Conservation authorities&nbsp;on Friday (April 26) said that herds of endangered hippos, trapped in the mud of dried-up ponds, are at risk of dying in drought-hit Botswana. Southern Africa has been hit hard by a severe drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon, affecting harvests and leading millions into hunger.

Several countries in the region have recently declared a state of national disaster.

Close to the expansive wetlands of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana, the Thamalakane River, now dried up, has forced&nbsp;herds of hippos to migrate towards natural water reserves near the tourist town of Maun.

"The river system dries up and animals are in a compromised situation," said Lesego Moseki, spokesperson for Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) to AFP in Botswana's capital Gaborone.

Botswana is home to one of the world's largest wild hippo populations, estimated between 2,000 to 4,000 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

"The riverine vegetation is poor and the hippo in Ngamiland (northwestern district) depends on the water flowing through the Okavango Delta systems," Moseki said adding, "They were still looking into the how many hippos had died in the pools,".

Hippos have thick yet sensitive skin, requiring regular bathing to prevent sunburn, and they typically live in&nbsp;humid regions.

Endangered hippos trapped in dried ponds amid African drought

On Friday afternoon (April 26), Omaha, Nebraska, and Iowa were struck by destructive tornadoes, causing significant damage to hundreds of homes and structures in the two states.

Three people were injured as a result of the tornadoes. Reports indicate that multiple tornadoes were seen&nbsp;in at least five US states, with the most destructive storm moving from rural areas into the suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city with a population of 485,000.

Additionally, there were 19 severe squalls and 45 hailstorms reported following a major weather event on Friday.

Social media posts showed destroyed homes and toppled trees in rural areas near Omaha due to storms. Roads were blocked by law enforcement. Many houses in Omaha, especially in the Elkhorn area, were damaged, according to Omaha police. Police and firefighters searched door-to-door to help those trapped. Omaha Fire Chief stated that teams focused on the worst-hit area&nbsp;and had a plan to search for anyone trapped.

On Friday(April 26), New York prosecutors announced that they had given back 30 antiquities to Cambodia and Indonesia. These artefacts, which were illegally&nbsp;obtained and traded by American networks of dealers and traffickers, were estimated to be worth a total of $3 million.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated that in two recent ceremonies, 27 pieces were returned to Phnom Penh and three to Jakarta. Among the returned items were a bronze statue of the Hindu god Shiva (known as the "Shiva Triad"), taken from Cambodia, and a stone bas-relief depicting two royal figures from the Majapahit empire (dating from the 13th to 16th century), which was stolen from Indonesia.

Bragg accused Subhash Kapoor, an Indian-American art dealer, and American Nancy Wiener of involvement in the illegal trafficking of antiquities.

Kapoor, alleged to have operated a network trafficking stolen items from Southeast Asia for sale in his Manhattan gallery, has been under investigation by US authorities for over ten years under the name "Hidden Idol."

Arrested in Germany in 2011, Kapoor was extradited to India, where he was tried and sentenced to 13 years in prison in November 2022.

Despite facing charges in the US for conspiracy to traffic stolen art, Kapoor denied any wrongdoing.

"We are continuing to investigate the wide-ranging trafficking networks that... target Southeast Asian antiquities," Bragg said in the statement.

"There is clearly still much more work to do."

Wiener, convicted in 2021 for trafficking stolen art, attempted to sell the bronze Shiva but eventually donated it to the Denver Museum of Art in 2007.

The antiquity was confiscated by New York courts in 2023.

Under Bragg's leadership, the Antiquities Trafficking Unit has recovered nearly 1,200 items stolen from over 25 countries, valued at more than $250 million.

New York serves as a major hub for trafficking, with various works seized in recent years from institutions such as the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art and from private collectors.

