List of 7 Controversial Statues in the World

This Nelson's Column is in Trafalgar Square, London. It was built to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He defeated French military leader Napoleon. But history books have accused him of having "vigorously defended" the slave trade.

His statue was erected in 1879 in Sydney's Hyde Park. The statue bears an inscription that claims Cook "discovered" Australia. However, it is refuted by those who say tens of thousands of years of indigenous history have been ignored.

The sculpture shows a muscular man, with a baby in his arms. He is shown along with a half-naked woman. This was unveiled in 2010 but faced criticism for huge cost and for sexism.

It is a memorial for those who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War. It ended up being a controversial place as it is also the final resting place of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, who was a controversial figure as he rose to power with the help of Nazi Germany and fascist Italy.

This statue is said to be the only public monument dedicated to the devil. It is located within Madrid's Parque del Buen Retiro. It is controversial in Spain as it is inside a country famous for the Spanish Inquisition, a court system created to punish heretics.

The Brown Dog statue is linked to the Brown Dog Affair, which was a 1903 scandal that uncovered animal abuse at University College London. Inhumane anatomical experiments were made public in the scandal. Reports have said that a brown dog was just one of many animals allegedly used in vivisections.

This statue was unveiled in 1997 and says that Moscow is its home, but it said Peter actually hated Moscow. He apparently moved the country's capital city to St Petersburg. It was even named one of the world's ugliest statues in 2015.

Here's a list of controversial statues across the world.

What Is Placebo Effect? Treatment Is Fake but Response Can Be Real

Placebo effect occurs when the physical or mental health of a person appears to improve after taking a 'dummy' treatment. It refers to a treatment that appears real but is designed to have no therapeutic benefit.

Notably, "placebo" and the "placebo effect" are different things. The term placebo means the inactive substance itself. Meanwhile, the placebo effect refers to any effects of taking a medicine that cannot be attributed to the treatment itself.

Stimulated healing is not a new concept, but science has now found that a placebo can be effective just like the traditional treatments under the right circumstances.

While talking about the process, it is important to mention that placebos won't lower cholesterol, shrink a tumour, or cure cancer.

However, experts have said that placebos work on symptoms modulated by the brain, which is similar to the perception of pain. It has been understood that placebos may make a person feel better, but they will not cure him/her permanently.

In a report by Harvard Health Publishing, it is mentioned that placebos will be most effective for conditions like pain management, stress-related insomnia, and cancer treatment side effects.

There are side effects also as some people can experience more symptoms in response to a placebo. It is sometimes referred to as the "nocebo effect".

A new study has found that a 1-in-10,000-year radiation burst from space was so powerful that it shook the Earth's upper atmosphere last year. The Earth's atmosphere, whose ionisation stability is critical to the evolution and survival of life, is subjected to the effects of cosmic explosions that produce high-energy gamma-ray bursts (GRB).

The study, published in the journal Nature Communications on Tuesday (Nov 14), said that the long-lasting GRB of light was likely from a newborn black hole which was billions of light-years away.

The burst has been named GRB 221009A and the study, titled "Evidence of an upper ionospheric electric field perturbation correlated with a gamma-ray burst", said that burst is more commonly called the Brightest Of All Time (Boat).

GRB 221009A broke records when it struck Earth last year on Oct 9, coming from around 2.4 billion light-years from our planet. As per the study, the light blazing with up to 18 teraelectronvolts of energy in said to be the brightest space explosion ever recorded.

The researchers, including those from the University of L'Aquila in Italy, said that the large variations in the electric field of the Earth's upper ionosphere could be a result of the powerful GRB. The large variations in the electric field of the ionosphere are said to be at an altitude of some 500km.

As quoted by Science Alert, a team led by astrophysicist Mirko Piersanti of the University of L'Aquila and the National Institute of Astrophysics in Italy, said: "In this work, we present the evidence of variation of the ionospheric electric field at about 500 kilometres induced by the strong gamma-ray burst [that] occurred on October 9th, 2022."

"Using both satellite observations and a new ad hoc developed analytical model, we prove that the GRB 221009A deeply impacted the Earth's ionospheric conductivity, causing a strong perturbation not only in the bottom-side ionosphere but also in the top-side ionosphere (at around 500 kilometres)," it added.

Ukraine has claimed its troops have crossed the vast River Dnipro into occupied areas of the Kherson region. A top Ukrainian official also said that they have established a strong foothold on the eastern bank of the river, which divides the frontline in southern Ukraine.

The advancement is seen as a crucial point in overcoming one of Moscow's most significant strategic barriers in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The war-torn nation said that the troops are operating in small groups. Kviy added that it had dispatched more troops to stop Russia, which conceded on Wednesday. Zelensky said it had been a "difficult day" for Kyiv due to deadly Russian strikes in the east of the country.

The development was confirmed by Russia as it said on Wednesday that for the first time, some Ukrainian troops had established positions on the Moscow-held side of the Dnipro River.

