While fishing for bony fish off the Chilean coast, some fishermen made an unexpected discovery in their gill nets—they had captured a species believed to be lost. Described in 1887 as the Chilean angel shark, this small, flat shark resembling a ray lives in shallow coastal waters. However, a recent study published in the European Journal of Taxonomy (April 25th) suggested that the initial description was incomplete and inaccurate, according to The Miami Herald.

The researchers found that the 1887 study provided only a few body measurements, which were insufficient to distinguish this specimen from its close relatives. Additionally, the collected animal was lost, leaving a significant gap in scientific understanding of the Chilean angel shark. While occasional bycatches provided glimpses of the species over time, a comprehensive description remained elusive. Then, fate intervened, and the elusive sharks landed in the hands of the fishermen.

Researches confirm the discovery of once-lost Chilean angel shark

After catching their unexpected discovery, the fishermen froze two whole sharks and the head of a third before sending them to the National Museum of Natural History in Santiago, Chile. Researchers there were excited to confirm that they had found two Squatina armata, also known as Angelote in Spanish and Chilean angel shark in English.

The study details the sharks as measuring slightly over three feet long and having flattened bodies, making them resemble rays more than sharks.

Adding to their distinctive appearance, these sharks have "enlarged dorsal thorns" – small, sharp, hook-shaped protrusions found on both their heads and backs, according to the researchers.

Despite this encounter, the Chilean angel shark remains shrouded in mystery. Limited research and rare sightings have led to their classification as "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.

According to NOAA, these creatures are "nocturnal bottom-dwellers," spending most of their lives buried within the sand and mud of coastal sediment.

"Recent taxonomic studies on angel sharks ... with this updated morphological characterization of the Chilean angel shark, questions on geographic range, estimations of abundance, and real incidence in landings can be clarified to ultimately inform better conservation practices of this critically endangered species and other angel sharks on the Pacific coast of America," the researchers said.

The sharks were caught near Playa Seremeno in northern Chile on the Pacific coast.

A concerning development has surfaced in the case of Dr. Dharmesh Patel, an Indian-American radiologist currently incarcerated in Redwood City jail. In light of an incident in 2023 where Dr Patel purportedly drove his vehicle off a 250-foot cliff at Devil Slide in California on January 2, with his family onboard, medical experts now suggest he was undergoing a psychotic episode during the incident.

Subsequently, he was arrested at Stanford Hospital shortly after the accident on suspicion of attempting to kill his wife and two children.

In 2023, Dharmesh Arvind Patel, his wife Neha (41), and their two kids—a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy—were in the car. Patel was driving on the Pacific Coast Highway when he suddenly drove off the road. Everyone in the car, including Patel, his wife, and their kids, survived without injuries.

As per Steve Wagstaffe, the district attorney of San Mateo County, two medical professionals informed investigators that Patel experienced a mental breakdown at the time of the crash, believing that his two children were being trafficked for sexual exploitation, The Los Angeles Times stated on April 24.

A case review of Dr Dharmesh Patel conducted by psychologist Dr Mark Patterson revealed Patel's state, suggesting he was grappling with a mental disorder that had escalated prior to the event. In discussions with medical professionals, Patel mentioned hearing footsteps approaching him from behind, a fact supported by his wife. Initially, Patel informed investigators that he was battling depression and had contemplated driving his car off a cliff.

What's Patel's current status?

The 42-year-old has been held responsible for the incident, resulting in the suspension of his medical license. Patel is presently pursuing a mental health diversion programme, which would include being released from custody to undergo a two-year treatment regimen.

Previously, regulatory authorities, in their legal documents, asserted that Patel presented "a significant threat to public safety" due to impaired cognitive functions essential for safe medical practice.

With this recent development, should he refrain from engaging in further criminal activities or violating any stipulated terms during his release, the charges against him will be dismissed.

However, prosecutors contend that the psychiatrist appointed to diagnose Patel on their behalf did not diagnose him with major depressive disorder with psychosis but rather identified him as suffering from Schizoaffective Disorder. They have presented their argument advocating for the case to remain in court.

Indian-American doctor who drove Tesla off cliff had major psychotic episode, report says

A gold pocket watch recovered from the wealthiest passenger aboard the Titanic fetched a staggering £1.2 million ($1.46 million), setting a new record for Titanic memorabilia sales.

The watch, once owned by businessman John Jacob Astor who died with the ship in 1912 at 47, was acquired by a private collector in the US at Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, during an auction on Saturday.