How To Make Tasty Kachi Haldi Achaar (Raw Turmeric Pickle) At Home

250 grams fresh turmeric roots (kachi haldi), peeled and thinly sliced, 2-3 green chilies, thinly sliced, 1 tablespoon mustard seeds, 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste, 1/2 cup mustard oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon jaggery or sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness), Pinch of asafoetida (hing) (optional), Fresh curry leaves (optional)

Start by thoroughly washing the fresh turmeric roots under running water to remove dirt. Use a clean, dry cutting board and knife to peel the outer skin of the turmeric roots. The skin should come off easily with a knife or peeler. Thinly slice the peeled turmeric roots and set them aside.

In a small skillet, dry roast the mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds until they become fragrant and slightly dark in colour. Allow them to cool.

Grind the roasted mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds into a coarse powder using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.

In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced turmeric roots, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt, and ground mustard-fenugreek powder.

Heat mustard oil in a small pan until it reaches the smoking point. Allow it to cool slightly.

Pour the cooled mustard oil over the turmeric mixture and mix well to ensure the turmeric slices are coated evenly with the oil and spices.

Add lemon juice to the mixture and mix again. Adjust salt and lemon juice according to taste.

If you like it sweet, add jaggery or sugar and mix well. Add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) for additional flavour if desired.

Transfer the prepared kachi haldi achar to a clean, dry glass jar or airtight container. Allow the pickle to marinate for at least a day before consuming it to allow the flavours to meld together.

Bru migrants who have resettled in Tripura voted for&nbsp;the Lok Sabha elections in the northeastern state for the first time since their permanent resettlement, which occurred as a result of a four-party agreement involving the central government, and the state governments of Tripura and Mizoram, back in 2020.&nbsp;

Two professors at Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, are facing criticism for inconsistencies in grading answer sheets. It's reported that they gave marks to D Pharma students who wrote "Jai Shree Ram", cricketers' names, and unrelated content instead of actual answers.

As per a report by Aaj Tak, the matter surfaced when two student leaders named Uddeshya and Divyanshu Singh filed a Right to Information (RTI) request, claiming that the professors accepted bribes from students and unlawfully passed them.

They sought the roll numbers of about 18 D Pharma course students to review their answer sheets and requested re-evaluation. Additionally, they submitted an affidavit and a complaint letter regarding the issue.&nbsp;

Following this, Raj Bhavan initiated an inquiry into the issue on December 21, 2023. The university administration established a committee to probe the matter.

Upon re-evaluation of the answer sheets by external professors, a significant difference was noted in the marks assigned to the students. For instance, where the professors had given 52 and 34 marks, external evaluators deemed the same answer sheets worthy of only zero and four marks.

A large study investigating mortality differences based on sexual orientation reveals that bisexual women face a 37 per cent higher risk of premature death compared to heterosexual women, while lesbian women have a 20 per cent&nbsp;higher risk.

This study, distinguishing between lesbian and bisexual women for the first time, sheds light on longstanding health disparities among sexual minority women.

While previous research documented health inequalities between sexual minority women and heterosexual women, limited research has explored mortality differences, especially among various subgroups within the sexual minority community.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ugandan-court-upholds-harsh-anti-lgbtq-law-but-says-some-rights-infringed-707339">Also read |&nbsp;Ugandan court upholds harsh anti-LGBTQ law but says some rights infringed</a>

The latest research, led by scientists from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute along with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, University of Utah, Boston Children's Hospital, and Columbia University, highlights major health gaps that result in significant differences in death rates.

Sarah McKetta, the main researcher and a Research Fellow at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, stresses the urgent importance of tackling preventable reasons behind the differences in health based on sexual orientation. This is especially crucial given the increasingly unwelcoming policies towards LGBTQ people in the US

Dr McKetta also points out that LGBTQ individuals encounter specific types of discrimination and prejudice, which can lead to various negative effects. These societal challenges result in long-term stress and harmful coping methods, making this group more prone to health problems and early death.

The study's ability to analyse results based on different sexual orientation groups is seen as a major strength by researchers. Brittany Charlton, a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, points out the unique challenges bisexual women face, both within and outside the LGBTQ community, due to biphobia.

Charlton also mentions that bisexual people often feel excluded from certain groups because others make assumptions about their sexuality based on their partner's gender.

