Should You Quit Eating Cabbage Because Of The Fear Of Worms?

Cabbage is a popular vegetable in Indian homes, but there are misconceptions, like the idea that eating it raw can lead to tapeworms and Neurocysticercosis, a parasitic infection of the central nervous system. Let’s explore whether raw cabbage is safe to eat.

According to a widespread belief, consuming raw cabbage can result in tapeworm infestation, leading to Neurocysticercosis, a condition affecting the nervous system and brain. However, experts say the tapeworms responsible for Neurocysticercosis typically enter the body due to unsanitary conditions like open defecation in agricultural fields and consumption of uninspected, undercooked pork. This situation can be fatal if overlooked.

Independence Day 2023: 7 Mistakes To Avoid While Hoisting Indian National Flag

As per a report by The Tribune, citing Professor Gagandeep Singh from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, tapeworm infestation stems from sanitation issues and uninspected pork consumption. Treatment involves medication, with surgery being rare. Initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have led to a decline in Neurocysticercosis cases by curbing open defecation.

Experts suggest that open defecation in agricultural areas is a primary cause of tapeworm infestation. The simplest way to address this is by thoroughly washing and cooking vegetables and leafy greens. It can be concluded that consuming cabbage does not directly cause tapeworm infestation in the brain and body. However, any vegetable grown in unsanitary conditions may pose a risk of tapeworm contamination.

Located in Deshnoke, this temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, a female Hindu sage. It’s believed that the rats in the temple are her reincarnated devotees, and they are revered and protected. Many pilgrims feed these rats to seek blessings.

Carved during the 8th century, this monolithic temple is an architectural wonder. It features intricate carvings depicting various Hindu deities, mythological scenes, and symbolic motifs. Its construction, which involved removing tonnes of rock, remains a mystery.

Built by King Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is renowned for its massive granite structure, intricate carvings, and the colossal lingam (symbol of Shiva) housed within.

Devoted to Kal Bhairav, a fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva, this temple is unique for its rituals involving alcohol offerings and prayers for resolution of disputes. The deity is believed to be the guardian of the city.

Situated atop the Nilachal Hill, this temple is one of the most revered Shakti Peeths in India. It’s associated with the legend of Goddess Sati, whose genitalia fell here during Lord Shiva’s tandava (cosmic dance). The temple hosts the Ambubachi Mela, a fertility festival.

Known for its immense wealth, this temple gained international attention when vaults containing treasures worth billions of dollars were discovered within its premises. Some of these vaults are said to be guarded by mystical curses, preventing them from being opened.

Despite thousands of guests from various backgrounds being invited to the ceremony, the President's name was notably absent from the guest list. This omission led opposition parties to criticise the Narendra Modi government, alleging that President Murmu, with her tribal background, was being overlooked.

Prominent opposition leaders who were initially invited to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony also opted out, alleging that the event had been politicised by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). They pointed to statements made by some spiritual leaders indicating that the temple's inauguration was premature, as construction was still ongoing.

Amid a scorching heatwave in the Philippines, a zoo is providing tigers with frozen treats made from animal blood and is restricting lion mating during the hottest hours of the day. Manila has experienced record-high temperatures, compelling schools nationwide to suspend in-person classes. As residents seek refuge in air-conditioned malls and pools, animals at Manila Zoo are also seeking relief from the extreme heat.

Ensuring the prevention of heatstroke, especially among the large cats, was the primary concern, according to zoo veterinarian Dave Vinas in an interview with AFP on Tuesday, as temperatures soared to 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the city.

To reduce temperatures inside the concrete enclosures, water is continuously splashed on the walls and ground throughout the day.

Frozen treats, dubbed "bloodsicles," consisting of frozen ground beef or chicken mixed with animal blood and vitamins, are provided for the big cats to lick.

In the face of strong competition from local rivals, the international ride-hailing giant Uber has officially halted its operations in Pakistan. This decision follows its withdrawal from several major cities in 2022.

"Our subsidiary brand, Careem, will continue operations offering ride-hailing services across Pakistan," the spokesperson said, reported Press Trust of India.

Back in 2019, Uber purchased its competitor Careem for a sum of USD 3.1 billion.

Both companies said they would keep running their own services with their own names.

Uber had stopped working in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad in 2022. It was using the Careem app in these cities and also in Lahore.

Now, the company will focus on growing the Careem app in Pakistan. So, people who used Uber will need to switch to Careem because Uber has stopped working in Pakistan starting Tuesday.

A 98-year-old woman from Ukraine recounted how she traversed 10 kilometres amid heavy shelling, using sticks for support and sleeping on the ground.

Originally from Ocheretyne in Donetsk, now under Russian occupation, she wanted to reach areas controlled by Kyiv. In a video shared by Ukraine's police on social media, the woman, known as Lidia Stepanivna, shared that despite facing a major risk to her life, she kept going.

"I survived that war (World War Two), and I am surviving this war," Stepanivna said in the video, which shows her sitting on a bed in a shelter, dressed in an oversized coat and a scarf tied on her head, a wooden stick still in her hand. "I'm left with nothing. But I left my Ukraine on feet."