This breaks the previous record of £1.1 million paid for a violin played during the Titanic's sinking, also sold by the same auction house in 2013.

A representative for the auction house mentioned that the £1.2 million ($1.46 million) price tag for the pocket watch covered all fees and taxes borne by the purchaser.

Similarly, the case for the violin was also sold at the same auction for £360,000, inclusive of fees and taxes.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge expressed to the PA news agency that the prices achieved for the Titanic memorabilia during the sale were “absolutely incredible”.

He said: “They reflect not only the importance of the artefacts themselves and their rarity but they also show the enduring appeal and fascination with the Titanic story.

“112 years later, we are still talking about the ship and the passengers and the crew. The thing with the Titanic story, it’s effectively a large ship hits an iceberg with a tragic loss of life, but more importantly is 2,200 stories," he added.

Rather than trying to get on another lifeboat, John Jacob Astor, who was from a wealthy family, was last seen chatting and smoking. A week later, his body was found in the ocean, along with his fancy gold pocket watch.

Aldridge said: “Astor is well known as the richest passenger [on] board the RMS Titanic and was thought to be among the richest people in the world at that time, with a net worth of roughly $87m – equivalent to several billion dollars today.

“At 11.40pm on 14 April 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg and started to take on water," he said.

“At first, Astor did not believe the ship was in any serious danger, but later it was apparent she was sinking and the captain had started an evacuation after midnight, so he helped his wife into lifeboat 4,” he added.

Madeleine Astor lived through the disaster, and her husband's body was found close to where the Titanic sank on April 22nd.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, went to China on a surprise visit on Sunday (April 28), as reported by Reuters. China is Tesla's second-biggest market for electric vehicles. Musk's trip to India was postponed last week due to Tesla commitments. He had plans to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announce Tesla's entry into the Indian market.

Now in China, Musk wants to meet with Chinese officials in Beijing to talk about deploying Full-Self Driving (FSD) software and getting approval to use data collected in China to improve Tesla's self-driving technology.

Musk responded to a question on social media platform X by mentioning that Tesla might offer Full-Self Driving (FSD) to customers in China "very soon." It's worth noting that Musk's trip to China was not widely publicised.

As reported by Reuters, Tesla has been storing all data gathered by its fleet in Shanghai since 2021, as mandated by Chinese regulators, and hasn't transferred any data back to the United States.

What's the FSD software?

The American electric vehicle manufacturer introduced Full-Self Driving (FSD), the most advanced version of its Autopilot software, four years ago. However, it has not yet released it in China, despite customer requests for its availability.

Musk's visit aligns with the Beijing autoshow, which started last week and concludes on May 4. Tesla does not have a presence at China's largest autoshow this year, having last participated in 2021. Instead, the company has announced intentions to use its current factories to manufacture new and more cost-effective vehicles.

Outside the venue where President Joe Biden was supposed to speak at the yearly White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner, pro-Palestinian protestors gathered to protest Israel's ongoing military actions in Gaza.

On Saturday night (April 27), they stood outside the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C., showing their disagreement with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Inside the hotel, members of the press, and politicians were coming together for the event celebrating press freedom. One most striking thing at the protest was a big Palestinian flag hanging down the side of the hotel.

The conflict began when the Palestinian militant group Hamas initiated an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,200 casualties and over 200 hostages.

Over the course of the nearly seven-month-long war, the Palestinian death toll has exceeded 34,000, with more than 76,000 people sustaining injuries, according to the Associated Press reports, citing information from the Gaza Health Ministry. While the ministry, controlled by Hamas, does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its tally, it states that at least two-thirds of the casualties have been children and women.

Inside the hotel, members of the press, and politicians were coming together for the event celebrating press freedom. One most striking thing at the protest was a big Palestinian flag hanging down the side of the hotel. A Chilean TikToker named Luis Alvarez decided to splurge on a new television, but the method of payment was anything but ordinary. Equipped with just a metal detector, he scoured the area to collect the amount in about seven days, as reported by Reuters.

"It took me about seven days to collect the coins. As I said, it's the amount I usually collect every week, between 200,000 and 250,000 pesos ($210 - $263 USD) in coins alone, and because I had to buy a television because of an unfortunate event with my daughter. I put them together, I spent a whole night cleaning them. It was very late and I couldn't go to the bank. So I took all these coins and put them in little bags of 100 ($0.11 USD), 500 ($0.53 USD), 50 ($0.053 USD) and set off to find a store that would take them," he told Reuters.

