India's Education Ministry has told NCERT to check textbooks every year before printing new ones for each academic year. This will make sure any needed changes are made in time.

The NCERT releases new textbooks annually before the start of the academic year. Although there isn't a set requirement to review textbooks each year, the Council has been updating content since 2017. In 2022-2023, significant changes were made as part of a syllabus revision in order to ease student stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Ministry has told the NCERT that books should be reviewed on a yearly basis. They are soon going to put that system in place. It is important that when a student buys a book ahead of the new session it has to be the updated version of that book,” said an official, as quoted by ANI.

Explaining the reason behind it, the official said, “NCERT books once published should not remain the same for many years. They should be reviewed every year before printing and if any changes have to be made or some new facts have to be added, they should be included in the books. For instance, topics like Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are evolving. So far, there had been no mandate of yearly review of the textbooks.”

As per the official mentioned, it will require a minimum of two years to publish textbooks for all classes in accordance with the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

This year, NCERT is updating textbooks to match the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) from last year, following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

So far, only new textbooks for classes 3rd and 6th have been released in line with the NCF. The revisions include hefty changes in History, Political Science, and Sociology textbooks. Some topics like Babri Masjid, Hindutva politics, the 2002 Gujarat riots, and minorities have been removed.

In the mountainous Colombian town of San Bernardo, an unusual discovery has left residents and experts confused. Clovisnerys Bejarano kneels before a glass box containing her mother's body, a sight that defies the passage of 30 years. Saturnina Torres de Bejarano, dressed in the same attire she was buried in, appears remarkably preserved, as if in a peaceful sleep, with a faux red carnation clasped in her hands.

"She still has her little brown face, round, her braids, her hair," Bejarano, 63, told AFP at her mother's final resting place in a museum displaying her body

The phenomenon of spontaneous mummification has puzzled the people of San Bernardo for decades. Despite many attempts to unravel its mystery, the exact cause remains hidden. Some attribute it to divine intervention, viewing it as a reward or punishment from God. Others speculate that the town's healthy lifestyle and temperate climate play a role, but conclusive evidence is still lacks.

The town's cemetery, situated on a steep mountain slope, has become a focal point of scientific inquiry. Experts believe that the unique conditions within the burial vaults may contribute to the preservation process.

Elon Musk pushed for China's approval for Tesla to roll out advanced driver-assistance systems in a whirlwind trip to Beijing that ended on Monday, a step that could boost revenues at a time when Tesla is under pressure from Chinese rivals.

Tesla CEO Musk arrived in the Chinese capital on Sunday where he was expected to discuss the rollout of Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and permission to transfer driving data overseas, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

His meetings included one with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who praised Tesla's development in China as a successful example of China's economic and trade cooperation though state media did not say if the two had discussed FSD.

Still, the US automaker won a key endorsement that coincided with his trip - from a top Chinese auto association which said Tesla's Model 3 and Y cars were among models found to be compliant with China's data security requirements.

Two separate sources also told Reuters Tesla had reached an agreement with Baidu to use the Chinese tech giant's mapping license for data collection on China's public roads, which they described as a key step for FSD to be introduced in the country.

Tesla shares were last up 7% in premarket trade.

Data security and compliance have been among the reasons why the U.S. electric vehicle maker, which rolled out the most autonomous version of its Autopilot software four years ago, has yet to make FSD fully available in China, its second-largest market globally, despite customer demand.

Chinese regulators had since 2021 required Tesla to store all data collected by its Chinese fleet in Shanghai, leaving the company unable to transfer any back to the United States.

Musk is looking to obtain approval to transfer data collected in the country abroad to train algorithms for its autonomous driving technologies, the person said.

Musk's visit to China, first reported by Reuters, was not flagged publicly and the person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak with media.

The plane that Musk arrived on departed from Beijing Capital Airport at 0517 GMT, according to Chinese flight tracking app Flight Manager and was headed to Anchorage, Alaska.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk's departure.

It remains unclear as to what, if any, other regulatory approvals Tesla will need to obtain or what conditions the company may have before it makes FSD fully available in China.

Equity analysts at Wedbush called the surprise visit "a major moment for Tesla".

Rival Chinese automakers and suppliers such as XPeng and Huawei Technologies have been seeking to gain an advantage over Tesla by rolling out similar software.

Hu Xijin, a former editor of state-backed tabloid Global Times who regularly posts in support of China's official position, said on his Weibo account that Tesla was the only foreign-funded automaker to meet China's data compliance requirements and said that this would pave the way for Tesla cars to enter premises owned by government agencies and state-owned firms across China.

"This is not only a breakthrough in China, but also a significant demonstration for the entire world in solving data security issues," he said.

Musk's visit came just over a week after he scrapped a planned trip to India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing "very heavy Tesla obligations".

Musk had been set on his cancelled India trip to announce $2 billion to $3 billion in new investments, including in a car plant, after India offered lower import taxes on EVs in return under a new policy.

CHINA DATA

Tesla cars have for years been banned from entering Chinese military complexes over security concerns relating to cameras installed on its vehicles. Its cars have also been turned away from sites holding important political events, such as an annual summer leadership conclave the ruling Communist Party held in 2022.

He Xiaopeng, the CEO of XPeng whose XNGP Advanced Driver Assistance System is similar to FSD, said on his Weibo account he welcomed the entry of the Tesla technology into China.

"Only when we have better products and technologies entering [China], can we provide a better experience to the market and customers and let the market develop in a healthy manner and at a faster pace," he said.