The higher risk of early death among bisexual women is worrying, highlighting the need for specific actions to reduce these differences among all sexual minority groups.

While previous research documented health inequalities between sexual minority women and heterosexual women, limited research has explored mortality differences, especially among various subgroups within the sexual minority community. This is especially crucial given the increasingly unwelcoming policies towards LGBTQ people in the US Dr McKetta also points out that LGBTQ individuals encounter specific types of discrimination and prejudice, which can lead to various negative effects. These societal challenges result in long-term stress and harmful coping methods, making this group more prone to health problems and early death. Also watch | Vatican says 'no' to sex changes, gender theory The study's ability to analyse results based on different sexual orientation groups is seen as a major strength by researchers. (With inputs from agencies)

Doctors have started trials on hundreds of patients for the world's first personalised mRNA cancer vaccine for melanoma, with experts praising its potential to revolutionise cancer treatment by offering a permanent cure.

Melanoma, the leading cause of skin cancer deaths globally, affects approximately 132,000 people annually. Although surgery is the primary treatment, other options such as radiotherapy, medications, and chemotherapy are also used.

The new vaccines being tested are individually tailored for each patient, instructing their immune system to target cancer cells and prevent the disease from recurring.

A phase 2 trial showed significant reduction in the risk of melanoma recurrence among patients who received the vaccines. A final phase 3 trial, led by the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), has now started.&nbsp;

Dr Heather Shaw, who oversees the trial nationally, told the Guardian that these shots could potentially cure melanoma and are also being tested for other cancers like lung, bladder, and kidney cancer.&nbsp;

“This is one of the most exciting things we’ve seen in a really long time,” said Shaw. “This is a really finely honed tool. To be able to sit there and say to your patients that you’re offering them something that’s effectively like the Fat Duck at Bray versus McDonald’s – it’s that level of cordon bleu that’s coming to them … The patients are really excited about them,” he said.&nbsp;

<h2>How does it work?</h2>

The vaccine, called mRNA-4157 (V940), is a personalised treatment that&nbsp;activates the immune system to fight a patient's specific cancer.

It targets tumour neoantigens, which are unique markers found on tumours and can be recognised by the immune system.

The vaccine contains coding for up to 34 neoantigens and triggers an immune response against the tumour based on the specific mutations present in the patient's cancer.

To personalise the vaccine, a sample of the tumour is taken during surgery, followed by DNA sequencing and analysis using artificial intelligence. This process creates a tailored anti-cancer vaccine that matches the patient's tumour.

In Phase 2, data showed that patients with serious high-risk melanomas who received the vaccine along with Keytruda were almost half as likely to die or have their cancer return after three years compared to those who only received Keytruda.

Patients got 1mg of the mRNA vaccine every three weeks for up to nine doses, and 200mg of Keytruda every three weeks for about a year (up to 18 doses).

Now, in Phase 3, the global trial will include more patients, aiming for about 1,100. The UK part of the trial aims to enroll at least 60 to 70 patients across eight centres, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Leeds.

Japanese authorities, frustrated by the unruly behaviour of foreign tourists, are planning to set up&nbsp;a large black barrier to obstruct the view of Mount Fuji at a well-known photo spot. Construction of the mesh net, which will be 2.5 metres&nbsp;(8 feet) high and approximately 20 metres&nbsp;long (equivalent to the length of a cricket pitch), is scheduled to start as early as next week, according to an official from Fujikawaguchiko town.

"It's regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can't respect rules,&nbsp;leaving litter behind and ignoring traffic regulations," said the official to AFP.

In Japan, some tourist spots are facing overcrowding issues.

In Fujikawaguchiko, a town known for its view of Mount Fuji, tourists flock to photograph the iconic volcano behind a Lawson convenience store.

This location gained popularity on social media, attracting many visitors, especially from other countries.

However, the influx of tourists has led to overcrowding, with some even trespassing onto nearby properties for better views. Despite attempts to manage the situation through signage and warnings, the overcrowding persist.

To address this, authorities plan to install a large screen to block the view of Mount Fuji from the Lawson store, hoping to deter tourists from overcrowding the area and protect nearby properties, like a dental clinic.