Alvarez mentioned that every coin was discovered either in parks or on the beach.

5 Natural Ingredients to Reduce Body Hair Growth

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and when applied topically, it can help inhibit hair growth.

Papaya contains an enzyme called papain, which can break down hair follicles and inhibit hair growth when applied to the skin.

Spearmint has anti-androgenic properties, meaning it can reduce the levels of male hormones (such as testosterone) in the body, which are associated with hair growth. Drinking spearmint tea regularly may help reduce unwanted hair growth.

Chickpea flour, also known as gram flour or besan, has exfoliating properties that can help remove dead skin cells and hair from the skin's surface.

Lemon juice has bleaching properties that can lighten and weaken hair over time, making it less noticeable. Applying freshly squeezed lemon juice to the skin regularly may help reduce hair growth and lighten existing hair.

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Japan's Bonin Islands, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on Saturday (April 27). The quake occurred at a depth of 503.2 km (312.7 miles). The US National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued based on the available data.

Japan, a country familiar with seismic activity, faced the aftermath of a strong 7.6 magnitude earthquake on New Year's Day, 2024.

Taking a global perspective, recent seismic events serve as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of earthquakes. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southeast Turkey last year claimed over 50,000 lives, while the 2015 Nepal earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8, resulted in approximately 9,000 casualties. In October of the same year, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, claiming the lives of more than 2,000 people.

Japan's geographical location places it squarely within the seismic 'Pacific Ring of Fire', subjecting the country to approximately 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude six or greater every year.

A staggering 2,000 quakes, perceptible to its population, remind Japan of its seismic vulnerability annually, though not all result in casualties.

Lessons in preparedness

Japan's reputation as a global leader in earthquake readiness stems from its deep understanding of geology, careful planning, and ongoing adjustments. Positioned where three significant tectonic plates meet, including the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, Japan experiences intense forces generated by their constant movement.

Japan's resilience to earthquakes rests on strict building codes, an advanced warning system, and widespread emergency drills. Trains stop during quakes, and households have survival kits. Vending machines offer free supplies during disasters. Coastal defenses guard against tsunamis. Despite recent challenges, Japan's earthquake readiness sets a global standard for resilience.

Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered on the runway of Bangkok's main airport on Saturday (April 27), reaching toward the reddening sky as they laid out their mats.

Despite the early morning flights rumbling overhead, participants engaged in their yoga practice, including the downward dog pose. This unique event took place on the airport's third runway, which is still under construction.

Alongside the workout, participants were provided with beverages such as coconut, iced tea, and water to enhance their routine. Around 500 yoga practitioners and camera-ready influencers began arriving at 5:00 am, navigating in the darkness to find their designated spots on the runway.

As the sun came up, yoga instructors led the group through two sessions with high spirits, despite the pollution, industrial surroundings, and occasional airplane noise.

"This was something fun, this was a nice event," said lawyer Rugeradh Tungsupakul, attending with a friend.

"Right now, because of our jobs, we are too busy to go to a yoga studio," she told AFP.

Despite Rugeradh's concerns about pollution, a common problem in the smoggy city of Bangkok, which often ranks among the world's most polluted cities, she mentioned that they had checked the air quality before heading to the event.

Trump challenged Biden to a debate, expressing openness to various formats, including one in a courthouse. Despite skipping GOP candidate debates earlier, he's keen on debating Biden before the 2024 election.

"Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters," Trump posted on Truth Social.

"I suggest Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, or Wednesday Evening at my Rally in Michigan, a State that he is in the process of destroying with his E.V. Mandate," he further wrote.

During an interview with radio host Howard Stern on Friday, Biden stated that he is willing to debate Trump.

"I am, somewhere, I don’t know when, but I am happy to debate him,” Biden said in the interview.

If the proposed dates are not feasible, Trump suggested holding the debate at the New York courthouse where he is facing trial for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments to a former Playboy Playmate and an adult film actress before the 2016 election.

"In the alternative, he’s in New York City today, although probably doesn’t know it, and so am I, stuck in one of the many Court cases that he instigated as ELECTION INTERFERENCE AGAINST A POLITICAL OPPONENT - A CONTINUING WITCH HUNT! It’s the only way he thinks he can win," Trump wrote.

"In fact, let’s do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight - on National Television, I’ll wait around!", he added.

Trump previously stated he's willing to campaign from the courthouse, seeing it as feasible.

He's using his New York trial to raise campaign funds, occasionally giving short speeches at news conferences. Trump will spend four days a week in court for several weeks.
