The aurora borealis, typically seen in polar regions due to disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind, made a rare appearance in Indian skies. For the first time, the Indian Astronomical Observatory captured this phenomenon above Mount Saraswati in Ladakh's Hanle region.

This celestial display, also known as the Northern Lights, is uncommon at lower latitudes like Ladakh's 34-36°N. The auroral red arc appeared around 1 am on May 11 and is expected to persist over the weekend as more coronal mass ejections interact with Earth's outer atmosphere.

Despite Ladakh's mid-latitude location, it experienced a severe G4 geomagnetic storm, as classified by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center. A similar event occurred on April 22-23, 2023, attributed to a coronal mass ejection on April 21, which induced a G4 geomagnetic storm on Earth.

Explaining the phenomenon, Scientific Officer of Institute for Plasma Research Centre Dr Ravi A V Kumar said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "Solar flares are very common, it happens all the time...It happens when the sun gets to the peak of its activity of 11-year circle...After every 11 years, the activity of the sun goes from high to low and in 2025 the activity is going to be at its peak...The chance of solar flares coming out at this time are more...These are highly charged particles of plasma which can travel at very high velocities... The faster these particles move the more dangerous they are...Since these are charged particles from the sun they can get deflected from Earth's magnetic field..."

"Some of these deflected particles can come to polar regions of the earth which then interact with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere and they produce a colour called Aurora...When there is a very strong solar flare like the one which happened yesterday when combined with the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field produces Auroras. People are very fortunate to even see this right upto Northern Italy...The Aurora could also be seen in Hanle Ladakh..." he added.

Top 10 world news: New front opens in Russia-Ukraine war; Delhi CM Kejriwal gets bail; and more

A recent study from the Center for Public Health at the University of Vienna could give you pause before reaching for the salt at your next meal.

Researchers found that individuals in the UK who frequently added salt to their meals had a 41 percent higher risk of developing stomach cancer compared to those who used salt sparingly.

While prior research in China, Japan, and Korea has connected a high-salt diet with stomach cancer, this study is among the first to establish the link in Western populations.

While the Austrian study was purely observational, previous research has indicated that excessive salt intake could potentially weaken the protective lining of the stomach, resulting in tissue damage and potentially cancerous changes.

'Our research shows the connection between the frequency of added salt and stomach cancer in Western countries too,' lead author Selma Kronsteiner-Gicevic, a nutritionist at University of Vienna said, as quoted by Daily Mail.

The recommended daily salt intake might surprise many people. According to the FDA, it's advised to consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium daily, which roughly equates to about one teaspoon of table salt.

However, due to the prevalence of salt in various food items and the habit of adding additional salt, the average American typically consumes around 3,400 mg per day, as reported by the agency. For instance, a single can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup contains approximately 890 mg of salt.

While adding a bit of salt for flavor may seem harmless, consistently exceeding recommended limits could pose health risks, the researchers noted.

To arrive at these findings, researchers from the University of Vienna analyzed data from the UK Biobank, which included 471,144 adults in the United Kingdom. Over an 11-year period, they found that individuals who frequently added salt to their meals were 41 percent more likely to develop stomach cancer compared to those who rarely did so.

This correlation remained significant even after accounting for other factors such as age, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle choices like alcohol and tobacco use.

Drinking alcohol and smoking can greatly increase your chances of getting stomach cancer, says the American Cancer Society. They predict about 26,890 new cases of stomach cancer in the U.S. for 2024, with around 10,880 people dying from it.

If caught early, stomach cancer has a good chance of being treated - someone with early stomach cancer is 75 percent as likely as someone without cancer to live for five years, according to the NIH. But if it's already spread, that chance drops to 35 percent.

Stomach cancer can develop without you noticing as its symptoms are easy to miss. Early signs like feeling bloated, having an upset stomach, or indigestion can be mistaken for just feeling full after a big meal.

Chinese scientists have found strange volcanoes on the Moon's far side, where the next Chinese mission will land. This discovery is likely to change how we think about lunar volcanoes and help us understand why one side of the Moon looks different from the other.

The Chang’e-6 mission, launched on May 3, aims to collect soil samples from the Apollo basin, situated within the South Pole-Aitken basin, known as the largest impact crater in the solar system.

Recent research published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters by Dr Yuqi Qian and colleagues from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has uncovered a varied and mysterious history of volcanic activity spanning millions of years.

Also read | Earthlings will soon be able to calculate what time it is on the Moon. Here's how

What does the analysis suggest?

Detailed analysis conducted by scientists reveals that volcanic activity in the Apollo basin occurred from the Nectarian to the Eratosthenian period, roughly between 4.05 and 1.79 billion years ago.

This activity was significantly influenced by the thickness of the basin's crust. Dikes beneath the thin crust of the basin reached the surface, forming lava flows, while dikes within the thick crust became trapped, creating basaltic dike intrusions.

This finding implies that the variation in crust thickness between the near and far sides of the Moon likely caused the uneven distribution of volcanic activity. Moreover, researchers have identified at least two distinct instances of volcanic eruptions with different chemical compositions in the southern maria plain of the Apollo basin, occurring in the ancient past.

The study's authors stress the importance of the samples collected by Chang’e-6 in gaining a deeper understanding of this diverse volcanic history and its significance for lunar asymmetry.

Barron Trump, the youngest son of Donald Trump, who has remained mostly out of public view as he completes high school, will make his first appearance in the political arena in July, as reported by AFP.

At the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee, he will take on the role of delegate alongside his siblings to represent Florida. This convention marks the formal nomination of Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for the upcoming presidential election, as delegates from across the nation gather to officially endorse their chosen candidate.

