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said the ports of Reni and Izmail had been struck in an attack that damaged warehouses used for grain cargoes, oil storage tanks and administrative buildings. The official said that the attack lasted for more than four hours.

Kyiv alleges that Moscow has increased such attacks on Ukrainian ports and grain facilities since Russia quit a deal that had enabled Ukraine to safely export grain via the Black Sea.

China has come up with a new path to move forward its bid of "peaceful unification" with Taiwan. Beijing has unveiled a plan to turn Fujian province into a model zone for "integration" with the island nation.

Beijing views self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and even claims that, in case needed, it will use force to unite the two territories. For the same, China boosted its military presence near democratically governed Taiwan in recent years.

China's relations with the island soured since Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen came to power in 2016 and deteriorated further when coronavirus curbs impacted trade and other exchanges.

On Tuesday (September 12), the Chinese policymakers released detailed measures in a 21-article document to turn the southeastern mainland province into a demonstration area for integrated development across the Taiwan Strait.

According to the plan, which has been jointly issued by the Communist Party's Central Committee and the State Council, China's cabinet, the move aims to "deepen cross-strait integrated development in all fields and promote the process of peaceful reunification".

China outlines raft of measures for strengthening integration with Taiwan

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has picked a woman as foreign minister and appointed as defence minister a politician who has worked to build ties with Taiwan, in Wednesday's new cabinet line-up.

The choices, among 11 new faces and five women, spotlight a focus on gender equality and a stronger line on defence as Kishida battles sagging ratings, with his term as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) set to end next year.

Both ministers face the task of navigating ties with China that soured after Japan began releasing into the Pacific Ocean treated radioactive water from its wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant, angering its neighbour.

Kishida said the new defence minister will be Minoru Kihara, a pro-Taiwan politician who has visited the democratically-governed island in the past and belongs to a Japan-Taiwan interparliamentary group.

"I do think this sends a message that Japan is seeking stability in Taiwan alongside the United States," said security expert Takashi Kawakami at Takushoku University in the capital.

The choice of Kihara as defence minister is not an anti-China move, but indicates a closeness with Taiwan, he added.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and will be sensitive to any shift in Japan's stance on the island.

Kihara will also oversee efforts to bolster Japan's military in a plan to double defence spending over the five years to 2027, and grapple with funding the buildup as tension rises in East Asia over China's military expansion and maritime disputes.

The new foreign minister is Yoko Kamikawa, a former justice minister who oversaw the execution of key members of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult responsible for the deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995.

The choice of Kamikawa, who has a master's degree from Harvard University, shows the government wants to ensure smooth ties with the United States, said Yu Uchiyama, a professor of politics at Tokyo University.

"She has plenty of experience, and I do think she will make significant contributions to strengthening ties with the United States," he said.

One political commentator said ministerial roles had diminished in importance, however, as summits increasingly become a forum for dialogue with China.

"Around the world, summit diplomacy has become mainstream," said Shigenobu Tamura, who previously worked for the LDP.

"Even if the foreign and defence minister posts change, there won't be any change or impact on Japan's diplomatic policy."

The cabinet reshuffle comes amid a dip in popularity for Kishida, following a string of scandals from data mishaps linked to government identity cards and the arrest of a vice minister on suspicion of graft.

About 43% of respondents disapproved of Kishida's leadership while 36% approved, a poll by public broadcaster NHK showed last week.

Kishida, who assumed office two years ago, retained both his finance and trade ministers, signalling there would be no major shift in economic policies.

The new cabinet's priorities include pulling together a fresh package of economic stimulus to cushion the squeeze on households from rising fuel bills, tackling the fallout from persistent inflation.

After reports emerged Tuesday afternoon (September 12) that the government is planning a 10 per cent GST hike on the sale of diesel vehicles, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari issued a clarification denying any concrete plans right now.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Gadkari wrote, "It is essential to clarify that there is no such proposal currently under active consideration by the government."

"In line with our commitments to achieve Carbon Net Zero by 2070 and to reduce air pollution levels caused by hazardous fuels like diesel, as well as the rapid growth in automobile sales, it is imperative to actively embrace cleaner and greener alternative fuels. These fuels should be import substitutes, cost-effective, indigenous, and pollution-free."

Earlier in the day, while speaking at the 63rd Annual SIAM convention, Gadkari flagged an urgent need to move away from fuels like petrol and diesel.

“I am going to hand over a letter to the Finance Minister this evening stating that an additional 10 per cent GST be put on diesel-powered vehicles. We will increase tax on diesel to the extent it will be difficult to sell it," Gadkari said.

"Hope automobile industry will take suo moto initiative to cut down diesel usage," he added.

He further said that he is planning to meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman later in the day to request the GST hike.

At the convention, he reached out to the automobile industry and asked them to cut down on diesel usage, otherwise, the government would have to impose a 10 per cent "pollution tax" which would make it difficult for the industries to sell diesel vehicles.
