In northern France, researchers are analysing mysterious markings on a Bronze Age rock as they hope to find some hidden ancient sites. The rock is now being hailed as a "treasure map" and has been unstudied for 4,000 years.

Bronze Age rock is known as the Saint-Bélec slab. In 1990, when local archaeologists were digging at a prehistoric site in Finistère, France, the slab was discovered. However, it disappeared for over a century, to be later found in 2014.

Researchers in 2021 called it the oldest map of Europe as they probed its origin and the etchings. The finding will help them understand the date of the slab, which will be the catalyst to rediscover lost monuments.

As quoted by news agency AFP, Yvan Pailler, a professor at the University of Western Brittany (UBO), said: "Using the map to try to find archaeological sites is a great approach. We never work like that."

Sophisticated radar equipment and aerial photography are used to locate ancient sites, but sometimes they are uncovered by accident in cities when the foundations for new buildings are being dug.

Pailler's colleague, Clement Nicolas from the CNRS research institute, said the team has just begun its journey and they would need to survey the entire territory and cross-reference the markings on the slab.

'Treasure map'

The ancient map marks an area roughly 30 by 21 kilometres. Pailler said that it's a "treasure map" and the job could take 15 years.

Notably, Nicolas and Pailler, both were part of the team that rediscovered the slab in 2014. They were also joined by colleagues from other institutions in France and overseas so that they could decode its mysteries.

Pailler said that "there were a few engraved symbols that made sense right away", but in 1900 a local historian did not understand its significance when it was first uncovered.

In the coarse bumps and lines of the slab, they could see the rivers and mountains of Roudouallec, part of the Brittany region about 500 kilometres west of Paris. The researchers scanned the slab and compared it with current maps, finding a roughly 80 per cent match.

The rock has tiny hollows, which researchers believe could point to burial mounds, dwellings or geological deposits.

It is believed that discovering their meaning could lead to a whole flood of new finds.

Highlights of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)

CTBT was introduced in 1996 to ban "any nuclear weapon test explosion or any other nuclear explosion" anywhere in the world.

The treaty aims at reducing nuclear weapons across the world, eventually eliminating them.

A total of 187 states have signed the treaty, and 178 have ratified it by passing corresponding laws in their parliaments.

Britain, France and Russia are the three countries that possess nuclear weapons and have signed and ratified CTBT.

Meanwhile, the United States, Israel and China have signed but not ratified.

Now, Russia is planning to withdraw Moscow's ratification of the treaty.

Amid soaring tensions in West Asia, the United States has put about 2,000 troops on prepare-to-deploy orders for possible support to Israel, the Associated Press reported on Monday citing a defence official.

The readiness appeared to be in anticipation of an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza, which is aimed at rescuing hostages taken during the Oct 7 attack by Hamas and crushing the militant group that rules the enclave.

But the US-based media outlets cited the official as further saying that the troops are not being sent anywhere yet, nor would they necessarily go to Israel or Gaza.

The report added the US soldiers would not be sent to Israel but could be assigned to other countries so that they help with medical assistance and other humanitarian services.

North Korea accused the United States of inciting regional tensions with its nuclear programme with "nuclear supremacy" and claimed that Pyongyang's nuclear capabilities are part of a self-defensive move to avert a nuclear war.

KCNA said on Tuesday (Oct 17) that Kim Kwang Myong, described by the state media as a researcher at the Foreign Ministry's Institute for Disarmament and Peace, blamed the US for strategic instability destroying world peace.

His reported comments come as North Korea raised alarm in the region with regular launches of missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) that can strike the continental United States.

Kim also said that the US wants to improve its preemptive nuclear strike capability against North Korea by building a missile defence system. He said that Washington is sending strategic assets to the region and "ultra-modern military hardware" to its allies.

He added, "The reality urgently requires the DPRK, which is standing in confrontation with the US imperialism, the most aggressive nuclear war criminal force, to bolster up its self-defensive military capabilities for deterring a nuclear war."

North Korea accuses US of inciting tension with 'nuclear supremacy'

The Canadian defence minister has said that a Chinese fighter jet flew within five metres of a Canadian military plane over international waters near the coast of China, calling it "unacceptable", "dangerous" and "reckless".

The minister said that the Canadian surveillance plane was taking part in a United Nations operation to enforce sanctions against North Korea.

Canada's Global News reported that the incident took place on Monday in international waters off the coast of China. However, China has not released any official statement over the allegations.

While speaking to the reporter, Minister Bill Blair said, "The Canadian plane was taking part in surveillance to enforce United Nations sanctions on North Korea when the incident happened on Monday."

Blair added, "I am very concerned about the unprofessional way in which this was done. It was quite frankly dangerous and reckless."

"And those types of behaviours are not ever acceptable and we will express that to the People's Republic of China in the most appropriate way," he further said, adding that the Chinese air force regularly interacted with planes on UN missions.

In June 2022, Canada's military accused Chinese warplanes of harassing its patrol aircraft as they monitored North Korean sanction evasions, sometimes forcing Canadian planes to divert from their flight paths.

In May, the Pentagon said a Chinese fighter jet carried out an "unnecessarily aggressive" manoeuvre near a US military plane over the South China Sea in international airspace.

The encounter followed what Washington calls a recent trend of increasingly dangerous behaviour by Chinese military aircraft.

Blair added, "I am very concerned about the unprofessional way in which this was done. It was quite frankly dangerous and reckless." "And those types of behaviours are not ever acceptable and we will express that to the People's Republic of China in the most appropriate way," he further said, adding that the Chinese air force regularly interacted with planes on UN missions.