"Let a hundred flowers bloom," he said, echoing a famous line from Chairman Mao Zedong, the founder of modern China.

The improved prospect of FSD entering China comes as Tesla shares have lost almost a third of their value since the start of the year, as concerns have grown about the EV maker's growth trajectory. Last week, Tesla reported its first decline in quarterly revenue since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic slowed production and deliveries.

Musk said last week that Tesla would introduce new cheaper models using its current EV platforms and production lines and would offer a new "robotaxi" with self-driving technology. He said on X this month that he would unveil the robotaxi on Aug. 8.

China's complicated traffic conditions with more pedestrians and cyclists than in many other markets provide more scenarios that are key for training autonomous driving algorithms at a faster pace, according to industry experts.

"If Musk is able to obtain approval from Beijing to transfer data collected in China abroad this would be a 'game changer' around the acceleration of training its algorithms for its autonomous technology globally," Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said in a note.

Musk said this month that Tesla may make FSD available to customers in China "very soon", in response to a query on X.

Besides meeting Li on the short trip to Beijing, Musk met the organiser of the ongoing Beijing auto show. The chairman of Chinese battery giant CATL Robin Zeng, a key Tesla battery supplier, also visited Musk's hotel on Monday, according to a Reuters witness.

During the demolition of an old high school in Owatonna, Minnesota, workers found a time capsule that had been buried for over a century. The contents of the capsule were shown to the public for the first time at a press conference held this week, as reported by CBS News.

During the event, Bob Olson, who serves as the director of facilities, infrastructure, and security at Owatonna Public Schools, mentioned that the capsule was found during the demolition of an old school building. According to the Owatonna People's Press, the school in question was the former Owatonna High School, which was built in 1921.

Olson told the construction crew to carefully remove a cornerstone during the demolition. They found a time capsule inside it, which had been placed there in 1920. Inside, they found many things, including an old student newspaper, reports about money, a list of important people, items from a local group, and even a booklet written in Czech. They also found out that there were only 327 students at the school back then.

Elstad stated that they will sort through the documents in the capsule to find those directly connected to the school district. In Bengaluru, a doctor sprang into action to rescue a woman who collapsed at a polling booth earlier on Friday (April 26). Dr Ganesh Srinivasa Prasad, a nephrologist and transplant physician, was waiting in line with many others when the woman fainted.

According to Dr Prasad, the woman suffered a cardiac arrest at the polling booth. Recognising that she had no pulse, the nephrologist from Bengaluru immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). His intervention successfully revived the woman, who regained spontaneous circulation shortly afterwards.

Dr Prasad shared a photograph of the woman collapsed on the ground and a video showing her awake and being assisted onto a stretcher.

“As I was waiting in queue....one lady had syncope and cardiac arrest in front of me. There was no pulse and I started immediate CPR ... luckily she got ROSC within minutes,” he wrote.

Lok Sabha Election 2024: Bengaluru doctor performs CPR on woman in cardiac arrest at polling booth

A village settlement that dates back nearly 300 years, which was submerged by a dam in the 1970s, has resurfaced in the northern Philippines as a result of an extended period of drought.

Sections of the village, such as a church and tombstones, became visible as the waters of the Pantabangan Dam in Nueva Ecija province receded.

The water levels of the dam have decreased by almost 50 metres below their usual level, marking the sixth occasion on which the village has reappeared since the dam was built.

"This is the longest time (it was visible) based on my experience," Paladin told news agency AFP.

Half of the provinces in the Philippines, including Nueva Ecija, are officially facing drought conditions.

The ongoing heatwave is putting pressure on power supplies in Luzon, the country's primary island, which contributes three-quarters of the nation's economic output. According to the Philippines' grid operator, 13 power plants have gone offline, reducing reserves.

In response to a forecast of record-high heat indices, the Philippines' Ministry of Education has instructed public schools to transition to online learning.

Rising temperatures in Indonesia have led to a significant increase in dengue fever cases. Last month, reported cases jumped to 35,000, a sharp rise from 15,000 the previous year.

Delta Airlines Boeing plane's emergency exit slide detaches mid-air: Report

US intelligence agencies have said that Russian President Vladimir Putin probably did not personally order the killing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny at an Arctic prison camp in February, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Saturday (April 27).

Navalny, aged 47 at the time of his death, was known as one of Putin's most vocal critics within Russia. His allies, who have been labelled extremists by authorities, have accused Putin of orchestrating Navalny's killing and have said they would present evidence to support their accusation.

The Kremlin has refuted any state involvement, with Putin describing Navalny's death as "sad" last month and expressing willingness to exchange the jailed politician with the West, on the condition that Navalny would not return to Russia.

Navalny's associates claimed discussions about such an exchange had been ongoing. According to unnamed sources familiar with the situation, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, US intelligence agencies have determined that Putin likely did not give the order to have Navalny killed in February.

While Washington hasn't fully cleared Putin of responsibility for Navalny's death, it acknowledges Navalny was targeted by Russian authorities for years, jailed on what the West sees as politically motivated charges, and poisoned with a nerve agent in 2020. The Kremlin has denied involvement in the poisoning.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, responding to the Journal's report, called it "empty speculation".

"I've seen the material, I wouldn't say it's high quality material that deserves attention," Peskov told reporters when asked about the matter.

The US evaluation considered various sources, including classified intel and public facts like the timing of Navalny's death, which coincided with Putin's reelection in March, according to sources cited by the paper. Leonid Volkov, a top aide to Navalny, dismissed the US findings as naive and absurd.