This issue isn't unique to Japan, as other popular destinations, such as Venice, also grapple with the challenges of overtourism.

By implementing measures like entry fees and crowd control, these destinations are trying to&nbsp;strike a balance between welcoming tourists and preserving the local environment and community.

<h2>Tourists&nbsp;an issue in Venice too</h2>

Venice in Italy, has introduced a new pilot program to tackle overtourism. Day-trippers will now be charged a €5 entry fee (approximately $5.35). This move will try&nbsp;to reduce visitor numbers on busy days and make the city more enjoyable for its residents, who are becoming fewer in number.

Signs have been posted outside Venice's main train station and other key entry points to inform visitors about a new test phase lasting 29 days in July. Additionally, about 200 stewards have been trained to politely guide those unaware of the fees and the process of downloading a QR code.

A day two brothers, aged 29 and 27, were mysteriously found dead&nbsp;at their residence in Goa, police officials stated that&nbsp;initial investigations indicate that they died&nbsp;due to extreme starvation. Their mother was also found unconscious in the same residence premises.

As per law enforcement officials, the family had been subsisting on just one date per day for several days. The father of the brothers, a garment salesman, had been residing separately from his wife and sons for some time due to disagreements regarding their "fasting" practices, as per police reports.

The two deceased individuals were named Mohammad Zuber Khan, aged 29, who worked as an engineer, and his younger brother Aafan Khan, aged 27. Their mother, Rukhsana Khan, is currently receiving medical care at a government hospital and will be transferred to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) at Goa Medical College for a mental health evaluation.

On Wednesday, their father, Nazir Khan, went to their home in Aquem, Margao, but received no response when he knocked on the door. He then contacted the police.

“The house was locked from inside. In one room, the younger son was found dead. The elder son was found dead on the floor in an adjacent room and his mother was found unconscious on a bed,” an officer said, as cited by the Indian Express.&nbsp;

The police mentioned that earlier in the week, Nazir had tried to visit the house, but his wife and sons didn't let him inside.

Akbar Khan, the paternal uncle of the brothers, mentioned that his nephews and their mother had been confined to their house for several months and had become isolated from everyone.

Akbar explained that Nazir had relocated to another residence in Margao due to frequent conflicts with his wife and sons, particularly concerning their "fasting" and irregular eating habits.

The brothers had spent most of their childhood at their maternal home in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, according to family members.

Akbar stated that Zuber had been employed as an engineer in Sawantwadi, Sindhudurg, while Aafan had completed his B.Com degree. Zuber was married and had two children, but later, both brothers and their parents moved to Margao, where they remained unemployed, as per their uncle.

Relatives mentioned that Zuber's wife and children did not accompany him to Margao.

The police mentioned that family members informed them that Zuber, Aafan, and Rukhsana were only consuming one date per day.&nbsp;

“Nazir used to drop some money for groceries through a small keyhole into the house, but in the past few weeks, the family had shut that keyhole. They had also placed some furniture next to the main door of the house to restrain people from entering,” an officer said, as reported by the Indian Express.&nbsp;

Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky was detained after being named a formal suspect in a multimillion-dollar corruption inquiry, prosecutors said Friday.

Blighted by severe corruption scandals since the fall of the Soviet Union, Kyiv has pledged to bolster its anti-graft efforts as part of its bid for European Union membership.

Solsky was accused of illegally seizing land worth more than $7 million when he was the head of a major farming company and a member of parliament.

An anti-corruption court ordered him to be held in custody until June 24, prosecutors said. Bail was set at 75.7 million hryvnias ($1.9 million).

Earlier this week, Solsky offered his resignation and promised to cooperate with the probe.

Prosecutors said Friday that they had also charged a dozen other people suspected in the case, including civil servants.

Solsky, who owned a number of farming businesses, was elected to Ukraine's parliament in 2019 and was appointed agriculture minister in March 2022.

Several cases of corruption have emerged in Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, although they have typically involved lower-level officials and been related to army procurement.