Barron will join his siblings Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Tiffany Trump as members of the Florida delegation, according to the state party's announcement.

Earlier this year, Barron was seen standing head and shoulders above his family members at his grandmother's funeral. While residing in the White House during his father's presidency, Barron was meticulously sheltered from public exposure by his mother Melania.

"He's on the delegation roster and Barron is very interested in our nation's political process," a Republican campaign official told ABC News.

Trump's oldest daughter, Ivanka, isn't going to the convention in Florida as a delegate. She worked with her husband Jared Kushner as a top advisor when her father was president before.

Trump's sons, Don Jr. and Eric, are usually with him and often join him on the campaign trail to help him get re-elected.

Trump is making sure his family has more power in the party before the election. In March, they chose Lara, who is married to Eric, to be in charge of the Republican National Committee.

The ex-president has been given a break from his legal proceedings in New York to be present at Barron's graduation next Friday.

Stormy Daniels testifies

In a much-awaited segment of the hush-money trial, Stormy Daniels shared details of her alleged affair with Donald Trump, recounting their intimate moments together, including a 2006 encounter in a Lake Tahoe hotel suite. This testimony unfolded in open court on Tuesday morning (May 7) in Manhattan.

"He was wearing silk or satin pajamas that I immediately made fun of," Daniels said as a prosecutor questioned her about the encounter. "'Does Hugh Hefner know you stole his pajamas?'" she recalled asking Trump.

Her detailed and explicit testimony provided new insights into a story that has been extensively scrutinised over the years.

During a break, Judge Juan Merchan cautioned Trump's lawyer in private about the possibility of the ex-president using vulgar language during the testimony, warning that such behaviour would not be tolerated. The day prior, Merchan had threatened to jail Trump for repeatedly breaching a gag order preventing him from publicly discussing potential witnesses.

5 Household Heroes: Everyday Items to Ease Anxiety

Indoor plants not only add greenery and beauty to your home but can also have a calming effect on your mind. Research suggests that being around plants can reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. Common houseplants like aloe vera, snake plant, and peace lily are known for their air-purifying properties and are relatively easy to care for.

An aromatherapy diffuser can help create a soothing atmosphere in your home by dispersing essential oils into the air. Scents like lavender, chamomile, and bergamot are known for their calming and stress-relieving properties. Simply add a few drops of your preferred essential oil to the diffuser, and enjoy the therapeutic aroma.

Wrapping yourself in a soft, comforting blanket can provide a sense of security and relaxation, helping to alleviate anxiety. Weighted blankets, in particular, have been shown to promote feelings of calmness and reduce stress by applying gentle pressure to the body, similar to a comforting hug.

Fidget toys, such as stress balls, fidget spinners, or sensory putty, can be effective in helping to distract your mind and relieve anxiety. Engaging in repetitive motions or tactile activities can help redirect anxious thoughts and provide a sense of focus and calm.

Enjoying a warm cup of herbal tea can be a comforting ritual that promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety. Chamomile tea, in particular, is renowned for its calming properties and is often used as a natural remedy for stress and insomnia.

Maintaining optimal health involves more than just exercising and sleeping well. It requires a balanced approach to daily activities, including sitting, standing, light activity, and exercise.

While we intuitively recognise the benefits of standing over sitting and the importance of exercise and sleep, achieving the right balance among these activities remains a challenge. Questions arise, particularly regarding how to structure our day to maximise health benefits while minimising risks.

Now, research conducted on over 2,000 adults wearing body sensors for a week provided valuable insights into daily activity patterns and their correlation with health markers.

By analysing data on sitting, standing, light activity, and exercise, researchers identified optimal combinations that were associated with reduced risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Also read | Late to exercise? No worries: Study shows starting in your 40s still boosts health

The average ideal distribution of time across a 24-hour period, taking into account all factors, were as follows:

Sitting: Six hours

Standing: Five hours and 10 minutes

Light-to-moderate physical activity (less than 100 steps per minute): Two hours and 10 minutes

Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (more than 100 steps per minute): Two hours and 10 minutes

Sleeping: Eight hours and 20 minutes

Current health guidelines typically focus on recommending a certain amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week.

However, emerging evidence suggests that how we spend our entire day, including time spent sitting, standing, and engaging in light activity, can significantly impact our health.

Therefore, upcoming health guidelines may need to incorporate recommendations for 24-hour movement patterns.

One surprising finding from the research was the significant impact of light-intensity physical activity on glucose control, particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Incorporating short bouts of light activity, such as short walks, throughout the day showed metabolic benefits, especially after meals.

Vladimir Putin is set to be sworn in for his fifth term as Russia's president on Tuesday (May 7) during an inauguration ceremony in Moscow.

Putin, who won 87 per cent of the vote in the March presidential election, will officially begin another six-year term in office at the Kremlin ceremony. Following the inauguration, the current Russian government will resign, making way for a new government approved by the nation's parliament through a constitutional amendment passed in 2020.

According to the Anadolu news agency, Putin will present his choice for prime minister to the Russian State Duma, the country's lower house of parliament, for confirmation.

While the parliament has the authority to accept or decline the nominee, if lawmakers reject the candidate three times, Putin can appoint the prime minister directly without requiring parliamentary approval.

Subsequently, Putin can call for new parliamentary elections and dissolve the current legislature.

Reports from local media suggest that Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who has overseen economic growth amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and subsequent Western economic sanctions, is likely to be reappointed.

Current defence and foreign ministers Sergey Shoygu and Sergey Lavrov are reportedly set to retain their roles, with no expected changes in the finance and economic ministries.

Nevertheless, adjustments to relevant ministries and the possibility of establishing a Youth Ministry are under consideration in response to public critique of policies regarding sports, education, and culture.
