Scientists may have found the reason behind grey whales washing up dead on the Pacific coast since 2019. Scientists have been left stunned by the report of the mysterious deaths of grey whales. In a new study published in the journal Science, scientists have established links between the impact of climate change on these marine mammals.

Over the past four years, more than 680 grey whales have washed up or been found dead on North America's Pacific shores over the last four years.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which releases data on whale deaths, characterised the recent increase in grey whale strandings as an "unusual mortality event".

The mammal population in the North Pacific has declined from a peak of around 27,000 in 2016 to about 14,500 in 2023.

While revealing what is behind the deaths, Joshua Stuart from Oregon State University's Marine Mammal Institute said in a statement: "These are extreme population swings that we did not expect to see in a large, long-lived species like grey whales."

"When the availability of their prey in the Arctic is low, and the whales cannot reach their feeding areas because of sea ice, the grey whale population experiences rapid and major shocks," added Stuart, who is also the author of the new study.

The latest research suggests that even species like grey whales, which are highly mobile and long-lived, can be sensitive to climate change impacts, such as the melting of the Arctic.

Explaining what was causing these deaths, Stewart told outlet KTVB, "Feels like this time we've got a pretty good 'smoking gun'".

Grey whales spend the summers in the Arctic and migrate more than 12,000 miles every year from their feeding areas to their breeding grounds in the warm, shallow lagoons of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. They spend winters there.

Grey whales in the Arctic eat amphipod crustaceans. Amphipods, in turn, feed on algae that grow on the sea ice's underside.

Stewart said in a release that "with less ice, you get less algae, which is worse for the grey whale prey" and "when there are sudden declines in the quality of prey, the population of grey whales is significantly affected".

The finding of the report means that the melting sea ice disrupts the entire food chain, but Stewart said he does not think there is currently a risk of extinction for grey whales.

There's no confirmation, but astrophysicist Clare Kenyon told the Herald Sun: "The culprit? Most likely space junk or a meteor."

She added, "When a piece of space junk – or even something natural like a chunk of space rock – is pulled towards Earth, it's moving really quickly and then basically slams into the atmosphere, creating a kind of sonic boom."

"The friction from Earth's atmosphere is immense and causes the material to break apart and burn causing lingering bright streaks of light across the sky," she added.

Dr Brad Tucker, who is an astronomer from the Australian National University, also hinted at a meteorite. He said that the "flash associated with this boom" hints at it likely coming from a meteor.

"It would have been a bit of an astroid broke off, travelled through space, [and] hit the Earth's atmosphere," Tucker said.

What was that? Loud bang and bizarre flash of light stun locals in Melbourne

American multinational pharmaceutical Pfizer will price its coronavirus (COVID-19) drug Paxlovid at $1,390 per course. The price of the five-day course of the COVID-19 antiviral drug will be set when the company starts to make it available to the commercial market later this year.

The Wall Street Journal first reported about the price of Paxlovid, later a company spokesperson on Wednesday confirmed it.

The price is before rebates and discounts to insurers and also the pharmacy benefit managers. The list price is more than double the $529 the federal government paid for Paxlovid.

Since December 2021, when the FDA initially authorised the medication, the government has acquired and supplied Paxlovid to the people for free.

However, the company will sell Paxlovid directly to health insurers starting in 2024. But then, the demand for Covid vaccines and treatments has fallen significantly.

Doctors, health professionals, and patient activists are concerned that increasing the price may limit access to the treatment.

A spokesperson for the company said in a statement to CNBC, "As always, Pfizer's goal is to ensure broad and equitable access to our medicines."

"We are working diligently with payers to achieve the best possible formulary placement for PAXLOVID, resulting in low OOP costs for patients," the spokesperson added.

Pfizer cuts earnings outlook

Recently, Pfizer sharply scaled back its earnings outlook for the year, blaming lower-than-expected sales of two drugs used to treat Covid, the company said Friday.