Vladimir Saldo, who is the Moscow-installed head of Ukraine's Kherson region, said in a post on Telegram that "small groups" of Ukrainian soldiers were stretched along the eastern bank of the river, and had been "blocked" in the tiny village of Krynky.

"Our additional forces have now been deployed. The enemy is blocked in Krynky. A fiery hell has been arranged for them: bombs, rockets, heavy flamethrower systems, artillery shells and drones are flying at them," Saldo said.

In a historic move, France has issued an international arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accusing him of complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes over chemical attacks in 2013, news agencies reported on Wednesday (Nov 16) citing a judicial source.

The plaintiffs in the case also said that besides al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad and two other senior officials have also been included in the warrant.

The arrest warrants came in the aftermath of a criminal investigation into chemical attacks in the town of Douma and the district of Eastern Ghouta in Aug 2013.

Iran has slammed US

Earlier in the month, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday accused the United States of "encouraging" Israel to kill and carry out "cruel acts" against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

After the Oct 7 attack by Hamas militants, Israel has relentlessly bombarded Gaza and sent in ground troops, with the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory claiming that around 11,500 people died, around 40 per cent of them children.

Raisi had said at a joint news conference in Tehran that "the aid from the United States to the Zionist regime (Israel) is encouraging them to kill and commit cruel acts of neglect against the Palestinian people".

"We believe that the bombings must stop as soon as possible, that a ceasefire must be declared immediately and that aid be provided to the oppressed and proud people of Gaza," Raisi said.

"These horrible crimes against humanity are a genocide, which is carried out by the Zionist regime (Israel) with the support of the United States and certain European countries," he has added.

The UK foreign secretary also said that Britain would work with its allies "to make sure the attention is here in Ukraine". Britain's David Cameron meets Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on first working trip abroad as foreign minister

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has said that India is not ruling out the scope of a probe into Canada's allegations about the involvement of the Indian government's agents in the killing of a Khalistani separatist in that country. However, he also added that Canada needs to provide evidence to back its claims.

The remarks were made during his conversation, titled 'How a Billion People See the World', which was with veteran journalist Lionel Barber in London. Jaishankar said that if Canada has a "reason to make such an allegation please share the evidence because we are not ruling out an investigation" as he emphasised that Ottawa has not shared any evidence with India to support its allegations.

He said, "We have told the Canadians...The context is that in Canada, we feel that Canadian politics has given space to violent and extreme political opinions which advocate separatism from India, including through violent means. These people have been accommodated in Canadian politics. They are given the freedom to articulate their views."

During his recent remarks, Jaishankar said that freedom of speech and freedom of expression come with a certain responsibility and the misuse of those freedoms and the toleration of that misuse for political purposes would be very wrong.

"Look, if you have a reason to make such an allegation, please share the evidence with us. We are not ruling out an investigation and looking at anything which they may have to offer. They haven't done so," he added.

Nijjar killing

Earlier this year in June, separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot by car-borne shooters in British Columbia's Surrey.

The death led to a diplomatic row between India and Canada, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claiming that his government was probing "credible allegations" of a "potential link" which connects the government of India to the killing.

New Delhi, which had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020, refuted the allegations, calling them "absurd and motivated".

Referring to the pro-Khalistani activities in Canada, he mentioned that the toleration of that misuse for political purposes would be very wrong.

The Indian minister also recalled the attacks on the High Commission of India in Canada, smoke bomb attacks on the High Commission and Consulate General, and more.

Follow 10 Rules of Ikigai to Live a Long and Happy Life

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life, by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles, is not just a book. It is said to be a case study on the lives of the long-living residents of Ogimi, which is a small village in Okinawa.

The book concludes 10 ten rules that are compiled by the residents of the village. The rules are:

"Those who give up the things they love doing and do well lose their purpose in life. That's why it's so important to keep doing things of value..."

"Being in a hurry is inversely proportional to the quality of life."

"Less is more when it comes to eating for long life, too. According to the 80 per cent rule, in order to stay healthier longer, we should eat a little less than our hunger demands instead of stuffing ourselves."

"Friends are the best medicine, there for confiding worries over a good chat, sharing stories that brighten your day, getting advice, having fun, dreaming...in other words, living."

"Water moves; it is at its best when it flows fresh and doesn’t stagnate. The body you move through in life needs a bit of daily maintenance to keep it running for a long time. Plus, exercise releases hormones that make us feel happy."

"A cheerful attitude is not only relaxing – it also helps make friends. It's good to recognize the things that aren't so great, but we should never forget what a privilege it is to be in the here and now in a world so full of possibilities."

"Are you familiar with the Japanese word shinrin-yoku. It translates to 'forest bathing' and means connecting with nature using the five senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch."

"To your ancestors, to nature, which provides you with the air you breathe and the food you eat, to your friends and family, to everything that brightens your days and makes you feel lucky to be alive."

"Stop regretting the past and fearing the future. Today is all you have. Make the most of it. Make it worth remembering."

“There is a passion inside you, a unique talent that gives meaning to your days and drives you to share the best of yourself until the very end."