It now "anticipates full-year 2023 revenues to be in the range of $58.0 to $61.0 billion, versus its previous guidance range of $67.0 to $70.0 billion," Pfizer announced in a statement.

Earnings per share - the benchmark for the markets - should come in at between 1.45 and 1.65 dollars, compared with 3.25 to 3.45 dollars previously anticipated.

The cut to Pfizer's guidance was "solely due to its COVID products," the company said.

"Full-year 2023 revenues for Paxlovid and Comirnaty are expected to be approximately $12.5 billion, a decline of $9.0 billion versus original expectations," it added.

Pfizer to price Covid treatment Paxlovid at $1,390 per course

The Department of Defense in the United States said in a Tuesday (Oct 17) report to Congress that more than 270 reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena, known as UAPs or UFOs, were made to the government in a recent eight-month period.

The unclassified report states that there was no evidence that any of the UAPs identified between Aug 30 of last year and Apr 30 of this year originated in space.

While none of the UAP reports have been confirmed to be of foreign origin, the possibility is being probed.

The US-based reports mentioned that the officials said many of the reports by military witnesses "present potential safety of flight concerns, and there are some cases where reported UAP have potentially exhibited one more concerning performance characteristics such as high-speed travel or unusual manoeuvrability".

None of these reports suggest the UAP manoeuvred to an unsafe proximity to civil or military aircraft. However, the report added that the mere presence of UAP in the airspace represents a potential hazard to flight safety.

Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, who is the Pentagon press secretary, said on Wednesday: "The safety of our service personnel, our bases and installations, and the protection of US operations security on land, in the skies, seas, and space are paramount."

"We take reports of incursions into our designated space, land, sea, or airspaces seriously and examine each one," Ryder added.

The agency is also probing 17 sightings that happened between 2019 and 2022 that hadn't been included in earlier reports.

NASA on alien probe

The US has taken the UFO and UAP phenomenon quote seriously, with NASA convening a group of experts in 2022 to review how data about UAPs is collected. The group in September said it found no evidence that UAPs are "extraterrestrial".

In September this year, NASA officially joined the search for UFOs, but reflecting the stigma attached to the field, the US space agency kept secret for hours the identity of the person heading a new programme tracking mystery flying objects.

The official's appointment is the result of a year-long NASA fact-finding report into UAP. "At NASA, it's in our DNA to explore - and to ask why things are the way they are," agency chief Bill Nelson said.

A prominent museum in the United States has announced that it would remove "human remains" from display, much of which were acquired in an era of imbalances of power, and used for promotion of debunked racial theories like white supremacy. The museum also condemned the "deeply flawed" practice of putting such things on displays.

In a letter written on Oct 12, the New York's American Museum of Natural History president Sean Decatur told the staff: "Human remains collections were made possible by extreme imbalances of power."

As per Decatur, who took up the position in April, many researchers in the 19th and 20th centuries used such collections to "advance deeply flawed scientific agendas rooted in white supremacy — namely, the identification of physical differences that could reinforce models of racial hierarchy".

The letter, published on its website, added, "Our Museum was the site of the Second Eugenics Congress in 1921, putting our institution’s civic and scientific authority behind a pseudo-scientific, racist, and xenophobic theory that was used to promote discriminatory policies.

Decatur called the research "disturbing morally" and "flat-out wrong scientifically".

Critics say that storing human remains has an educational value, but the museum president said in his letter that none of the items on display is so essential to the "goals and narrative" of the exhibition. "But at this moment, given the history of our human remains collections and how much we have still to learn, removal is the right course of action," the letter added.

The announcement means the museum will now get rid of human remains, including the skeletons of indigenous and enslaved people who didn't end up in graves. The museum now is aiming to re-do its entire collection.

In the statement, Decatur said, "We have the skeletal remains of approximately 12,000 individuals in the human osteology (skeletal) collection in the Division of Anthropology."

Decatur's statement revealed, "About 26% of the individuals in this collection are the skeletal remains of Native Americans from within the United States, with the remains of approximately 1,200 individuals housed at the Museum on behalf of the federal government and approximately 2,200 skeletal remains managed by our Cultural Resources Office according to the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)."

The collection also includes the bodies of around 400 New Yorkers, which were apparently collected as recently as the 1940s.

The remains are part of a "medical collection", whose bodies were initially given to medical schools.

The collection also has the bones of five Black adults unearthed from a Manhattan cemetery for enslaved people in 1903.

Here's what a New York museum is doing to tackle 'painful legacy' of ancestral human remains

The United States has released videos of some of the interceptions between American warplanes with Chinese aircraft in the past two years. The Pentagon said that more than 180 intercepts have occurred, which is more than the total intercepts over the previous decade.

The US military officials have called this trend concerning, calling out China for its increasingly dangerous behaviour in the skies.

However, the officials have not commented on how many of those close calls were "unsafe and unprofessional", which is a standard military term used when the interactions are actually dangerous.

The officials say that they released the footage to call out Chinese behaviour as the US claimed that such incidents are part of a larger trend of regional intimidation by Beijing. The US claims that such interceptions could accidentally lead to conflict.

The photos and videos are part of an annual report by the Pentagon which will be released soon. The report will analyse Chinese military power and the security threats, especially its influence in the Indo-Pacific.

A US official, while speaking to the news agency Reuters, said on the condition of anonymity that such interceptions have risen by 300 when it included manoeuvres near aircraft of allies.

US releases footage of incidents of Chinese jets performing 'coercive and risky' manoeuvres

Chinese sectists have started building a massive neutrino telescope in the South China Sea, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on Wednesday (Oct 18), providing some other details. The telescope is said to be the world's largest "ghost particle" detector, which will be 3,500 metres beneath the surface of the ocean.

The scientists hope that the telescope will help them to the origin of cosmic rays, which will solve the century-old puzzle of the exploration of the extreme universe.

The Tropical Deep-sea Neutrino Telescope (Trident), which is named Hailing (Ocean Bell) in Chinese, will be the largest and most advanced in the world when completed in 2030, the project team said.

The report stated that the Trident array will be anchored to the seabed 3.5km below the Western Pacific Ocean. The instrument will scan the surrounding seawater for the flashes of light generated when cosmic neutrinos collide with water molecules.

Neutrinos are the most abundant particles that have mass in the universe. It is said that every time atomic nuclei come together or break apart, they produce neutrinos.

As quoted, Xu Donglian of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the project's chief scientist and spokeswoman, said: "Using Earth as a shield, Trident will detect neutrinos penetrating from the opposite side of the planet."

"As Trident is near the equator, it can receive neutrinos coming from all directions with the rotation of the Earth, enabling all-sky observation without any blind spot," Xu further added while speaking at a news conference on Tuesday.

China working on world's largest deep sea telescope to explore cosmic rays origin

Venezuela's government and its political opposition on Tuesday agreed to electoral guarantees for 2024 presidential elections, paving the way for possible U.S. sanctions relief, though the deal did not lift bans on opposition candidates barred from public office.

The elections will take place in the second half of next year, and international observers - including from the European Union and United Nations - will oversee the vote, according to terms unveiled following a resumption of long-suspended talks.

Multiple sources had said ahead of Tuesday's announcement that the U.S. was prepared to ease some oil-related sanctions on OPEC member-nation Venezuela if Washington was satisfied President Nicolas Maduro had given enough ground to the opposition.

President Joe Biden's administration had said it would lift some long-standing punitive measures in exchange for democratic concessions from Maduro.

But as the White House studied the details of the agreement finalized in Barbados, it was unclear how soon the U.S. might act or how far it could go with sanctions relief.

"We welcome the Venezuelan-led political agreement reached today in Barbados," according to a joint statement from the U.S., EU, Britain and Canada, calling it a necessary step toward the "restoration of democracy in Venezuela."

However, the statement also reiterated calls for release of political prisoners, independence of the electoral process, freedom of expression and respect for human rights, issues that were not covered in Tuesday's agreement.

Reuters reported last week that Venezuela and the U.S. had progressed at their own talks in Qatar toward a deal that could allow at least one additional foreign oil firm to take Venezuelan crude oil for debt repayment if Maduro resumed negotiations with the opposition.

Any significant alleviation of oil sanctions would mark a further shift by the Biden administration away from former President Donald Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign against the socialist-led South American country.

But U.S. sources have said any U.S. policy changes would be reversible if Maduro failed to meet his election commitments. Oil revenues are crucial to Venezuela's crippled economy.

BANNED CANDIDATES

Tuesday's meeting in Barbados, brokered by Norway, was the first between the two sides in 11 months.

The talks, meant to provide a way out of Venezuela's long-running political and economic crisis, will continue at an unspecified date, the parties said, adding they are committed to respecting the results of the vote.

The deal says each side can choose its 2024 candidate according to its internal rules, but did not reverse bans on some opposition figures - including Oct. 22 primary frontrunner Maria Corina Machado - that prevent them from holding office.

The opposition has said the bans, handed down by the controller general, are unlawful and Washington has rejected any roadblocks to opposition candidates.

"If you have an administrative inhabilitation...from the controller general of the republic you cannot be a candidate, I want to clarify that," Jorge Rodriguez, the head of the government delegation told a press conference after the signing.

Speaking before Rodriguez, the head of the opposition delegation Gerardo Blyde had said the deal could allow banned candidates to "recover their rights."

The opposition has shied away from laying out what could happen if Machado were to win the primary but could not register for the general election.

It remains unclear whether the often-fractious opposition would accept her choosing another candidate to run in her stead.

At least two candidates who initially had been set to run in the primary have bowed out because they are banned.

Maduro, president since 2013, is expected to run for re-election but has not yet formalized his candidacy.

The U.S. imposed sanctions on Venezuela to punish Maduro's government following a 2018 election that Washington considered a sham. Since 2019, U.S. sanctions have banned PDVSA from exporting its oil to its chosen markets.

The other accord signed by the two sides includes an agreement to protect Houston-based oil refiner Citgo Petroleum, whose parent company's shares will be put for auction starting this month through a court-organized process to pay creditors.

The other accord signed by the two sides includes an agreement to protect Houston-based oil refiner Citgo Petroleum, whose parent company's shares will be put for auction starting this month through a court-organized process to pay creditors. Venezuela government, opposition sign election deal; US weighs sanctions relief

The Israeli army on Wednesday (Oct 17) said it had credible "evidence" that terrorists in Gaza Strip were responsible for the blast at a hospital. The blast which allegedly killed hundreds triggered global condemnation and sparked protests across the Middle East.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released the findings of a detailed probe into the alleged attack, claiming that the strike was not carried out by them.

Citing the aerial footage analysis, the IDF further alleged that the number of casualties has been inflated.

The Israel Army showed before and after footage and said nearby buildings suffered no structural damage or cratering which would have been seen in case of any aerial munition.

To support their claims of misfiring, IDF released an audio recording of Hamas operatives who were apparently talking about a misfired rocket causing the hospital blast.

Gaza hospital blast: Israel releases 'evidence' to blame terrorists for 'misfired' rocket

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (Oct 18) condemned the blast on a hospital in Gaza, which reportedly killed more than 500 people. PM Modi said that he was "deeply shocked" and added that the perpetrators must face justice.

"Civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict are a matter of serious and continuing concern. Those involved should be held responsible," Modi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Hundreds died and many sustained serious injuries after a strike was launched on the Al-Ahli al-Arabi hospital in Gaza. There are claims and counterclaims in the aftermath as Israel says the blast was caused by a Palestinian rocket that fell short.

Hamas denies that, with Palestinian officials claiming that the blast was caused by an Israeli air strike. Not just Hamas and Palestine, the Arab world is also blaming Israel for the strike.
